SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. April 6, 2013 (WEEK 6, MLS Game #48) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; SNET Pac) The San Jose Earthquakes will be looking to resume their Buck Shaw Stadium winning ways when they play host to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday evening. The Quakes have won two in a row in Santa Clara, but are coming off a 2-0 loss at the Houston Dynamo last weekend. Whitecaps FC are concluding a three-game road swing, having dropped the first two, last a 2-1 defeat at Chivas USA, after starting the season with two home wins. REFEREE: Fotis Bazakos. The Quakes sit in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with 7 points from 5 matches. LAST MATCH  The Dynamo controlled the match from the outset and took the lead in the 21st minute. Boniek García nutmegged a defender on the right and sent in a low pass, where Will Bruin took no time in slotting home a professional finish.  The home side doubled the lead just before the first half ended. Freed on the left flank, Brad Davis lifted a teasing cross that drew San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch off his line, only to be beaten by a streaking Giles Barnes, who thumped home a header from the heart of the area.  Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made two changes to the team that got the game’s only goal for a win against Seattle Sounders FC. Victor Bernardez and Justin Morrow came back from international duty, replacing Nana Attakora and Dan Gargan in the back four.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Ty Harden, Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Shea Salinas (Alan Gordon 68), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca (Cordell Cato 61), Ramiro Corrales - Adam Jahn (Mike Fucito 60), Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes, the league’s highest-scoring team a season ago with 72 goals from 34 matches, were shut out for a second time in five games this year. They were shut out just twice in all of 2012 – a 1-0 loss at Houston on March 17, and a July 7 scoreless draw at FC Dallas.  “This has been a very good start with a lot of guys out,” Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop said. “We knew [with all the players out] this was going to be a long-term season. We have to be around the .500 mark when the guys come back and we’ll be good.”  Alan Gordon returned from offseason surgery to make his first appearance of the new season, coming on for the final 22 minutes.

“We weren’t ready to compete for the first half hour and we got punished for it, but I think the positive for us was the emergence of Alan Gordon in the second half,” said Yallop. “I think he changed the game completely for us. If he would have been on from the start, it might have been different.” Yallop will have the other piece of his attacking arsenal available for the Vancouver match, as Steven Lenhart has returned to action and should be available for selection following arthroscopic knee surgery in November. “If you ask Lenny, he wants to play 90, 95 [minutes], but realistically, he’s not played for four or five months,” Yallop said. “… We’ll see on Thursday and Friday how [Gordon and Lenhart] are feeling and make a decision on both guys. … If you look at them potentially playing together, it’s great, because Wondo can play in a number of positions – behind them, or wide. It’s something we’ll look at, because that’s three very good players and very good offensive threats, and I think the more of those on the field you have, the more chance of scoring goals.” While the Quakes saw their back four return to the season standard following international duty, they are still without nominal starters Steven Beitashour, Mehdi Ballouchy and Marvin Chávez. “I feel very confident in my team no matter who is out there. We are just trying to bide our time and wait for the guys to get healthy. We feel that any 11 guys that we throw out there, we are going to try to win that game and we feel we have that ability to win the game,” said Wondolowski. “It’s always disappointing when you don’t get the result you want, but it is nice to look on the horizon and see a lot of healthy bodies coming back.” Said goalkeeper Jon Busch: “We have enough depth in our team regardless of who is on the field to get points. Sure it’s nice to see those guys who have been injured on the horizon, but we live in the present, we live in the here and now. There is a reason why this team is built by John [Doyle] and Frank [Yallop] to be so deep. We just concentrate on who is on the field.” Ramiro Corrales – the last active player in MLS to have played in the inaugural season of 1996 – became the 21st player in league history to reach 300 league appearances in the loss in Houston.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered a second consecutive road loss, dropping a 2-1 decision to Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center on Saturday evening. Whitecaps FC sit in sixth place in the Western Conference with 6 points from 4 matches. LAST MATCH  Chivas USA took the lead in the 12th minute when Carlos Álvarez’s crossing pass from just outside the box deflected off Jun Marques Davidson’s shoulder and past goalkeeper Joe Cannon, who was unable to react in time to keep out the own goal.  The home side doubled their lead 10 minutes after the break. Jorge Villafana flighted in a cross from the left flank and Eric Avila met it with a thumping full volley with his right foot that curled back inside the far post.  Vancouver cut the deficit in half in the 64th minute on Kenny Miller’s opportunistic header. Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy initially saved Erik Hurtado’s strong left-footed strike, but substitute Miller headed the ball back into the unguarded goal.  Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie made one change to the team that lost 2-1 to the Houston Dynamo. Camilo Sanvezzo came into the team in place of Erik Hurtado.  VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC (4-1-4-1): Joe Cannon - Lee Young-Pyo, Brad Rusin, Andy O'Brien, Alain Rochat - Jun Marques Davidson (Kekuta Manneh 80) - Daigo Kobayashi, Nigel Reo-Coker, Gershon Koffie (Kenny Miller 57), Camilo Sanvezzo (Erik Hurtado 57) - Darren Mattocks. TEAM NEWS  After two wins at BC Place to open the season, Whitecaps FC have now lost their first two matches away from home, concluding a three-match road swing with the visit to San Jose.  “As a team you’ve got to take it how it is,” Whitecaps midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker said. “You’re going to get games like this. The only thing you can do is continue to do what you’re doing and your fortune and your luck will change. The important thing and the positive is, we’re creating chances away from home, and we’re playing well away from home. It could be a different situation if we’re not playing well away from home and not creating chances.”  The own goal was the second conceded by Whitecaps FC in their MLS history, the first coming last April 18 vs. Sporting KC through Martin Bonjour.  “Marques is one of our most consistent and reliable players. He just had an off night tonight. I think he wasn’t the only one, which was a little bit disappointing,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “We didn’t win enough second balls. We gave balls away a little easy. Both goals came from not dealing with second balls properly and it’s frustrating because we worked on that during the week.”  After returning from international duty with Scotland, Kenny Miller started on the substitutes’ bench vs. Chivas USA, but scored just seven minutes after coming onto the field.  “He’s done well coming into the game. He’s made an impact on it. He’s a very important player for us,” said Martin Rennie. In some ways, it’s disappointing we’ve had two great games at home, then a break, then

missing Kenny for those [away] games has knocked us a little bit – but we need to get over that now and move on.” Said Miller: “I feel good – I’ve said that since preseason. I felt fit, I’ve felt strong. … Obviously, I was looking forward to the game today to get back and get back into the swing of things.” Rookie Kekuta Manneh, who came off the substitutes’ bench for a second consecutive match after starting in the season opener, had a glorious opportunity to score his first professional goal when in alone on the goalkeeper in the 90th minute. “Some people find it easier than others, to score goals,” Miller said. “We have a lot of young lads in the team. Obviously with Kekuta’s chance right in the 90th minute, maybe you could say, if you’re that quick, you can compose yourself a little bit when you’re going through on goal. But everybody’s different – everyone’s different when they’re going through one on one or shooting with the goal and he was unfortunate.”

Last Game Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 2; March 30, 2013; BBVA Compass Stadium, Houston, Texas The Earthquakes fell 2-0 against the Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium. Despite the loss, two Earthquakes players hit career milestones. MLS original Ramiro Corrales made his 300th career MLS appearance while forward Chris Wondolowski made his 100th career start with the club. The Dynamo changed the game early thanks to a tap-in finish from Will Bruin. Honduran winger Boniek Garcia created the chance with a cross that picked the second-year forward out at the top of the 6-yard box, allowing for an easy finish in front of the frame in the 17th minute. Giles Barnes capped the scoring in the 42nd minute. The British striker and midfielder Brad Davis were perfectly in synch for the goal, Davis lofting a cross into the box that found Barnes in stride for the header. Of note for San Jose, forward Alan Gordon made his first appearance of 2013, subbing on for Shea Salinas in the 68th minute. The target man was second on the team with 13 goals and seven assists in 2012. He missed the Earthquakes’ first four games while continuing to rehab from offseason surgery on his left foot. Last Game vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC Earthquakes 1, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2; July 22, 2012; BC Place; Vancouver Whitecaps FC, B.C. The Earthquakes rallied from a one-goal deficit to tie the game before halftime, but a penalty given was the difference in a 2-1 loss at BC Place against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Playing their third game in nine days, the Earthquakes pelted Vancouver’s attacking third for much of the night, outshooting their hosts 18-9. However, it was Whitecaps FC who would strike first. Dane Richards buried a shot from

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, April 6, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT close range to give Vancouver an initial 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. The Earthquakes created a number of chances before finally breaking through in the 38th. Jason Hernandez started the scoring sequence by stepping in front of a Whitecaps FC pass near midfield. He then slid a ball to Marvin Chavez in space before the Honduran winger zipped a cross to the far post where Alan Gordon headed home the equalizer. The goal was Gordon’s ninth of the season, a career high. Meanwhile, Chavez slotted in his ninth assist of the year. The deciding goal game in the 63rd minute as Harry Robson finished a penalty chance for Vancouver after the assistant referee signaled for an Earthquakes foul in the box. Scoring: VAN – Richards (Lee) 20; SJ – Gordon (Chavez) 38; VAN – Robson (penalty) 62.

The World Cup veteran has made 51 appearances with Honduras, while scoring 12 goals. He played in all three matches for Honduras at the 2010 World Cup. In his club career, he has played for CD Victoria (Honduras), CD Marathon (Honduras), Deportivo Alaves (Spain), Beijing Guoan (China) and Chongqing FC (China). Goonies Strike Again The Earthquakes set an MLS record with nine second-half stoppage-time goals in 2012, eight of which earned the team a win or a draw. The club was up to its same shenanigans in Week 2 as Adam Jahn scored an 83rd-minute equalizer and won a penalty that Chris Wondolowski slotted home in the 92nd minute. Corrales Moving Up on Career Assists List Ramiro Corrales recorded an assist for the second straight game against the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. He now has 32 career assists with the Earthquakes, placing him fourth all time in team history. The veteran defender/midfielder is 15 away from the club record held by Ronald Cerritos and trails Eddie Lewis by three for No. 3 overall. March to 200 Continues The Earthquakes are nine wins away from their 200th as an MLS club. San Jose secured their 100th win on July 19, 2003 against D.C. United when the Earthquakes won 2-1. Manny Lagos scored the game winner in the 54th minute. The Earthquakes are also four away from 100 draws. Defend the Shield Since the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield in 2005, only three teams have successfully defended the shield in back-to-back seasons: the LA Galaxy 2010-11, Columbus Crew 2009-10 and D.C. United 2006-07. Wondo Inks Designated Player Contract Chris Wondolowski became the second Designated Player in club history when he signed a new contract with the Earthquakes on Tuesday, Feb. 26. He is the reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player after tying the league record for goals in a season with 27. Wondolowski also received MLS Best XI honors last season as well as the Budweiser Golden Boot. He is the club’s all-time leading goal

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, April 6, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT scorer with 64 and set a league record for goals during a three-year stretch dating back to 2010 with 61 over that span. The only other DP in club history is Geovanni, a Brazilian attacker who was signed on Aug. 16, 2010. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. While most of the starting lineup is back in 2013, here’s a glance at the new additions bolstering the squad’s depth: D Dan Gargan – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 D Ty Harden – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 F Mike Fucito – Acquired via trade from Portland Timbers for second round SuperDraft pick on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on Feb. 13, 2013 D Peter McGlynn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on Feb. 15, 2013 D Nana Attakora – Signed on Feb. 22, 2013 after playing with FC Haka of Finland in 2012 F Adam Jahn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 D Tommy Muller – Acquired via MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 M Cordell Cato – Acquired via trade from Seattle Sounders FC on March 1, 2013 M Abu Tommy – Signed on March 12, 2013 after playing with FC Sheriff of Moldova in 2012 D Colin Mitchell – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 12, 2013 F/M Walter “Pery” Martinez – Signed on March 15, 2013 after playing with Chongqing FC in 2012 Historic Turnaround The Earthquakes improved by 28 points and 11 wins from their 2011 season, one of the best turnarounds in MLS history. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals Construction Resumes on New Earthquakes Stadium Construction has begun on the club’s stadium, which is set to open in 2014. The Earthquakes set a Guinness World Record for largest participatory groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 21, 2012 and began site prep work the week of Feb. 25. For more information about new stadium tickets, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium or call 408-556-7700. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 6. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, April 6, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT Busch Among All-time Leaders Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch finds himself among the all-time leaders in several goalkeeping categories. He is eighth in games played (232) and games started (231), while placing ninth in wins (92). With one more win he will move into a tie for eighth with Pat Onstad. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 86-9-24 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2 when scoring first, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 81-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The Quakes are 83-10-19 (.826) in nine seasons under Yallop when striking first. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011 and is 14-2-1 in 2012. Halftime Success Last season, the Earthquakes were amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 92-3-16 (.901) when leading at the half, including marks of 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field, 4-2-2 in 2011, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-01 in 2003. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. ABOUT WHITECAPS FC In 1974, Vancouver Whitecaps FC played their inaugural season in the North American Soccer League, and in 1979, the club won the NASL Soccer Bowl championship. Following the demise of the NASL in 1984, Vancouver 86ers were founded in 1986, and from 1987 to 1992, the club won four Canadian Soccer League titles. In 1993, Vancouver joined the North American second division after the disbandment of the CSL. In 2001, the club reverted back to the Whitecaps and the following season added FC to their official name, while creating a full club model that encompasses professional teams for men and women, extensive youth development and grassroots participation programs, facility development, and the Whitecaps Foundation to support specific initiatives related to health and wellness through soccer. Since 2004, Whitecaps FC have won two United Soccer Leagues First Division championships and two USL WLeague championships. Whitecaps FC were the 17th club admitted to Major League Soccer on March 18, 2009, and on March 19, 2011, Vancouver kicked off their inaugural year in MLS at Empire Field before moving into the new BC Place Stadium in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver finished the 2011 season with a record of 6W-18L-10D and last season improved to 11-13-10, finished fifth in the Western Conference and made history by becoming the first Canada MLS club to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. 2013 is Vancouverʼs 39th season of professional soccer, and 27th consecutive season. Whitecaps FC are the longest running professional soccer club in United States and Canadian history.
