PHILADELPHIA UNION vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES PPL PARK, Chester, Pa. April 28, 2012 (WEEK 8, MLS Game #67)
7 p.m. ET (CSN-Phi; CSN-BA)
Philadelphia Union return home with a two-game winning streak in tow, meeting the Western Conference leaders when the San Jose Earthquakes come to PPL Park on Saturday afternoon. Union are coming off just their second-ever victorious trip to the West Coast, a 1-0 win at Chivas USA. The Quakes took over the top spot in the West for the first time since the club’s return to MLS, knocking off Real Salt Lake 3-1 at home in a top-of-the-table clash last weekend. Union defeated the Earthquakes for the first time last season, a 1-0 win at PPL Park on April 30. The Quakes won both meetings in Philadelphia’s inaugural season; the teams also reached a draw last year at San Jose. Coaches record: Peter Nowak vs. SJ: P9 W3 L3 D3 … Frank Yallop vs. PHI: P4 W2 L1 D1 PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union won for the second time in as many weeks, getting the game’s only goal in a victory against Chivas USA on Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center. Union are in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 7 points from 6 games. LAST MATCH The visitors took the lead in the 40th minute. Michael Farfan weaved his way around Chivas defender Heath Pearce and fired a low ball into the goalmouth. James Riley’s muffed clearance fell to Freddy Adu, who quickly back-heeled the ball into an empty net. Union finished the match two players down. In the 75th minute, Union’s Keon Daniel received a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Chivas USA's Ryan Smith, then 10 minutes later, Gabriel Farfan was sent off after a hard tackle on Chivas defender James Riley. That incident was followed by Union manager Peter Nowak entering the field, an act that earned him his marching orders. Union boss Peter Nowak made no changes to the team that recorded a 1-0 win against the Columbus Crew at PPL Park. PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-4-1-1): Zac MacMath - Raymon Gaddis, Carlos Valdes, Sheanon Williams, Gabriel Farfan (sent off 85) - Keon Daniel (sent off 75), Gabriel Gomez (Amobi Okugo 71), Brian Carroll, Freddy Adu (Chris Albright 81) - Michael Farfan (Jack McInerney 92+) - Lionard Pajoy. TEAM NEWS Union have not given up a goal in 332 minutes, with three consecutive shutouts. It’s the third-longest streak without conceding a goal in MLS this season, and the longest in the club’s history.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“At the beginning of the season for a couple of weeks, it wasn’t pretty,” Union manager Peter Nowak said. “But right now it looks we found a good recipe to be hard to play against.” Goalkeeper Zac MacMath made five saves, behind a backline that remained constant, with Sheanon Williams in a second game in central defense and rookie Raymon Gaddis in his second start at right back. When Gabriel Farfan was sent off late, Chris Albright came on for his first appearance since March 24. “Chivas really brought it to us and I think we were ready for the fight,” MacMath said. “Obviously going down two guys was tough in the last 15-20 minutes but I’m proud of the guys. … We stayed together as a team, communicated and worked really hard.” The goal was created by Michael Farfan in a homecoming, his mazy dribbling run starting the sequence that eventually saw Freddy Adu backheel home his first goal of the season. “I was left with a one-vs.-one situation and just figured I’d take a run at him,” Michael Farfan said. “I just kind of zig-zagged and was hoping to find a way to get a cross in. Fortunately, it worked out.” The win at The Home Depot Center was just Union’s second all-time in 12 trips to the West Coast. It took until a 1-0 win last Oct. 8 at Seattle for the club to gain its first win in the Pacific time zone. “But I think it was a good three points. It’s very important to us, especially being on the West Coast where in the last couple of years we didn’t have success. It’s a tribute to the guys in the locker room who put so much work together,” Nowak said. After being sent off late in the match, Nowak will be suspended for the San Jose match, meaning he cannot be in the technical area nor in the dressing room at halftime. “I know I was in the wrong spot,” Nowak said in his weekly press conference on Wednesday. “I shouldn’t have been on the field. So that’s my fault to get involved like this.”
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes ran their undefeated streak to five games, getting a pair of late goals for a 3-1 win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes took over the top spot in the Western Conference with 16 points from 7 games. LAST MATCH Real went a man down just 29 minutes into the match, when Fabian Espíndola was sent off for a two-footed, studs-up challenge on San Jose midfielder Sam Cronin. The Quakes were then able to take advantage in first-half stoppage time. Khari Stephenson snuck a header past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando for his first goal of the season, rising to meet a curling cross from fullback Steven Beitashour. The visitors drew even in the 53rd minute. Kyle Beckerman ignited the buildup, creating a turnover in midfield and quickly getting the ball back via Jonny Steele’s cutting pass off the left wing. Beckerman ran onto it after a dummy, and then maneuvered past two San Jose defenders before rolling home from 14 yards out. RSL went another man down in the 69th minute when Jamison Olave was ejected by referee Elias Bazakos after taking down Quakes forward Steven Lenhart at the edge of the area. It took the home side until the 90 minutes were complete to take advantage, but they finally did with two goals in a minute. Two minutes into stoppage time, Simon Dawkins sent home a diving header off a right-wing cross from Beitashour, then Chris Wondolowski scored his league-leading eighth goal off a short chip from Stephenson inside Real Salt Lake’s penalty area. Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made four changes to the team that settled for a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Ike Opara, Jason Hernandez, Tressor Moreno and Simon Dawkins came into the team, in place of Victor Bernardez, Ramiro Corrales, Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-1-1): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara (Alan Gordon 75), Jason Hernandez, Justin Morrow - Tressor Moreno, Sam Cronin (Steven Lenhart 61), Rafael Baca (Sam Garza 82), Simon Dawkins - Khari Stephenson - Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes are in first place in the Western Conference for the first time since the club returned to MLS for the 2008 season. In 2005, when the club moved to Houston from San Jose, the team left as regular-season champions in the Western Conference. “We’re still going to do what we do, regardless of whether we’re at the bottom, middle or top [of the table],” Quakes defender Steven Beitashour said. “We’re just going to keep working hard, get better every day and never be content even if we’re in third, second or first. We’ve just got to keep working and give 100 percent effort, and I think we’ll stay up there.” Added Chris Wondolowski “I don’t think we’re going to sneak up on anyone. I think that they know that we can play.” It was the 100th league victory for Frank Yallop, becoming the sixth head coach in MLS history to reach the century mark. “I don’t put a lot into it, to be honest,” Yallop said. “Obviously, they get counted up and it ends up at 100 wins, but I just want to do well for this club. Hopefully I can get a few more and we can make the playoffs.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Khari Stephenson again started as an underneath forward, scoring the Earthquakes opening goal. Later, when Steven Lenhart came on as a substitute and moved into the target role up top, Stephenson shifted into a holding role in midfield. “He’s invaluable in his versatility,” Yallop said of Stephenson. “Sam [Cronin] was playing great, too. We just think Khari on the field gave us a better chance to score. Sam’s obviously a good possession player, but we needed to keep Khari on the pitch. . . . I think he really earns his spot.” Stephenson also collected his second assist in as many games, sending in a sublime chip that Wondolowski headed home for his joint league-leading eighth goal of the season. “It’s great to have a guy like that, who goes from forward to defensive mid,” Wondolowski said. “When you have someone you can utilize like that, it’s very important and a nice luxury to have. Great goal, great snap header down, and his assist was pretty sublime. He put it on a platter for me, so I liked that.” All three Earthquakes goals came on headers from crosses (one following a short corner). “We do a lot of crossing and finishing in training, and tonight was one of those nights where we had a lot of crosses and we scored three headers,” Stephenson said. Added Yallop: “I think service was coming in all night. We put it on Alan (Gordon) and (Steven Lenhart) to shake it up a bit with their power in the box. So, (Chris Wondolowski) gets his goal, and Simon (Dawkins) comes in late with a great finish, too. … I felt it was just a mature performance by us.” Left back Ramiro Corrales said he will not likely make the trip to Philadelphia, but with the Quakes facing three games in eight days, squad rotation will be in full effect. “There will be lineup changes,” Yallop said. “You can’t travel all the way over [to Philadelphia], come back and be dynamically fresh Wednesday night, if you’ve played 90 minutes … I’ve got to look at what we’re trying to do over the three matches. A lot of the guys are going to get minutes. I’ve just got to figure out the combinations that are going to play well against Philly.”

Philadelphia Union vs. San Jose Earthquakes – April 28, 2012 – 7 p.m. EST LAST MLS MATCH
LAST MATCH VS. SAN JOSE
The Philadelphia Union had two players hit the showers early — plus their coach — but still picked up three points on the road, winning 1-0 over Chivas USA in a feisty affair at The Home Depot Center. The winning strike came against the run of play, when Michael Farfan tricked his way around Chivas defender Heath Pearce and fired a low ball into the goalmouth. James Riley’s muffed clearance fell to Adu, who sneakily back-heeled the ball into an empty net. Chivas’ nearly leveled two minutes later when midfielder Nick LaBrocca launched a shot from nearly 20 yards that forced a save from Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath. In the second half, both teams struggled to generate coherent attacks. But the lack of a breakthrough and Philadelphia’s determination to defend their lead heightened the tone of the match. In the 75th minute, the Union’s Keon Daniel received a straight red for a studs-up challenge on the Goats’ Ryan Smith. Ten minutes later, Gabriel Farfan was red-carded after a tackle on Riley, leading to a scuffle between, which saw Union manager Peter Nowak get sent off after entering the field. Up two men, Chivas threw numbers forward but were unable to find the equalizer as time expired.
Looking for their first victory in the Pacific Time Zone in team history, the Philadelphia Union settled for a 0-0 draw and one point against the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday. Though the Union back line played without Carlos Valdes (illness), who hadn’t missed a single minute all season, and the recently-traded Jordan Harvey, Philadelphia were composed all night holding San Jose (5-6-7) to just two shots on target. Stefani Miglioranzi was effective deputizing for Valdes, and Gabriel Farfan slid into the left back role previously occupied by Harvey. Most of the first half was spent in the Earthquakes' end, but Philadelphia managed just one shot on goal. After the intermission, the play began to open up as both teams looked to gain the upper hand. It was Mwanga again with an opportunity in the th 47 as Mapp, the most creative attacker for the Union before th being replaced by Roger Torres in the 70 minute, hit the young striker six yards out. Mwanga's shot was blocked, and on the San Jose counter, Ryan Johnson lobbed a shot off the top of the crossbar, San Jose's best chance of the night. Pushing for the go-ahead score, Michael Farfan was rd stonewalled twice in the 73 minute by a packed-in San Jose defense. Though the Union continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the match, they were unable to find a winner.

The ten year veteran is currently in his second season with Philadelphia Union, logging 3,100 minutes with the club thus far. For the season Carroll has recorded three shots, one being on goal.
WEST COAST WIN With their victory against Chivas USA, the Union earned their second West-Coast win in franchise history, with the first coming from a 2-0 at Seattle on October 8, 2011. Previously, the Union were just 1-9-4 when playing on the west coast (Chivas USA, Galaxy, Rapids, Earthquakes, Timbers, Real Salt Lake, Seattle).
FRANCHISE RECORD IN SIGHT
Just the second time in franchise history Philadelphia has won two straight matches, the Union have gone 0-1-1 in the games following their previous two-game win streaks, including a 1-0 loss at LA Galaxy on April 2, 2011, and a 1-1 tie at Colorado Rapids on June 4, 2011.
ROSTER ADJUSTMENT After starting with the same lineup from the previous week against Chivas USA – the first time the Union has started the same 11 in consecutive weeks this year – Philadelphia will be forced to make adjustments as both Keon Daniel and Gabe Farfan will be serving their suspensions from the red cards they received against Chivas USA. Farfan, starter at left back for the previous two matches, could be replaced by Union defenders Porfirio López, Chris Albright or team captain Danny Califf, if available from a hamstring injury. The Union have options at midfield for Daniel’s replacement, with Amobi Okugo, Cristhian Hernandez or new signing Kai Herdling candidates for the role in midfield. Additionally, Philadelphia will be without head coach Peter Nowak as he serves a one-game match ban for entering the field of play against Chivas USA.
MCLAUGHLIN TURNS 19 Midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin will turn 19 on Monday, April 30, two days after the Union take on San Jose. Born in Malvern, PA, in 1993, the Union youngster was the second player to be signed as a Home-Grown product, following Zach Pfeffer. McLaughlin has yet to log a minute with the first-team, but has appeared regularly in Union reserve matches.
MATCH TIME VS. NEW YORK MOVED Philadelphia Union announced today that the club's May 13 match at PPL Park vs. the New York Red Bulls has been changed to 12:30 p.m. EST, an hour earlier than the previous start time of 1:30 p.m. The match, which will be broadcast on ESPN2, falls on Mother’s Day and will offer several opportunities for fans to honor their mothers.
With a win against San Jose on Saturday, the Union could reach the first ever three-game winning streak in franchise history.

Last Game Earthquakes 3, Real Salt Lake 1; April 21, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. The Earthquakes scored twice in second-half stoppage time to defeat visiting Real Salt Lake, 3-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday and leapfrog the Claret-and-Cobalt to move into the top perch in the MLS Western Conference. Simon Dawkins nodded on Steven Beitashour’s cross from the right flank into the left corner of the goal as he went to ground in the second minute of stoppage for the decisive strike that put the home crowd into a frenzy on a night which saw Frank Yallop earn his 100th career win as an MLS manager. Just moments later, Khari Stephenson accepted Tressor Moreno’s short corner from the right and deftly lofted a pass with the outside of his right foot. The ball traversed the six-yard box to the back post, where 5-foot-8 teenager Luis Gil was no match for a leaping Chris Wondolowski, the Quakes star heading home past Nick Rimando and assuring the three points and first-place ascension. Stephenson had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage, latching onto another Beitashour cross and skipping his header off the ground and also through Rimando’s save attempt. RSL captain Kyle Beckerman equalized with an individual effort in the 53rd, but the visitors finished the match with only nine men following a pair of red-card ejections in the 29th and 69th minutes. Last Game vs. Philadelphia Union Earthquakes 0, Philadelphia Union 0; July 9, 2011; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes and Philadelphia Union played to a scoreless stalemate in the most recent meeting between the teams, at Buck Shaw Stadium on July 9, 2011. The Union out-shot the Quakes, 15-12, with Jon Busch needing to make five saves to preserve the clean sheet. Both teams found the woodwork once on the night. Former Quake Ryan Johnson narrowly missed the target for the home side early in the second half, his shot finding the crossbar. Former Union midfielder Kyle Nakazawa almost stole the points for the visitors with a late free kick, if not for the far post. The result enabled San Jose to extend its home unbeaten run to six matches.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES New Leader in Western Conference The San Jose Earthquakes took over the top spot in the MLS Western Conference with their 3-1 home triumph over Real Salt Lake on April 21. This marks the first time that the Earthquakes are atop the Western Conference since the club rejoined MLS as an expansion franchise prior to the 2008 season. The Quakes (5-1-1, 16 pts.) lead second-place RSL (5-3-0, 15 pts.) by one point with a game in hand. Seattle Sounders FC is lurking in fourth-place at 10 points from a 3-1-1 start with two games in hand over San Jose. The Quakes also picked up ground in the race for the 2012 MLS Supporters’ Shield, as Sporting Kansas City (7-1-0, 21 pts.) received its first blemish of the year, 1-0, at the Portland Timbers on Saturday.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Philadelphia Union, April 28, 2012, 4 p.m. PT Yallop Sixth Manager to Reach 100 MLS Victories Eighth-year Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop reached the 100-win milestone for his MLS regular-season managerial career with the 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. Yallop, whose career also includes a two-year stint with the LA Galaxy in 2006-07, is now 100-96-70 (.508) as an MLS head coach in regular-season matches. He ranks sixth on the all-time MLS chart in wins, behind Sigi Schmid (160), Bruce Arena (131), Bob Bradley (124), Steve Nicol (112) and former pupil Dominic Kinnear (102). Hernandez Draws Milestone Start No. 100 for Club Against Real Salt Lake in front of the home crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21, veteran Quakes center back Jason Hernandez earned start No. 100 for him in club colors since he joined the Earthquakes prior to their return to MLS for the 2008 season. It was his first start of 2012. Hernandez is climbing the all-time club charts, as he is now tied with Eddie Lewis (1996-99) for No. 8 in starts, and up to No. 8 in minutes played (8,937) as well, passing Lewis (8,867). Hernandez made his 100th appearance in an Earthquakes uniform in his 2012 debut when he entered the March 31 match at Seattle at halftime. April 21 Wrap-Up All three San Jose goals in Saturday’s match came from headers, from the center of the penalty box (Khari Stephenson), front post (Simon Dawkins) and back post (Chris Wondolowski), all from right-sided crosses … The Quakes are already at 5-1-1 after finishing with just eight wins a year ago, and have five victories before the end of April, having achieved win No. 5 on June 11 in 2011 … With the victory, San Jose extended its unbeaten run to five games since its only defeat of 2012 to Houston on March 17, now 4-0-1 since then (the Quakes had a six-game unbeaten run at 4-0-2 from May 11-June 11, 2011) … The Quakes took 14 corner kicks in the contest, to just one by RSL, falling one shy of the single-game club record of 15 set on Aug. 26, 2000, against the LA Galaxy at Spartan Stadium … The goals by Stephenson and Dawkins were their firsts of the season and seventh career strike for each player … Forwards Steven Lenhart and Alan Gordon returned to game action as second-half substitutes after missing the last two and one match, respectively, both due to hamstring injuries … The Quakes’ top pick in this year’s SuperDraft, Sam Garza, made his MLS debut, replacing Rafael Baca on the right wing in the 82nd minute … San Jose’s three goals were the most given up by Real Salt Lake in eight games this season. Beita Back to Assisting Ways Steven Beitashour’s two assists against Real Salt Lake gave the third-year right back a team-leading four for 2012, moving him into a tie for third in MLS. Beitashour, who led the team with seven helpers a year ago, now has 11 assists in his last 24 appearances Over the RSL Hump San Jose’s 3-1 home victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday snapped a six-game winless stretch in all competitions (0-4-2) and fivegame run (0-3-2) in league play against its Western Conference rival. The Quakes’ previous triumph over RSL was a 2-1 decision inside Buck Shaw Stadium on May 30, 2009. Khari Stephenson’s opener at 47+ in first-half stoppage time also meant an end to San Jose’s string of more than 432 minutes without a goal over four-plus matches in league competition against Real Salt Lake. Class in the Back Against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, Frank Yallop’s four-player defensive line consisted for the first time of fellow members of San Jose’s 2010 MLS SuperDraft class Ike Opara (1st Round, No. 3, Wake Forest) at center back, Justin Morrow (2nd Round, No. 28, Notre Dame) at left back and Steven Beitashour (2nd Round, No. 30, San Diego State) at right back. It was Opara’s first start of the year and first MLS start since May 28, 2011, in Chicago. Morrow was the starting left back for the first time this year in the injury absence of captain Ramiro Corrales, after beginning each of the first six contests at center back. Seven-Game Superlatives At 5-1-1 and 16 points, this is the best seven-game start to a year in the San Jose Earthquakes’ 15-season club history. In 2003, the eventual MLS Cup champion Quakes trotted out to a 4-1-2 start for 14 points. They were 4-2-1 (13 pts.) to begin the 2001, 2002 and 2010 seasons. In 1999, San Jose was 5-2 after seven matches, but picked up just five points through five shootout victories. With just five goals conceded thus far, this is the franchise’s best seven-game defensive start. San Jose allowed seven goals over its first seven matches in both 2002 and 2010. At 2-0-1 for seven points over their first three road dates, the Quakes have equaled their best threegame road start. They were an identical 2-0-1 with seven points following their first three road forays in 2003. San Jose was 2-1 after three road tests in 1999, but with only two points after a pair of shootout triumphs. The Quakes’ 13 goals, which lead the Western Conference, fall one short of their best seven-game output of 14 from 1998. Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot Chris Wondolowski closed a second straight week with a share of the lead in the race for the 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot, now at eight goals. He was alone atop the leaderboard momentarily following his stoppage-time clincher against Real Salt Lake on Saturday night. New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry pulled back even with his 72nd-minute free-kick goal at RFK Stadium on Sunday evening. It’s Wondo’s World… -Eight goals in first seven games of 2012 (tied for Budweiser Golden Boot lead with Thierry Henry of NYRB) -Current five-game goal-scoring streak (best active streak in MLS and one shy of tying own club record) -One goal shy of No. 50 for his MLS career, currently at 49 -Leads MLS for third straight year in game-winning goals with three -Leads MLS for second straight year in road goals with four -14 goals over the last 12 games dating back to 2011 -16 goals over the last 16 games (just the 10th player in MLS history with 16 or more goals in 16 games)

Meanwhile, his strike against Real Salt Lake on April 21 was the first of Wondolowski’s career against the club. Houston, Portland and Montreal are the only current clubs remaining in MLS that he has not scored against. Wondolowski has yet to face 2012 expansion side Montreal. Wondolowski Gone Streaking -Longest active goal-scoring streak in MLS at five games -One short of matching own club-record six-game stretch dating back to 2011, which was halted in Week 2 vs. Houston -Previous best was a four-game run from April 17-May 8, 2010 -Scored all 12 Quakes goals from Sept. 15, 2010-March 26, 2011, an MLS record for most consecutive goals by one player -Produced five straight Quakes goals from Sept. 24-Oct. 15, 2011 Best Defensive Start in Club History -Having conceded just five goals, the Quakes are off to their best seven-game defensive start in club history -Current 0.71 goals-against average is tied with Chivas USA for third-best in MLS behind Sporting KC (0.38) and Seattle (0.40) -Allowed more than one goal in a game just once this season, in 2-2 draw at New York on April 14 -Against Vancouver on April 7, the Quakes finally let in their first goal in open play after 408 minutes to begin the year -San Jose already has three shutouts after producing just one over its final 15 games a year ago Salinas Undergoes Successful Surgery Winger Shea Salinas underwent successful surgery performed by Dr. Michael Oberlander at Sequoia Surgical Pavilion in Walnut Creek last Wednesday. The procedure was to repair a fractured clavicle suffered late in the first half against the New York Red Bulls on April 14. Salinas, who started each of San Jose’s first six games this season, is expected to be out for six to eight weeks while recovering. On the Road Again After accumulating 15 points away from home a year ago (3-8-6), the Quakes are already almost halfway to that mark with seven through three road dates in 2012. At 2-0-1 over their first three road dates, the Quakes have equaled their best three-game road start. They were an identical 2-0-1 with seven points following their first three road forays in 2003. San Jose was 2-1 after three road tests in 1999, but with only two points after a pair of shootout triumphs. The Quakes have two road wins already in 2012 after just three in 2011. Western Edge Through the first seven weeks of the 2012 MLS season (games played on April 22), the Western Conference has a slight edge over the Eastern Conference. The nine Western Conference teams have collected 96 points, compared to 84 by the 10 Eastern Conference squads, and have trotted out to a 17-12-4 record in games involving teams from both divisions. The Eastern Conference had its best showing over Week 3 and Week 4, posting a 6-3-2 mark against the Western Conference during that stretch. Road Stretch Rewind The San Jose Earthquakes recorded several notable achievements in putting together back-to-back shutout victories on their two-game road stretch last month, marking the beginning of their travels for 2012. Having won 3-0 at Toronto FC on March 24 and 1-0 at Seattle Sounders FC on March 31, San Jose kept consecutive road shutouts for the first time since Oct. 2 (0-0 at Columbus) and Oct. 9, 2010 (2-0 at D.C. United). They posted two straight road wins for the first time since Sept. 5 (2-1 at Houston) and Sept. 25, 2010 (3-2 at Toronto FC). The Quakes won road games in consecutive weeks for the first time since Aug. 8 (1-0 at Kansas City) and Aug. 13, 2003 (3-0 at Dallas). San Jose came out on top in its first two road games to open a season for the first time since 2003, having also done so in 1999. The win at TFC was San Jose’s biggest road victory since a 4-1 decision at Kansas City on Sept. 20, 2003. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk (LA Galaxy) and goalkeeper Zack Thornton (Chivas USA) made a handful of appearances in 2011. Hejduk officially announced his retirement and joined the Columbus Crew front office on April 19. Corrales was the youngest to play in MLS in 1996 as a 19-year-old.

Busch Among MLS Career Leaders With a current mark of .753, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is second on Major League Soccer’s all-time chart in career saves percentage. He trails only Brad Friedel, currently of Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, who produced a mark of .756 over 38 games with the Columbus Crew in 1996-97. Busch picked up the 63rd clean sheet of his 11-year MLS career on March 31 at Seattle Sounders FC, moving him into sole possession of seventh among the all-time leaders, ahead of former MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team standout Tony Meola. Busch has posted 17 shutouts in his three seasons as the starter in San Jose, to go along with his 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire, and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Next on the list is former Quake Pat Onstad with 64. Busch is also No. 8 all-time in saves in MLS history with 818 over his career. Wondolowski Aiming for No. 1 on Quakes’ Career Goals List Chris Wondolowski continues to chase Ronald Cerritos for No. 1 on the franchise career goals list. The Danville native has scored 14 goals over the last 12 matches and 16 in 16 dating back to the end of the 2011 season, to increase his career haul in San Jose to 45. Cerritos is the club’s all-time leader with 61 goals from 1997-2001 and 2005. Wondolowski 10th in MLS History to Notch 16 in 16 With his game-clincher against Real Salt Lake on April 21, Chris Wondolowski became the 10th player in MLS history to score 16 goals (or more) over a 16-game stretch. All 10 players achieved the feat over multiple seasons. The list follows, with the final season listed: Raul Diaz Arce (1997), Roy Lassiter (1997), Stern John (1999), Mamadou Diallo (2001), Diego Serna (2001), Carlos Ruiz (2003), Taylor Twellman (2003), Luciano Emilio (2007), Jeff Cunningham (2010), Chris Wondolowski (2012). Road Warrior After completing the 2011 season in a tie with Fredy Montero of Seattle Sounders FC for the most goals scored away from home at nine apiece, Chris Wondolowski opened his new road account with a two-goal brace at Toronto FC in the Quakes’ 2012 road debut on March 24. In 2011, Wondolowski collected his ninth in San Jose’s last away fixture of the year with a 24th-minute strike against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 15 at CenturyLink Field, to pull even with Montero, who he opposed again on that same field on March 31 and came up with the game’s lone goal. Having struck again at Red Bull Arena on April 14, Wondolowski currently leads MLS with four road goals in 2012. He finished third in road goals in 2010 with eight, behind Dwayne De Rosario (10), then of Toronto FC, and Juan Pablo Angel (9), then of the New York Red Bulls. The list of MLS leaders in road goals since the start of the 2010 season follows: 1. Chris Wondolowski (SJ) – 21 2. Dwayne De Rosario (DC) – 16 3. Juan Pablo Angel (CHV) – 14 4. Fredy Montero (SEA) – 12 5. Dominic Oduro (CHI) – 10 6. Fabian Espindola (RSL), Marco Pappa (CHI) – 9 Record-Breaking Winner for Wondo Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski wasted little time in opening his goal-scoring account for the 2012 campaign, the two-time MLS leader needing just under 15 minutes of the season opener against the New England Revolution on March 10 to find the back of the net. The right-footed strike from just outside the penalty area moved Wondolowski into sole possession of the all-time club record for gamewinning goals, which he previously shared with Quakes great Ronald Cerritos at 15 deciders apiece. With a league-best three already in 2012, Wondolowski now has 18 career game-winners, and is up to 14th on the all-time MLS chart, tied with three others. While Jeff Cunningham compiled his record 40 winners in 365 appearances, Wondolowski’s current haul has come in just 118 games. Since the start of the 2010 season, Wondolowski has accounted for the decisive goal in 17 of the Earthquakes’ 26 victories, or 65 percent. The list of MLS leaders in game-winning goals since the start of the 2010 season follows:

They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, an unbeaten 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 last season. The Quakes are off to a 4-0-0 start to the 2012 campaign. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 21 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011, and 4-0-0 early in 2012. The Quakes are 73-8-18 (.828) in seven-plus seasons under Yallop when striking first. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 73-3-15 (.885) when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 4-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Wells Fargo Goals for Education Wells Fargo has again pledged to donate $250 for each goal the Earthquakes score in 2012 through the Goals for Education program. With 13 goals through seven games, the donated total for this season currently stands at $3,250. Thanks to 40 goals in 2011, the partnership raised $10,000 for local youth soccer and athletic development programs a year ago. After fielding dozens of applications, the Earthquakes and Wells Fargo awarded 16 grants to deserving organizations, and with Quakes midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong on hand, made special check presentations at America SCORES Bay Area and Castro Valley Soccer Club in January. Earthquakes, Wondolowski Support Street Soccer USA Two-time MLS leading goal-scorer Chris Wondolowski and Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness through sports, have partnered to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. Additionally, the Earthquakes Community Fund will match Wondolowski’s donations. Wondolowski, who has been a national ambassador for SSUSA since August of 2011, got an early start on his 2012 scoring account with a strike in San Jose’s season opener on March 10, and now has a league-leading eight goals already through just seven contests. Quakes Get Go-Ahead from San Jose Planning Commission on New Stadium The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes’ Planned Development Permit on Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes’ PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal. The club has already sold 10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for its new stadium, generating over $3.5 million in revenue for the project.
