May 2, 2012 (WEEK 9, MLS Game #76) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; CSN-MA) Two of the hottest clubs in Major League Soccer meet in an interconference clash when the San Jose Earthquakes entertain D.C. United in a midweek contest at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes are unbeaten in six games and have jumped to the top to the Western Conference, winning 2-1 at Philadelphia Union last weekend. United are unbeaten in seven and coming off back-to-back wins, last a 3-2 home win against the Houston Dynamo. REFEREE: Allen Chapman. SAR (bench): C.J. United’s 2-0 win last July 30 at Buck Shaw Stadium snapped a six-game winless streak vs. San Jose, their first win in the series since 2008. The Quakes had won four of the six games, with two draws. The Earthquakes have won on each of their last three visits to RFK Stadium, including a 4-2 win last year, outscoring United 7-3 in those three games. Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. DC: P19 W9 L5 D5 … Ben Olsen vs. SJ: P3 W1 L2 D0 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes extended their undefeated run to six games, once again getting a late goal for victory in a 21 win against Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at PPL Park. The Quakes are still in first place in the Western Conference with 19 points from 8 games. LAST MATCH The Quakes brought a sluggish game to life with their 76th-minute opener. Steven Lenhart, who had come on in the 61st minute, met a Marvin Chavez cross with a diving header at the back post. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Union’s Gabriel Gomez evened the game in the 83rd minute. Union striker Danny Mwanga dug a ball out of a scrum in front of the San Jose net and coolly dished it back to Gomez, who buried a shot from inside the box. But there were late heroics once again to come from San Jose. Chavez shook Freddy Adu and Jack McInerney on the right touchline with twists and turns before flighting a pinpoint cross that Lenhart met at the far post with a downward header and the match-winner. Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made no changes to the team that claimed a 3-1 win against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-1-1): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Ike Opara, Jason Hernandez, Justin Morrow - Rafael Baca, Tressor Moreno (Marvin Chavez 61), Sam Cronin (Steven Lenhart 60), Simon Dawkins - Khari Stephenson - Chris Wondolowski.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
TEAM NEWS The Quakes have scored the game-winning goal in stoppage time in two consecutive games. It’s the first time that’s happened in MLS since D.C. United did it in back-to-back games in 2003 (July 27, Aug. 9), and just the third time overall in MLS history (LA Galaxy also did, Sept. 14-21, 2002). “I’ve had some dramatic ones, but that was a good win, a good goal,” Steven Lenhart said. “Whether you start or whether you come in [as a substitute], you’re still competing and trying to score.” Lenhart scored his first goal since July 2 of last year, and hit for the third multiple-goal game of his career. He has scored four goals in two games at PPL Park, also scoring twice there in 2010 while with the Columbus Crew. “He’s hard to handle in the box, he’s very good in the air. He’s tough,” Yallop said. “After we go a goal up and then concede one pretty late in the game, to come back and score the winner, especially away from home, is very good. We’re happy as a club, and very pleased for Steven Lenhart.” Lenhart and Marvin Chavez – who set up both goals – came on at the hour mark as Yallop shook up his side. Khari Stephenson shifted from the underneath forward to a holding midfield role, and Rafael Baca moved from a wide midfield role to the center of the park. “We weren’t moving the ball like I wanted us to,” Yallop said. “We didn’t stretch them. As soon as Marvin came on, he stretched them, and I think Lenny is such a force in the box. That was the difference in the game.” For Chavez, it was the first two-assist game in his four seasons in MLS. “I just felt that we had to go and win the game,” Yallop said. “If we would have kept what we were doing, I think we would have probably conceded a goal and probably not scored tonight. That’s my opinion. I thought we needed to change it up. … It worked in the end.” While Chris Wondolowski saw his five-game goalscoring streak come to an end against Philadelphia, he did contribute his second assist of the season. Wondolowski has a goal or assist in 10 of the Quakes’ 15 goals this season. D.C. UNITED D.C. United won a second consecutive game and lengthened their undefeated streak to seven games, battling back for a 3-2 win against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United are in second place in the Eastern Conference with 15 points from 9 games. LAST MATCH United once again got off to a flying start. In the 11th minute, a long ball out of the back from Brandon McDonald found Chris Pontius behind the defense, and he touched the ball around on-rushing Houston ‘keeper Tally Hall before finding an unmarked Maicon Santos for a header from the spot. The Dynamo pulled level in the 50th minute through Will Bruin. Jermaine Taylor placed a pinpoint cross in the box from the left corner, which the unmarked Bruin volleyed in from six yards out. But United were back ahead through Dwayne De Rosario in the 54th minute. After a corner was partially cleared, the Canadian international whipped a ball in from the left side that slithered past everyone, including Hall, as the ball curled in off the far post. Just five minutes later though, the Dynamo again were level. Bruin pounced on a loose ball outside the United box and fired dipping shot on frame that slipped under goalkeeper Joe Willis. But Maicon Santos wasn’t to be outdone. In the 70th minute, he rose highest to meet a Daniel Woolard cross, nodding it off Hall's hand to the back of the net for the eventual game-winner. United head coach Ben Olsen made no changes to the team that strolled to a 4-1 win against the New York Red Bulls at RFK Stadium D.C. UNITED (4-3-1-2): Joe Willis - Robbie Russell, Brandon McDonald, Emiliano Dudar (Marcelo Saragosa 44), Daniel Woolard - Danny Cruz (Andy Najar 65), Perry Kitchen, Nick DeLeon - Dwayne De Rosario - Maicon Santos, Chris Pontius (Lewis Neal 83). TEAM NEWS D.C. United have won back-to-back games for the first time since June 4-13, 2009, a span of 89 games. Their seven-game unbeaten streak matches their longest undefeated run over the past six seasons, and is their longest since reeling off 13 games without a loss late in 2007. “It is obviously one of our goals to put some streaks together,” Chris Pontius said. “If you look at the past four games, four Eastern Conference teams, we come out with 10 points out of 12. I think that’s pretty good for us, especially when you are looking at the Eastern Conference.” Maicon Santos has six goals in his last six games after scoring twice in the 3-2 win vs. Houston. It was his second two-goal game this season, also scoring a brace against FC Dallas. “Maicon is a big boy and willing to do a lot of the work as far as holding the balls up and fighting,” United head coach Ben Olsen said. “[Chris Pontius] is very mobile underneath and behind. He plays off [Maicon] very well. For now, it’s a good partnership.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Santos and Chris Pontius have now partnered up top for two games, and they’ve combined for five goals in that time. The pair has combined for 10 goals and two assists, second in the league in total goals between two teammates behind New York’s Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper. “We talked before the game and said, ‘Let’s get some goals tonight,’ and we hoped so,” Santos said. “I looked around and saw that I had the space to run. Pontius chipped the ball very well. We’re working together as a team both inside the field and outside the field and that has been a great point for us.” There will some concerns for the San Jose match as center back Emiliano Dudar was forced from the field before halftime against Houston with a hamstring injury. Dudar missed back-to-back starts against New England and Montreal through injury. “We have some options. Perry’s played there before; Robbie’s played there; [Daniel] Woolard’s played there. It’s not ideal because [Dudar’s] been a stud, and we’ll be missing him, and obviously Dejan [Jakovic] is out,” said Olsen. “We’ll have to make some adjustments. Again, there’s some spirit to this team, and a little adversity isn’t going to scare them.” Dwayne De Rosario scored his first goal of the season, giving United their second lead of the night. He was also credited with his fifth assist of the season, now tied for second in the league with New York’s Thierry Henry, behind KC’s Graham Zusi.

Last Game Earthquakes 2, Philadelphia Union 1; April 28, 2012; PPL Park; Chester, Pa. The Earthquakes produced a second straight stoppage-time triumph on Saturday night, 2-1 over the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. Marvin Chavez shook off the challenge of a pair of Union defenders on his right flank before lifting a left-footed cross high and deep that Steven Lenhart headed in from close range at the back post as the game clock headed into the last of three added-time minutes. Chavez and Lenhart, both second-half substitutions for Quakes head coach Frank Yallop, also combined on the game’s opening goal in the 76th minute. Chris Wondolowski threaded a through ball to Chavez on the left side of the penalty area, with the Honduran making the turn and providing a curling, right-footed cross that Lenhart hammered home with his head to open his 2012 scoring account. Philadelphia equalized through a Gabriel Gomez goal in the 83rd minute. The first half featured a trio of good chances for the Quakes, as Rafael Baca and Khari Stephenson were both denied by the Union’s Zac MacMath early in the period, with the young net-minder also saving Stephenson’s hard free kick just before the interval. Jon Busch needed to make a single stop in goal for San Jose. Lenhart’s winner marked career goal No. 20 for the fifth-year professional, and improved the Quakes’ road record to 3-0-1 on the year. Last Game vs. D.C. United Earthquakes 0, D.C. United 2; July 30, 2011; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. The San Jose Earthquakes dropped a 2-0 decision to D.C. United in the last meeting between the two teams in Santa Clara last July. The visitors won through two second-half strikes by Dwayne De Rosario, despite playing the final 20 minutes with 10 men due to a red card shown to Andy Najar in the 70th minute. De Rosario scored in the 57th and 67th minutes to give him five goals all-time against his former club. The result snapped San Jose’s home unbeaten streak at seven games, dating back to April 23, 2011, against Chivas USA.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. D.C. United, May 2, 2012, 7:30 p.m. PT MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Quakes Atop the Western Conference The San Jose Earthquakes head into a second straight week with at least a share of the top spot in the MLS Western Conference. The Quakes (6-1-1) and Real Salt Lake (6-3-1) are equal on 19 points, with San Jose having two games in hand. Seattle Sounders FC is lurking in fourth-place at 13 points from a 4-1-1 start with two games in hand over the Quakes. San Jose also picked up more ground in the race for the 2012 MLS Supporters’ Shield, moving three points closer to idle Sporting Kansas City (7-1-0, 21 pts.). Lenhart Voted MLS Player of the Week Steven Lenhart was voted by the North American Soccer Reporters on Monday as the MLS Player of the Week for his dramatic brace off the bench to lift San Jose to a 2-1 road victory over the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night. Lenhart, who earns the first Player of the Week distinction for the Quakes in 2012, opened the scoring at PPL Park in the 76th minute, before heading home the winner in the final minute of stoppage time. He needed just 30 minutes on the field to grab the honor for Week 8. This is Lenhart’s second career MLS Player of the Week award, following his Week 13 hat trick at D.C. United a year ago. Two Hottest Sides in MLS The San Jose Earthquakes and D.C. United enter their one and only match-up of the 2012 season on the two longest unbeaten streaks currently in MLS. D.C. United is undefeated in its last seven since two straight losses to begin the new campaign, going 4-0-3. San Jose has not lost in its last six since its only defeat of the year, 1-0 to Houston. The Quakes are 5-0-1 since that result at AT&T Park on March 17. This stretch matches the six-game unbeaten run that San Jose posted a year ago from May 11-June 11 (4-0-2). A Quakes win or a tie on Wednesday would mean the club’s longest such stretch since a nine-game run in 2008 between July 12-Sept. 13. Schedule Specs This week’s home meeting with D.C. United marks the first of six midweek games on a Tuesday or Wednesday this season for the Quakes. San Jose went 0-3-1 in such games in 2011. The Quakes are also in the midst of their first multi-game week, with three matches over an eight-day span that began Saturday at Philadelphia. San Jose travels north to take on Western rival Vancouver on May 5. The Quakes face six matches in all for the busy month of May, after having played four each in March and April. Return of DeRo Wednesday night’s meeting with D.C. United marks the return to the South Bay of Dwayne De Rosario. The midfielder starred for the Quakes for five seasons from 2001-05, producing 27 goals and 31 assists over 108 appearances. De Rosario aided the Quakes to both of their MLS Cup titles in 2001 and 2003, and led the squad in both goals (nine) and assists (13) in 2005 as San Jose earned its first MLS Supporters’ Shield. He remains No. 4 on the club’s all-time goals and assists charts. De Rosario is the reigning Volkswagen MLS MVP, and edged out Chris Wondolowski for the 2011 Budweiser Golden Boot on account of the assists tiebreaker, 12-3. Hucks at the Buck Former Quakes star Darren Huckerby is expected to be on hand Wednesday when San Jose plays host to D.C. United at Buck Shaw Stadium. The English forward played the 2008 and 2009 seasons in San Jose, producing nine goals and six assists over 28 appearances. He was named the 2008 MLS Newcomer of the Year. Dueling Hat Tricks The players who have accounted for four of the five three-goal hat tricks in San Jose club history will be involved when the Earthquakes take on D.C. United on Wednesday night. Chris Wondolowski (Sept. 25, 2010, at TFC and Oct. 20, 2010, vs. CHV) has turned in two of them, with one each by Quakes strike partner Steven Lenhart and current D.C. United midfielder Dwayne De Rosario (Sept. 27, 2003, vs. DAL). Lenhart’s hat trick actually came against D.C. United in a 4-2 Quakes victory at RFK Stadium on July 11, 2011. San Jose’s other hat trick was produced by Landon Donovan (Sept. 20, 2003, at KC). Eight-Game Superlatives At 6-1-1 and 19 points, this is the best eight-game start to a year in the San Jose Earthquakes’ 15-season club history. In 2001, 2002 and 2010, the Quakes trotted out to a 5-2-1 start for 16 points. They were 4-2-2 (14 pts.) in 2003 before going on to lift the franchise’s second MLS Cup. With just six goals conceded thus far, this is the franchise’s best eight-game defensive start. San Jose allowed seven goals over its first eight matches in 2010 and eight in 2002. At 3-0-1 for 10 points over their first four road dates, the Quakes are also off to their best four-game road start. They were 2-1-1 for seven points following their first four road forays in 2001, 2003 and 2010. The Quakes’ 15 goals fall one short of their best eight-game output of 16 from 2004. They also tallied 15 goals through eight games in 1998. Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot Chris Wondolowski begins the week alone in second-place in the 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot race with a team-leading eight goals. New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry moved into sole possession of the top spot with his ninth of the campaign in the seventh minute of his side’s 1-0 home win over New England on Saturday, before having to leave the game with a hamstring injury. Yallop’s Super Subs Quakes head coach Frank Yallop used just two of his allotted three substitutions at Philadelphia on Saturday. He inserted Marvin Chavez and Steven Lenhart together in the 60th minute for Sam Cronin and Tressor Moreno. All the duo did was combine for two goals and two assists as the speedy winger fed the target forward for headers on both Quakes strikes, from the left and right side, respectively.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. D.C. United, May 2, 2012, 7:30 p.m. PT Lenny Opens Scoring Account Quakes forward Steven Lenhart scored his first two goals of the 2012 season at Philadelphia on April 28. They were his first goals since the 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls at Stanford Stadium on July 2, 2011. Lenhart’s stoppage-time winner marked goal No. 20 for his five-year MLS career. He now has seven strikes in 20 appearances in a San Jose uniform. April 28 Wrap-Up The Quakes are already at 6-1-1 after finishing with just eight wins a year ago, and have six victories before the end of April, having achieved win No. 6 on Sept. 10 in 2011 … Steven Lenhart’s two-goal night marked the third multi-goal performance by a San Jose player in 2012 … It was Lenhart’s third career multi-goal game and second for San Jose … With his two assists, Marvin Chavez became the fourth Quakes player to produce a multi-assist game this year … It was the first multi-assist match of Chavez’s MLS career … Though his five-game goal-scoring streak came to an end on the night, Chris Wondolowski was credited with an assist on the opener in the 76th minute, extending his run of games with either a goal or an assist to six, tied for MLS’ longest active streak with Thierry Henry. A-Head of the Pack In Saturday’s 2-1 win at Philadelphia, the Quakes added to their league-leading total of headed goals, as both ends of Steven Lenhart’s brace came via header to give San Jose eight on the year as a team. Each of the last six Earthquakes goals, in fact, have been of the headed variety: Chris Wondolowski’s equalizer at New York (4/14), all three goals versus RSL (4/21) and the two scores in Philadelphia. Wondolowski (3) and Lenhart (2) have led the way, with Simon Dawkins, Alan Gordon and Khari Stephenson heading in one apiece. Quakes Teaming Up Through Week 8 of the 2012 MLS season, San Jose paces the entire league with 20 assists. Steven Beitashour’s two assists against Real Salt Lake gave the third-year right back a team-leading four for 2012. He is tied for third in MLS. Beitashour, who led the team with seven helpers a year ago, now has 11 assists in his last 25 appearances. Marvin Chavez is second on the squad with three assists. Quakes Shaking Up Opponents’ Record Streaks The Quakes have put an end to a pair of lengthy, record shutout streaks by their opponents of 400-plus minutes this season. At home against Vancouver on April 7, Chris Wondolowski’s equalizer in the 68th minute halted a 427-minute shutout stretch for the ‘Caps, a new MLS record to begin a season. On April 28 at Philadelphia, Steven Lenhart opened the scoring in the 76th minute, stopping a clean stretch of 407 minutes for the Union defense, a franchise record. Stoppage-Time Heart-Stoppers San Jose has won back-to-back matches courtesy of stoppage-time strikes. Simon Dawkins’ near-post header to the far corner at 92+ when six minutes were added on sent the Quakes to a 3-1 victory at home over Real Salt Lake and vaulted them into first-place in the Western Conference on April 21. Exactly one week later at PPL Park, it was a back-post Steven Lenhart header as the game moved into the last of three added-time minutes that gave San Jose a 2-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Union. Combined with the Vancouver result from April 7, the Quakes have scored three game-winners in the 72nd minute or later so far this season. Class in the Back For each of the past two games, Frank Yallop’s four-player defensive line has consisted of three fellow members of San Jose’s 2010 MLS SuperDraft class: Ike Opara (1st Round, No. 3, Wake Forest) at center back, Justin Morrow (2nd Round, No. 28, Notre Dame) at left back and Steven Beitashour (2nd Round, No. 30, San Diego State) at right back. The two starts were the first on the year for Opara. Morrow was the starting left back for the first two times this year in the injury absence of captain Ramiro Corrales, after beginning each of the first six contests at center back. It’s Wondo’s World… -Eight goals in first eight games of 2012 (second in Budweiser Golden Boot standings behind Thierry Henry of NYRB with nine) -Current six-game streak of providing either a goal or an assist (tied with Henry for longest active stretch in MLS) -One goal shy of No. 50 for his MLS career, currently at 49 -Leads MLS for third straight year in game-winning goals with three -Leads MLS for second straight year in road goals with four (tied with Houston’s Will Bruin) -14 goals over the last 13 games dating back to 2011 -16 goals over the last 17 games -Scored in 13 of the Quakes’ last 17 games -Scored 14 of the Quakes’ last 24 goals -Since start of 2010 season, scored 42 of San Jose’s 89 goals, or 47 percent -Since start of 2010 season, 42 goals in 66 matches equals a per-game average of 0.64 -Since start of 2010 season, tallied winning goal in 17 of the Earthquakes’ 27 victories, or 63 percent -String of scoring game-winning goal in six straight Quakes victories from Sept. 10, 2011-March 31, 2012 -42 goals since 2010 is 10 more than next closest in MLS during same stretch (Dwayne De Rosario) -Has most game-winning goals (17) and road goals (21) in all of MLS since start of 2010 season -Just the 10th player in MLS history with 16 or more goals over a 16-game span -Trails only Ronald Cerritos (61) for No. 1 on the all-time San Jose scoring chart with 45 -Club records of 18 game-winners and eight multi-goal performances (tied with Cerritos for latter) -San Jose is 22-4-9 (.757) all-time in games in which he scores

Road Warrior After completing the 2011 season in a tie with Fredy Montero of Seattle Sounders FC for the most goals scored away from home at nine apiece, Chris Wondolowski opened his new road account with a two-goal brace at Toronto FC in the Quakes’ 2012 road debut on March 24. In 2011, Wondolowski collected his ninth in San Jose’s last away fixture of the year with a 24th-minute strike against Seattle Sounders FC on Oct. 15 at CenturyLink Field, to pull even with Montero, who he opposed again on that same field on March 31 and came up with the game’s lone goal. Wondolowski currently leads MLS with four road goals in 2012, tied with Houston’s Will Bruin. He finished third in road goals in 2010 with eight, behind Dwayne De Rosario (10), then of Toronto FC, and Juan Pablo Angel (9), then of the New York Red Bulls. The list of MLS leaders in road goals since the start of the 2010 season follows: 1. Chris Wondolowski (SJ) – 21 2. Dwayne De Rosario (DC) – 16 3. Juan Pablo Angel (CHV) – 14 4. Fabian Espindola (RSL), Marco Pappa (CHI) – 9 Record-Breaking Winner for Wondo Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski wasted little time in opening his goal-scoring account for the 2012 campaign, the two-time MLS leader needing just under 15 minutes of the season opener against the New England Revolution on March 10 to find the back of the net. The right-footed strike from just outside the penalty area moved Wondolowski into sole possession of the all-time club record for gamewinning goals, which he previously shared with Quakes great Ronald Cerritos at 15 deciders apiece. With a league-best three in 2012,
San Jose Earthquakes vs. D.C. United, May 2, 2012, 7:30 p.m. PT Wondolowski now has 18 career game-winners, and is up to 14th on the all-time MLS chart, tied with three others. While Jeff Cunningham compiled his record 40 winners in 365 appearances, Wondolowski’s current haul has come in just 119 games. Since the start of the 2010 season, Wondolowski has accounted for the decisive goal in 17 of the Earthquakes’ 27 victories, or 63 percent. They finished 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, an unbeaten 12-0-2 in 2010 and 7-4-5 last season. The Quakes are off to a 5-0-0 start to the 2012 campaign. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 21 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011, and 5-0-0 early in 2012. The Quakes are 74-8-18 (.830) in eight seasons under Yallop when striking first. Halftime Success The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 73-3-15 (.885) when leading at the half, including impressive marks of 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 4-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Wells Fargo Goals for Education Wells Fargo has again pledged to donate $250 for each goal the Earthquakes score in 2012 through the Goals for Education program. With 15 goals through eight games, the donated total for this season currently stands at $3,750. Thanks to 40 goals in 2011, the partnership raised $10,000 for local youth soccer and athletic development programs a year ago. After fielding dozens of applications, the Earthquakes and Wells Fargo awarded 16 grants to deserving organizations, and with Quakes midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong on hand, made special check presentations at America SCORES Bay Area and Castro Valley Soccer Club in January.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. D.C. United, May 2, 2012, 7:30 p.m. PT Earthquakes, Wondolowski Support Street Soccer USA Two-time MLS leading goal-scorer Chris Wondolowski and Street Soccer USA, a non-profit organization that seeks to end homelessness through sports, have partnered to make a difference in the lives of the homeless in the Bay Area through the “One Goal at a Time” campaign. For every goal Wondolowski scores during the 2012 season, the Quakes star has pledged a $100 donation to Street Soccer USA (SSUSA), and is asking fans to join in his mission. Additionally, the Earthquakes Community Fund will match Wondolowski’s donations. Wondolowski, who has been a national ambassador for SSUSA since August of 2011, got an early start on his 2012 scoring account with a strike in San Jose’s season opener on March 10, and now has a team-leading eight goals already through eight contests. Quakes Get Go-Ahead from San Jose Planning Commission on New Stadium The San Jose Planning Commission voted 6-0 to uphold the Earthquakes’ Planned Development Permit on Feb. 22, paving the way for the club to break ground on its new stadium at 1125 Coleman Avenue. The Earthquakes’ PD Permit was initially consented for approval by city planners on Dec. 14, but was appealed by a Newhall Neighborhood Association member on Jan. 1. Fans clad in Earthquakes colors filled the council chambers to capacity. Owner Lew Wolff, Club President Dave Kaval and MLS President Mark Abbott spoke on behalf of the Quakes, among numerous community members and stakeholders, for over two hours before the commission closed discussion and took action on the appeal. The club has already sold 10 of 12 available field-level luxury suites for its new stadium, generating over $3.5 million in revenue for the project. United’s MLS-best unbeaten streak
San Jose connection
D.C. United’s seven-game unbeaten streak is the current best in MLS. The streak began with a 0-0 tie with Vancouver Whitecaps FC back on March 24. During the seven-game stretch, the Black-andRed have netted 14 goals, while only allowing six. A big factor during the streak has been both the impressive performance of United’s defense, but also the good form of strikers Chris Pontius and Maicon Santos.
Brandon McDonald, one of D.C. United’s stalwart defenders, was signed in June of last year from the San Jose Earthquakes. McDonald spent three seasons with the club, where he appeared in 58 games. McDonald also netted three goals while with the club and tallied three assists.
Major defensive improvement Despite an inconsistent pairing in the central of defense, D.C. United has allowed multiple goals only twice this season – and both came against last year’s MLS Cup participants. United fell 1-3 to the LA Galaxy on March 18 and defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-2 on April 28. Additionally, United has allowed just 10 goals through nine games in 2012. Last year, the team had given up 17 goals through its first nine matches.
Santos red-hot Maicon Santos has proven to be a formidable force leading United’s attack. With six goals through nine games this season, Santos has scored the fourth-most goals in MLS. He had his second multi-goal game of the season against the Houston Dynamo last Saturday, March 28. Last year, in his third MLS season, Santos scored eight goals during a season split between Toronto and Dallas. Pontius moves forward After starting D.C. United’s first two matches of 2012, Chris Pontius found himself in an unusual place – on the bench. Still recovering from last year’s broken leg, the team’s longest-tenured player came off the bench in midfield in each of the next three games, before Ben Olsen inserted him at forward late in the team’s match against New England on April 14. Pontius responded by scoring the match-winner and has now earned starts up top each of the last three games. The 24-year old notched his first career hat trick in DC’s 4-1 win over New York on April 22 and has paired well with Maicon Santos.
United leads League in shots Part of the early offensive success for D.C. United can be traced to the number of chances the squad has created. United 129 shots is first in the League (tied with Sporting KC). The Black-and-Red is averaging over 14 shots per contest, and that means goals – United has 15 on the season, trailing only New York (18) and Real Salt Lake (16).
DeRo targets former teams Dwayne De Rosario likes to make his former clubs hurt, having scored ten goals against former teams in his MLS career. DeRo has scored four goals against his first MLS club, the San Jose Earthquakes, notching two separate braces with both D.C. United (7/30/11) and Toronto FC (5/9/10). With a goal against Houston on Saturday, De Rosario has now scored against each of his former MLS clubs while with the Black-and-Red.
DeLeon closing in on club history The club record for most League goals scored during a rookie season is five, achieved by Santino Quaranta (2001), Freddy Adu (2004) and Andy Najar (2010). D.C. United’s first-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, Nick DeLeon, is closing in on that record quickly – netting three through his first seven games played for the Black-and-Red.
DeRo as maestro Dwayne DeRosario’s teams have lost only 1 of the last 37 games where he recorded an assist (25–1–11). The streak has been running since May of 2005. DeRo is also second in the League with five assists, tied with Theirry Henry (NY) and behind only Graham Zusi (KC). Willis continue to impress With starter Bill Hamid away with the U.S. U-23 Olympic team and then recovering from an ankle injury, goalkeeper Joe Willis has seized the opportunity presented him with both hands – and hasn’t let go. The second-year goalkeeper is 4-1-3, with two shutouts, 22 saves and an impressive goals-against average of 1.13. More than any stat line, the 6-foot, 5-inch Willis has shown his worth by making huge, momentum-changing stops in every match he’s played.
Dykstra back on loan Last week, D.C. United loaned backup goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to USL PRO side Charleston Battery until May 20, 2012. Dykstra was previously loaned to the Battery earlier in April and posted a 1-1 record while with the club, including a shutout in 180 minutes of play. Neal debuts, plays in three straight When D.C. United signed 30-year old journeyman Lewis Neal on March 18, most thought the Englishman would be providing numbers in training. The coaching staff, however, has turned to Neal in each of the last three games as a late sub. Neal made his debut in the 1-1 draw against Montreal on March 18, and has totaled 15 total minutes of play.
De Rosario wins 2011 MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario’s 2011 season was an usual one, to say the least. The 4-time MLS Cup winner started the season in Toronto, before being shipped to New York. After just a few weeks in New York, D.C. United acquired him for Dax McCarty. DeRo was motivated and went on to score 13 goals in 18 games for DC. He led MLS with 16 goals, to go along with 12 assists en route to winning his first League MVP award. DeRo signed a long-term deal with United during the offseason and may very well finish his career in DC.
Wolff’s role as player-coach
If there’s one thing that helps you stand above the rest in MLS, it’s experience, and that’s why Josh Wolff is taking on the new role of player-coach with D.C. United. An MLS and U.S. Men’s National Team veteran, Wolff’s experiences all over the world, his personality, and his skills on the pitch will make him an integral part of the team this season on the field and in the locker room. Wolff signed as a player with D.C. United on December 15, 2010. Last season, Wolff started 23 of the 30 games he appeared in and logged close to 2,000 minutes, netting five goals and assisting on seven more.
Coming off the worst season in club history (6-20-4 in 2010), D.C. United made major strides in 2011. The team increased its goal output from 21 in 2010 to 49 last season. The team was in the playoff race until the final week of the season and finished with a record of 913-12 (39 points). Injuries to Dejan Jakovic and Chris Pontius in the same week in September saw United finish the season 1-6-2 down the stretch without both in the lineup. Ultimately, it was largely the absence of those two players that saw United miss out on the postseason for the fourth year in a row.

Impressive history
Following a fourth straight season without making the post-season, Head Coach Ben Olsen and the technical staff made the difficult decision to part ways with several club veterans. Santino Quaranta (10 seasons in DC), Clyde Simms (seven seasons), Devon McTavish (six seasons), and Marc Burch (five seasons) are no longer with the team, which makes Chris Pontius (drafted in 2009) as the longesttenured player on the team.
D.C. United is the most successful professional soccer team in United States history. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998.
