May 18, 2013 (WEEK 12, MLS Game #108) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA+/CSN-BA; Altitude) The San Jose Earthquakes return home looking to reverse their recent fortunes and slow down a hot Colorado Rapids club when the clubs meet Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes are coming off a 4-0 loss at Seattle Sounders FC last weekend. The Quakes sit in a tie for fifth place in the Western Conference with 14 points from 12 matches. LAST MATCH  The opener came in the 28th minute. After a turnover at the center line, Sounders FC broke the other way, with Eddie Johnson's low cross chested down by Mauro Rosales for an on-rushing Lamar Neagle to hammer past Jon Busch.  It was 2-0 just just moments before the halftime whistle. After a foul just outside the left corner of the Earthquakes area, Rosales curled a 20-yard free kick off the inside the near post and past Busch's five.  Neagle and Sounders FC put the game away in the 54th minute. The forward fought off a pair of Quakes defenders to control Servando Carrasco's pass and then put a left-footed shot inside Busch's left-hand post from the edge of the area.  The rout complete in stoppage time, when Obafemi Martins took advantage of a clearance that bounced off a Quakes teammate right into his path to poke into the goal from close range.  Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made three changes to the team that came back for a 2-1 victory against Toronto FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. Justin Morrow came into the back four for Nana Attakora, Ramiro Corrales started in midfield for Shea Salinas, and Alan Gordon returned from suspension in place of Adam Jahn.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Justin Morrow, Victor Bernardez, Dan Gargan - Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales (Shea Salinas 64), Walter Martinez - Alan Gordon (Marcus Tracy 65), Chris Wondolowski. While the Earthquakes lost for first time since the 1-0 defeat by Portland on April 14, they have won just once in the last eight matches. “I told the guys in there it's about both boxes. It's about defending our box properly and being dangerous and getting to the ball first in the opposing box and I think Seattle did that better than us today,” said Yallop. “And they came out four-goal winners. Again, we've just got to take stock on how we went about it. We'll watch film and we've just got to dust ourselves off.” Said goalkeeper Jon Busch: “To be honest, this is a good test for us. Adversity is a great thing. You find out the strength of a man through adversity — not when things are good, when things are tough. And that’s where we are right now ... We’re going to be fine. We’ve just got to tighten some things up.” The 4-0 loss was San Jose’s worst since being defeated by Real Salt Lake by the same score on July 23, 2011. “Almost every game, there are defining moments,” midfielder Sam Cronin said. “You’ve got to win those moments, and we haven’t been winning those. …We’ve got to be better at limiting chances, and then when we get our chances, do better at scoring them, because we’re letting our chances leak by and they score another, and then it gets out of control like it did today.” Justin Morrow was forced to move into central defense after Nana Attakora suffered concussion-like symptoms following a clash of heads during the Toronto FC match. Jason Hernandez was unavailable for a seventh consecutive match with a calf strain, and Ty Harden was out for a fifth consecutive game with osteitis pubis. “You do what you’ve got to do,” Yallop said. “We don’t have anybody else to play there, right now. Justin’s played there before. Do I think it worked out smoothly? Obviously not, we conceded four goals. That isn’t good.” After missing four games through suspension, Alan Gordon started in attack alongside Chris Wondolowski. Steven Lenhart was ruled out for the match after reinjuring his bruised heel, and rookie Adam Jahn suffered a thigh contusion late in the Toronto FC match. The Quakes were also without Marvín Chávez, following a ruling by the MLS Disciplinary Committee the day before the game. However, there was good news ahead of the Colorado game as Chávez’s suspension was reduced from two games to just the one already served. “You don’t think one player makes a difference?” Yallop asked. “Most teams in MLS, they’ll say there’s one key guy [that] you kind of miss. And I think all our players are good, but I think we missed Marvin. I really do.” Ramiro Corrales came back into the team after a three-match absence, and was slotted into central midfield alongside Rafael Baca, as Walter Mártinez shifted to a wide role on the left of the Quakes midfield. “Ramiro [Corrales] is used to playing in the middle of the field and I felt that with [Rafael] Baca's energy and running ability – not full sprinting – but his movement, him and Walter [Martinez] I thought would handle the ball well in those spots and allow our fullbacks to get forward,” said Yallop. “If you look at the general play, I thought Walter had a good game. I thought that Sam Cronin and Rafa; Ramiro's maybe not on his game today, but I think that you can't fault the shape of the team or anything.”

COLORADO RAPIDS The Colorado Rapids won a second match in a row, coming away from Crew Stadium with a 2-0 victory against the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening. The Rapids are in fourth place in the Western Conference with 15 points from 11 matches. LAST MATCH  The Rapids took the lead after just eight minutes. Taking a layoff from Atiba Harris, Edson Buddle brought the ball down in the middle of the area and hooked it past goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum.  Colorado hit for a second in the 69th minute. From a free kick in the right corner, the restart pinged out to the top of the box, where Dillon Powers struck the ball low and hard back toward goal which took a dramatic ricochet off defender Josh Williams that left Gruenebaum wrongfooted.  Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja made two changes to the team that defeated Toronto FC 1-0 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Martin Rivero and Edson Buddle came into the team, replacing Nick LaBrocca and Kamani Hill.  COLORADO RAPIDS (4-2-3-1): Clint Irwin - Brian Mullan, Shane O'Neill, Drew Moor, Christopher Klute - Dillon Powers, Nathan Sturgis - Atiba Harris, Martin Rivero (Nick LaBrocca 89), Danny Mwanga (Deshorn Brown 64) Edson Buddle (Pablo Mastroeni 80) TEAM NEWS  The Rapids matched their season-long winning run with a second consecutive victory, also winning two in a row April 6-13. The Rapids are 4-1-1 since April 6, with four defensive shutouts in that time.  “The boys were very disciplined. We were very concentrated on the job. Defensively was a huge performance. Solid. I saw the team growing a lot,” said Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja. “Now we managed the game very well. We took advantage of the opportunities we had. And we played against a good team as well. So everything came well for us.”

Said defender Drew Moor: “I don’t think it’s just the backline, I think it’s the entire unit is just battling extremely hard, not letting other teams get anything easy. We’re staying organized, we’re staying solid. We are winning our first and second balls, we are winning our individual challenges.” It was just the second time this season the Rapids hit for two goals in a game, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw with Portland on March 30. The Rapids are now 2-2-2 away from Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this season. A year ago, the Rapids also had just four results total away from home, going 3-10-1 for the season. “I think it has a lot to do with a different mentality this year. Not that we have a completely new philosophy or mentality this year, it’s just a little bit stronger willed I feel like,” said Moor. “We believe that we can go on the road and get results. We proved that tonight, we proved it a couple of other times so far this season. Road game is the same as a home game, you want to go try and get as many points as you can.” Making his first start since April 13, Edson Buddle scored his second goal for the club in a second consecutive game. “Edson is a player that we have been waiting for. The guy, he knows what to do in the box,” Pareja said. “… When you have someone to put the ball in the back of the net, everything looks better.” However, following a ruling by the MLS Disciplinary Committee, Buddle will be suspended for the San Jose match after a challenge was ruled reckless during the Columbus match. Dillon Powers scored his second goal of his rookie season, having started every match this season for Colorado. He’s played every minute of nine consecutive matches. "The young guys have the willingness, the desire, the passion but normally they don't have the experience to know when to push and at some point they hit a wall," Pareja said of Powers. "And they're not going to come to you and say, 'Hey, I'm tired.' They are going to keep going. And we need to see them and start noticing when they need a break.”

Last Game Earthquakes 0, Seattle Sounders FC 4; May 11, 2013; CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash. The Earthquakes fell 4-0 against Seattle Sounders FC in front of a crowd of 38,880, snapping a four-game winning streak against their hosts. Seattle forward Lamar Neagle opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Eddie Johnson played Mauro Rosales in the middle of the area where the Argentine midfielder used his chest to lay a pass off for Neagle. Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch nearly pushed the ensuing shot wide, but the powerful blast careened off his hands and into the net. Rosales doubled Seattle’s haul moments before the halftime whistle. Earthquakes midfielder Rafael Baca was whistled for a foul and issued a yellow card after he was deemed to have taken Brad Evans down just outside the box. Rosales capitalized, sending the free kick off the post and into the net. Neagle tallied his second of the match in the 54th minute. After pressuring Seattle to start the second half, the Earthquakes allowed Neagle a slim opening on a Sounders FC counter attack. Neagle took advantage, slamming his shot off the post and into the net. Obafemi Martins tacked on Seattle’s fourth goal two minutes into stoppage time, polishing off a close-range shot after Justin Morrow's attempted clearance deflected off a San Jose defender and to the feet of the Nigerian Designated Player.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Colorado Rapids, May 18, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT OPPONENT INFO Last Game vs. Colorado Rapids Earthquakes 4, Colorado Rapids 1; Oct. 6, 2012; Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. Chris Wondolowski tallied a hat trick in the Earthquakes’ 4-1 win against the Colorado Rapids. The trio of goals also moved the iconic striker past Ronald Cerritos for the club’s all-time goal-scoring record with 62. Despite playing on the road at altitude on a frigid Denver night, the Earthquakes bolted out of the gate for a dominant performance. They didn’t wait long to open the scoring as Marvin Chavez slammed home a ball laid off by Wondolowski from the edge of the area in the second minute. The goal was Chavez’s second of the season. Wondolowski accounted for San Jose’s final three goals for his second hat trick and sixth multi-goal game of the season. His first came in the 11th minute as Chavez sprung Rafael Baca down the left sideline before the second-year midfielder placed a cross inside the Rapids’ 6-yard box. Wondolowski was waiting on the doorstep and chested in a 2-0 lead. The Danville native doubled his haul early in the second half, pounding a shot on target that deflected off a Colorado defender and into the goal. After Alan Gordon drew crossbar with a shot in the 62nd minute, Wondolowski went ahead and capped his hat trick in the 83rd. Sam Cronin threaded the needle to find the Budweiser Golden Boot leader open behind Colorado’s back line before Wondolowski turned and fired for his 25th goal of the season. The Rapids scored their goal in the 92nd minute after Jason Hernandez was whistled for a foul in the area. Hernandez received a red card for the infraction and Andre Akpan netted the spot kick to round out the 4-1 result. Scoring: COL: Andre Akpan (Unassisted), 92.
