FC DALLAS vs SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FC DALLAS STADIUM, Frisco, Texas May 25, 2013 (WEEK 13, MLS Game #116) 7:30 p.m. CT (KTXA; CSN-CA) Their long undefeated run put to an end, FC Dallas return home to face last year’s Supporters’ Shield winners, the San Jose Earthquakes, in a key Western Conference matchup Saturday evening in Frisco. Still Western Conference leader, FCD went down to defeat for the first time in 10 games last weekend, dropping a 4-2 decision at Seattle Sounders FC. The Quakes have won just once in their last nine games, following a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids at Buck Shaw Stadium last weekend. REFEREE: Hilario Grajeda. The Quakes have won three of the six meetings since, with three draws.  FC Dallas hasn’t won in Santa Clara since 2009. The Quakes have won two of the four home meetings since, with two draws.  Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. DAL: P27 W14 L7 T6 … Schellas Hyndman vs. SJ: P10 W2 L3 T5 FC DALLAS FC Dallas saw their undefeated streak come to an end after nine games, falling 4-2 to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. FCD sit atop the Western Conference with 24 points from 12 matches. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso won a header at midfield that sailed back over the Dallas defense and sent it forward where Eddie Johnson outmuscled a defender before hitting a half-volley past FCD 'keeper Raul Fernandez.  It was 2-0 in the 30th minute. This time Brad Evans played set-up man with a through ball to Lamar Neagle, who timed his run perfectly. He ran in free on goal, rounded Fernandez and slid the ball into an empty net.  Behind some brilliant set-piece work from Michel, FC Dallas pulled level. In the 54th minute, he served a perfectly placed freekick from the right side that an unmarked Kenny Cooper easily headed home from the heart of the area.  Seven minutes later, Michel pulled off one of the rarest feats in the game, an "olimpico," whipping a corner kick up and over the outstretched arms of Gspurning and into the far side netting.  But less than a minute later, Sounders FC re-took the lead. Neagle cut across the top of the Dallas area and slid a clever pass through to Johnson, and he calmly dribbled around Fernandez and struck home for his second goal of the night.  FC Dallas went a man down when Blas Perez was shown a red card by referee Mark Geiger for a stray elbow in the 72nd minute that opened a gash in defender Leo Gonzalez's face.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Obafemi Martins then put the game away with a goal in the 83rd minute, tucking home from close range after Fernandez had saved a point-blank header from Johnson.  FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made two changes to the team that defeated D.C. United 2-1 in Frisco. Raul Fernandez came back in between the posts for Chris Seitz, and Kenny Cooper came into the side in place of Fabian Castillo.  FC DALLAS (4-2-3-1): Raul Fernandez - Zach Loyd, London Woodberry (Walker Zimmerman 85), Matt Hedges, Jair Benitez - Michel, Je-Vaughn Watson - Jackson, Blas Perez (sent off 73), Kenny Cooper (Fabian Castillo 64) - Eric Hassli TEAM NEWS  FC Dallas saw their nine-game undefeated streak come to an end in the loss in Seattle, their first defeat since March 10.  “We had too many players that didn't have a real good game and that didn't help us. I think we let Seattle dictate the game. It was very fast-paced, and that's something we shouldn't be doing,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “But as I said to the players, we're a good team. What we've got to do is get over this one and find our winning ways again.”  FC Dallas midfielder Michel scored one of the rarest of all goals – a “gol olimpico”, directly from a corner kick. It was the fourth olimpico scored in the last three seasons in league play: New York’s Thierry Henry did it last Sept. 15 vs. Columbus and Chicago’s Marco Pappa also scored one – against Sounders FC – last April 28. Beckham did it for the LA Galaxy on July 9, 2011; he also scored one in a CONCACAF Champions League game last Aug. 23 vs. El Salvador’s Isidro Metapán.  “His service is incredible, I think he is one of the best in the league. We are very fortunate to have him,” said Kenny Cooper. “On plays and set pieces he has very, very good delivery, and has done a great job for us the whole season. He is a real difference maker, I think everyone can see that.”  Eric Hässli started for a second consecutive game in attack, with Blas Perez filling more of an underneath role, before he was sent off with 17 minutes remaining.  “We did not play with three forwards; we played in a 4-4-2 that we have been playing since David Ferreira has been injured, so I don't know if the tactics mattered,” said Hyndman. “I think probably the bigger thing that mattered was that I think our guys lost their composure and emotions with what they considered some of the calls that weren't being made, and then you're just disappointed.”  FCD was without center back George John for a third consecutive match, with rookie London Woodberry starting his third game in central defense.  “I think the interesting thing was that they went at London the whole game, putting players on him," Hyndman said. "I don’t know if George would have much difficulty with them. But it wasn’t just London. I don’t think our defense was exceptional, and it had to be exceptional [vs. Seattle]."  FC Dallas were also missing Andrew Jacobson for a third consecutive match, and David Ferreira was out for a second game in a row.  “I've got David Ferreira out, he's our captain and I consider him the best player on the field. And we've got Andrew Jacobson out,” said Hyndman. “So I think before we get too hard on ourselves and what we got to do, we've just got to get over this one.” SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes extended their home undefeated streak to seven games, coming back for a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes sit in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with 15 points from 13 matches. LAST MATCH  Colorado took the lead in the in the 26th minute when Nathan Sturgis neatly turned home a Martin Rivero corner kick at the near post, squirting the ball between a defender and goalkeeper Jon Busch.  But the Earthquakes found the leveler in the 78th minute. Marvin Chavez, in the lineup after having an appeal of a suspension upheld, drilled a knuckling free kick from 30 yards out that beat Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin.  Colorado played a man down from the 90th minute after defender Shane O’Neill brought Chris Wondolowski down just outside the penalty area, but San Jose could not take advantage.  Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made two changes to the team that fell 4-0 to Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Jason Hernandez came into the back four for Dan Gargan, and Marvin Chavez re-entered the side in place of Ramiro Corrales.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Marvin Chavez, Sam Cronin (Steven Lenhart 56), Rafael Baca (Adam Jahn 42), Walter Martinez - Chris Wondolowski, Alan Gordon. TEAM NEWS  While the Earthquakes have not lost at Buck Shaw Stadium since opening the season with a 2-0 defeat by Real Salt Lake, they have won once in their last nine games.

“We need to win home games. Have we played well enough to win more than we have? Yes, but again it’s about getting points,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “It’s not from a lack of effort, which would be a problem if it were, but it isn’t. I like our effort right now, our drive. We have to play with a little more confidence and a little more guile around the goal.” Said defender Jason Hernandez: “On one hand, we can say, ‘OK, we’re not getting beat.’ That’s a positive. But we like to think we should be winning these matches. It’s good not to be losing matches, but at the same time, we expect a lot from ourselves. And we expect to win games. That’s the attitude we’re always going to have.” Marvín Chávez scored his first goal of the season, a stunning free kick strike, to bring San Jose back for the draw with Colorado. Chávez has appeared in five of San Jose’s last six matches; when he’s appeared, they are 1-0-4. “Marvin is quite the X factor for us,” Hernandez said. “When he’s playing well, he brings a unique dimension to our team. Obviously, you saw [against Colorado] how active he was and how dangerous he was. ... Moving forward, he’s going to be big for us.” The Quakes were forced into a change before halftime when Rafael Baca had to come off, and supersub striker Adam Jahn came into his midfield spot. “We were one down anyway and [Baca] had a bit of a tight hamstring, so it was kind of an easy decision to make. We put Adam [Jahn] on, who can play in the midfield no problem,” said Yallop. “He proved that, and actually nearly scored before halftime with the header. When you’re down 1-0, you’re trying to make changes to get back in the match.” Steven Lenhart was also able to make his first appearance since April 27, missing two matches to suspension in that span. It marked the first time since April 14 that Yallop was able to deploy Lenhart along with strikers Chris Wondolowski and Alan Gordon at the same time. “They’re still not 100 percent. Lenhart has been on-and-off and injured a little bit for the last few months and he hasn’t hit his stride yet. I think we’re pretty close to full strength and now it’s time to play more together and play well,” said Yallop. “We’re good when we have confidence and I think that it’s pretty close but it’s just not quite there.” The match in Dallas is the first of four consecutive matches – and six of the next seven in league play – away from Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes are 0-3-2 on the road this season, one of five teams in MLS still looking for a first road win. “We were really good on the road last season. This team knows how to win on the road so not much will change in our form to get our first road win of the season,” said Alan Gordon. “We put ourselves in a position that we need to return home with some points and I am positive we will do so.”

Last Game Earthquakes 1, Colorado Rapids 1; May 18, 2013; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Marvin Chavez struck from 30 yards out on a free kick to rally the Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids. San Jose extended its unbeaten streak against the Rapids to five games – 3-0-2 since a 2-1 loss at Buck Shaw Stadium on Aug. 13, 2011. The Rapids were first to the scoreboard thanks to strike from Nathan Sturgis. Martin Rivero swung a corner kick to the near post where Sturgis won position and volleyed home his first goal of the season in the 24th minute. Once again, the Earthquakes found an answer in the waning moments of the second half. Chavez teed his shot up in the 78th minute, knuckling a shot past Rapids goalkeeper Clint Erwin for his first goal of 2013. Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez made his first appearance since March 30, starting and playing the full 90 minutes. The veteran center back missed seven matches due to a concussion suffered against the Houston Dynamo on March 30 and a calf strain he picked up during training in April.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. FC Dallas, May 25, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. PT OPPONENT INFO Last Game vs. FC Dallas Earthquakes 3, Colorado Rapids 3; Sept. 29, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Steven Lenhart came off the bench and scored twice in the second half, including a 95th-minute equalizer, leading the Earthquakes to a 3-3 draw against FC Dallas. Alan Gordon started the scoring off for San Jose in the 24th minute. Marvin Chavez laced a cross to the far side of the box toward Chris Wondolowski, but the MVP frontrunner stepped over the ball and let it slide to Gordon. San Jose’s target man one-timed his shot into the net for his career-high 13th goal of the season. FC Dallas striker Blas Perez would score the game’s next two goals. The Panamanian international opened his account in the 37th minute, taking a Jackson pass in the box and tucking his shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch, who had charged off his line. He doubled his haul in the 72nd minute with a glancing header from inside the 6-yard box. Lenhart scored his first of two in the 82nd minute. The blond-haired striker headed a pass to Gordon who returned the favor before Lenhart punched a left-footed shot past FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman from just outside the 18yard box. The visitors scrapped out another go-ahead goal in the waning minutes. A Daniel Hernandez shot deflected off an Earthquakes defender and found the post. The ball bounced back into the mix and Bernardez knocked it away from an FC Dallas attacker on the doorstep, but Matt Hedges found the loose ball and put it away in the 88th minute for his third goal of the season. As they have all year, the Earthquakes found a way to carve out a result late in the match. This time, Justin Morrow whipped a cross into the mix and Gordon headed it toward the far post where Lenhart was waiting to head his shot in for the equalizer. San Jose has outscored FC Dallas 78-53 in 47 games since 1996 and has a 22-15-10 record during that span. Ballouchy Aiming for First Appearance of 2013 Earthquakes midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy is aiming to make his first appearance since tearing his left anterior-cruciate ligament in the 51st minute of a 3-3 draw against FC Dallas on Sept. 29, 2012. Ballouchy joined the Earthquakes in a trade from the New York Red Bulls for a conditional pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft and a 2013 international player spot on July 30, 2012. He made six appearances for San Jose before his season-ending injury. Goonies are Back Sam Cronin’s equalizer in the 91st minute to earn a 2-2 draw with the Montreal Impact on May 4 was the club’s third second-half stoppage time goal of the season. Last year, San Jose set a league record with nine such goals; their 12 between the start of 2012 and now is seven more than the next-closest team total. Comeback Kings Much like last season, the Earthquakes are the kings of MLS comebacks once again. Along with their three second-half stoppage time goals, San Jose has rallied to win or tie seven games in the second half, including last weekend’s 1-1 draw against the Colorado Rapids. Bernardez, Chavez Called to Honduran National Team Victor Bernardez and Marvin Chavez were called to Honduras national team duty on Monday. Cordell Cato broke through with the game’s first goal in the 38th minute. Colin Mitchell located Mehdi Ballouchy with a throw in on the near sideline, allowing the Moroccan midfielder to play a pass over the top of Colorado’s back line. The well-placed through ball met Cato in stride at the top of the box. The speedy winger took a touch past Rapids goalkeeper Steward Ceus and slotted his shot into an empty net. Danchrisandre Delgado, an unsigned second-round 2013 MLS SuperDraft pick out of the University of San Diego, was next to find the net. He started the play with a pass to Tommy Thompson on the right side of the box. Thompson cut back and immediately sent the ball back to Delgado, who created his own space with a touch before calmly finishing from close range in the 73rd minute. Mike Fucito capped the scoring with a blast from the edge of the area five minutes later. Sam Garza received a pass from Thompson in the middle of the field and then chipped a pass over Colorado’s back line to Fucito to set up the goal. Thompson, an Earthquakes Academy product, started and played 73 minutes. He is the club’s first Academy player to record an assist in a Reserve League match. The young attacker is committed to play for defending NCAA champion Indiana next fall.

March to 200 Continues The Earthquakes are nine wins away from their 200th as an MLS club. San Jose secured their 100th win on July 19, 2003 against D.C. United when the Earthquakes won 2-1. Manny Lagos scored the game winner in the 54th minute. Defend the Shield Since the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield in 2005, only three teams have successfully defended the shield in back-to-back seasons: the LA Galaxy 2010-11, Columbus Crew 2009-10 and D.C. United 2006-07. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. While most of the starting lineup is back in 2013, here’s a glance at the new additions bolstering the squad’s depth: D Dan Gargan – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 D Ty Harden – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 F Mike Fucito – Acquired via trade from Portland Timbers for second round SuperDraft pick on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on Feb. 13, 2013 D Peter McGlynn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on Feb. 15, 2013 D Nana Attakora – Signed on Feb. 22, 2013 after playing with FC Haka of Finland in 2012 F Adam Jahn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 D Tommy Muller – Acquired via MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 M Cordell Cato – Acquired via trade from Seattle Sounders FC on March 1, 2013 M Abu Tommy – Signed on March 12, 2013 after playing with FC Sheriff of Moldova in 2012 D Colin Mitchell – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 12, 2013 F/M Walter “Pery” Martinez – Signed on March 15, 2013 after playing with Chongqing FC in 2012 Historic Turnaround The Earthquakes improved by 28 points and 11 wins from their 2011 season, one of the best turnarounds in MLS history. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. FC Dallas, May 25, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. PT Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 6. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 87-9-27 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. So far in 2013, the Earthquakes are 1-0-3 when scoring first. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2 when scoring first, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 8-1-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (130-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The Quakes are 85-10-23 (.813) in nine seasons under Yallop when striking first. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011 and 14-2-1 in 2012 and is 1-0-3 so far in 2013. Halftime Success Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 93-3-19 (.898) when leading at the half, including a mark of 1-0-3 so far in 2013. The club was 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field, 4-2-2 in 2011, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage.
