United remain at home for a second consecutive weekend with an aim to end their club-record winless run, playing host to San Jose Earthquakes in an interconference clash Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United saw their winless run stretched to 13 games last weekend, falling 2-1 to Toronto FC on East Capitol Street. The Quakes opened the Mark Watson era with their first road win of the season, coming away from the Colorado Rapids with a 2-1 victory. REFEREE: Jair Marrufo. It was the first home win in the series since the 2010 season.  San Jose has won on each of its last three trips to the nation’s capital, dating back to 2009. United has won one of the last eight meetings between the teams (with two draws).  Coaches record: Ben Olsen v SJ: P1 W0 L1 D0 … Mark Watson vs. DC: first game D.C. UNITED D.C. United took a rare lead but couldn’t hold on, their club-record winless streak extended to 13 matches following a 21 loss to Toronto FC on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points from 15 matches. LAST MATCH  United opened the scoring. Nick DeLeon was clipped by Toronto defender Gale Agbossoumonde after a run and fell into the box, and referee Hilario Grajeda immediately pointed to the spot. Dwayne De Rosario converted United's first penalty kick of the season in the 19th minute, giving D.C. its first lead since March 9.  But the score was level on the half-hour. Steven Caldwell delivered a free kick into the area from the right flank at the halfway line, and Robert Earnshaw beat defender Brandon McDonald in a duel to head the ball by United ’keeper Bill Hamid.  Toronto took the lead for good in the 41st minute when Luis Silva floated a free kick into the box that deflected off the head of Daniel Woolard and by Hamid for United’s third own goal of the season.  United head coach Ben Olsen made five changes to the team that reached a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. Brandon McDonald and Alain Rochat came into the back four for James Rileyand Ethan White, and Sainey Nyassi, Dwayne De Rosario and Lionard Pajoy all came into the team in place of Kyle Porter, Chris Pontius and Carlos Ruiz.  D.C. The goal also snapped a string of 314 minutes without a goal for United, their longest stretch without scoring in MLS this season and the fifth-longest such run in the league this season. United have three of the 10 longest goalless droughts in MLS this year. “The losses are starting to hurt more and more, so it’s definitely tough. I don’t have much to say about it. It is what it is,” said midfielder Nick DeLeon. “ … You’ve got to continue to believe in it and continue to move forward by trying our best, but we’ve got to do something or change something. I don’t know. I don’t have any answers.” Days after his acquisition from Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Alain Rochat was inserted into the back four, as the left back, before moving forward in the second half. “[Alain] Rochat in his first game looked pretty good, at those spots. I thought he did a very good job in the holding midfield position,” said Olsen. “It’s not an easy task coming into the team with training and stepping in. I thought he had a good night.” Sainey Nyassi made his first league start for United, playing 61 minutes in a wide right role. Lionard Pajoy made his first MLS start since April 27, his first appearance in three league games. “I thought that some of the guys that came into the game, some of the newer guys, looked a little confused. We put a lot into that Open Cup, so I’m not putting too much stock into the energy level, but it’s still disappointing the way we played. There was a lack of ball movement, ideas in the final third,” said Olsen. Both Toronto FC goals started from set pieces, and United have now officially conceded eight goals from deadball opportunities this season, most in MLS. Chicago is next with five goals allowed on standard situations. “We didn’t really get in and win any set pieces. We gave them two by giving fouls and then not winning the first ball,” said Daniel Woolard, who scored an own goal on one of the set-piece chances. “… The free kick where they scored their first one – they had one guy in the box. They didn’t have many other chances other than what they scored on.” United have also officially allowed three own goals, second-most in MLS this season, behind Vancouver (4). Only New York, with 2, has also allowed more than one. “One or two is a lot in a season, so we’re at [three]. We’re not getting a lot of breaks in that sense. We obviously could have been better with the first goal, and the second one we’ve still got to attack the ball. We can’t be heading the ball back into our own goal,” said Olsen.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes won in the first match under Mark Watson as head coach, defeating the Colorado Rapids 21 on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Quakes sit in eighth place in the Western Conference with 18 points from 16 matches. LAST MATCH  The Earthquakes took the lead in the 11th minute. Alan Gordon flicked on a header out of the midfield from a Justin Morrow long ball and Steven Lenhart corraled it, holding up just in front of the area before blasting the ball past Rapids ‘keeper Clint Irwin’s fingertips.  The home side then went down a man seven minutes later when Atiba Harris came in on a late brutal tackle on San Jose's Alan Gordon, and referee Jorge Gonzalez showed a straight red card.  The Quakes doubled their lead seven minutes after the break. Rafael Baca’s looping through ball from midfield again broke down the Rapids’ back line, with a wide-open Sam Cronin running in alone on goal to hammer home a rising shot.  The Rapids pulled a goal back in the 67th minute when Brian Mullan, freed on the right by Martin Rivero, whipped in a cross that found Nathan Sturgis open for a simple header from close range.  Quakes interim head coach Mark Watson made three changes to the team that suffered a 3-0 loss to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Nana Attakora came into the back four for Brad Ring, and Rafael Baca and Steven Lenhart came into the side in place of Adam Jahn and Marvin Chavez.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Justin Morrow, Nana Attakora - Chris Wondolowski, Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Walter Martinez (Shea Salinas 86) - Alan Gordon (Mehdi Ballouchy 69), Steven Lenhart. TEAM NEWS  In Mark Watson’s first game in charge as interim head coach, the Earthquakes won for the first time since May 8. It was also the Quakes’ first away win this season; only Chicago and D.C. United have yet to win away from home this year.  “I've said this all along: We have a fantastic team, a good group of guys, great players, a great mentality, great work ethic … all the tools are there,” Watson said. “To turn the corner, I think it’s being confident, positive and addressing a few little things that we need to work on.”  Steven Lenhart scored his first goal of the season, making his first start since April 27. Lenhart’s last goal had come last Sept. 29 vs. FC Dallas, his 10th in regular season play a year ago.

“It was some finish by Lenny. He’s been knocking on the door. He’s been close; it’s taken some good saves by keepers to keep him off the board. But I thought today he played really well,” said Chris Wondolowski. Said Watson: “Lenny’s goal was fantastic. He took it well. It came from some hard work and pressing in the right areas.” It was just the second time this season the Quakes were able to run out Lenhart, Wondolowski and Alan Gordon together from the start of the match. The trio started April 14 vs. Portland, lasting together for the opening 63 minutes. “They don’t really base their game off speed,” Watson said. “It’s more working off each other and holding up the ball, and then bringing guys into play. I thought they did a good job of that tonight.” Said Sam Cronin: “If we can get them going, along with Wondo, it’s a pretty formidable strike force we have going. They were great tonight, just holding the ball up, really battling and making it tough on their center backs. Cronin scored his second goal of the season, a single-season career-high. He had scored two goals total in his first four MLS seasons. Rafael Baca also returned to the starting lineup after a two-match absence and contributed his first assist of the season. “This puts us in the right direction. It gives us the right mentality, gets the ball rolling for us, and builds our confidence. It's huge to get a win, especially on the road,” said Wondolowski.

GAME NOTES Rochat Named to FIFA 13 Ultimate Team of the Week After making his first start for D.C. United against Toronto FC on June 15, defender/midfielder Alain Rochat was named to the EA Sports FIFA 13 Ultimate Team of the Week as one of the world’s top-performing players. Rochat was one of seven representatives from MLS, showing his versatility in the game as he played at both left fullback and in central midfield. First PK of the Year Dwayne De Rosario’s penalty conversion against Toronto FC on 6/15 was D.C. United’s first of the year. Netting vs. the Earthquakes Only Los Angeles (80), Colorado (69), Columbus (62) and Kansas City (58) have scored more goals all-time vs. the San Jose Earthquakes than D.C. United (55). Home Goals vs. San Jose In the 16 matches all-time between D.C. United and the San Jose Earthquakes at RFK Stadium, the Black-and-Red has scored 32 goals and conceded just 25. Early Goals an Issue San Jose has scored just four goals all season in the first half of MLS regular season games, and just two in the first half-hour of matches in 2013. Making a Mark In United’s last game at home against Toronto FC, new signings Sainey Nyassi and Alain Rochat earned their first starts for the Black-and-Red. De Rosario vs. Former Teams The MLS veteran has featured for five different clubs in the League. De Rosario has notched 102 career MLS goals, and almost 1/4 of those goals (23) have come against a former team, including a penalty tally in United’s last match against Toronto FC on 6/15. All-Time Scorers vs. San Jose D.C. United has five active or retired players in the top 12 list of all-time scorers against the San Jose Earthquakes. Jaime Moreno is joint-fourth with nine goals in 22 games (19 starts). Roy Lassiter is joint-eighth with seven in 14 games (13 starts) alongside Raul Diaz Acre (11 games played, 10 starts). The retirees are followed by active United players Dwayne De Rosario (nine games, seven starts) and Carlos Ruiz (14 games, 12 starts), who have scored six goals apiece against San Jose and are joint-12th in the category.

Proven Goal Scorers Dwayne De Rosario and Carlos Ruiz account for 190 combined goals, more than any other two active players on any other MLS club roster. Steady Rhythm D.C. United has dominated possession in seven of its previous 10 matchups and enjoyed 58.2% of the time on the ball in the last game against Toronto. Finding the Net vs. San Jose United captain Dwayne De Rosario and forward Carlos Ruiz are both currently tied for the third-most strikes (6) by active players against the Quakes. With a goal tonight, either player would tie Landon Donovan for second in goals against the California side among active players. Defensive Frailties San Jose have conceded its joint-most number of goals (7) between the 16th and 30th minutes of games, while D.C. United have scored three of its seven goals in that same period. Poor Form on the Road San Jose has struggled away from home this season compiling a record of 1-5-2 on the road. The club’s first victory away from Buck Shaw Stadium this year came on 6/15 against the Colorado Rapids, a 2-1 win. Additionally, San Jose has scored just five road goals this year. Disciplinary Problems San Jose has seen its players cautioned 30 times already this season, the joint-second most in MLS alongside Chivas USA and just one less than Toronto FC. Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez has received the joint-most cautions for an individual player with six this season, tied with Bobby Burling of Chivas. First MLS Game D.C. United faced the then-San Jose Clash at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California in the first-ever game in the MLS history on 4/6/96. The Clash won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Eric Wynalda before a crowd of 31,683. D.C. would go on to win the League’s first MLS Cup (1996).

MILESTONES Winning History D.C. United is one of Major League Soccer’s most storied clubs. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998. Club Coaching Mark Tonight's match vs. the San Jose Earthquakes will be Ben Olsen's 96th regular-season game as Head Coach of D.C. United, tying Bruce Arena's mark with the club. 300 All-Time Wins With their victory over the Philadelphia Union on 06/12 in the U.S. Open Cup, D.C. United became the second team in MLS history to achieve 300 wins in all competitions. The LA Galaxy was the first team in MLS to achieve 300 victories. De Rosario: 20+ goals for Four clubs D.C. United captain Dwayne De Rosario is the only player in League history to score 20 League goals for four different MLS clubs, including 27 in 108 games played (73 starts) for the Earthquakes, his first MLS club. De Rosario has also scored at least 20 goals for the Houston Dynamo, Toronto FC and D.C. United. Best of the Best D.C. United is the only club in MLS to feature three active players who have won the MLS All-Star MVP award – Carlos Ruiz (2003), Dwayne De Rosario (2006), and Chris Pontius (2012). De Rosario Ties Twellman In the Black-and-Red’s last match against Toronto FC on 6/15, United captain Dwayne De Rosario converted from the spot and tallied his 102nd career goal, moving ahead of Taylor Twellman mark and becoming the MLS’ outright sixth all-time leading-scorer. Additionally, De Rosario is one game-winning goal away from tying Twellman (and Edson Buddle) for sixth all-time in the category.

Young League, Younger Talent On January 14, Homegrown player Michael Seaton, 17, became MLS’ first-ever signing to be born after the League’s inception in 1996. Multi-Goal Magicians D.C. United forward Carlos Ruiz is currently tied with Blackand-Red legend Jaime Moreno for the fourth most multi-goal games in MLS history (17). Ruiz would hold the fourth most multi-goal games (outright) if he scores two or more goals in this match. Additionally, Dwayne De Rosario is currently tied with Juan Pablo Angel for the eighth most multi-goal games and would move to seventh if he can find the net two or more times in this game. Ruiz Looking to Eclipse Lassiter United forward Carlos Ruiz is one goal away from being MLS’ ninth (outright) leading-scorer all time, currently tied for ninth with Roy Lassiter on the list with 88 goals. Ruiz is also fourth all-time in goals scored among active players, with teammate Dwayne De Rosario in second place in the category with 101 goals. 20/20 Vision With an assist in United’s 4/21 match vs. the Philadelphia Union, D.C. United midfielder Dwayne De Rosario became the sixth player in team history to notch 20 goals and 20 assists in a Black-and-Red jersey. Jaime Moreno, Christian Gomez, Marco Etcheverry, Ben Olsen and Santino Quaranta are the other five esteemed players in the 20/20 club. Young Ironman At just 21-years-old, United midfielder Perry Kitchen has already logged 6,800+ minutes for the Black-and-Red. In 2011, Kitchen became the only rookie in United’s 18-year history to lead the team in minutes played (2,726). In 2012, Kitchen appeared and started in 32 games. His 2,804 minutes played came in only one shy of tying the club’s previous single-season record for minutes (2,805).

Earthquakes Injury Report Out: Ty Harden (R – hip surgery), Mike Fucito (R – ankle sprain); Doubtful: None; Questionable: Steven Beitashour (R – quad contusion); Probable: Steven Lenhart (R – knee inflammation). Last Game Earthquakes 2, Colorado Rapids 1; June 15, 2013; Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin scored to lead the Earthquakes to a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids in interim head coach Mark Watson’s debut. The Earthquakes burst out of the gates to take the lead in the 11th minute. Justin Morrow sent a pass in the air that Alan Gordon nodded forward to his strike partner. Lenhart pulled the ball back and then fired between a pair of defenders from 23 yards out, beating Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the top shelf. The goal was Lenhart’s first of 2013. Cronin was next to the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. San Jose’s central midfield pairing teamed up to create the chance as Rafael Baca looped a perfectly weighted pass over Colorado’s defense to Cronin on the run. The 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star nominee slotted his shot past Irwin for his first career gamewinning goal. Colorado pulled one back in the 67th minute, but couldn’t find an equalizer. Brian Mullan sent a cross into the box and found Nathan Sturgis open at the top of the 6-yard box. Sturgis leapt and headed in his third goal of the season. San Jose held an advantage in possession for the night, including a 57-43 margin in the second half. The match was also Watson’s first as interim head coach, marking the sixth time an Earthquakes head coach has won his first game on the sidelines. San Jose’s head coaches are 6-1-0 all-time in their first game with the club.

San Jose Earthquakes vs. DC United, June 22, 2013 at 4 p.m. PT OPPONENT INFO Last Game vs. D.C. United Earthquakes 5, D.C. United 3; May 2, 2012; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart each had braces as the Earthquakes powered past D.C. United at home in a midweek match. After falling behind 1-0 on an early goal from Dwayne De Rosario, the Earthquakes exploded for three goals to close out the half. The first came from Lenhart in the 19th minute, a powerful blast from the top of the area to equalize. Next up was a clinical finish from Wondolowski after nifty passes from Simon Dawkins and Tressor Moreno to set the two-time MLS leading scorer up on the doorstep. Justin Morrow capped the first-half onslaught with his first career goal, one timing his shot past goalkeeper Joe Willis at the near post. Wondolowski and Lenhart each added goals in the second half to link their braces. The first was a whipped header from Wondolowski in the 69th minute thanks to a teasing ball sent just over the D.C. United defense by Steven Beitashour. Lenhart closed the Earthquakes’ account in the 74th minute, chesting home a rebound after Marvin Chavez hit the crossbar with a long-range effort. With his two goals on Wednesday, Wondolowski became the fastest player to 10 goals in MLS history in what was his ninth game of the season. The markers were Nos. 50 and 51 in his career. He also moved one ahead of New York Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry in the Budweiser Golden Boot standings. The match marked the first time San Jose scored five goals in a game since the club rejoined MLS in 2008 and set a new Buck Shaw Stadium record.
