SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs PHILADELPHIA UNION BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-BA; CSN-Phi)

July 9, 2011 (WEEK 17; MLS Game 170)

The San Jose Earthquakes return home to Buck Shaw Stadium take on Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening. The Quakes are on a four-game winless slide, after a 2-0 loss at midweek at Chivas USA. Union midfielder Amobi Okugo dribbled into the box and attempted a cross that appeared to hit San Jose defender Jason Hernandez in the hand, and after Geiger pointed to the spot, Sebastien Le Toux converted.  Union manager Peter Nowak made two changes to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC at PPL Park. Roger Torres and Danny Mwanga came into the side, for Stefani Miglioranzi and Kyle Nakazawa.  PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-1-2-3): Faryd Mondragon - Sheanon Williams, Danny Califf, Carlos Valdes, Jordan Harvey (sent off 41) - Amobi Okugo - Roger Torres (Michael Farfan 46), Keon Daniel - Sebastien Le Toux, Danny Mwanga (Stefani Miglioranzi 46), Carlos Ruiz (Kyle Nakazawa 83)  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Chris Leitch, Bobby Burling, Jason Hernandez, Justin Morrow - Chris Wondolowski, Brad Ring, Brandon McDonald (Sam Cronin 64), Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Ryan Johnson 72) - Steven Lenhart, Scott Sealy (Bobby Convey 58) SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes saw their winless run stretched to four games, falling 2-0 to Chivas USA on Wednesday evening at The Home Depot Center. The Quakes have 21 points from 16 games on the season, sitting in a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  Chivas USA finally took the lead in the 64th minute, when Justin Braun played the ball forward to Ben Zemanski, who fired a bending strike from 30 yards that swerved out of San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch's reach.  The hosts doubled their lead in the 84th minute. Second-half substitute midfielder Francisco Mendoza easily unlocked the Earthquakes defense with a through ball to a wide open Nick LaBrocca in the area, and the attack-minded midfielder coolly finished.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made three changes to the team that played to a 2-2 tie with the New York Red Bulls at Stanford Stadium. Chris Leitch came into central defense for the suspended Chris Leitch, and Joey Gjertsen andSam Cronin came into the midfield for Simon Dawkins and Khari Stephenson.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour (Tim Ward 46), Jason Hernandez, Chris Leitch, Ramiro Corrales - Joey Gjertsen (Simon Dawkins 46), Brad Ring, Sam Cronin (Omar Jasseh 77), Ryan Johnson - Steven Lenhart, Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS  The Earthquakes were shut out offensively for a third time in four games, that stretch coming a run of five games where they scored 13 goals.  “I think all of us collectively struggled tonight. Guys that played in the weekend, guys that had come in to the team, it was just one of those nights. It’s very frustrating to sit and watch because I felt if we could just put our game together a little bit, I felt we could get something out of the match,” Quakes head coach Frank Yallop said. “But we couldn’t. We couldn’t even string any passes together, other than a spell of 10 minutes at the start of the second half. But for a 90-minute game, it’s not enough.”  After starting in a wide midfield role in the New York game, Chris Wondolowski again moved into an out-andout striking position, paired with Steven Lenhart.  “To be honest, I think both offensively and defensively our whole team was on a different page from each other. We couldn’t connect any passes, and couldn’t defend well together as a team defensively. That’s never a good formula for success,” Wondolowski said. “Offensively I felt that we had opportunities to try to exploit them and be dangerous, but we couldn’t do that.”  Even when Yallop brought on Simon Dawkins to replace Joey Gjertsen, Dawkins played out wide while the starting strike pair remained intact.  “Of course it’s frustrating when you lose and you’re a forward and you don’t get many opportunities,” Wondolowski said. “We just need to connect the passes. There were too many passes going way out of bounds or to the other team. We need to try to do the little things a lot better: win our 50-50 passes, track runners and see if guys can defend as a team.”  Wondolowski was playing in his second match after returning from the U.S. team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He had scored four of his six goals on the season in the six games before missing four while on international duty.  “Mentally, I think I’m all right,” Wondolowski said. “It’s just getting back into it and trying to keep working hard and try to get chances and when I do get chances, [to] finish them. That’ll be a big key for me. It’s one of those things. All strikers go through it. Sometimes anything you hit goes in, sometimes no matter how well you hit it, it doesn’t go in.”  Tim Ward made his first appearance of the season, coming on at halftime for Steven Beitashour at right back.  “I’ve been out for such a long time. It was a little unexpected but you want to play as many games as you can, and play every time you’re available,” Ward said. “So to play the first time I was back in the team was a big positive for me.” PHILADELPHIA UNION Philadelphia Union against salvaged a result with late heroics, getting a late equalizing goal for a 2-2 draw with D.C. United on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. Union have 27 points from 17 matches on the year, leading the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  United took the lead a minute before halftime. A clever ball from Andy Najar found De Rosario on the left side of the box, and after drawing two Philly defenders he slid a square pass to Josh Wolff who stabbed the ball home.  But Union were even just four minutes into the season when Perry Kitchen's attempted clearance of a Veljko Paunovic cross clattered off his shin and past Bill Hamid into his own goal.  United took the lead back in the 58th minute through a tremendous individual effort from Najar, who was given time and space to hare forward before letting fly with a shot from 35 yards that sailed past a diving Faryd Mondragón.  But the visitors again got the goal back, this time with five minutes to play. Sheanon Williams drove a low cross into the area from the right corner and Carlos Ruiz re-directed it past Hamid for the leveler.  Union manager Peter Nowak made one change to the team that got a late goal for a 3-2 victory against Chivas USA at PPL Park. Danny Mwanga came into the side in place of Jack McInerney.  PHILADELPHIA UNION (4-1-3-2): Faryd Mondragon - Sheanon Williams, Carlos Valdes, Danny Califf, Jordan Harvey - Brian Carroll - Sebastien Le Toux, Veljko Paunovic (Gabriel Farfan 66), Justin Mapp (Jack McInerney 78) - Danny Mwanga (Keon Daniel 71), Carlos Ruiz. For a second consecutive game, Union got a goal in the last 10 minutes to secure points. Danny Mwanga’s goal in the 82nd minute gave Philadelphia a 3-2 win vs. Chivas USA the week before. “I think the important thing is that on a night like tonight when we did not play well, we still got the point. We came back and tied the game in a very good fashion,” said Union team manager Peter Nowak. “The boys are still fighting so this is a good sign and after half of the season right now it is good to be where we are right now.” Union have scored 15 goals in the second half, second-most in MLS, behind the Columbus Crew’s 16. But they’ve scored just six in the opening 45 minutes, ahead of only Toronto FC (4). “We see that games are very difficult and you’ve got to be prepared and I think in the first half we weren’t prepared. So, we were lucky, but I think it was important to get the point from here,” Nowak said. “The team is still behind us and it was the second game in a row where we came back and scored goals. The one point is one point, so we’re moving forward.” In his third game back in the Union lineup after missing four matches to Guatemala national team duty, Carlos Ruiz scored for a second consecutive game. “It was a great collective play. It was a great run from Sheanon Williams and a great pass from Sebastien Le Toux. I think those were the crosses I was looking for all game in front of the goal. … We tied the game [and] that is a good result at the end of the day for us,” Ruiz said. Union have come back to take points in four of the eight games when they’ve conceded the first goal (one win, three draws), holding the fourth-best record in the league. “I think overall [the game] was pretty back-and-forth,” said defender Danny Califf. “I think we definitely had some chances and [D.C. United] had some chances to put the game away and put ourselves out in front, but it feels good for us to go down twice and have the character to come back out and tie the game up. So, we feel good about that.”

Philadelphia Union vs. San Jose Earthquakes– Saturday, July 9, 2011 – 10:30 p.m. ET BACK WEST Philadelphia Union return to the west coast for the fourth time this season to take on the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday. Philadelphia will look to improve their 0-3-0 record on the west coast this season. San Jose have 21 points in 17 matches after a loss to Chivas USA on Wednesday. The Earthquakes drew New York 2-2 last Saturday and are 3-2-4 at home this season. Philadelphia are coming off a 2-2 draw at D.C. United on Saturday and are 2-4-2 on the road this year. The Union are 3-4-4 against the western conference this year.

LAST MLS MATCH Philadelphia maintained sole possession of first place in the eastern conference with a come-from-behind 2-2 draw at D.C. United on Saturday. For the second consecutive match, Philadelphia went down 1-0 at the break. In the 44th minute, Josh Wolff finished a cross from Dwayne De Rosario, appearing in his first match for D.C. after a trade from New York, five yards out to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Pressing forward in the opening minutes after halftime, Philadelphia found the equalizer on an own goal from rookie defender Perry Kitchen, who deflected a Veljko Paunovic cross behind ‘keeper Bill Hamid. United regained the advantage just eight minutes later. In the 57th, Andy Najar was given 20 yards of space in the midfield and he unleashed a knuckling laser from distance that beat Faryd Mondragon. The game remained 2-1 until the dying minutes when in the 84th, Philadelphia struck to gain the draw. Sebastien Le Toux found an overlapping Sheanon Williams on a run down the right wing. The defender pushed a cross to the top of the six yard box to a cutting Ruiz, who finished with the outside of his left foot to knot the match at 2-2. The goal was Ruiz’s fifth of the season, tying him for the team lead with Danny Mwanga.

LAST MATCH vs. SAN JOSE The last meeting between Philadelphia Union and the San Jose Earthquakes ended in a 1-0 victory for the Union in front of 18,279 fans at PPL Park on a sunny April afternoon. Philadelphia managed to earn a very hard-fought victory in this match, playing with only 10 men for the final 49 minutes after defender Jordan Harvey was shown a red card late in the first half. The two teams spent the majority of the early going feeling one another out and looking for any sign of defensive weakness. A flurry of action occurred in the middle stages of the first half, as San Jose created a very good chance in the 31st minute when Chris Wondolowski was denied at the edge of the six-yard box by Faryd Mondragon. Just a few minutes later, in the 39th, Carlos Ruiz had a good look at goal from close range but it was blocked at the last second by the San Jose defense. Things looked troubling for the Union when Harvey was awarded a red card for a 41st-minute challenge on Chris Leitch. This was the fourth card handed out during what was a very physical first half. Despite playing with ten men for the majority of the match, Philadelphia were able to score the game’s first and only goal in the 76th minute. Amobi Okugo drew a handball from Jason Hernandez in the 75th minute when his cross to Le Toux was intercepted in the penalty area. The Frenchman stepped up to the penalty spot in the 76th minute and buried the winner. Since joining the Union, the UCLA grad has started all but one of 46 league matches, logging a total of 3,861 minutes. He scored his first professional goal with the Union in a match against Toronto on April 15, 2010. The trade leaves just two players from the 2009 Expansion Draft on the Union roster – Stefani Miglioranzi and Sebastien Le Toux.

San Jose will play seven League matches in the month of July, a mark only equaled by Colorado Rapids. The club’s lone non-MLS match in July is a friendly against West Bromwich Albion on July 12. The Union, on the other hand, will have played four League matches and two international friendlies when the month has come to a close.

HARD TO WIN OUT WEST Teams east of the Mississippi River have combined for only one win when playing in the Pacific Time Zone this season. Toronto, New England, New York, Philadelphia, D.C. United, Columbus, and Chicago are a combined 2-13-11 when playing at Los Angeles, Chivas USA, San Jose, Portland, and Vancouver. The two victories were a May 29th win for D.C. United at Portland by a final score of 3-2 and a July 6th Columbus win 1-0 at Vancouver.

LACKING LENHART San Jose forward Steven Lenhart will be ineligible for Saturday’s match due to accumulation of yellows. Lenhart played all 90 minutes against Philadelphia in the team’s first meeting this year and scored twice against Philadelphia as a member of the Columbus Crew a year ago.

MR. CLUTCH Danny Mwanga has four goals to tie the game or take the lead after the 80th minute in his MLS career. That is more than former stars Roy Lassiter, Ronald Cerritos, or Diego Serna had in their respective MLS careers. All of Mwanga’s goals this season have come in the second half as have 10 of his 12 career goals.

YOUNG SCORING REVOLUTION THANKS FOR THE ASSISTANCE Philadelphia Union and the San Jose Earthquakes have been very efficient with their goals and assists totals in 2011. San Jose’s 22 goals are perfectly matched with 22 assists for an average of one assist per goal. Philadelphia is not far off this mark, having contributed 16 helpers on 22 goals, for an average of 0.73 assists per goal.

The Union continue to prove the importance of raising young talents, as five of their youngsters have scored their first professional goal this season. Keon Daniel, Michael Farfan, Gabriel Farfan, Roger Torres and Kyle Nakazawa have found the end of the net this year, while Danny Mwanga is tied for the Union scoring lead with five tallies.

WELCOME TO STANFORD

PHILLY FAMILIAR

San Jose hosted the New York Red Bulls at Stanford Stadium on July 2, welcoming in 41,028 fans, the largest crowd to witness a non-doubleheader Earthquakes match in franchise history. The match was the first time the ‘Quakes had played at Stanford Stadium since being reborn as an expansion team in 2008. They last played in the stadium as a doubleheader with the Women’s World Cup on July 14, 1999, a match in which they defeated D.C. United in a shootout by a 3-2 mark.

San Jose midfielder Bobby Convey attended William Penn Charter High School in Philadelphia from 1998-2000. He played on the varsity soccer team as an eighth-grader, freshman, and sophomore earning Philadelphia High School Player of the Year in 1998 as a freshman and Parade Magazine All-American honors the following year.

SCORE FIRST The Union are undefeated in 2011 when opening the scoring in a match. Philadelphia has scored first in eight contests this season, posting a record of 6-0-2 in those games.

Philadelphia Union vs. San Jose Earthquakes– Saturday, July 9, 2011 – 10:30 p.m. ET HOMECOMING FOR OKUGO Saturday’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes provides a homecoming of sorts for Philadelphia Union’s Amobi Okugo. The midfielder was born in Hayward, California, less than 50 miles from Santa Clara, where the Earthquakes play their home matches. Okugo will have friends and family in attendance at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

ALUMNI MATCH Philadelphia midfielder Brian Carroll and a trio of Earthquakes – Sam Cronin, Ike Opara, and Scott Sealy – are former Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Carroll and Sealy played together from 2001-2002. Cronin graduated in 2009 while Opara played from 2007-2009. Union midfielder Michael Farfan, defender Sheanon Williams, and San Jose defender Chris Leitch all played for North Carolina though their times in Chapel Hill never overlapped. Leitch was a Tar Heel from 1998-2001. Williams played in 2008 while Farfan competed in 2009-2010.

RESERVE RESULT Philadelphia Union Reserves dropped their last match at D.C. United on July 3, losing by a final score of 4-1. Facing a two-goal deficit early in the second half, Union U17 forward Darius Madison scored in the 48th minute to pull his side within one goal of the hosts. Roger Torres provided the assist on the score, playing a nice through ball to his teammate. United answered right back, however, and scored two more goals to put the match out of reach. The Union Reserves will next be in action on July 18 when they play at the New England Revolution.

ALL-STAR UPDATE From June 17 to 20, fans utilized Twitter as a writein ballot for the MLS All-Star Game. All players were eligible, and four of the top five vote-getters on Twitter are Philadelphia Union players – three defenders plus goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón. Carlos Valdés and Sheanon Williams were first and second in twitter voting, while Jordan Harvey (fourth) and Mondragón) rounded out the top five. D.C. United’s Charlie Davies was third. Overall, Mondragón has the fourth most votes among goalkeepers, defender Danny Califf is fifth among defenders, and Justin Mapp has received the second-most text-votes. Kasey Keller, Rafa Marquez, David Beckham, and Landon Donovan are the top vote-getters at their respective positions through June 27.

STEADY AS THEY GO Two outfield players have played every single minute of the Union’s 2011 season: Carlos Valdes and Sebastien Le Toux. Valdes is an integral part of a defense that allows only 0.94 goals per match while Le Toux has fired a team-high 38 shots this season.

QUAKES QUAINTANCES San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch and Philadelphia midfielder Justin Mapp played together on the Chicago Fire from 2007-2009. Current San Jose midfielder Tim Ward also played briefly with Busch and Mapp in Chicago from May 2009 to August 2010. Additionally, Philadelphia midfielder Brian Carroll and San Jose forward Steve Lenhart played for the Columbus Crew together from 2008-2010, capturing the MLS Cup in 2008. Several players on the Philadelphia and San Jose rosters will play against their fellow countrymen when the two teams take the pitch on Saturday. Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Thorne Holder and midfielder Keon Daniel and San Jose midfielder Scott Sealy call Trinidad & Tobago home. Both Daniel and Sealy have made appearances for the Men’s National Team. Philadelphia Midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi and San Jose counterpart Andre Luiz both hail from Brazil.
