MLS GAME INFORMATION
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes won a top-of-the-table meeting with Real Salt Lake in impressive fashion, rolling to a 5-0 victory Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes lead the Western Conference with 40 points from 20 games. LAST MATCH Wondolowski opened the scoring in the 18th minute. A corner kick was nodded down by Alan Gordon and skipped across the face of goal, where Wondolowski snuck in to polish off Justin Morrow’s back-post pass with a diving header. The Quakes doubled their margin in the 63rd minute when Gordon added a tap-in from Victor Bernardez’s post-rattling header. In the 72nd minute, Wondolowski tallied again by converting with a near-post touch after Shea Salinas broke in down the right wing drove in a low cross. Simon Dawkins cashed in from short range off a 79th-minute corner kick to make the score 4-0, and Wondolowski completed his hat trick a minute later after Khari Stephenson unlocked RSL’s defense with a simple through pass. Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that played to a scoreless draw with FC Dallas in Frisco. Shea Salinas came into the midfield for the suspended Ramiro Corrales. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Marvin Chavez (Simon Dawkins 69), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Shea Salinas - Alan Gordon (Khari Stephenson 77), Chris Wondolowski (Sercan Guvenisik 81). TEAM NEWS With the victory, the Earthquakes lead MLS with 12 wins and 40 points, surpassing their 2011 season point total. “I felt it was a strong performance from the guys,” said San Jose head coach Frank Yallop. “I felt good coming into the game. There was just a sense of confidence in the team and in the locker room before the game and it carried out to the pitch. There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to win the game.” The Quakes have scored five goals on two separate occasions this season, also hitting for five in a 5-3 win May 2 vs. D.C. United. San Jose leads MLS with 41 goals scored through the first 19 weeks this season. Chris Wondolowski scored his third career hat trick in the win. He now has 17 goals this season – one more than he scored last year, when he tied for the league goalscoring lead. “He has played really well up top all season. He’s been in really good form and you saw that again tonight,” said Yallop. “He missed an opportunity in the first half, but was able to stay focused and buried two goals for his 17th and 18th of the season. All in all, it was a very good performance for him and I think it will help him through the remainder of the season.” Wondolowski has been credited with eight game-winning goals this season, one shy of the MLS record for a single season, which he set in 2010, along with former LA Galaxy striker Carlos Ruiz (2002). “If you look at the tape of this match, you will see that all I had to do was finish and that is a credit to my teammates,” Wondolowski said. “All year long they have put me, Alan (Gordon) and Steven (Lenhart) in prime positions to score. Hopefully we can carry some of the offensive momentum into our next match on this short week.” Shea Salinas made his second start in the last three games, his first two since he was sidelined in mid-April, and he recorded a pair of assists, his third career two-assist game. “Our midfielders had a great game tonight. Sam Cronin, (Rafael) Baca, Marvin Chavez and Shea (Salinas) played world-class stuff tonight. They made it easy for me. They found the space and did a good job of putting me in a position where all I had to do was finish,” said Wondolowski. It was a second consecutive defensive shutout for the Quakes – after going 14 games, since March 31, without one. “We are starting to hit our stride. We had to rotate our back line due to injuries, but now that we are healthy, we are finding some cohesiveness and it’s starting to show,” said center back Jason Hernandez. “I liked our performance in Dallas and I liked this one even better.” FC DALLAS FC Dallas put an end to their 13-game winless streak, coming back for a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. FCD is in a tie for ninth place in the Western Conference with 19 points from 20 matches. LAST MATCH The Rapids took the lead five minutes into the second half. Conor Casey found an unmarked Omar Cummings in all kinds of space down the right side, and he fired home from the angle, beating Kevin Hartman to the near post.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
But FCD leveled the score at 1-1 10 minutes later. Cleaning up a cleared corner, Fabian Castillo’s speed created room for his cross into the box, which found the substitute Carlos Rodriguez at the back post. The winner came nine minutes from the end. A perfect ball from David Ferreira found Rodriguez on the right flank, but his cut-back was headed off the line by a retreating Drew Moor. But Castillo was there to smash home the rebound. FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made three changes to the team that reached a scoreless result with the San Jose Earthquakes in Frisco. Jair Benitez came into the back four for Carlos Rodriguez, and Ricardo Villar and Daniel Hernandez came into the midfield for James Marcelin and the traded Andrew Wiedeman. FC DALLAS (4-4-1-1): Kevin Hartman - Zach Loyd, Hernan Pertuz, Matt Hedges, Jair Benitez - Ricardo Villar (Carlos Rodriguez 57), Daniel Hernandez, Andrew Jacobson (James Marcelin 73), Brek Shea (Scott Sealy 82) - David Ferreira - Fabian Castillo. TEAM NEWS FC Dallas put an end to their 13-game winless streak, their first victory since April 14. It was tied for the fourthlongest winless run in MLS history. “We try to really keep the pressure off these guys. We’ve been going without six or seven starters. The result is the result,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “The thing I’ve said to these guys is we’ve fought in every game. In every game we fight and we just don’t find the way to get the win, or we beat ourselves or we get fatigued.” It was also FCD’s first road victory since last Oct. 12, a nine-game streak with an away win. “It has been disappointing to put together a winless streak as long as it was. It’s always great to enjoy and celebrate victories and there hasn’t been a lot of rewarding ourselves lately, so to have gotten a win in a very difficult environment tonight, it means a lot to us,” said goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. “Hopefully it will give us some confidence going into San Jose, and maybe we can put together a stretch of wins that will put us back in the hunt.” Fabian Castillo recorded a goal and an assist for the second time in his MLS career, the first since last May 14 when he did it vs. Philadelphia. “I thought [Castillo] was really very much engaged throughout the game and I think a big part of that might have been external,” Hyndman said. “When we brought him into the team, he stayed with Oscar for three or four weeks. So he has that relationship with [Colorado coach] Oscar [Pareja] and I think he wanted to do well to show Oscar it was a good decision to bring him here.” Castillo started the game as the lone striker, with Brek Shea back to his wide midfield role. But the two changed after the opening quarter hour. “We were really back on our heels. The thing that changed was moving Brek into a striker position and moving Fabian onto the flank,” said Hyndman. “Brek was really unable to keep the balls over there with Hunter [Freeman] and he became a handful for the two center backs. That started opening it up for us. We were doing a little bit better, being a little bit more dangerous and Castillo did a good job tracking back and working.” While he did not record an assist, David Ferreira played an integral part in the winning goal that snapped FCD’s 13-game winless run in their 2-1 win at Colorado. It was his second start after returning from a broken leg that sidelines him for 15 months. “Right now you see David Ferreira coming back. This is his third game in a row. He’s the one that’s making the passes. He’s the one that’s getting others to work harder,” said Hyndman. Ricardo Villar also made his first start since the fifth game of the season, April 5 vs. New England. He had come off the bench the week before against San Jose. “It doesn’t seem like we’ve gotten very many breaks in terms of injuries. Someone will get healthy, and then someone will go down. We’ve got a few guys with concussion symptoms,” said Hartman. “It comes down to we fight and we work, and we try our best to get victories and points. Unfortunately when you’re missing the amount of talent that we are missing from injuries, it becomes more difficult to compete. Some guys have stepped in and done admirably.”

Earthquakes’ Last Game Earthquakes 0, FC Dallas 0; July 7, 2012; FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, TX. Chris Wondolowski netted his third career hat trick as the San Jose Earthquakes routed Real Salt Lake 5-0 in a battle between the top two teams in the Western Conference at Buck Shaw Stadium. Wondolowski kicked off the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing at the near post after Justin Morrow redirected an Alan Gordon header. The Danville native found the net again in the 72nd minute with a deft touch on a Shea Salinas cross to push San Jose’s lead to 3-0. He capped the hat trick in the 80th minute, finishing a through-ball from Khari Stephenson for his MLS-leading 17th goal of the season. Goals from Alan Gordon and Simon Dawkins sandwiched around Wondolowski’s second goal completed the scoring for the Quakes. Gordon doubled San Jose’s lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute, tapping in a Victor Bernardez header that had ricocheted off the far post. Then, in the 79th minute, Wondolowski got a touch on a Marvin Chavez corner kick, sending the ball to Dawkins who turned and fired past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Earthquakes’ Last Game Against FC Dallas Earthquakes 0, FC Dallas 0; July 7, 2012; FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, TX. San Jose could not find a winning goal against FC Dallas despite coming close on several occasions. 2010 MLS MVP David Ferreira returned to the FC Dallas starting lineup for the first time in 14 months, and while Ferreira helped Dallas enjoy the majority of possession in the first half, Dallas could not snap a 13-game winless streak. San Jose nearly scored by way of Chris Wondolowski in the 36th minute, except FC Dallas defender Hernan Pertuz cleared the ball off of the goal line following Wondolowski’s chip over onrushing Dallas keeper Kevin Hartman. Despite going down a man after Ramiro Corrales picked up his second yellow card in the 80th minute, Wondolowski twice came close in the dying minutes except a big save by Hartman and a vital block by Matt Hedges preserved the draw for Dallas.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Wondolowski, Beitashour, Corrales Selected to MLS AT&T All-Star Gameday Roster San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski and defenders Steven Beitashour and Ramiro Corrales will face European Champion Chelsea in the 2012 MLS AT&T All-Star Game on July 25 at PPL Park (5:30 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TeleFutura) after the trio were named to the gameday roster by coach Ben Olsen on Sunday. San Jose and Sporting Kansas City were the lone teams to place three on the squad. The last time the Earthquakes had three or more players selected to the MLS All-Star game was in 2004 when Jeff Agoos, Brian Ching, Landon Donovan, Richard Mulrooney and Pat Onstad made the list. Wondolowski’s Scoring in Perspective - Wondolowski leads MLS with 17 goals this season. With 14 games still to play, that goal total would have earned Wondolowski at least a share of the league lead in six of the past nine seasons. - Over the past 34 games (the current length of an MLS season), Wondolowski has scored 27 goals -- which would match the all-time MLS single-season goalscoring record, set by Roy Lassiter of the Tampa Bay Mutiny in 1996. - Wondolowski has scored 23 goals in his last 23 regular-season games, dating back to Sept. 24, 2011. Only one other MLS player born in the United States ever averaged at least one goal per game over a span of 20 matches: Roy Lassiter, who went 26-for-26 from May 1996 to April 1997. - Stern John, in 1998, scored 26 goals in 27 games for an average of 0.96 goals per game -- the best in MLS history for a leading goalscorer. This season, Wondolowski has 17 goals in 18 games, an average of 0.94 per game. - Since the start of the 2010 season, Wondolowski has scored 51 goals -- by far the most of any player in MLS. Next is D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario, with 36.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. FC Dallas, July 18, 2012, 8 p.m. PT - No player in league history has led MLS in goalscoring for three consecutive years. Wondolowski (2010 and 2011) and Carlos Ruiz (2002 and 2003) are the only players in league history to have scored the most goals in back-to-back seasons. - Just two players have hit for 20 goals in league play over the past decade -- Luciano Emilio (DC) in 2007, and Landon Donovan (LA) in 2008, both Golden Boot winners. The last previous players with 20+ goals were Carlos Ruiz (LA) with 24 and Taylor Twellman (NE) with 23, in 2002. Wondolowski Named MLS Player of the Week Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 19, his second time winning the honor in 2012. Wondolowski recorded a hat trick— the third of his MLS career — and added an assist in the Earthquakes’ 5-0 defeat of Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Earthquakes Remain Undefeated at Buck Shaw Stadium The Earthquakes are 5-0-2 at Buck Shaw Stadium this season and 6-1-2 when playing in the Bay Area. The Earthquakes played their first match at Buck Shaw Stadium since May 19 on Saturday against Real Salt Lake, winning 5-0 thanks in large part to a hat trick by Chris Wondolowski. San Jose has also played MLS matches at AT&T Park (1-0 loss vs. Houston on March 17) and Stanford Stadium (43 win vs. LA Galaxy on June 30). Prolific Scoring Saturday’s 5-0 win against Real Salt Lake marked the first time in club history that the Earthquakes have scored five goals in a single game twice in the same season. The first came on May 2 in a 5-3 win against D.C. United. San Jose has scored 41 goals this season, 14 shy of the club record set in 1997 with 14 games remaining. Hat Trick Hero Chris Wondolowski netted his third career hat trick in Saturday’s 5-0 win against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. His previous two came toward the end of San Jose’s 2010 campaign, on Sept. 25 in a 3-2 win at Toronto FC and Oct. 20 in a 3-0 win against Chivas USA. Wondolowski’s hat trick was his fourth multi-goal game of the season and ninth of his career. Wondolowski Approaching MLS Single Season Record for Game-Winning Goals Chris Wondolowski is one game-winning goal away from tying an MLS record that he shared with former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz. Wondolowski (2010) and Ruiz (2002) have each recorded nine game-winning goals in a single season. San Jose’s striker has scored the game winner in eight of San Jose’s 12 victories to date. The Earthquakes have 14 games remaining for Wondolowski to try and match the record. Wondolowski Closing in on Club Scoring Mark Chris Wondolowski is seven goals away from matching Ronald Cerritos’ club record for career goals scored. Cerritos scored 61 goals in 148 games over six seasons in San Jose. Meanwhile, Wondolowski has 54 goals in 92 games over five seasons for the Earthquakes. Quakes First in the Western Conference, Supporters’ Shield Standings The Earthquakes (12-4-4, 40 pts.) solidified their spot atop the Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings with a 5-0 win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday. San Jose is four points clear of Real Salt Lake (11-7-3, 36 pts.) with a game in hand for the Western Conference lead. Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City (11-5-3, 36 pts.) has a game in hand on the Earthquakes in the Supporters’ Shield standings. Busch, Earthquakes Defense Record Second Consecutive Shutout Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch recorded his fifth shutout of the season and second in a row in San Jose’s 5-0 win against Real Salt Lake on Saturday. The back-to-back clean sheet count was San Jose’s second of the season after blanking Toronto FC 3-0 and Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 in consecutive games to close out March. Busch is No. 6 all-time in MLS history with 65 career shutouts during his 12 seasons in the league. Quakes Among MLS Category Leaders Through 20 games, the Earthquakes are No. 1 in MLS with 41 goals scored and 44 assists. With 24 scores conceded, the Quakes are also No. 1 in the league with a +17 goal differential. Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot Chris Wondolowski is well clear of the chase pack after netting his third career hat trick in the Earthquakes’ 5-0 rout of Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Buck Shaw stadium. The Danville native has 17 goals, six more than his closest pursuer, New York’s Kenny Cooper. Quakes Surpass Points Total from 2011 Season The Earthquakes surpassed their 2011 season point total with Saturday’s 5-0 rout of Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. The win pushed San Jose to 40 points in 2012, two more than their haul one year ago. The club already surpassed their 2011 win total with a 2-1 result against the Colorado Rapids on June 20 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Rope-a-Dope The Quakes have a penchant for late-game heroics this season. The club is a league-best 4-3-3 when conceding first. Additionally, San Jose has scored five game winners – four in stoppage time – to go along with three equalizers in the 82nd minute or later.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. FC Dallas, July 18, 2012, 8 p.m. PT Late Goals in Bunches San Jose paces the league in goals over the final 30 minutes with 26. That total is 11 more than the next-best team, D.C. United. The Quakes also lead MLS comfortably with an incredible 15 strikes over the final 15 minutes of contests. Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids are next on the list with nine. The franchise record for such goals is 16 from the 1998 campaign. San Jose also has six goals in 2012 in the 90th minute or later. Yallop No. 5 on MLS Wins List Eighth-year Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop is tied for No. 5 on the MLS regular-season coaching wins chart at 107. He became just the sixth manager in MLS history to reach the 100-win milestone with a 3-1 home victory over Real Salt Lake on April 21. He ranks behind Sigi Schmid (165), Bruce Arena (136), Bob Bradley (124) and Steve Nicol (112) and is even with former pupil Dominic Kinnear (107). Quakes Linking Up Through June 20, San Jose leads MLS in team assists with 44. Marvin Chavez leads the club and is tied for No. 2 in MLS with eight assists following his pair against the LA Galaxy on June 30. Steven Beitashour is next with six assists; the right back led San Jose with seven a year ago. Hernandez Moving Up Club Record Book Earthquakes center back Jason Hernandez is now No. 8 in both starts (113) and minutes played (10,057) in club history. He is also tied for No. 9 on the club’s all-time appearance list with 115. Hernandez made his 100th career start in San Jose against Real Salt Lake in front of a home crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on April 21, Busch Among MLS Career Leaders With a current mark of .747, Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch is second on Major League Soccer’s all-time chart in career saves percentage. He trails only Brad Friedel, currently of Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, who produced a mark of .756 over 38 games with the Columbus Crew in 1996-97. Busch picked up the 64th clean sheet of his 12-year MLS career on March 31 at Seattle Sounders FC, moving him into sole possession of seventh among the all-time leaders. Busch has posted 18 shutouts in his three seasons as the starter in San Jose, to go along with his 21 during three seasons (2007-09) with the Chicago Fire, and 25 in five seasons (2002-06) with the Columbus Crew. Busch is also No. 8 all-time in saves in MLS history with 840 over his career. Corrales in Exclusive 200-Start Club Veteran defender and team captain Ramiro Corrales made the 200th start of his San Jose career against the Houston Dynamo on March 17. He thus became the 19th player in league history to draw 200 starts for one club. Defender Frankie Hejduk (LA Galaxy) and goalkeeper Zack Thornton (Chivas USA) made a handful of appearances in 2011. Hejduk officially announced his retirement and joined the Columbus Crew front office on April 19. Corrales was the youngest to play in MLS in 1996 as a 19-year-old. FC DALLAS LOANS MOISES HERNANDEZ TO COMUNICACIONES FC FC Dallas Homegrown defender Moises Hernandez joined Guatemalan side Comunicaciones FC on June 20 for a loan period through the remainder of 2012. ‐ ‐ “We thought this was a good opportunity for a young player to get the games he needs to continue his development,” said Schellas Hyndman. “We have 10 Reserve League games in a year, which is great, but an option like this gives Moises the chance to really speed up the growth process.” 36 POINTS IN 28 DAYS From July 14 to Aug. 11, FC Dallas has the potential to make up 36 points in the Western Conference standings.
