Their last home win vs. Chicago had come in 2005. The Fire haven’t defeated San Jose at home since 2009. The Quakes won at Toyota Park in 2010; the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Bridgeview last year. The teams of course played in MLS Cup 2003, the Quakes winning 4-2 at The Home Depot Center. Coaches record: Frank Klopas vs. SJ: P0 W0 L1 D0 … Frank Yallop vs. CHI: P18 W4 L7 D7 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes saw their two-game winning run come to an end, dropping a 2-1 decision to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday evening at BC Place. The Quakes lead the Western Conference with 43 points from 22 games. LAST MATCH Whitecaps FC opened the scoring after 20 minutes. Lee Young-Pyo hit a well-weighted through ball into the right side of the box, setting up Dane Richards to cut in and blast a ball past a sprawling Jon Busch. But the visitors were level seven minutes before the half. Alan Gordon got loose on the back post to head home a cross from Marvin Chavez, looping it over Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon. The winner came in the 61st minute, after Camilo went down under a rash Sam Cronin slide-tackle at the left corner of the six-yard box. After some discussion, Barry Robson stepped up to take the penalty and hammered a rising drive into the upper left corner of the goal. Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that held on for a 2-1 win against FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium. Simon Dawkins came into the team in place of Shea Salinas. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Marvin Chavez (Shea Salinas 64), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca (Sercan Guvenisik 82), Simon Dawkins - Alan Gordon, Chris Wondolowski. TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes have now gone three games winless on the road, with two losses and a draw since a twomatch winning trip to Colorado and Salt Lake.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“It’s not easy playing on the road. We played against a good team tonight and they’re good at home. Anytime you go on the road and get a point, it’s good, and if you get a win, it’s great,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “I thought we could’ve got something out of this game.” “I think if you look at where we’ve played and who we have played we have battled; just a couple things haven’t gone our way,” said Chris Wondolowski. “We’re not getting blown out, we’re playing well – I mean were doing fine. Our road record has spoken for itself so I think were fine.” Alan Gordon has scored goals in three consecutive games, and with nine goals for the season has more than he scored in the 2010 and 2011 seasons combined. Chris Wondolowski has not scored in back-to-back games – he has not gone more than two consecutive games without a goal since August 2011. “We had chances after that to score but it was a bit of a game changer so I’m a bit disappointed that we didn’t at least get a point,” said Yallop. “Probably from the 60th minute to the 75th – we looked weary and didn’t have our legs, but we at least had the ball in their end a lot afterwards. I liked that we kept going and had chances at the end.” Marvin Chavez set up the Gordon goal with his ninth assist of the season, pulling him into a tie for second in MLS, along with LA’s David Beckham, one behind Dwayne De Rosario of D.C. United. Simon Dawkins returned to the Quakes starting lineup for the first time since June 23. He had missed three games before coming on as a substitute in back-to-back contests. “It’s tough to try to get up every game when you have three games in a week, we’re trying to get guys healthy and every game we’re in is pretty much a battle,”said goalkeeper Jon Busch. “We’re not cruising through games, so guys have to battle for 90 minutes. And it wears you down after a while. So it’ll be good to get back to one game every week.”
CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire return to action after a weekend off, their last match a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls on July 18 at Red Bull Arena. The Fire are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points from 19 games. LAST MATCH The game's lone goal was a stunner on 71 minutes. Sebastien Le Toux hit a diagonal aerial ball to a streaking Thierry Henry, who chested the ball down before hitting a left-footed volley that flew over outstretched goalkeeper Sean Johnson, stung off the far post and crossed the goal line. Fire head coach Frank Klopas made two changes to the team that defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 at Toyota Park. Dan Gargan came into the back four for the suspended Arne Friedrich, and Marco Pappa replaced Patrick Nyarko in midfield. CHICAGO FIRE (4-2-3-1): Sean Johnson - Dan Gargan, Austin Berry, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares - Pavel Pardo, Logan Pause (Orr Barouch 75) - Chris Rolfe, Alex (Patrick Nyarko 46), Marco Pappa - Dominic Oduro (Rafael Robayo 61). TEAM NEWS The Fire were shut out for a third time in the last four league games. “I think our ability to be good in possession with the ball, I think we didn’t do a good enough job of that in the first half,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “We gave a lot of balls away, and there wasn’t really a lot of movement. They were better in the first half with that, and obviously in the second half they did have a couple chances and Henry made the difference.” The Fire had just one shot on goal for the match, matching their season-low which occurred three matches earlier in the scoreless draw in Houston. “The heat was really affecting [the team],” Fire forward Dominic Oduro said. “We tried to play as a team but obviously you can’t just run 100 percent all day, so we were trying to stick with the game plan: to keep the ball and hopefully get one or two chances. But it was just unfortunate we couldn’t just come up with the offensive plays we wanted to.” Said Klopas: “You’re playing away, being compact getting behind the ball and being good in possession, all that stuff is essential. And playing very direct; we’re trying to not get stretched and it’s and up and down game because it’s very difficult to sustain that rhythm.” The Fire announced the acquisition of striker Sherjill McDonald. Last with Belgian Pro League side Beerschot AC, who he joined in 2009 and tallied 15 goals in 82 matches through the 2012 campaign, McDonald tallied 47 goals in 217 appearances over the course of his 10-year career in Belgium, the Netherlands and England. “Sherjill is a goal scorer who can hold the ball up, attack with pace and is very technically sound,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “He has competed at a high level in Europe and will bolster our attack as we make a push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs.” The Fire loaned striker Federico Puppo to Defensor Sporting Club in Uruguay for the remainder of the season. On their weekend off, the Fire played host to Aston Villa FC of the English Premier League, falling 1-0. The game’s lone goal came on a 29th-minute header from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Earthquakes’ Last Game Earthquakes 1, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2; July 2, 2012; BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, British Columbia. The San Jose Earthquakes were unable to capture their first ever win at BC Place Stadium as they dropped a 2-1 result against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Vancouver jumped out to an early lead in the 20th minute when newly acquired midfielder Dane Richards slipped his mark and powered home a shot to the far post. Jon Busch managed to get a hand on it, but was unable to prevent the Jamaican international from scoring his first goal as a Whitecap. However, the lead was short-lived as San Jose drew even in the 38th minute by way of an Alan Gordon header. Jason Hernandez cut out a Whitecaps pass and the midfield who dished it out to Marvin Chavez who picked out Gordon who headed home from six yards out. Gordon’s goal marks a three-game goal scoring streak and put Chavez just one assist back of the MLS lead with 9 on the season so far. Vancouver came out firing after the break and Richards nearly scored his second in the 57th minute. Vancouver found the winner in the 63rd minute after Barry Robson converted a penalty kick after Camilo Sanvezzo was taken down in the box. San Jose was unable to salvage a point despite creating several opportunities late, and has now gone three away games without a win. Earthquakes’ Last Game Against Chicago Fire Earthquakes 2, Chicago Fire 0; Sept. 10, 2011; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, Calif. The Earthquakes picked up three points to remain in the thick of the MLS Cup Playoff race, defeating the Chicago Fire 2-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium thanks to goals by Chris Wondolowski and Ramiro Corrales. The win snapped San Jose’s 13-game winless streak and moved them within five points of the final playoff spot. Wondolowski got on the board in the 10th minute, volleying home a perfect pass over the Fire back line by rookie midfielder Rafael Baca. The goal was Wondolowski’s 10th of 2011 and the 31st of his career with the Earthquakes, moving the Danville native to within one of Landon Donovan for No. 2 on the club’s all-time scoring list. Corrales doubled San Jose’s lead in the 69th minute, tapping home a shot from inside the area after Wondolowski sprung the veteran defender with a pass near the top of the box.

Morrow was a late addition to the squad as Olsen added the third-year left-back on July 19 following an injury to New York Red Bulls defender Heath Pearce. The last time the Earthquakes had three or more players selected to the MLS All-Star game was in 2004 when Jeff Agoos, Brian Ching, Landon Donovan, Richard Mulrooney and Pat Onstad made the list. Quakes First in the Western Conference, Supporters’ Shield Standings The Earthquakes (13-5-4, 43 pts.) retained their spot atop the Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings despite dropping a 2-1 match to Vancouver Whitecaps FC last weekend. San Jose is four points clear of Real Salt Lake (12-7-3, 39 pts.) for the Western Conference lead. RSL also currently holds second-place in the Supporters’ Shield, with the New York Red Bulls (11-5-5, 36 pts) sitting a point back of RSL and five back of the Quakes. San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chicago Fire, July 28, 2012, 7:30 p.m. PT Chavez Opens Scoring Account Marvin Chavez scored his first goal with the Earthquakes’ in 2-1 win against FC Dallas on July 18. Chavez volleyed home a Shea Salinas cross in the 12th minute, striking against the team that traded the Honduran winger to San Jose on Dec. 16, 2011 in exchange for allocation money. Gordon Stays Hot Quakes forward Alan Gordon continued his torrid form of late with the Quakes lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday at BC Place. Gordon scored for the third straight game, his second three-game goal scoring streak of the season. He netted a goal against Real Salt Lake on July 14, before scoring the game-winner vs. FC Dallas on July 18. Earlier this season he scored in three straight against Chivas USA on May 13, Columbus Crew on May 19 and LA Galaxy on May 23. He now has a career high nine goals in 2012. Gordon is also tied for sixth in MLS in goals scored. Iron Men Quakes all-star defenders Steve Beitashour and Justin Morrow have now appeared in all 22 games for San Jose this season, following their 90-minute performances against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday. They are both tied for the league lead in games played, while Morrow leads MLS with 1,980 minutes played. Beitashour ranks third in minutes played at 1,965. Chavez the Distributor Quakes midfielder Marvin Chavez moved into a tie for second on the MLS assist leader board with nine after Alan Gordon connected on the Honduran’s cross on Sunday against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Chavez and the LA Galaxy’s David Beckham sit one back of reigning Budweiser Golden Boot winner and former-Quake Dwayne de Rosario. Chavez, in his debut season in San Jose, had six career assists entering 2012 following three seasons with FC Dallas. Winning Ways With last Wednesday’s 2-1 win against FC Dallas, the Earthquakes matched their highest win total since returning to MLS in 2008. San Jose finished 2010 with a 13-10-7 mark to earn a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs. At 13-5-4, the Earthquakes are off to their best start in club history. Single Season Goals Record The Earthquakes lead MLS with 44 goals scored in 2012. The team has scored more goals this year than any season since returning to MLS in 2008. The all-time club record for goals scored in a season is 55, set in 1997. Hat Trick Hero Chris Wondolowski netted his third career hat trick on July 14’s 5-0 win against Real Salt Lake at Buck Shaw Stadium. His previous two came toward the end of San Jose’s 2010 campaign, on Sept. 25 in a 3-2 win at Toronto FC and Oct. 20 in a 3-0 win against Chivas USA. Wondolowski’s hat trick was his fourth multi-goal game of the season and ninth of his career. Wondolowski Approaching MLS Single Season Record for Game-Winning Goals Chris Wondolowski is one game-winning goal away from tying an MLS record that he shared with former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz. Wondolowski (2010) and Ruiz (2002) have each recorded nine game-winning goals in a single season. San Jose’s striker has scored the game winner in eight of San Jose’s 13 victories to date. The Earthquakes have 13 games remaining for Wondolowski to try and match the record. Wondolowski Closing in on Club Scoring Mark Chris Wondolowski is seven goals away from matching Ronald Cerritos’ club record for career goals scored. Cerritos scored 61 goals in 148 games over six seasons in San Jose. Meanwhile, Wondolowski has 54 goals in 92 games over five seasons for the Earthquakes. Quakes Among MLS Category Leaders Through 22 games, the Earthquakes are No. 1 in MLS with 44 goals scored and 48 assists. With 27 scores conceded, the Quakes are also No. 1 in the league with a +18 goal differential. Additionally, the Quakes lead MLS in average goals scored per game with 2. Race for the Budweiser Golden Boot Chris Wondolowski is well clear of the chase pack after netting his third career hat trick in the Earthquakes’ 5-0 rout of Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Buck Shaw stadium. The Danville native has 17 goals, four more than his closest pursuer, New York’s Kenny Cooper. Rope-a-Dope The Quakes have a penchant for late-game heroics this season. The club is a league-best 4-4-3 when conceding first. Additionally, San Jose has scored five game winners – four in stoppage time – to go along with three equalizers in the 82nd minute or later. Late Goals in Bunches San Jose paces the league in goals over the final 30 minutes with 26. That total is 11 more than the next-best team, D.C. United. The Quakes also lead MLS comfortably with an incredible 15 strikes over the final 15 minutes of contests. Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids are next on the list with nine. The franchise record for such goals is 16 from the 1998 campaign. San Jose also has six goals in 2012 in the 90th minute or later.

In 2011 the Fire went 0-1-1 in the series, drawing 2-2 on May 28 at Toyota Park and falling 2-0 on September 10 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The two squads also met in the second play-in round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup May 24 as the Fire emerged victorious. After overcoming a 2-0 halftime deficit, the Men in Red pushed the match into penalties where they won 5-4. QUICK KICKS vs. San Jose Earthquakes (13-5-4, 43 pts.) The Fire hold a 12-8-10 all-time regular season advantage over the Earthquakes. The Fire are 5-6-4 in games played in the Bay Area. The Fire have only played at Buck Shaw Stadium three times; a 3-3 draw on April 11, 2009, a 3-0 win on September 29, 2010 and a 2-0 loss on September 10, 2011. The Fire went 0-1-1 against the Earthquakes in the 2011 MLS Regular Season series. Cory Gibbs’ diving header in the 80th minute earned the Men Red a point in a 2-2 draw on May 28 at Toyota Park. In the away leg the Fire fell 2-0 on September 10 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Fire will be without the services of Guatemalan midfielder Marco Pappa, who will be serving a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation. Pappa received his fifth yellow card of the season in the Fire’s July 18 match against the New York Red Bulls.
A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (9-7-4, 31 pts.) enter their 15th season of MLS play after rebounding midseason to post a 9-9-16 record, which left the side three points outside of the playoffs in 2011. Locking up the likes of Pavel Pardo and Logan Pause this past offseason, the team returns the entirety of its starting eleven to Toyota Park in 2012, while adding Uruguayan striker Federico Puppo, Brazilian midfielder Alex and Colombian midfielder Rafael Robayo to support the Ghanaian tandem of Dominic Oduro and Patrick Nyarko. The team also reinforced their defensive corps in the offseason by adding German World Cup veteran Arne Friedrich as well as two young defenders via the MLS SuperDraft in center back Austin Berry and left back Hunter Jumper who will be expected to provide cover for the likes of Cory Gibbs, Jalil Anibaba, Gonzalo Segares and Dan Gargan in 2012. MacDonald will occupy a Designated Player slot. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “Sherjill is a goal scorer who can hold the ball up, attack with pace and is very technically sound,” said Fire head coach Frank Klopas. “He has competed at a high level in Europe and will bolster our attack as we make a push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs.” MacDonald joins the Fire from Belgian Pro League Side Beerschot AC.
