SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs MONTRÉAL IMPACT BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. May 4, 2013 (WEEK 10, MLS Game #83) 1 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; TVA) The San Jose Earthquakes return home to face a real test in ending a long winless run, meeting the Eastern Conference-leading Montréal Impact on Saturday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes are winless in their last five matches, coming off a late 2-2 draw at Chivas USA last weekend. The Impact took over the top spot in the East with a 2-0 home win against Chicago last weekend, then rolled to the Canadian Championship final in impressive fashion at midweek with a dominant win against Toronto FC. The Impact won the only meeting between the clubs in Montréal’s inaugural MLS season, a 3-1 victory Aug. 18 at Stade Saputo. Coaches record: Frank Yallop vs. MTL: P1 W0 L1 D0 … Marco Schällibaum v SJ: first game SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes had their winless streak extended to five matches, despite coming back for yet another late draw in a 2-2 tie with Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center. The Quakes sit in sixth place in the Western Conference with 10 points from 9 matches. LAST MATCH The Earthquakes took the lead in the 40th minute. A free kick from the left was swung in toward the back post and Chris Wondolowski beat defender Joaquin Velazquez to the ball before finishing with aplomb. But Chivas USA scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half. In the 47th minute, Mario de Luna leveled the score when he deflecting a centering pass from Jorge Villafaña past San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch, finishing on the rebound after his first attempt was blocked. Just four minutes later, Chivas USA were in the left. Villafaña again set it up with a cross from the left and it came all the way across to forward Tristan Bowen, who slammed the back of the net with a scintillating leftfooted strike. But the Quakes found an answer in the 76th minute. Shea Salinas sent in a centering pass from the left and substitute Cordell Cato finished it off from inside the penalty area to leave the teams tied at 2-2. Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that came back for a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. Marvin Chavez started in the midfield in place of Ramiro Corrales. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Steven Beitashour, Victor Bernardez, Nana Attakora, Justin Morrow - Shea Salinas, Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Marvin Chavez (Cordell Cato 67) - Chris Wondolowski, Steven Lenhart (Adam Jahn 70). TEAM NEWS The Earthquakes are now winless in five games after last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Chivas USA, their longest winless run since their 13-game streak from June 17-Aug. 27, 2011. “I think the game plan and how many chances we created tonight was perfect,” Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop said. “Obviously conceding two goals is never good. We had enough chances to win this game. It was a frustrating night and disappointed for the guys. They put the effort in to get the three points and we could not quite do it. We played well but we have to do better on their goals, and it is something to look at.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
It was yet another late goal for the Quakes to snatch a point. A year ago, 22 of their 72 goals on the season came after the 76th minute; the tying goal vs. Chivas was their fourth (of eight total goals this year) to come after the 76-minute mark. “We could have fought a little bit more in the first half. We scored two goals away from home, which is good. The big thing is we should have had three points, but we did not lose the match, and I guess that’s how I have to look at it,” said Yallop. Shea Salinas set up both San Jose goals in the comeback draw vs. Chivas, his fourth two-assist game in six MLS seasons. “It’s a whole lot of running but it’s fun just running up and down the lanes. I like to say that I’m a really good runner and an OK soccer player, so track-meet games like that are fun for me,” said Salinas. “Just a little disappointed we didn’t get a few more goals on [Chivas USA]. Cato has been playing well. That was a great finish he had – left foot on the side of the net.” It was the first league goal for Cordell Cato, acquired in the offseason from Seattle Sounders FC, where he made eight appearances a year ago. He scored one goal in all competitions in Seattle – in the U.S. Open Cup vs. San Jose. “It was a feeling I’ve been missing for a year now,” said Cato. “It’s been long coming.” With Marvín Chavez making his first start of the season, Salinas moved to the right flank after his first seven appearances all came on the left side. “I don’t really have a preference, left or right,” Salinas said. “I think I have a few more options when I play on the left. I can cut inside a little better and I can still go wide and cross the ball. I like playing on the left, but I don’t mind playing on the right, either.”
MONTREAL IMPACT The Montréal Impact ended their brief two-game winless run, getting two second-half goals for a 2-0 win against the Chicago Fire on Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo. The Impact are first place in the Eastern Conference with 16 points from 7 matches. LAST MATCH The Impact finally broke through in the second half. A long pass from Wandrille Lefèvre from the right reached Andrea Pisanu, who fed Romero on the left wing. Romero tricked his way past Chicago right back Logan Pause and curled a beauty to the top right corner for the 57th-minute opener. The game then took a turn in the 64th minute, when Fire midfielder Jeff Larentowicz was sent off for tripping up Pisanu on a run toward goal. Impact striker Di Vaio wrapped up the game with a low, delicate finish in the 76th minute after newcomer Daniele Paponi served him a ball in the area. Impact head coach Marco Schällibaum made three changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Stade Saputo. Dennis Iapichino came into the back four for Karl Ouimette, and Andrea Pisanu and Daniele Paponi started in place of Patrice Bernier and Justin Mapp. MONTREAL IMPACT (4-4-2): Troy Perkins - Jeb Brovsky, Alessandro Nesta (Wandrille Lefevre 54), Hassoun Camara, Dennis Iapichino - Andres Romero, Felipe Martins (Patrice Bernier 61), Davy Arnaud, Andrea Pisanu (Justin Mapp 72) - Daniele Paponi, Marco Di Vaio. TEAM NEWS Following the 2-0 defeat in the first leg of the Canadian Championship semifinal, there was a tactical change for the Impact. Daniele Paponi partnered Marco Di Vaio in attack as Marco Schällibaum sent out his team in a 4-42. “As a coach, you have to send signals that you want to win the game 100 percent,” Schällibaum said. “I fielded a 4-4-2, but it was an attacking 4-4-2, with Felipe behind the strikers. I send them a good signal, and they understood my message. I’m really proud of this team.” For Paponi, it was his MLS debut after being acquired the week before from Bologna in Italy’s Serie A. “It went very well today,” Paponi said. “We were able to find each other in different spots and now, we just have to build on the positives from today.” Marco Di Vaio scored his fourth goal in the last five games. Over his last 15 games dating back to last year, Di Vaio has eight goals. “It’s different, but I’d already played 4-4-2, it’s not difficult. You have less space, but you must look for different spaces since you’re not alone up front,” Di Vaio said. “But we can do well this way. We’re more dangerous, we have more opportunities to score goals and we have more opportunities to win.” Impact academy product Wandrille Lefèvre made his full professional debut, coming on in the 54th minute in place of Alessandro Nesta, who suffered an adductor strain. “Alessandro had told me that his positional history was similar to mine,” Lefèvre said. “He was a midfielder at first and he played his first pro games in the middle, but for various reasons, including injuries, he moved to the back. He told me my profile could be similar. It’s up to me to develop the qualities to become a decent defender. I take up every one of his pieces of advice.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Lefèvre capped his debut by recording his first assist in MLS play, on the opening Impact goal. “I’m a natural midfielder, so playing as a central defender gave me a little bit of time and I was able to find Pisanu in the midfield,” he said. “But as a defender, you have to make the right decision to move the ball up field because you don’t want to lose possession.” On Wednesday, the Impact overcame a first-leg deficit with a 6-0 victory against Toronto FC in the second leg of their Canadian Championship semifinal at Stade Saputo, advancing to the final 6-2 on aggregate. Justin Mapp, Daniele Paponi, Marco Di Vaio (twice), Andrés Romero and Andrew Wenger all scored as the Impact equaled the record number of goals scored in an ACC game (Montreal 1-6 Toronto, June 18, 2009). “To come back from a game in which we suffered like we did in the first leg, we showed the high level that this team can play at,” said head coach Marco Schällibaum. “Tonight, we wanted to win without a doubt. I am very proud to be the coach of this team and proud of the guys tonight.” Said midfielder Patrice Bernier: “Today was a game about pride and character. We answered the critics from last week and we played a game that the fans will remember for a long time.” Here’s the Impact team: Evan Bush; Maxim Tissot, Hassoun Camara, Wandrille Lefèvre, Jeb Brovsky; Patrice Bernier, Justin Mapp, Davy Arnaud (Collen Warner 52'), Andrés Romero (Sanna Nyassi 90+); Daniele Paponi (Marco Di Vaio 38'), Andrew Wenger

Earthquakes Injury Report Out: Jason Hernandez (R – calf strain), Brad Ring (R – knee sprain); Doubtful: Tommy Muller (Lower back spasms); Questionable: Peter McGlynn (osteitis pubis), Ty Harden (osteitis pubis); Probable: David Bingham (L – quad strain),. Last Game Earthquakes 2, Chivas USA 2; April 27, 2013; The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Cordell Cato’s first career MLS goal was a timely one, rallying the Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw against Chivas USA. The Earthquakes pressed the action for most of the night, out-shooting Chivas USA (3-3-2, 11 pts.) 21-7 while holding a 58-42 percent advantage in possession. However, after taking an initial 1-0 first-half lead, the hosts scored a pair of early goals in the second stanza to put the pressure on San Jose. Chris Wondolowski tallied for the fourth time in 2013 to open the scoring. He broke loose at the far post on a spot kick from Shea Salinas in the 40th minute, tapping in a looped cross from close range for a 1-0 lead. Chivas USA scored the next two in a four-minute span out of the break. Jorge Villafana sent a cross into the 6-yard box that Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch tried to punch away in the 47th minute. However, the deflection came off of Chivas USA’s Mario de Luna and back into the goal to knot the match at 1-1. Tristan Bowen capped Chivas USA’s scoring in the 51st minute with a blast from inside the area. Eric Avila rolled a cross across the box and found Bowen open on the far edge. The striker punched his shot through traffic to beat Busch at the far post, giving Chivas USA a 2-1 lead. San Jose peppered Chivas USA’s frame for the remainder of the second half, but the equalizer didn’t come until the 76th minute. Cato, who came on for Marvin Chavez in the 67th minute, made a darting run to the near post to finish a Salinas cross from the wing. Nana Attakora was also credited with an assist on the play after chipping a ball past the back line to Salinas in stride.
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Montreal Impact, May 4, 2013 at 1 p.m. PT OPPONENT INFO Last Game vs. Montreal Impact Impact 3, Earthquakes 1; Aug. 18, 2012; Saputo Stadium, Montreal. The Earthquakes lost 3-1 to the Montreal Impact in their first ever appearance at Saputo Stadium. Chris Wondolowski struck first for the Quakes, but the Impact scored three straight goals to hand San Jose just their sixth loss of the season. The game came to life just past the 20 minute mark. Hassoun Camara and Steven Lenhart were both ejected following an altercation in the Impact’s box. The result of the play was a penalty kick for the Quakes. Wondolowski stepped up and drove a low shot to Impact goalkeeper Troy Perkins’ right for a 1-0 lead for San Jose. Wondolowski improved his league-leading goal total to 18, tying his career high and the Quakes club record, which he set in 2010. Just two minutes after San Jose had moved in front, the Impact struck back. Felipe Martins received a ball on the right wing and maneuvered around a Quakes defender before rolling a cross through the six-yard box. Marco Di Vaio got on the end of it and tapped it into an empty net to tie the match at 1-1. The Impact grabbed the lead in the 62nd minute through a Lamar Neagle goal from the top of the box. Patrice Bernier received a ball from Neagle on the edge of the box and held off two San Jose defenders before dropping it back to Neagle. He then curled a shot to the right corner past a diving Jon Busch. The lead grew to two goals following a penalty kick by Bernier. Di Vaio got in behind the Quakes defense and was pulled down in the box by Jason Hernandez resulting in a red card for a Hernandez and a penalty kick. Bernier pushed the spot kick to the lower right corner for a 3-1 advantage in the 72nd minute. The Quakes played the final 18 minutes a man down. Salinas Notches Fourth Career Multi-Assist Game San Jose midfielder Shea Salinas recorded his fourth career multi-assist game in the club’s 2-2 draw against Chivas USA on Saturday. His first came on a free kick in the 40th minute, springing Chris Wondolowski for an initial 1-0 lead; the second came in the 76th minute as he slid a cross to the near post, finding Cordell Cato in stride for an equalizer. Three of Salinas’ multi-assist games have come with San Jose; he also notched one in 2011 as a member of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Morrow Makes 50th Career Start Earthquakes defender Justin Morrow made his 50th career start in the Earthquakes’ 2-2 draw against Chivas USA on April 27. The 2012 MLS All-Star left back started 33 of San Jose’s 34 games one year ago – logging 2,970 minutes of a possible 3,060 in the process – and had put in 90-minute efforts in six of the club’s seven matches so far in 2013. He has three starts to date for San Jose. Lenhart Serving Two-Game Suspension The MLS Disciplinary Committee has suspended Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart for two games and fined him an undisclosed amount for violent conduct that endangered the safety of his opponent, Chivas USA’s Mario de Luna, in the 68th minute of their game on April 27. Lenhart did not appeal the decision and will serve his suspension on Saturday, May 4 when the Earthquakes host the Montreal Impact and May 8 when San Jose plays Toronto FC. Gordon Serving Three-Game Suspension MLS Commissioner Don Garber has suspended Gordon for three games and fined him an undisclosed amount for using unacceptable and offensive language towards an opponent in the 60th minute of the game against the Portland Timbers on April 14. Commissioner Garber also mandated that Gordon attend diversity and sensitivity training. This is in addition to the training that all MLS clubs attend at the beginning of each season. Gordon also received a red card for his second caution for separate fouls during the game and such an ejection carries an automatic one-game suspension and fine. Gordon will serve a total suspension of four games: April 21 against Portland, April 27 at Chivas USA, May 4 against Montreal Impact and May 8 against Toronto FC. United 2006-07. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. While most of the starting lineup is back in 2013, here’s a glance at the new additions bolstering the squad’s depth: D Dan Gargan – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 D Ty Harden – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 F Mike Fucito – Acquired via trade from Portland Timbers for second round SuperDraft pick on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on Feb. 13, 2013 D Peter McGlynn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on Feb. 15, 2013 D Nana Attakora – Signed on Feb. 22, 2013 after playing with FC Haka of Finland in 2012 F Adam Jahn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 D Tommy Muller – Acquired via MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 M Cordell Cato – Acquired via trade from Seattle Sounders FC on March 1, 2013 M Abu Tommy – Signed on March 12, 2013 after playing with FC Sheriff of Moldova in 2012 D Colin Mitchell – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 12, 2013 F/M Walter “Pery” Martinez – Signed on March 15, 2013 after playing with Chongqing FC in 2012 Historic Turnaround The Earthquakes improved by 28 points and 11 wins from their 2011 season, one of the best turnarounds in MLS history. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals Construction Resumes on New Earthquakes Stadium Construction has begun on the club’s stadium, which is set to open in 2014. The Earthquakes set a Guinness World Record for largest participatory groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 21, 2012 and began site prep work the week of Feb. 25. San Jose Earthquakes vs. Montreal Impact, May 4, 2013 at 1 p.m. PT And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 6. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 87-9-26 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. So far in 2013, the Earthquakes are 1-0-2 when scoring first. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2 when scoring first, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 8-1-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (130-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The Quakes are 85-10-22 (.813) in nine seasons under Yallop when striking first. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011 and 14-2-1 in 2012 and is 1-0-1 so far in 2013. Halftime Success Last season, the Earthquakes were amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 93-3-18 (.898) when leading at the half, including a mark of 1-0-2 so far in 2013. The club was 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field, 4-2-2 in 2011, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 70-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-0-1 in 2003. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. Earthquakes 5K/10K Challenge The San Jose Earthquakes announced that the club will host its second annual Earthquakes 5K/10K Challenge, benefiting The Health Trust of Silicon Valley and the San Jose Earthquakes Community Fund, on Sunday, Aug. 18. The event is co-produced by Threshold Racing and Firstwave Events, the same companies that organize the San Jose Turkey Trot, Santa Cruz Half Marathon, and the San Jose Metro Triathlon.
