SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. March 23, 2013 (WEEK 4, MLS Game #33) 7:30 p.m. PT (CSN-CA; KING/ROOT-NW/KOMO) Another key clash in the Western Conference is ahead on Saturday evening when the San Jose Earthquakes play host to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes return home following a 1-1 draw at the Columbus Crew, their first road match of the year. Sounders FC are looking for a first victory as they hit the road for the first time, coming off a dramatic late 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers at CenturyLink Field. REFEREE: Baldomero Toledo. But Sounders FC defeated the Quakes in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal in Santa Clara. Coaches record: Sigi Schmid vs. SJ: P30 W14 L11 D5 … Frank Yallop vs. SEA: P10 W5 L4 D1 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES The San Jose Earthquakes again provided some late drama in their first road test of the season, coming back for a late 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday evening at Crew Stadium. LAST MATCH The Crew took the lead in the 68th minute. Center back Gláuber sent home a diving header from a Federico Higuaín corner kick, his first MLS goal. But the Quakes pulled even just five minutes later. A quick change of field allowed Ramiro Corrales to find an overlapping Justin Morrow unmarked on the left side, and he fired a strike from 18 yards that carried into the right upper corner of the goal past Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum. Quakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that got two late goals for a 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls at Buck Shaw Stadium. Adam Jahn made his first start, coming into the side in place of Mike Fucito. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-4-2): Jon Busch - Ty Harden, Jason Hernandez, Victor Bernardez, Justin Morrow - Shea Salinas (Sam Garza 76), Sam Cronin, Rafael Baca, Ramiro Corrales - Chris Wondolowski, Adam Jahn. TEAM NEWS It was yet another late goal to snatch a result for the Quakes, a week after scoring late goals for the tying and winning tallies in the 2-1 win vs. New York. Last year, 40 of San Jose’s league-leading 72 goals came from the 60th minute onward. “I still think we really should have got three points. We’ll obviously settle for a tie, but I think the chances we created and the way we played was excellent and I think we deserved to win the game, but we couldn’t quite get that last touch,” said Quakes head coach Frank Yallop. Justin Morrow’s goal was his second in his fourth MLS season. His first came a year ago, on May 2, vs. D.C. United.
MLS GAME INFORMATION
“Great finish by Justin. We’ve been encouraging him to get forward more often. I thought he did a great job tonight of defending, but on both ends he was great,” said Yallop. Said Morrow: “The coaches have been really stressing to go forward, they know I’m an offensive player, they know I can help the team out by going forward.” The last player remaining from Major League Soccer’s inaugural season, San Jose’s Ramiro Corrales, recorded his first assist of the season in setting up Morrow’s equalizer. The Crew goal was the first allowed this season by San Jose from a set piece. A year ago, they allowed just one goal all year on a corner kick – also against Columbus (the Aug. 25 meeting). “We pride ourselves on not conceding goals on plays that are static – we don’t usually do that,” said Yallop. “I thought we did a great job against a team that’s good on set plays. They play in a good ball, they have some big boys coming in from the back, and they’re difficult to handle. But I thought we did a great job, other than the one play.” Yallop will have two changes in the back as Victor Bernardez has been called into national team duty by Honduras and Morrow was called into the U.S. side. “You can’t ever stop success, so for me, for players to get called into the national team, we’re doing our job,” Yallop said. “I’m really proud of the guys [getting] to a point in their game where other people are recognizing it, i.e. Jurgen Klinsmann, [Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez] and so on.” Yallop said Nana Attakora will likely slot in for Bernardez, alongside Jason Hernandez in central defense. Corrales could shift back to the left side of the back four, or MLS veterans Ty Harden or Dan Gargan could make their Earthquakes’ debuts. “This is going to give opportunities to other players,” goalie Jon Busch said. “That’s why Frank and John [Doyle, San Jose’s general manager] built this team deep and picked Nana up, and picked Ty up and picked Dan up. It’s another test for us, to see where our depth is.”
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC Seattle Sounders FC are still looking for a first league win after two matches, arch-rivals Portland Timbers getting a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw Saturday evening at CenturyLink Field. LAST MATCH Sounders FC took the lead after 13 minutes. Steve Zakuani picked up a stray pass in midfield and immediately streaked down the left side, cut in around the top of the penalty area and found Eddie Johnson at the far post with an inch-perfect cross for a first-time finish. But the Timbers found a dramatic equalizer in second-half stoppage time. Andrew Jean-Baptiste looped a high cross into the heart of the area and substitute Rodney Wallace found himself completely unmarked before sailing a header over Sounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning. Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made four changes to the team that opened the new season with a 1-0 loss to the Montréal Impact at CenturyLink Field. Djimi Traore and Marc Burch came into the back four for Zach Scott and Leo Gonzalez, Osvaldo Alonso started in midfield in place of Brad Evans, and Sammy Ochoa came into the attack in place of Mauro Rosales. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-4-2): Michael Gspurning - DeAndre Yedlin, Djimi Traore, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Marc Burch - Mario Martinez (Obafemi Martins 70), Andy Rose, Osvaldo Alonso, Steve Zakuani (Alex Caskey 81) - Eddie Johnson, Sammy Ochoa (Mauro Rosales 61). TEAM NEWS Sounders FC are still looking for a first league victory of the new season, with one point from two home games to start the season. “Our team had a tough game on Tuesday, an emotional game. We came back, I thought we started well. We haven't started games well this season, so I thought this was our best start to a game and we got the lead. Normally we make that stand up,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. “Now there's something that went right and you have built on what went right and eliminate what went wrong.” Barely hours after arriving in Seattle, Obafemi Martins was given his Sounders FC debut, coming in on the right side of the midfield for Mario Martinez. “We wanted to give him the opportunity, he wanted the opportunity, as well, because his mind, his spirit, his soul is here and he wants us to succeed and be successful. We didn't want him to play too many minutes,” said Schmid. “ … He hasn't trained with the team, he doesn't know the team, per se. He'll get better, and the things that he can do – his quickness and things like that – will show through.” Martins had to fly back to Nigeria immediately following the game, to join up with the Super Eagles ahead of their World Cup qualifying match against Kenya. “I thought it was better to come now and see the place, and I am going to the national team now...It was a little bit hard. I went to the embassy and that took a little time for the travel and all,” Martins said. “[Adrian Hanauer] really wanted me to stay so I can go straight to the national team, but I decided to come straight (here) to see the team and play as soon as possible.”
MLS GAME INFORMATION
Eddie Johnson scored his first league goal of the season, his second in as many games after netting in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal vs. Tigres of Mexico. But he will also be away on international duty this week. “It's frustrating, it just delays it another week because we can't train together,” said Schmid. “We need some time right now to train together, but hopefully once we get all them back we can implement that, but we still have the rest of the guys here, so we can get that nucleus to play and the cohesion within that group a little bit better right now.” Djimi Traoré was also given his Sounders FC and MLS debut, playing in central defense alongside Jhon Kennedy Hurtado. “I think the defense did really good. With our guys in the back I think we are ready to get settled for the season. We will find our way,” said goalkeeper Michael Gspurning. With Martins and Johnson both away on international duty, David Estrada could be in line to start in attack for Sounders FC. Estrada suffered a broken foot and did not make a start after May 26; he came through a 45minute reserve stint unscathed at the weekend. “He’s hungry,” Schmid said. “That’s never an issue with David. It’s about being smart. He’s the kind of guy that you have to lock into his locker to make sure he doesn’t over-train. It’s tough for it to heal when you overdo it each day. We have to find that right balance. It’s a little more difficult for him.” During the week, Sounders FC released Swedish fullback Adam Johansson. “It’s very important for Adam’s career for him to have regular first-team minutes, because he’s on the Swedish national team,” Schmid said. “And with Brad [Evans] maybe dropping to right back, DeAndre’s [Yedlin] development, that might not have made that an all regular basis for him.”

Earthquakes’ Last Game Earthquakes 1, Columbus Crew 1; March 16, 2013; Crew Stadium, Columbus, Ohio. The Earthquakes pulled off another late comeback to tie the Columbus Crew 1-1 to pick up a valuable road point at Crew Stadium. Justin Morrow played the role of hero with a left-footed blast from just outside the box to level the game in the 73rd minute. Glauber scored the only goal for the Crew. After a tight first half, the Quakes came out strong in the second half and created a number of chances. Shea Salinas had a right-footed drive saved by Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and Chris Wondolowski had a shot cleared off the line by the Crew defense. However, the Crew struck first through a set piece. Federico Higuain swerved in a corner kick to the near post and Glauber powered through a few defenders to head home the game’s opening goal in the 68th minute. The Quakes struck back just five minutes later as Morrow, playing in his home state of Ohio, netted the equalizer. Ramiro Corrales found Morrow with nice pass at the left edge of the box and he smashed a left-footed shot past a diving Gruenebaum just inside the far post. With his start vs. the Crew, Corrales played in his 298th career MLS match (including games played for the Miami Fusion and MetroStars). He is also the leader in games played in a San Jose uniform with 241. Jahn Makes First Career Start After scoring his first goal in the Earthquakes’ 2-1 comeback win over New York in his second appearance for the Quakes, the rookie out of Stanford made his first career start in last week’s 1-1 tie against the Columbus Crew. Jahn played a full 90 minutes against the Crew. Quakes Sign Martinez The San Jose Earthquakes announced on March 15 that they signed Honduran forward/midfielder Walter “Pery” Martinez. The World Cup veteran has made 51 appearances with Honduras, while scoring 12 goals. He played in all three matches for Honduras at the 2010 World Cup. In his club career, he has played for CD Victoria (Honduras), CD Marathon (Honduras), Deportivo Alaves (Spain), Beijing Guoan (China) and Chongqing FC (China). Comeback Kids Again Despite allowing the first goal for the third straight game, San Jose came back to earn points again on Saturday against the Columbus Crew. After Glauber gave the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute, Justin Morrow scored in the 73rd minute to give the Quakes a 1-1 tie. Last season, San Jose finished 4-4-6 for 18 points after allowing the first goal, the top record in MLS. Goonies Strike Again The Earthquakes set an MLS record with nine second-half stoppage-time goals in 2012, eight of which earned the team a win or a draw. The club was up to its same shenanigans in Week 2 as Adam Jahn scored an 83rd-minute equalizer and won a penalty that Chris Wondolowski slotted home in the 92nd minute. The First Rookie to Score Since… Adam Jahn’s 83rd-minute goal on March 10 made him the first rookie out of college to score since Rafael Baca found the net in a 4-2 win against FC Dallas on Oct. 22, 2011. Wondolowski Back on the Scoresheet Chris Wondolowski scored his first goal of 2013 with a 92nd-minute penalty in the Quakes 2-1 win against the New York Red Bulls on March 10. The strike was his 27th career game-winning goal, tying him with D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario for No. 6 in MLS history. Corrales Moving Up on Career Assists List Ramiro Corrales recorded an assist for the second straight game against the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. He now has 32 career assists with the Earthquakes, placing him fourth all time in team history. The veteran defender/midfielder is 15 away from the club record held by Ronald Cerritos and trails Eddie Lewis by three for No. 3 overall. Bernardez Called to Honduras Duty Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez has been called to Honduras national team duty ahead of 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Mexico on Friday, March 22 and Panama on Tuesday, March 26. Both matches will be played in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Bernardez, 30, has 61 career caps with Los Catrachos. 10 Away From Win No. 200 The Earthquakes are 10 wins away from their 200th as an MLS club. San Jose secured their 100th win on July 19, 2003 against D.C. United when the Earthquakes won 2-1. Manny Lagos scored the game winner in the 54th minute. The Earthquakes are also four away from 100 draws. Upcoming Milestones Rafael Baca and Justin Morrow are only five starts away from 50 game starts in an Earthquakes kit. With his next assist, Sam Cronin will have contributed an assist on 10 different occasions. Chris Wondolowski needs only two more starts to earn his 100th game start. He is
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders FC, March 23, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT also only 78 minutes away from his 9,000th minute play. After his remarkable season in 2012, Wondolowski needs just five more goals to reach his 70th goal scored with the Earthquakes. Defend the Shield Since the Earthquakes won the Supporters Shield in 2005, only three teams have successfully defended the shield in back-to-back seasons: the LA Galaxy 2010-11, Columbus Crew 2009-10 and D.C. United 2006-07. Wondo Inks Designated Player Contract Chris Wondolowski became the second Designated Player in club history when he signed a new contract with the Earthquakes on Tuesday, Feb. 26. He is the reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player after tying the league record for goals in a season with 27. Wondolowski also received MLS Best XI honors last season as well as the Budweiser Golden Boot. He is the club’s all-time leading goal scorer with 64 and set a league record for goals during a three-year stretch dating back to 2010 with 61 over that span. The only other DP in club history is Geovanni, a Brazilian attacker who was signed on Aug. 16, 2010. Fresh Faces in 2013 The Earthquakes added eight new players during the offseason. While most of the starting lineup is back in 2013, here’s a glance at the new additions bolstering the squad’s depth: D Dan Gargan – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 D Ty Harden – Acquired via MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 7, 2012, signed Jan. 25, 2013 F Mike Fucito – Acquired via trade from Portland Timbers for second round SuperDraft pick on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on Feb. 13, 2013 D Peter McGlynn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on Feb. 15, 2013 D Nana Attakora – Signed on Feb. 22, 2013 after playing with FC Haka of Finland in 2012 F Adam Jahn – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 D Tommy Muller – Acquired via MLS SuperDraft on Jan. 17, 2013, signed on March 1, 2013 M Cordell Cato – Acquired via trade from Seattle Sounders FC on March 1, 2013 M Abu Tommy – Signed on March 12, 2013 after playing with FC Sheriff of Moldova in 2012 D Colin Mitchell – Acquired via MLS Supplemental Draft on Jan. 22, 2013, signed on March 12, 2013 F/M Walter “Pery” Martinez – Signed on March 15, 2013 after playing with Chongqing FC in 2012 Historic Turnaround The Earthquakes improved by 28 points and 11 wins from their 2011 season, one of the best turnarounds in MLS history. The 28-point difference from 2011 to 2012 rank fourth on the MLS all-time list, 11 behind the 1999 MetroStars. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes’ 11 additional wins in 2012 rank No. 1 all-time, one-upping the 1999 MetroStars and 2009 New York Red Bulls. Club Records from 2012 The Earthquakes’ 19 wins in 2012 tied a club record set in 1999 while their 66 points established a new San Jose best. The Earthquakes won 10 of their games in 1999 via shootout, a tie-breaking procedure that is no longer a part of MLS rules. The club’s previous record for points in a season was 64 when they took home the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2005. Wondo in 20-Goal Club Chris Wondolowski’s 27 goals in 2012 made him the 10th player in league history to tally 20 or more times in a single season. The last player to score 20 or more in a season was Landon Donovan with the LA Galaxy in 2008. Goonie Stats from 2012 The Earthquakes made headlines in 2012 for their late-game heroics. Here’s some key stats to keep in mind from the Goonies: -40 goals during the final 30 minutes of matches -22 goals during the final 15 minutes of matches -9 goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which earned San Jose a win or draw -13 additional points in the standings the Earthquakes received due to second-half stoppage time goals Construction Resumes on New Earthquakes Stadium Construction has begun on the club’s stadium, which is set to open in 2014. The Earthquakes set a Guinness World Record for largest participatory groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 21, 2012 and began site prep work the week of Feb. 25. For more information about new stadium tickets, visit www.sjearthquakes.com/newstadium or call 408-556-7700. And Then There Was One Ramiro Corrales is the lone remaining active player in MLS who participated in the league’s inaugural 1996 season. Defender Frankie Hejduk and goalkeeper Zack Thornton made a handful of appearances for the LA Galaxy and Chivas USA, respectively, in 2011, but both announced their retirement prior to the 2012 season. Wondolowski’s 2012 Campaign Again Among the Most Prolific in Club History For the third straight season in 2012, Chris Wondolowski posted the top-scoring output in club history. With a penalty kick awarded in the final game of the regular-season against the Portland Timbers, Wondolowski tied MLS’s all-time scoring leader Roy Lassiter’s record of
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Seattle Sounders FC, March 23, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. PT 27 goals. Wondolowski is the only player in Earthquakes history to score 15 goals or more three times in his career. He and Ronald Cerritos are the only players in club history to produce multiple seasons with double-digit goal totals. The five best single-season goal outputs in club history follow: 1. Chris Wondolowski – 27 goals in 2012 2. Chris Wondolowski – 18 goals in 2010 3. Chris Wondolowski – 16 goals in 2011 4. Ronald Cerritos – 15 goals in 1999 5. Ariel Graziani – 14 goals in 2002 6. Ronald Cerritos – 13 goals in 1998 6. Paul Bravo – 13 goals in 1996 Busch Among All-time Leaders Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch finds himself among the all-time leaders in several goalkeeping categories. He is eighth in games played (232) and games started (231), while placing ninth in wins (92). With one more win he will move into a tie for eighth with Pat Onstad. Making the First One Count The Earthquakes are 86-9-24 since 2001 when scoring the first goal. In 2012, San Jose was 14-2-2 when scoring first, their two losses coming at Vancouver (2-1) on May 5 and at Montreal (3-1) on Aug. 18. The club was 7-4-5 in 2011, 12-0-2 in 2010, 6-1-5 in 2009 and 81-3 in 2008. Prior to 2010, San Jose also went undefeated in 2001 (13-0-2), 2003 (11-0-1) and 2005 (14-0-5) when scoring first. The Earthquakes were 12-2-0 in 2002 when finding the back of the net first, only giving up leads two times in losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4, and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. In 2004, the Quakes went 8-1-1 when scoring first, the best mark in MLS. The Quakes surrendered a 1-0 advantage and dropped a 2-1 decision at the LA Galaxy on July 4, 2004, losing for just the first time since July 27, 2002, when striking first. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting an 8-0-1 record all-time. Scoring First Under Yallop During Frank Yallop’s tenure with San Jose, the Earthquakes are one of the best teams in the league when scoring the first goal. The Quakes are 83-10-19 (.826) in nine seasons under Yallop when striking first. The team went 36-2-3 from 2001-03 when producing the first goal of the contest. The Quakes only gave up leads two times in 2002, losing 2-1 at the LA Galaxy on July 4 and falling at Kansas City by the same score on July 27. Yallop’s team was 8-1-3 in 2008 when scoring first, 6-1-5 in 2009, 12-0-2 in 2010, 7-4-5 in 2011 and is 14-2-1 in 2012. Halftime Success Last season, the Earthquakes were amongst the best in league history in holding onto a halftime lead. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Quakes are 92-3-16 (.901) when leading at the half, including marks of 12-0-1 in 2012, with the only draw coming against Portland on Oct. 27 at JELD-WEN Field, 4-2-2 in 2011, 7-0-2 in 2010, 4-0-3 in 2009, 6-1-0 in 2008, 7-0-3 in 2005, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 8-01 in 2003. They are off to a 11-0-0 start in 2012. Despite holding a 1-0 halftime lead on May 10, 2008, vs. Columbus, the Quakes were edged by the final score of 3-2. That game marked the team’s first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime advantage. M at C h p r e V i e W After advancing to the Champions League Semifinals and picking up its first point of the 2013 Major League Soccer season, Sounders FC travels to northern California for the first road test against the defending Supporters’ Shield winners San Jose Earthquakes. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT from Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The match will be televised on KING-5 with Ross Fletcher and Kasey Keller calling the action, and can also be heard on KIRO Radio 97.3. Spanish broadcasts will be available on KOMO2 and La Gran D 99.3 FM. The meeting with San Jose will be the 11th all-time regular season match between Seattle and San Jose. Sounders FC trails 4-5-1 after dropping all three matches by one goal each last season. The Earthquakes earned a late win against New York and salvaged a road point against Columbus on Saturday after dropping the first match of the season to Salt Lake. Golden Boot winner Chris Wondolowski has scored once as all three San Jose goals have been scored in the final 20 minutes. Sounders FC players Eddie Johnson (United States), Mario Martinez (Honduras), and Obafemi Martins (Nigeria) will miss Saturday’s match at San Jose for World Cup qualifying matches. Sounders FC will finish the opening month of the season with another road contest at Real Salt Lake on March 30 before opening the semifinal series against Mexico’s Santos Laguna on April 2 with the away leg on April 9 in Torreon, Mexico.

series notes The Earthquakes took the series lead last year with three wins, dropping Seattle to 4-5-1 in the all-time series. San Jose holds a 14-11 goal advantage, with Chris Wondolowski leading all scorers with five goals in the series. Seattle is 1-2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium, nearly earning a late draw in their last visit only to be undone by a late San Jose winner.
about san jose The Earthquakes have four points (1-1-1) through three games this season, including a win and a loss at Buck Shaw Stadium. San Jose is looking to build off of an impressive 2012 in which they won the Supporter's Shield with 66 points (19-6-9) and scored 72 goals, 13 more than any other team. They lost just one game at home (10-1-6) and held a league best +21 goal differential at home last season.
Frank Yallop's club is led by defending MLS MVP Chris Wondolowski, who won the 2012 Budweiser Golden Boot with 27 goals, tied for the MLS single-season record. Wondolowski scored his first goal of 2013 on a penalty kick in a 2-1 win over the Red Bulls. Ramiro Corrales, a 16-year MLS veteran with 37 career assists, has recorded an assist in each of the last two games. Forwards Alan Gordon and Steven Lenhart (23 goals combined in 2012) are each battling injuries and have yet to make an appearance in 2013. Fifteen-year MLS veteran Jon Busch has nine saves and has allowed four goals in three games this season. The San Jose backline will be shorthanded Saturday, with defenders Victor Bernardez (Honduras) and Justin Morrow (USA) away with national team duty. Bernardez was named the 2012 MLS Newcomer of the Year and Morrow's goal against Columbus is nominated for MLS Goal of the Week.
sea-sj C o n n e C t i o n s Seattle's Eddie Johnson and San Jose's Justin Morrow are teammates with the U.S. National Team for two upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. Mario Martinez and Victor Bernardez will also play together for Honduras. Former Sounders FC players Mike Fucito and Cordell Cato play for San Jose. Defender Ty Harden and midfielder Jacob Hustedt attended the University of Washington. Earthquakes forward Steven Lenhart played for Sigi Schmid and with Brad Evans in Columbus in 2008. Servando Carrasco and David Bingham played together at Cal-Berkeley.

The Earthquakes took down the Rave Green for the third time last season—the only club to do so—in a 2-1 result at CenturyLink Field. Steve Zakuani scored his first goal of the season when he tapped in a Sammy Ochoa cross in the 14th minute, tying the game 1-1 after the Earthquakes scored early. However, Chris Wondolowski got the game-winner when he knocked in his 10th game-winning goal of the season.

n o . 110: o z z i e s e t s C l u b r e C o r d With his inclusion in last Saturday's Starting XI, Osvaldo Alonso became the club leader with 110 starts, surpassing Fredy Montero's mark of 109. Alonso (114) still has six matches to go before passing Montero (119) to become the club's all-time leader in games played. In his fifth year in MLS, Alonso has started all but four appearances, and has only been subbed out five times.

Eddie Johnson is starting strong in his second season with Seattle. After 180 scoreless minutes to start the campaign, Johnson scored twice last week, netting the deciding goal in the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinal series against Tigres on Tuesday and scoring Seattle's lone goal versus the Portland Timbers on Saturday. He has played all 360 minutes this season and he has put seven of his 15 shots on frame. He continued his Cascadia dominance as he now has a total of five goals and one assist in just seven rivalry games. Johnson may have found a new set-up man this season in midfielder Steve Zakuani. Last year, it was Mauro Rosales who fed Johnson in the attack as the pair connected for six goals. This season, both of Johnson's goals have come from Zakuani's service. The duo had previously started just three games together before the 2013 season opener.

With his goal against Portland on Saturday evening, Eddie Johnson became the fastest player to score 15 goals in Sounders FC history. He accomplished the feat in just 30 games, six games fewer than Fredy Montero. Johnson has averaged one goal every two games since joining Seattle last year.

The streak is the longest active unbeaten streak in MLS. The last time Seattle scored first and came away with no points was on October 23, 2010 in a 2-1 loss at Houston. The New York Red Bulls hold the league record at 58 games (40-018), which started on October 9, 2008 and was snapped at San Jose on March 10.

DeAndre Yedlin has been touted as the future of Seattle’s backline, but if his start to the 2013 campaign is any indicator, the future is now. Yedlin started at right back in the season opener against the Montreal Impact, earning MLS Team of the Week honors in his professional debut as he became the second-youngest player to start for Sounders FC. In the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals, he made history with the opening goal in Seattle’s 3-1 win over Tigres UANL, becoming the youngest player to score a goal for Sounders FC (19 years, eight months and three days).

Seattle Sounders FC became the first MLS team to oust a Mexican team from the CONCACAF Champions League tournament with a 3-1 win over Tigres UANL at CenturyLink Field, clinching a 3-2 aggregate-goal series win.
