In 1864 Crayola—known then as Peekskill Chemical Works—was founded by Joseph Binney and only produced two products. Since then Crayola has evolved into a company that produces three billion crayons, six hundred million colored pencils, four hundred and sixty-five million markers, one hundred and ten million sticks of chalk, nine million silly putty eggs, and 1.5 million jars of paint. Not to mention the other thousands of products Crayola makes to inspire and encourage kids to express themselves through color. Over the years however Crayola have become stagnate, and instead of evolving they started to repeat themselves.
The question then becomes how do you take a well known company loved by kids and parents, and push it to stand out in our brand competitive world?

WHO WE WERE When one thinks of Crayola the question what is your favorite color of crayon often comes to mind. This is probably due to the fact that yearly Crayola produces nearly three billion crayons each year. However that wasn’t how Crayola got their start. It was in 1864 when Crayola was founded—known as Peekskill Chemical Work by a man named Joseph Binney. Back then they were only known for their two hardwood charcoal and the pigment lamp black. It wasn’t until 1885 the they introduced two new pigments red oxide and carbon black. That year the Joseph retired the company was taken over by his son Edwin and cousin Harold Smith who renamed the company Binney & Smith. Products included inks, dyes, and shipping room supplies including marking crayons. It wasn’t until 1903 that the first box set of crayons was made. Currently Crayola provides products that help inspire and encourage children to express themselves through color. However they also desire to help parents and educators to raise children who will grow up to be inspiring adults.

A NEW DIRECTION
In 2014 we decided to re-brand Crayola from a company that only supplies kids and parents with youthful, playful, and creative products to a company that now evokes creativity and imagination to inspire innovative thinking. The passion for innovation is all around us in the world, and industries of all disciplines are looking to creative individuals for the answers. The way we achieved such a leap was by taking the strong passion Crayola has for creativity, and adding to it the with the new and exciting world of innovation.
The question that then arose, was what part could Crayola play for these creative individuals?

What they saw was an opportunity to reach creative teens. They saw an advantage to give them the guidance they might need to help develop their creativity, help to uncover the creativity they never knew they had, and show them a world where their creativity could be applied to innovative thinking.

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
A NEW DIRECTION
CRAYOLA Alice Binney—wife to the founder of the company—coined the name CRAYOLA crayons. The name originated from the word craie—the French word for chalk—and ola—from oleaginous. This has been our trademark name since 1903 when our company was founded and remains one of the most important pieces of our heritage.
CRAYOLA NEXT
Due to the fact that the Crayola name is so well known and is tied to the idea of youth, and play we decided with our strong new direction we needed to re-brand the name as well.

20
However with a strong history and strong passion for creativity we didn’t want to drop the name Crayola completely. The decision to call ourselves Crayola Next ultimately came from our goal of wanting teens to learn how to apply their creativity, and skills to innovative thinking in hopes that one day they will be inspired to come up with the next big innovation.

IDENTITY
Crayola’s signature was redesigned in 2014 as we evolved our company into Crayola Next. Our old mark with its bubbly soft rounded typeface, and green with yellow coloring held the essence of playfulness, and youthfulness. Crayola’s signature was redesigned in 2014 as we evolved our company into Crayola Next. We needed a strong, modern, and sophisticated logo that held the new essence and direction of the company. The journey started by exploring the words Pioneer, Vivacious, and Discover, but was then simplified down to the word Creation.

FACTORIA
TYPOGRAPHY
Factoria looks good small and large and can be used from 10pt & higher.
The year 2014 brought big change for CRAYOLA with the creation and the evolution of the re-brand CRAYOLA NEXT. Therefore it seemed only appropriate to use a new and innovative font. Factoria was created by Mattox Shuler of Fort Foundry in 2014.
WHEN & HOW
Factoria was born out of the industry typeface, and is a geometric, square slab serif with a striking look and feel. With the evolution of CRAYOLA NEXT going towards education, and the future innovation it only seemed logical to go with a slab serif which usually gives the essence of an educational feeling. Factoria is unique and can be used for various applications at various sizes. It can go as large for signage on buildings, or as small for print and digital. The lighter versions provide a clean appearance, while the thicker weights have a more sturdy character. HEADERS ARE TO BE SET IN LIGHT, UPPERCASE WITH TEN TRACKING. IF ON A COLORED BACKGROUND THEY ARE TO BE SET IN MEDIUM. DISPLAYS ARE TO BE SET IN MEDIUM, UPPERCASE WITH TEN TRACKING.

FIRA SANS
TYPOGRAPHY
Fira Sans looks great small but when it gets large it starts to look horsey. Fira Sans can be used from 70pt and lower. Larger then 20pt only use Fira Sans Light.
Continuing with the concept of using a new and innovative font to reflect on the evolution and the creation of the re-brand CRAYOLA NEXT it seemed only logical to use another new and innovative font for its pairing. So what do you pair with a strong slab that has the essence of education, and future innovation? You pair it with a strong sans serif to give a strong contrast.
Here at CRAYOLA NEXT with our innovative thinking we see even more potential in this sans. We see it being used for not only digital but for advertising, packaging, book text, and editorial. DISPLAYS ARE TO BE SET IN MEDIUM, UPPERCASE WITH TEN TRACKING. Body copy is to be set in Fira Sans Light in Uppercase and Lowercase at 8/12. With no more then a tracking of ten.

Action shots will consist of the kids in the process of creating. They are to be tightly cropped close ups so that the focus draws the viewer in. Instead of being in full color they are to be black and white, and will at times incorporate a graphic element. With the removal of color the essence of the objects, situations, and scenarios can become more visible.

Our tutorial programs will not only be available at the academy but they will also be available digitally. Tutorial programs will be free to our students and for a monthly subscription they will be available to other creatives who want a chance to develop their skills. We want our students to feel confident and we want them to be able to take their skills and talents to the next level.

LEARN ONE ON ONE COACHING
Our students are often untapped, unchallenged, have no creative outlets, uninspired, overly directed, and have isolated hobbies. At CRAYOLA NEXT academy we will be offering one on one coaching to them in hopes of being there for them and help them focus on exactly what they would like to achieve with their creativity. After they find their niche however some may still feel stuck at what they could potentially do next with it. One on one coaching will help our students to find their potential career paths, and things they can do with their passions later in life.

TRAVEL ADVENTURES DISCOVERY TOURS
ADVENTURE
Here at CRAYOLA NEXT we believe that it is important to introduce different cultures into our lives to help shape us into well developed creative individuals. Creatives from all disciplines can benefit from traveling which is known to boost creativity by changing the way one thinks. Many return from another country with the ability to think more complexly and creatively, and you may be professionally more successful as a result.
At the CRAYOLA NEXT academy we believe in getting our students
Our travel adventures will be a chance for creative teens to branch outside of their normal surroundings and become influenced through the colors, food, architecture, and rituals of other cultures. There will be adventures throughout the United States, and there will trips that will take place to other countries.

We feel it is important for them to see the capabilities that they may possess as creative individuals, and to have the opportunity to talk to the designers, engineers, scientists, and other that are responsible for these innovations.

INNOVATION FAIR
ADVENTURE 114 Brand Style Guidelines Crayola Next
At the end of each semester at the CRAYOLA NEXT academy we will hold a two day innovation fair for all students to participate in. Students will be able to enter things they have been working on in their classes, or any side projects. If they do enter side projects we encourage them to work collaboratively rather then individually. The fair will be full of inventions, creativity, and resourcefulness. Our students will not only be able to display their work, but they will have the chance to discuss with other individuals about their process and what they hoped to accomplish with their innovations. We will be inviting real professionals in the field to observe what we do here at CRAYOLA NEXT. In hopes that our students will be able to get real meaningful feedback on their work.

ILIGHT MARINA BAY
iSwarm is a swarm of luminous “sea creatures” that interact with passers-by. Subtle and hardly visible by day, iSwarm comes alive at night. As daylight fades, the cells of iSwarm illuminate the waters of Marina Bay with fluorescent light reminiscent of natural phenomena such as bioluminescent algae or the Aurora Borealis. iSwarm reacts to groups of visitors by detecting human presence and greeting them with subtle modulation of its light patterns.”
