Being open to experience is consistently the strongest predictor of creative achievement. This consists of different facets such as intellectual curiosity, thrill seeking, openness to your emotions, and openness to fantasy. In general these are related to each other. What brings them all together is the drive for cognitive and behavioral exploration of the world inside and out. Being a design-centric person I often find myself constantly exploring: intellectually, in practice, and in life. Design a typographic visual system campaign for a non-profit organization of your choice. Create a strong visual system that can be applied to a range of platforms including a book, and a responsive informational website, environmental branding, and an app that will help people get excited about the organization.
NOAA Fisheries was the organization that I chose. My interest in marine life stems from when I was younger with a dream of working with marine animals. NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the nation’s living marine resources and their habitats. After research and exploration, I developed a visual system designed to hold up and function across multiple platforms. The visual goal was to arouse interest in marine life with a modern design aesthetic.

Design a non-profit organization to support the cause of your choice. Design an identity system, printed publication, responsive website, event, and environmental. All aspects were required to help display a strong visual system for the designed non-profit organization.
The concept for Finished Strong stemmed from the difficulty of finding information about poverty and resources for those in poverty. In light of the fact, that there is an abundance of available sites dedicated to both subjects. A desire to compile the massive information is what sparked its creation. It is a local service focusing on both aspects of poverty, those who help and those needing help. The purpose, to create a centralized location to obtain knowledge and awareness, how one can help through specific programs, and where those in need can find available help and benefits.

Design a book that visually portrays a concept relying solely on visuals with minimal use of typography. The book was to flow from spread to spread visually telling your story. The use of both digital art and hand crafted art was encouraged.
Cancer somehow has a way of creeping into our lives when we least expect it. It not only takes its toll on you but on your family, friends, even your community can be affected. It can often be a lonely disease that quickly puts things into perspective, while slowly tearing you apart from the inside out. For an entire day I decided to study the sculpture created by Bay Area Artist Seyed titled “Fountain Head. I sat near the fountain, and captured how the tree shadows cast darkness across the sculpture while the sun highlighted it. It reminded me of my uncle who passed away from cancer and how frail he looked yet his humor never left even for a second.

Choose a company to re-brand based on a self-discovered hand-written sign. Design a visual system of deliverables, that capture the essence of the re-brand. If possible reach out to the owner of the sign and uncover the sign’s story. The system should consist of a narrative, packaging, and advertisements.
While exploring downtown Walnut Creek I came across a little pop up flower shop in the plaza with gorgeous arrangements of flowers, and a hand crafted chalkboard sign that listed all the kinds they had. After purchasing a small handful and talking to the owner a re-branding was designed to capture the true farmer-florist essence of the brand. The intent was to make it feel more modern, while helping them stand out amongst other floral competitors in the surrounding area.

Choose an existing magazine and develop a concept of re-design with expression through experimental typography. It’s not often I find myself buying a magazine but when I do I have two intentions: to feel inspired, and to find a means of escape as I flip through the colorful pages.
Since I was a young child I have been in the love with the movie industry and every year would watch the Award show like it was a tied football game. Like many magazines People did a recap of the Oscars, which unfortunately I missed that year. Instead of feeling like I was there I felt almost cheated out of my 5 dollars. I choose to re-design People magazine and focus it on being an Oscar edition. Through experimental typography, and by using velum to create a hierarchy in layering and depth, I felt that it had created a timeless piece that people could hold on to and really feel that they have received their own Oscar.

From the concept of “The Quantified Self” choose a personal subject where I would be able to collect, organize, and sort data about myself. Use the data to design an interactive infographic and develop it into an interesting story about yourself.
It’s an Anxious Life was created from the data I collected from my own experiences. I believed that by tracking this data I would be able to understand what elevates it, and what alleviates it. To help collect the data I used three apps: fitbit, myfitnesspal, and anxiety management. Also I used life logging three times a day. My data consisted of all exercises, my consumption, and my sleep patterns. This interactive infographic was created for self-knowledge with the intention of improvement, awareness, and discovery.

Design aspects of a film festival dedicated to a director of your choice. Discover the common thread that appears in a set of their films, and conceptualize an aesthetic that brings it to life. Create a system of deliverables that captures the soul of the film festival, and applies to the visual system throughout.
Dark Revelation is dedicated to the director David Fincher. I am an admirer of his techniques including the strong visual sensibility to depict edgy subject matter, and visual sensual overcharged experiences he often creates. The common thread I discovered in the films was how the character’s obsession is fueled by the dark side of the human psyche which forces them to face their internal struggles leading them to the small piece of light in the dark. The film festival tells the story of a detective obsessed with a case.

Choose a brand that is dead, dying, or defunct, and identify its soul. Revive the brand by opening the company to a new audience while still remaining true to its original purpose. Design an extensive brand standards manual, identity, brand extensions, and strong visual system.
I decided to re-brand Crayola from a company that supplies kids and parents with youthful, playful, and creative products to a company that evokes both creativity, and imagination to inspire innovative thinking. The passion for innovation is all around us in the world, and industries of all disciplines are looking to creative individuals for the answers. The way I achieved such a big leap was by taking Crayola’s strong passion for creativity, and adding to it the new and exciting world of innovation.

A thesis gives you a chance to take on many roles within a single project. I was the designer, the art director, UX/UI designer, and the production manager at the same time. To start I was asked to choose a problem to solve through design, followed by extensive research, and then finally deliver a robust solution to the said problem.
The freedom I was given to work on my thesis CareAware allowed me to unleash my knowledge and my talents without being overly directed. I was able to find a strategic solution to the problem I uncovered from my research, which lead me to achieve a successful conceptualized solution. Through its creation I was able to redefine an idea, through the creation of a brand and educational system that changed how my audience involved themselves, and participated with their Health Insurance. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

First Things First To My Family Who didn’t hesitate for one minute when I told them I was driving out West to follow my dreams, who took my late night phone calls and encouraged me to push myself past all my limits, and who always had encouraging words for me when I felt I hit a wall head first. Thank you for always being there, always believing in me and always being the rock I needed to follow my passion. Secondly To My Professors Thank you for always expecting more out of me. Pushing me to exceed expectations I have grown immensely as a designer. I hope to make you proud as I enter into the wonderful world of design. Thirdly To My Friends Who understood when I missed out on important events to finish a project, who listened to me stress over and over again about my ideas, who came to visit me and get me out of my head during my breaks, and who always had a bottle or two of wine ready at the end of each semester. Thank you for always being there I would have been lost without your strength and confidence in me. Lastly To My Love Thank you for being there these last three semesters. For listening to me non-stop as I rambled on and on about health insurance day after day. For being my solid rock that I could depend on to remind me of my talent, and my strength when I felt I had none. Thank you for feeding me, for clean laundry, reminding me that an hour long nap doesn’t count as a night’s sleep, for hiding emergency stashes of gummy snacks around the house, and for just making MFA life easier. I know it wasn’t an easiest task but I will forever be grateful that you were there to support me.
