Fall 2015 Update 3
principal’s Message
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, You didn’t know Mr. Luginbill, my high school biology teacher. He opened my eyes to the world of science and teaching which forever changed my view of who I was and what I might become. Up until my sophomore year in high school my focus had been primarily on athletics having had success playing basketball and baseball. Mr. Luginbill’s influence was a significant factor in the goals I set for myself. His engaging style and encouragement along with my parent’s support instilled in me a desire to not just earn a Bachelor’s degree in science but a Masters in Curriculum and a Doctorate in Education. In wanting to emulate Mr. Luginbill I too taught biology for 10 years before being attracted to the administrative side of education. As the Interim Principal for 2015-2016 I have been visiting classrooms and observing outstanding teaching. As I enter classrooms I am reminded of my sophomore year when I see our enthusiastic and energetic teachers here at SJND inspiring students to begin their focus on longer term post high school goals. From Chemistry to Calculus to Government the preparation and dedication of our teachers is outstanding. Visiting several Theology classes this past week I was again reminded of our unique mission of helping students become respectful and compassionate individuals who are academically prepared, socially aware and inspired by Christ. Daily we are preparing students to take their place in the world to make a difference and help the human condition.

You, our wonderful donors, through your generosity have helped SJND grow into the school it is today. Our Biomedical Sciences Program and our Visual and Performing Arts Program are two outstanding examples of what is possible through your tremendous support. This report shows the many ways support can be given to SJND and those who have supported us in the past. Whether you support us through the Fund for SJND, an endowed scholarship or a capital campaign contribution, we are grateful to you in helping us continue to grow SJND and prepare students for life. Thank you for allowing many students, who normally would not be able to afford to, walk on the hallowed grounds of SJND and receive an outstanding Catholic education. Please know that your continued support has a powerful effect on all the students we serve. Sincerely,
Milt Werner, Ed.D. Interim Principal

A “Kairos” moment by Matthew Murray, SJND Campus Pastor
K
airos: the mysterious retreat the senior class attends. With a name like that of a recently discovered planet, Kairos is a week away from school, homework, sports, and other normal activities. Everyone who attends keeps the secrets of what happens from those who have not yet attended. Why this peculiar name for the retreat? Kairos is a Greek word used in the Bible meaning time. It is not the type of time we usually think about- seconds, minutes, hours, days- which is referred to as “chronos.” Kairos is specific period of time, a moment, the right moment. It refers to God’s sense of time, the moment where he acts in human lives and in human history. Kairos is a moment in which God brings about salvation, help, healing, and growth. It is used, for example, in 2 Corinthians 6:2, where St. Paul writes “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!” During Kairos, students are given the opportunity to enter into this new way of looking at time. Distractions are put away: phones are off, laptops are closed, and iPads are covered. At the retreat center, far removed from daily life, students not only survive, but cherish the time spent on Kairos. It creates space to look at the bigger picture, and gives their lives perspective by reflecting on what matters most. Retreatants are invited to come to know themselves better. It is also a time for reflection on the relationships that are a special part of their lives, including the role of their parents and loved ones. They have the chance
Seniors on Kairos LVII this fall
to see how far they have come with the other members of their class, and the opportunity to mend those relationships that may be broken. In each of these relationships, God is working and offering opportunities for a deeper relationship with Him. At a point of their lives before entering their final year at SJND, students take Kairos to reflect on their relationship with God and the example that Christ has left for those who follow Him through prayer, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and the Eucharist, they can hear and receive from Christ.
“At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!” — ST. PA U L , 2 C O RI N T H I A N S 6 :2
With all the gifts received during the Kairos experience- deeper selfknowledge, class unity, and a more meaningful relationship with God- it is evident why students treasure the retreat for the rest of their lives. Kairos is a chance to notice how God is working in their lives, and realize that every moment is indeed a “Kairos” moment. n

Class of 2015 Flies into the Future I
n May, SJND awarded diplomas to the Class of 2015 graduates, as they were sent out to lead lives of passion and purpose. Celebrating their spirit, academic excellence, and community contributions, the graduation ceremonies included distinguished alumni who shared their words of wisdom.
“Be well-rounded, be generous, and be resilient.” During commencement, Patricia O’Hara ’67, professor of law and former Dean at University of Notre Dame, contrasted the values heralded by pop culture with the values that undergird the faith-based education received at SJND. Such values include sacrificing self-interest for the common good, building an inclusive community, reaching out to the most marginalized, and the love of God and love of neighbor.
Stanford MBA graduate Ron Lewis ’04 offered sage advice at Senior assembly: “Be well-rounded, be generous, and be resilient.” Additionally, Class of 2015 valedictorian Courtney Shojinaga (at commencement) and salutatorian Maya Rowell (at Baccalaureate liturgy) provided fellow graduates with shared memories and aspirations for the future.
Last year’s celebration included extraordinary alumni across generations and was a reminder of the sense of purpose that shapes Pilot pride. Class of 2015, SJND’s newest alumni community members, we look forward to hearing about your college experiences and seeing you back on campus as your adventures continue. Congratulations! n
Courtney Shojinaga
Valedictorian of the Class of 2015, is attending UCLA. “Don’t stop changing and fighting for your aspirations and what you feel is right. We need to stand up for what we believe as we face the pressures of our current society, creating for ourselves and for others the world we want to live in, the world that we want to leave behind. Be the voice of the wallflowers blending into the background Be the light for those blinded by the darkness in their hearts Be the inspiration to persevere for those who are ready to give up The world may see you as just one person, unable to influence any great degree of change. But a simple word or brief exchange can change the entire world of another. We don’t always realize how much of an impact we make on the lives of others, but it’s high time we did. Let’s prove to everyone how high the class of twenty-one-five can fly.”

Artwork of Taylor Griffith ’15 heads to Congress I
n May, SJND received a special visit from Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Congresswoman Lee made a surprise announcement that Taylor Griffith ’15 was selected as the winner of the annual Congressional Arts Competition, An Artistic Discovery, to represent the 13th Congressional District. The Congressional Arts Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to recognize the artistic talents of student artists in their district. This year, more than 80 East Bay students submitted artwork for the competition. Griffith’s inspirational digital image, “Oakland in my Dream,” of Oakland’s lake and downtown will be displayed for one year in the heavily-traveled corridor that connects the Cannon House Office Building with the U.S. Capitol. Along with the award, Congresswoman Lee presented Taylor with two plane tickets to a special reception in D.C. to celebrate with other competition winners.
Congresswoman Lee said, “I congratulate Taylor Griffith on being this year’s winner and I send my warmest regards to all of the students who participated.” The SJND community is so excited for Taylor and honored to have Representative Lee visit in his honor. n

Kudos to PRISMS, the literary-art magazine published by students of SJND, as it celebrates its 25th year in 2015. A signature program of SJND, it all began when the English Department received a generous gift from faculty member Mr. David McCord. The gift was intended for a creative project of the department’s choosing. Mrs. Elizabeth Peláez Norris offered to produce a literary magazine, which was called PRISMS, a sister publication to the newspaper Kaleidoscope and yearbook Reflections. Since the spring of 1991, PRISMS has grown to an 84 page publication, a collection of Spanish prose and poetry, art, digital photography and musical compositions. It has won numerous literary magazine contests and awards. This year, PRISMS again won the “First Place with Special Merit” award in the American Scholastic Press Association’s annual magazine competition, and Julian DeGuzman ’15 received “Best Photographer.” The ASPA called PRISMS “a model for up-and-coming magazines.” PRISMS is proud of its over 100 Star Society of Creative Writers members whose work has been published or won awards outside the school community. From this stellar group, 5 Poets Laureate have emerged: Sarah Su ’10, Tia Gangopadhyay ’11, Robin Levy ’13, Amelia Khoo ’14, and Karina Leon ’15. That first gift of PRISMS has become the gift that keeps on giving: it is shared and enjoyed by our school community, and each SJND family receives a free copy. A “rainbow refraction of light,” PRISMS reflects the diversity of the SJND student body across different media, genres, and languages. n

CAREER DAY, CONT.
“SJND Career Day can be best summed up by two words: continuity and reciprocity. What the SJND community invested in me as a student, I want to return tenfold. The people on stage represented decades of SJND alumni and it was heartening to see such devotion persisting so long after graduation. We are Pilots and we care about the community we build year after year.” Dana R. Herrera ’93, Associate Professor, St. Mary’s College of California

career in any field is networking,” Allison said after the event. “I think both alumni and current students can learn a lot from one another, and events like Career Day help nurture and encourage those discussions and interactions. I found the event incredibly inspiring because it allowed me to meet so many driven young students open to hearing advice and coming to me with thoughtful questions to help them as they start their own careers.”

Students, past and present, are what any school should be about. SJND develops life-long learners who will forever fill a role -whether they are current students or long graduated. It would be easy to lose track of most graduates after they embark on their various careers, but a priority of SJND is to create deeper connections between students, alumni, and the school itself. The successes of our alumni in the real world help to form Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s reputation, which is proud to be known for graduates who are intelligent, innovative, and effective in their fields. SJND is thankful that many are willing to return to their alma mater to help mentor, teach, and guide future Pilot alumni.

Courtney Shojinaga ’15 expressed what Career Day meant to her: “Without a clear goal as my career path, Career Day at SJND came at an optimal time. This event presented me with an opportunity to learn more about different careers that I otherwise would not have learned much about. I attended the segments on Government and Political Sector with Shereda Nosakhare ’01 and Jim Conway ’75 and Finance with Vanessa Gonzales Anderson ’88. My nerves were calmed to find out that even if these particular careers aren’t the ones for me, there are many different options available in the future. The most important thing is to discover what you have a passion in. A passion so great that you would want to return to your high school years later and inspire other pilots to find a love in their careers.” n

Summer Highlights Students Cook Up “Everything Chocolate” for Summer Discovery It sounds too good to be true - an entire class dedicated to chocolate. One of the options for Summer Discovery this year was “Everything Chocolate.” Led by SJND staff member Mike Loring, for five days this summer, 20 chocolate lovers ages eight to thirteen learned how to make it, bake with it, pair it with certain foods, invent designer chocolate flavors and infuse chocolate with complementary flavors. The young chefs made everything from balsamic truffles and espresso-chocolate cake to hand cranked chocolate pasta with hazelnut cream sauce. On the final day of cooking students presented their work at a chocolate tasting party for sixty parents, relatives and staff. Here is a recipe that the chefs mastered:

STEPHEN CURRY Returns
to SJND to Run Elite Camp For the second year running at SJND, Under Armour and Stephen Curry brought together basketball guards from across the country for the week-long Select Camp. SJND Junior Jad’e Smith was among the players, which included five guards ranked by ESPN among the country’s Top 10.
Stephen Curry, who earned Most Valuable Player honors in the NBA on the way to leading the Golden State Warriors to the NBA crown, led the elite camp for point guards in late June. Fran Fraschilla, one of the lead instructors at the camp and current ESPN analyst, said “Being around Stephen Curry for four days…just by osmosis you pick up how to handle yourself in a first-class manner, both on and off the court.” The camp focused on leadership, preparation, workouts, and how to conduct oneself. Players discussed how Curry and the camp coaches were down to earth and approachable. High school athletes walked away from the tremendous experience with understanding that if you put in the hard work, the results will follow.

Music, Running and Independence Day Tradition This Fourth of July, our Pilot community had an impressive showing at the Annual Mayor’s R.A.C.E. (Ralph Appezzato Charity Event). At least 22 Pilots ran and medaled at the 5k benefitting Alameda Midway Shelter. Meanwhile, the SJND band rocked out in Alameda’s Fourth of July Parade, taking first place in the transported school band category! Ms. Cekola and the Pilot band were recognized at the Mayor’s awards ceremony at City Hall.

Dream Flight 2015
Supporting Pilots for lives of passion and purpose On October 3rd alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and students all gathered at the Claremont Country Club in Oakland for an evening of dining, dancing and giving. Together we raised $59,000 for tuition assistance for deserving young Pilots who may not otherwise afford an SJND education. Sean Croxton ’95 gave a heartfelt speech about his experience as a student and what it meant to him to learn that because of his circumstances at the time, his education had been fully supported by contributions from those in our community. “I was on the phone with my mom and it happened to be thanksgiving and this conversation about St. Joes and the tuition assistance I received as a student came up again, and what that was able to do for me, the doors it was able to open for me, the college opportunities it was able to make possible for me. As soon as I got off the phone, I got on my computer and I made my first donation. And I’ve had some really big wins as a business man in terms of getting, but there’s absolutely nothing like giving back.”
Sophomore Isabel Luna spoke eloquently about what receiving a Catholic education means for her and her family. “My parents wanted to put my sister and I in a Catholic school for a Christ centered upbringing. Academic excellence was just as important to them as a good moral foundation. They wanted me to grow up to know and feel that success in life means also sharing your blessings and giving service to others. They taught me there is more to life than just straight A’s or winning a championship. That having a generous spirit and a kind heart tops it all.”

Fall 2015 Update 17
Nineteen Years of Dedication:
Cross Country Soars with Coach Tony Fong ... the formula for success: belief, teamwork, mental toughness, sacrifice, and a solid work ethic. Dedicated to Saint Joseph Notre Dame for 19 years, Pilot Cross Country Coach Tony Fong has seen hundreds of kids come through SJND’s running program. He has led the Pilots to the Cross Country State Championship the last 10 years in a row, and to several titles: both the men’s and women’s cross country teams were undefeated in league last season, and are this year’s 2015 TCAL (Tri-County Athletic League) champions! Tony started his running career on the Newark Memorial High School’s cross country team. After college, prior to coaching at the high school level, he coached adults in marathon training. He was recruited to coach at SJND in 1996, hired by Gail Rodrigues ’70, longtime faculty and alumna.

updateFeature Tony has taken what he has learned from his former running coaches to shape his philosophy for the cross country program at SJND. He instills five principles as the formula for success: belief, teamwork, mental toughness, sacrifice, and a solid work ethic. He is passionate about teaching his team about training, racing, and competing at a high level. One of his favorite things as a coach is seeing each runner work toward achieving their personal goals. Tony says another aspect he enjoys is watching Pilot alumni runners get their start in high school and continue running at the college level. In fact, he has seen many runners receive college scholarships to compete at the next level. He reminds his team that the foundation of these accomplishments is not only representing themselves, but the Saint Joseph Notre Dame community. He expects his team to practice and compete with a humble attitude, treating their teammates and competitors with upmost respect. SJND has grown academically and athletically over the past several years, and was voted the Top Division Five Sports Program two years in a row by the CIF committee. Tony attributes these honors to the support of the teaching staff, other sports programs, and the SJND community. He recalls how the student body drove to Fresno over the Thanksgiving weekend to cheer on the Cross Country team at the State Championship. He says, “SJND has had much success in other sports programs, which helps to promote school spirit and support for each other. The combination of a solid academic program, competitive sports teams, and great coaches and teachers makes SJND a great place to coach.” After 19 years with SJND, Tony says that the achievements of the program, and support from Athletic Director Chris Pondok make coming back year after year an easy decision. “Every year I get a hand full of freshmen runners, and I know if they train hard and work hard, they will be very

This year I have a fantastic group of freshmen, so I know I have to stick it out for at least another four years!” Tony has kept in touch with many of the alumni runners and their families, and says that the SJND staff, alumni and families truly feel like a family. Each and every year is a new challenge, and working towards the goal of running at the State meet makes for a fun and rewarding season. A member of the West Valley Track Club for the last 25 years, Tony has run over 100 marathons himself and still actively competes. In addition to coaching, Tony works in the biotech industry, selling products and services to researchers and labs worldwide. Thankfully his schedule offers him flexibility, as he has athletes waiting for him at 3:30 for practice. n
Fall 2015 Update 19
Passing on Shared Values I am delighted to greet the Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School community as the new Assistant Principal of Institutional Advancement. Having spent the last two years as the Director of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, I’ve had the chance to meet many of you at reunions, alumni homecoming, career day and often over the phone giving thanks for your generosity to the school. These many fortunate encounters and conversations have reinforced for me the vibrancy and connection unique to the SJND community. I am heartened to hear of alumni friendships of fifty years or more. I’ve been delighted by the politeness of our students opening the door for a colleague here on campus or saying a quick and unprovoked “Hello Mrs. McFarland. How are you today?” as I take an afternoon stroll to the corner store. Speaking of corner store, I’ve found very amusing the stories from alumni about this elusive cheese bread? And from even earlier generations, stories of the sneaky bell schedules and bus routes contrived to prevent the St. Joe’s guys and Notre Dame gals from ever seeing one another within this one block of town.
ANNUAL REPORT OF 2014-15
DONORS
STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Most of all I’ve been impressed with the dedication of our faculty and staff to ensuring students are challenged academically and steadfastly counseled in applying for and choosing a college that is best suited to them. Our faculty do all of this while also providing students opportunities for self-discovery and spiritual growth. I feel gratitude at being a part of this small but mighty community of Pilots. The tradition of faith, scholarship and service that has been passed down from generation to generation of students is inspiring. I look forward each day to seeking out resources, financial and otherwise, to uphold this tradition; resources that support faculty and academic programs, facility improvements, tuition assistance and scholarship aid; resources that continue to promote excellence and student success.
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
I’m encouraged by the generosity and willingness of our community to collaborate with SJND in these efforts. I hope you will continue to invest in this place that has meant and continues to mean so much, to so many over the years. Thank you for keeping Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School and the aspirations of young Pilots in your hearts and prayers as we enter this season of thanksgiving. Warmly,

SJND is blessed with a strong and supportive community of donors to our Annual Fund whose connection to the school comes with many different stories. Regardless of whether a donor is an alumni class of 1945, or whether they are the parent of a child who will graduate in 2019, SJND and our legacy would not survive without the support of our generous donors from all cor ners of our community. So thank you to these and all supporters of SJND who help our current Pilots to soar!
With your help, SJND raised $535,886 for the Fund for SJND in 2014-2015.

It takes donations of time and money to create a community of well-rounded learners, taught and coached by dedicated professionals. It is wonderful to know that the money given to the annual fund helps all students have the opportunity to find what inspires them, and empowers the SJND faculty to guide them toward their potential.” — K RI S N E U G E BAU E R, SJ N D PARE N T Thomas K. MAKE GREAT DRAMA AND OTHER CAPITAL CAMPAIGNS The renovation and unveiling of the Georgia Vlahos Performing Arts Studio was made possible by many through their contributions to our 2014-15 Make Great Drama campaign. Renovations included adding a dance floor, black out shades, and state of the art lighting and audio equipment. The result is a beautiful rehearsal and small performance space dedicated to our beloved former teacher Georgia Vlahos. Old Friendship Makes Good THE JOE DELSOL ’69 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND Mark Zimmerman ’69 and Joe Delsol ’68 met in the summer of 1957 when Joe’s family moved down the street from Mark’s in the Oakland hills. It’s uncertain whether their friendship arose because they were the only two boys on the street, both having sisters in the house, or because they were the only two Catholic boys on the street. Whatever the reason, Mark and Joe became instant friends and both found themselves at St. Joseph’s High School. Mark was the best man at Joe’s wedding and although their career paths took them both out of state, they remained best friends. Sadly, after a long battle with prostate cancer, Joe passed away in March of 2015. In memory of his dear friend and classmate and the dear friend and classmate to so many, Mark Zimmerman established The Joe Delsol ’69 Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship exemplifies the power and impact of one friendship, at one formative time, in two young people’s lives. In the spirit of lasting friendship, three SJND students each year will have the opportunity to achieve an SJND education. The Joe Delsol ’69 Memorial Scholarship Fund will cover approximately half the annual tuition for three students, based on financial need. Thank you to Mark Zimmerman for your generosity to our current students and families, in memory of your friend Joe.
