Summer is a great time in a child’s life, and Summer Discovery at Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) makes summer even more memorable with a variety of fun, creative, active, and educational day camps for children in grades 3-9!
Summer Discovery 2020 offers something for everyone: sports, cooking, hiking, field trips, learning, and more. Camps are offered June 15–July 31. Families are invited to register for same-day morning and afternoon sessions so that kids can spend the whole day at SJND. Just bring a bag lunch!

SJND Summer Fun THEATER AND MUSIC SJND Triple Threat Theater Camp
Train to be a well-rounded theater performer in this fun, high-energy and supportive theater program! Learn acting, improvisation, dancing and singing from SJND’s amazing Drama Director, Lauren Rosi, and SJND advanced theater students. This theater camp is appropriate for all experience levels and culminates in a performance for families and friends. Grades 5-9, Cost: $625 (Early Bird $595) 2 Week Session: June 15-19; June 22-26, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Comedy & Improvisation
In improvisational theater, performers make up the scene or story as they go, without any script at all! Although it sounds challenging, improvisation is fun, silly, and a great way to build confidence on stage. In this camp, kids will work on active listening and teamwork skills as they use their imagination to create funny and original scenes. Towards the end of the week, we will use our improvisations as the basis for creating longer, scripted comedy sketches which can be taken home and performed for an audience of your choice! Grades 6-8, Cost: $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 13-17, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Choral Music Camp
Choral Music Camp is designed to enhance the musical, creative and expressive qualities of all students. Musical opportunities are provided for every child to learn the basic skills of singing, harmonizing, developing song repertoire, broadening listening skills and confidence. On Friday, July 17th, we will have a special performance! Grades 3-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 13-17, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Music Beats 101
This four-day course will provide 4th-8th grade students an introduction to music writing and DJ style beats and mixing. Students will learn how to notate music, play basic rhythms and learn about music “greats” from decades past. Students will be given the opportunity to apply their music skills to mixing and making beats. This camp is limited to 14 participants, so register early! Grades 4-8, Cost $175 (Early Bird $160) Week of June 29-July 2, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
ART & DESIGN Mixed Media Art
Spend the morning creating imaginative masterpieces! In this class you will experiment with mixed art media including 3D sculpting, painting, colored pencil, printmaking, pastels, and collage. This class is fun for all levels of experience! Grades 3-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of June 22-26, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Book Arts Studio
Do you love art, paper engineering and writing? Take a walk on your creative side! In this exciting, hands-on workshop you will build books that are interactive, fold, pop up, twist, hide and fit in the palm of your hand! You will learn techniques for designing and decorating paper, build at least 10 different book structures and experiment with creative writing. Grades 3-8, Cost: $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of June 15-19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Explore Painting Develop your skills in painting by experimenting with a variety of tools and techniques. Find out how to mix and blend colors. Learn how to brush, drip, scrape, smudge, stamp and pour watercolors and acrylics to create interesting visual effects. You will discover how to apply these techniques to make at least one realistic or abstract work of art to take home at the end of the week. Grades 3-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of June 22-26, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Drawing: Make it Pop! Discover how to use a variety of techniques and materials to make your drawing of objects and spaces look three dimensional. Practice using line, texture, pattern and color to create realistic-looking objects, figures and scenes. Learn a variety of ways to shade the shapes to give them form and volume. Apply perspective effects to create rooms, landscapes, cityscapes or outer space scenes that seem to leap from the page. Grades 3-8, Cost $175 (Early Bird $160) Week of June 29-July 2, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Becoming a Photographer Photography will give the students a basic understanding of the fundamentals of photography while giving some creativity in Adobe Photoshop. Students will have full access to the iMac lab, Adobe Photoshop 2020 and the Nikon cameras provided for the duration of the camp. The students will be encouraged to be creative and exposed to visually enticing techniques. Grades 5-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of June 15-19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Graphic Design Graphic Design will introduce students to Adobe Illustrator and Wacom tablets. Students will learn drawing techniques and how to transfer them into a digital environment. We will also play with different methods of how to communicate with design through fonts and placement within their designs. Students will be provided with iMacs, Adobe Illustrator 2020 and various models of Wacom tablets. Grades 5-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of June 15-19, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
FIELD TRIPS & SCIENCE Bay Area Adventures
Explore Bay Area destinations such as the Black Diamond Silica Mine, Moss Beach tide pools, Pacifica Pier for crabbing and kite flying, Mt. Diablo’s Rock City, Lands End, Twin Peaks, the Secret Slides, kayaking, Golden Gate Bridge, The Mystery Spot, and Muir Woods. Led by a SJND science teacher, we will also be conducting hands-on experiments along the way. This camp is limited to 16 participants, so register early! Grades 3-8,Cost: $450 (Early Bird $420) Week of July 20-24, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Science Exploration
Take science on the road with one of SJND’s science teachers and explore different scientific fields by going on supervised excursions to Bay Area scientific institutions such as the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation, Exploratorium, California Academy of Sciences, and the Amazon Warehouse/Distribution Center. We will also have hands on science activities along the way. Travel will be by school vans. This camp is limited to 16 participants, so register early! Grades 3-8, Cost: $450 (Early Bird $420) Week of July 27-31, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Exploring Through Gardening
Have you ever thought about what life is like in a garden as a worm, bee, seed or flower? Would you like to eat a rainbow? Exploring Through Gardening will let you explore and experience gardening with all of your senses! Through hands-on art, science, cooking and Earth/recycled material-based projects, you will learn about gardening. Expressive Collage Class Does your child love collage? Are they happy to get messy? Join us for an expressive collage class that will study several famous artists and work on infusing individuality into artwork. Magazines, glue, tissue, canvas, cardboard, and drawing will all be included in this art class. Grades 5-8, Cost $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 13-17, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
GAMES & TRAVEL Chess Comes Alive! The SJND Chess Camp is open to beginning players looking to learn how to play chess, as well as experienced players looking to develop their skills. On Monday through Wednesday, you will learn about the fundamentals of chess through lessons and strategies, and each day will end with games against an opponent where you can put those skills to practice. On Thursday and Friday, we will conclude the week with a chess tournament. Learn chess at your own pace and sharpen your critical thinking and strategic skills. World Cultures and Cuisines Travel the world without leaving the classroom! Students will “visit” several countries by engaging in a variety of fun and educational activities such as cooking, map making, creating art projects, and reading folktales. Students will also learn how to plan a trip of their own to the country of their choice. CULINARY ARTS Cooking and Crafting With Chocolate
In this hands-on class, students will cook, bake, melt, mold and make chocolate treats. We will create everything from hot entrées and baked goods to custom chocolate bars, ganache filled bon bons and hand-rolled truffles. We will use fine chocolate and chocolate beans from around the world, and of course we will eat everything we make with plenty to share with friends and family. Cupcakes and Muffins

Cookie Science
What if you only use brown sugar when making cookies? What makes them crispy? Chewy? Puffy? Satisfy your sweet tooth while experimenting with different cookie doughs. We will be making a different cookie each day! Grades 3-8, Cost: $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 6-10, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Ultimate Baking Challenge
Try your hand at tasty challenges using sweet and savory culinary combinations. Put interesting ingredients in cookies and muffins to compete for Most Creative Baker! Grades 3-8, Cost: $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 6-10, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Tasty Nutritious Cooking
Are the foods you eat nutritious or just delicious? We will be learning about nutrition, reading labels, analyzing sugar contents, finding out what artificial food colors do, learning what’s in fast food ingredients, and more. We will also visit the Alameda Farmers Market to buy fresh produce and make smoothies. Throughout the week we will make healthy snacks and lunches, and create a cookbook with nutrition info and healthy tasty recipes. Pilots Basketball: Girls Hoops
SJND brings a lot of fun to this week of basketball for girls who love hoops. Come learn from members of the SJND Girls Basketball Team, ranked in the nation’s Top 20 teams. Work on fundamentals and further develop your potential and love of the game. Grades 3-8, Cost: $220 (Early Bird $195) Week of July 6-10, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Distance Camp
SJND’s legendary cross country coach, Tony Fong will show you running techniques and strategies for improving endurance at the home of the state champion Pilots! Fun and Games: A Twist on PE
Get out of the house, put the electronics down and come play with live friends. We will have a fun week full of activities and cooperative games. Games like kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Speedball, even circuit training. All with the focus of equity, fair play and sportsmanship. We will be running, jumping, laughing, sharing and smiling. Just bring your desire for fun, active movement and positive attitude. Trail Treks Hiking Camp
Come hiking with us in the beautiful East Bay Hills. We will hike different trails each day, including Redwood Regional Park, Joaquin Miller Park.
