PRINCIPAL’SMessage "Thanks to the strong support of our donors and benefactors, SJND provided nearly $1.9 million in tuition assistance..." Thanks to the remarkable and consistent benevolence of supporters, SJND has been able to offer new academic courses in 2017-2018 in AP Psychology, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science Principles. Furthermore, our faculty has all been trained in a new professional development program and learning observation tool, and they each received new MacBook Air laptops, enhancing technology in the classrooms.
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, As the Principal of Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School, now in my second year in the role, I have a much better understanding and appreciation of why so many alumni love their alma mater and so generously support this school. SJND has been a “second family” for generations of men and women who entered its doors as wide-eyed freshmen and graduated as “confident, open-minded, and effective leaders ready to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship, and service.” Jesus in the Gospels reminds us of the universal theme of generosity: “to whom much has been given, much is expected.” The generosity of all the benefactors listed in these pages represents that desire to “give back” to the next generation of young scholars who will be our future leaders. Thanks to the strong support of our donors and benefactors, SJND provided nearly $1.9 million in tuition assistance, which allowed students and families who could not have otherwise afforded our tuition, a Catholic education at SJND. I cannot thank you enough for this most precious gift of Catholic education. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our alumni and friends, SJND welcomed 25 new students from St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland which sadly closed its doors in June. I am happy to report to you that these “new Pilots” are performing well in the classroom and fully integrating into athletic and extracurricular activities of our school.

Your generosity has enabled SJND to continue its growth trajectory as we work on year one of our new SJND Strategic Plan 2017-2020 which addresses four fundamental goals of our school: Catholic Identity and Mission, Academics, Admissions, and Advancement. The new leadership team has begun work in all four goal areas, and we are making tremendous progress. For example, in the goal area of Admissions, SJND is working very hard to “tell our great story” and it has been successful. SJND currently has an enrollment of 443 students with rising class enrollment in our freshmen and sophomore classes. A new retention team has directed its efforts to increase our retention of current students to an amazing 98 percent retention rate. Academic outcomes are proven in our highly successful college list for the graduating Class of 2017 which includes graduates attending some of the most prestigious colleges in the country including Harvard, Dartmouth, all of the UC schools, and some of the most selective Catholic universities. Annual Report of Donors 2016-2017
2016-17 was a record year for fundraising at SJND. Our alumni and parent participation in the Fund for SJND increased this past year. Additionally, we received two generous bequests from alumni who were a part of our Heritage Circle, a group of alumni and friends who include SJND in their estate plans. Opportunities for students to grow in mind, body and spirit continue to flourish as a result of donations from alumni, parents and friends. Examples include the addition of new courses this year in AP Computer Science, AP Chemistry and AP Psychology. We also added French to our languages program. We highlight in this report George and Sue Marinos, parents who stepped up with SJND and donated new computers to our computer lab, as well as Barbara Gregory, the widow of Richard Gregory '51, who started an endowment fund in honor of her late husband. There are countless ways donors help SJND to thrive and we count on your support to continue our good work. SJND welcomed 25 St. Elizabeth High School students to the Pilot community this year. With the support of our community, we are truly blessed to welcome these students as Pilots, to give them a school they can call home, and to support them in the completion of their Catholic high school education. Our 2016-17 Annual Report of Donors lists our heroes, those who have walked this block of Chestnut street since 1881—alumni, parents and friends. The list represents those who have made possible the growth of our academic programs, plus tuition assistance for approximately 60 percent of our student body. Our current Pilots, the next generation of open minded and effective leaders, are encouraged and inspired by your support. Thank you from the bottom of all of our hearts. As our Poet Laureate Jonathan Yannantuono '17 says, "[we] can do nothing to make it up to you all except a sincere thank you."

The strong 2016-17 financial report is a testament to SJND’s financial priorities driven by strategic planning, the responsible stewardship of finances and working with budgetary guidelines. Year-over-year growth of the Fund for SJND, Dream Flight Gala, and Annual Crab Feed and Auction as well as our endowment funds are critical to SJND’s financial stability and ability to provide a Catholic, college-preparatory education.

Leaving a Legacy
that Continues to Give In 2016-17, Barbara Gregory established the Richard ’51 and Barbara Gregory Endowment Fund at SJND in support of tuition assistance. Richard had worked with SJND’s Board of Directors during the merger of St. Joseph’s and Notre Dame High Schools, ensuring the continued success of the school as a co-educational institution. Upon his passing in 2008, Barbara discovered Richard had been giving generously to the school and she wanted to carry on his legacy. Barbara has remained involved with SJND as a friend and contributor ever since, attending many functions. “Each time I’ve been increasingly impressed with the staff, students, parents and apostolic mission of the school. I felt it was important to uphold my husband’s tradition of contributing monetarily to the community of SJND. Richard and I want our legacy to live on in the education of these bright young students.” The Richard ’51 and Barbara Gregory Endowment Fund will fund tuition for SJND students into perpetuity. SJND Thanks George Marinos and Susan Retta This past summer, George Marinos and Susan Retta, parents of Giulia '14 and Jack '18 Marinos, generously donated new iMacs to the SJND Computer Lab. The donation serves as a tribute to Retta’s parents. “My father was a tech guy for his time and both were incredibly supportive of education in any form. He (my father) and Jack were really close and this seemed like a fitting tribute to my parents and a way to both give back and to pay it forward,” Retta explained.
"Kids today have to be tech savvy in order to be competitive in the 21st century. This is applicable to any field: the sciences, the humanities, the arts and business." With an increasing emphasis on technology skills, the Computer Lab improvements create exciting new opportunities for our students. "The computer lab desperately needed to be upgraded— most of the equipment was at least eight years old and could not be upgraded any more, and some could not support new software at all," Retta said. "Kids today have to be tech savvy in order to be competitive in the 21st century. This is applicable to any field: the sciences, the humanities, the arts and business." classes in particular, which include Introduction to Computer Science and Programming and the newlylaunched AP Computer Science class. “The replacement of the slow and outdated machines with brand new equipment has made the students’ experience much more positive and productive,” Mr. Kallay explained. “Now we are able to log in and learn without tripping over technical barriers. This opens a whole new array of applications for exploration.” Overall, Marinos and Retta have high hopes for SJND's students and the school's expanding computer science program. "We hope that the students will use these tools to build, to create, to grow their imaginations and to take off like all great pilots and explorers do, and we hope to help the school to grow a robust and competitive program for the future."

Dream Flight Raises Record Amount for Tuition Assistance
Thank you to those who attended SJND's Third Annual Dream Flight event on October 14, 2017, generously hosted by the Kelly family at the Claremont Country Club. Together, we raised $95,000 to help fuel the Dream Flights of current and future Pilots! We were also pleased to award Clint Reilly and Bay Scholars with the Christi Matri award for outstanding service to Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School.
