St. Joseph Notre Dame High School
Dear Prospective SJND Family, As the Principal of Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School, I am so pleased that you are considering our school family. SJND is a warm and inclusive community with a commitment to the Catholic faith. As our mission states, we develop confident, open-minded, effective leaders who are ready to embrace our mission “to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship and service.” We offer a rigorous and engaging curriculum that empowers students to explore ideas, while providing them with the skills and guidance they need to prepare for college. With new course additions this year including Bay Area Marine Ecology, Ethnic Studies and French 2 (+ Honors), and 16 AP Courses and 23 Honors courses, our faculty and staff continue to meet the evolving needs of our students. Wherever a student’s skills and passions take them—in the art studio or on the field, in the science lab or on the court—they learn from dedicated teachers and coaches who personalize their learning. At SJND, our students come first. They enjoy a community that is diverse, supportive and welcoming. We value partnerships between parents, teachers and counselors which ensure students have abundant opportunities to participate, lead and create. More than 70 percent of students participate in athletics, and more than 37 percent study theater or music. Additionally, students lead through student government, clubs and campus ministry activities. SJND students have the opportunity to explore their unique spiritual and faith journeys. Through the campus ministry, retreat and service programs, students discover who they are, learn more about their classmates and understand the larger world around them. As a Catholic school, we educate students on the many issues surrounding social justice and service to others through their experiences inside and outside of the classroom. The best way for you to get to know SJND is to come for a visit, observe our classes and meet our tremendously kind and talented students, faculty and staff. I look forward to meeting with you and your family. Sincerely,
Kenneth Jennings Principal

L E AD T HROUGH SE RVI C E
Retreats are a powerful tool for high school students to examine the values they develop, as well as their relationships with others and their faith. Every year, students attend a retreat with their class, each of which vary and serve different purposes. The retreat program culminates with the highly-regarded Kairos senior retreat, a four-day, transformative retreat, free of cost to all students.
Service and civic responsibility are embedded in the SJND experience through the curriculum, retreats and various servicelearning opportunities. Volunteer with a club, serve with your classmates at St. Anthony’s Foundation in San Francisco or attend the annual week-long Sierra Service Project trip, among other opportunities.
J Freshman Retreat is a one-day class retreat that focuses on learning the SJND charism of the Holy Family, school culture, bonding with new classmates and trust. SJND hosts three freshman retreats and are hosted off campus at a designated retreat center. J Sophomore Immersion Retreat gives students a view of the social mission of the Catholic Church as they volunteer at Saint Anthony’s Foundation in the Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco. Students develop awareness of the plight of the poor and the marginalized and respond with compassion and mercy and a determination to work for peace and justice in our society.
Organizations we partner with: • American Red Cross • Alameda Food Bank • American Cancer Society • Catholic Charities • Habitat for Humanity • Oakland Catholic Worker
J Junior Retreat is an opportunity to bond together as a group and to develop the value of trust and confidence with one another. The main theme of this overnight retreat is for students to learn to trust themselves and their classmates, and hone in on their faith. The junior retreat is a one night, two-day experience and is hosted off campus at a designated retreat center.

FACI L I T I E S Our central location allows us to take advantage of local state-of-the-art facilities, including the athletics complex at College of Alameda and the newly-renovated Chuck Corica Golf Course. In the fall, you will often see our Cross Country Team running along the scenic Alameda shoreline or Crab Cove Beach. Our Gym is home to Frank LaPorte Court, a historic venue in the Bay Area basketball world and home to our basketball and volleyball teams.

BECOME A PILOT
SOAR WITH US! Welcome, and thank you for your interest in Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School! This is an exciting time for your family and our hope is that you use the admissions process to learn about the variety of educational opportunities available and the kind of school community that fits your family best. As an SJND parent and SJND alumna, we have had the pleasure to know and live through what it means to be a Pilot. As such, we can confidently say that our college preparatory high school lives true to its mission to develop confident, open-minded and effective leaders who are ready to live joyful lives of faith, scholarship and service. We offer several opportunities throughout the fall and winter to visit campus, and encourage you to see firsthand what SJND has to offer. We look forward to seeing you at Open House on Sunday, October 21 and having you participate in our Shadow Visit program. We recognize that the process of finding the best school is often an overwhelming one. Our Admissions team welcomes your calls and inquiries as you navigate this process. We look forward to meeting you and getting to know you better! Please feel free to reach out to our Admissions office at admissions@sjnd.org or (510) 995-9458.
