Welcome

LISA NORMAN

General Manager, South East Melbourne Hospitals As 2023 comes to a close we have an opportunity to look back over the year and reflect on our many successes. Our patient experience results have increased at all 3 south east Melbourne sites, which is an outstanding achievement when you consider we were already seeing great results. A positive patient experience requires everyone to perform their role well. The phone call patients receive prior to admission, the greeting as they arrive or the smile as a caregiver introduces themself for the first time, are all ways which allow a patient to feel comfortable and safe in our hospitals. Thank you to everyone directly involved in patient care for the work you do which allows patients to feel cared for and cared about whilst in our care. Thank you also to the administration and support teams for your work behind the scenes that help our clinical teams to perform their roles well. We all play a vital role in the patient experience and I am grateful to have such a committed team of people all focused on delivering a great patient experience. In looking back on the year we have seen many other successes….. Berwick Hospital was one of the first hospitals in Australia to undertake ACHS Short Notice Assessment. There was enormous work carried out by our Quality and Risk, and clinical teams to prepare us for this assessment. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Eveline Soon and Allison Merrigan in achieving great success with Accreditation. Langmore Centre celebrated its first year delivering care in Berwick from their new facility. They are treating more patients, attracting more psychiatrists and achieving higher patient experience results. Congratulations to Langmore Centre on your 1st Birthday.

So, what is the plan for 2024? Berwick Hospital will continue to work on the stage 4 redevelopment design and hope that the SJGHC Board see merit in investing in the project to allow this dream to come to life. The plans for stage 4 are on display in the ground floor executive area. Please come down, have a look and provide your input. We are also planning to commence a dialysis service at Berwick that will provide care for patients with renal failure. This service will mean our community can have a new type of service closer to home. We are leading a regional palliative care process that will allow us to form better relations with community services, ensuring our patients have access to a more co-ordinated and collaborative care model. In early 2024 the executive team will be leading a strategic planning session, planning our year ahead and considering the strategies which will ensure our sites remain leading health care services within the communities we serve. A big part of our planning will be to consider our caregiver survey results. Overall, SEM has shown an improvement on last year which is wonderful news. SEM Caregivers 2023

We are committed to improving the caregiver experience and our focus is on identifying areas for improvement and setting a plan to achieve a score of 4 across SEM. Please let me know if there is something you think would allow us to achieve this. I want to express my sincere gratitude for your hard work and dedication. Wishing you a joyful holiday season filled with warmth and laughter, surrounded by people you love.

Frankston has had a big year of community engagement with the Rotary Sunrise Group donating time to improve the mobility garden, local high school students creating 1500 paper cranes for the Palliative Care Unit and Frankston High School students painting a mural in the main physiotherapy gym. In July Berwick implemented a room service model that allows patients to order food on demand. This has been a huge change led extraordinarily well by our amazing team of catering leaders – Alan Bryan, Justin Keppel and Meena Handunge.

BERWICK Angela Ruiz- PCA Angela commenced with us at a time when we couldn’t recruit midwives. Her main role was to provide patients with love and support during a time of nursing shortages. Angela also supported the maternity team in any way she could. Angela’s personality is a happy one, wanting to make people’s day better. She offers hospitality with everything she does, even organising bubble baths and providing foot massages to the patients. Angela’s work value adds to the maternity team.

Financial success is great but the greater success is that we provide the best of care to our patients from the moment they enter our facilities to the moment they leave. Thank you and Merry Christmas.

Sue Hallifax- Business Development Manager I look back on this year with the Business Development (BD) team and consider how much we have achieved together. BD includes Marketing, GP Liaison and Consulting for our South East Melbourne Hospitals and we have much to be proud of. Led by Julie Gould, our consulting team support the doctors who admit and refer most of the patients we care for in our 3 sites. Their work is vital in keeping our beds full by supporting those doctors and their practices to choose SJG for their patient admissions. Did you know 119 doctors consult every month in the sessional rooms at Berwick and 16 at Langmore? Each of those doctors and their practices have different needs which our consulting team capably manage. Our GP Liaison Officer, Olivia Macente has had a busy year promoting our services and specialists to GPs in our local communities. Our GP events have included; 72 lunch meetings attended by our specialists in 42 GP practices and attended by 396 GP’s; 8 GP education dinner meetings where 27 of our specialists presented to 175 GP’s in total. As we have all had to find ways to make savings this year, Marketing and Communications Manager Lisa Carman has reinvented the way she works so that she can still create all the great marketing but without any actual team members in her office. Instead she has created a ‘virtual team’ of group marketing and contractors for all the marketing assistance she needs. Among the 2023 marketing highlights, over 550 social media posts have been created and shared for our three hospitals, reaching over 850,000 people and leading to people clicking though to our websites and enquiring about our services. Our GP/VMO newsletters reached 346 GPs and 685 VMOs per month. The marketing team developed brochures, advertising campaigns, newsletters, have kept our websites up to date, and more! Our goal in BD, Marketing, GP Liaison and Consulting is to ensure referrals and admissions come into our three hospitals. We look forward to 2024 with the knowledge that the work we do will help fill our programs and beds.

Allison Merrigan - Director of Nursing (Berwick) As another year draws to a close a few thoughts cross my mind. First and foremost, what happened to 2023? It seems to have passed by in a blink of an eye. The best part though is that Christmas is my favourite time of year so I am eagerly awaiting the festive season, filled with family, friends, present giving and receiving – and a summer of cricket!! Over the past 12 months it has been lovely to have experienced a relative return to ‘business as usual,’ though Covid is always lurking in the background. There have been many highlights for our teams. What I am particularly proud of is our consistently high positive patient feedback, with our score sitting at an exceptional 82.9, second best across all of SJG. This score represents a patient group who are very happy with their experience and feel safe and well cared for. Our patient experience has been enhanced by each caregiver’s commitment to the 3C program – keeping communication, connection and compassion at the forefront of everything we do. In September we also successfully achieved accreditation to the NSQHS Standards via Short Notice Assessment with no recommendations. Short notice assessment ensures we are always providing the expected standard of safety and quality and, with only 24 hours’ notice that assessors will be onsite, it ensures we maintain these Standards every single day. Each team has worked incredibly hard this year to meet the needs of our patients and families. It would be too big a task to list each unit’s achievements over the year as all teams are committed to enhancing the patient experience at every opportunity. I remain quietly in awe of the talents, professionalism and commitment to our Values that each of you bring to our special workplace. As we herald in a new year, I wish you a safe and healthy Christmas, and thank you to those caregivers who will share this time working and caring for our patients.

Karen Ward – Director Clinical Services (Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital) I would like to start by saying a huge thank you to all our caregivers for all your hard work and dedication. This year has had its ups and downs, with the ever changing pandemic rules on masks and testing, and changes to services and financial struggles. Through it all you have all shown strength, resilience and patience. Our biggest highlight of the year was making budget at the end of the financial year 2022., What an amazing achievement, made possible by all the hard work and efforts of every caregiver with regards to financial stewardship, the assistance of the public contract and the start of our programs. In 2023 we have opened a spasticity clinic and increased more programs. We are also looking forward to commencing other new programs in the new year. Other highlights throughout the year involving our local community have been; our art exhibition, thank you night to our referrers and the wonderful mural painted in the pomegranate gym by the students of Frankston High School. Internally, we have had many wellbeing activities such as massage day, smoothie day, footy competition and many others. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and happy new year.

Dr John Monagle – Director Medical Services Another busy year has passed and we have achieved a lot as we have moved out of the Covid-19 pandemic. This has allowed us to begin to look forward and plan for the future with new services to meet the needs of our growing communities. I’d like to thank each of our caregivers and VMOs for their ongoing support and dedication throughout 2023. I wish you all a restful and happy Christmas and new year.

Linda Allen- CEO (Langmore Centre) At this significant time of year, we have a tendency to look back over the last 12 months and ponder the year to come. It brings to mind two recent conversations. One with a caregiver whom spoke of being driven to achieve and another whom led reflection at our recent OH&S meeting and spoke of dreaming. It has made me wonder about those words. I expect we need both, the dream to create the ideas and images of what could be and then the drive to achieve them. They are great words to use when thinking about our lives at home and at work. Like many industries healthcare is experiencing a challenging time, the continuing workforce shortages, the increasing numbers of those diagnosed with chronic illness and spiralling costs to name a few. We face many of these issues locally and you all contribute to balancing the competing priorities of patient safety and experience, caregiver and VMO experience, community engagement and financial stewardship. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone for continuing to find ways to improve the patient experience and outcomes. The NPS results reflect the great work you are doing. We also have some terrific information from the recent caregiver engagement survey and although you’ve told us Langmore is a good place to work and as a team we get a lot right, there are however some areas of opportunity and this will give us some focus for the new year. Our other challenge is financial stewardship and whilst we are excited growth of our services as new VMOs start in 2024, we still need to find ways to reduce our costs. If we get all these aspects balanced we will ensure we continue to build a sustainable hospital for those with mental health needs in our community. So, I hope this Christmas you have time for some dreams about what is possible for both work and home and I look forward to all the achievements in store for us in the new year. I wish you and your families a safe and Happy Christmas and all the best for a fabulous 2024.

Shelley Cooper- Director of Clinical Services (Langmore Centre) As another year draws to a close, it’s great to reflect and consider all that has been achieved. As a team, we have: -

Grown our service to our highest occupancy yet, 56 overnight patients Grown our first strawberries in our Sensory Garden Bid farewell to some of our team, and welcomed some new faces Established ourselves as part of the Berwick community, developing relationships with the Rotary, RSL and the Women’s Auxiliary to name but a few. The skill, dedication, and care demonstrated by each and every one of our caregivers, each and every day helps people and their families in recovering from mental health and addiction. As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank you for your ongoing commitment to our patients and each other, and wish you and your families a wonderful, safe, and fun holiday season.

Rhonda O’Connor – Director of Mission Integration As this year draws to a close, I am conscious that is has been a busy and demanding time at all three of our SEM sites. With Covid and Flu never far away, financial pressures and demands, at times is has been very stressful. I am always heartened though to see and hear our Caregivers constantly reaching out to each other with support, a word of encouragement or a friendly smile. The feedback comment we receive through the NPS at all three sites shows us that despite all challenges, the vast majority of our patients feel safe, cared for and would recommend us to family and friends. Often individual caregivers are named personally, which is an obvious testament to the great connection and care that they have received. Our mission and values are well and truly alive in the daily actions and care that is on show. Thankfully, many caregivers have been able to have long awaited holidays or breaks that were delayed over the past few year. I hope and pray that each of you may find time to relax and refresh of the Christmas period and that you and your families have a safe and blessed new year.

Eveline Soon – Clinical Governance Manager Time flies when you’re having fun… and 2023 has been a blur! I always enjoy a moment of reflection at this time of year, as it is an opportunity to bask in our accomplishments and realise how much have been achieved, including: •

Berwick Hospital has successfully completed our first Short Notice Assessment (SNA). With only 48 hour notice from our assessors regarding their SNA visit, managers and caregivers worked hard to ensure their areas and hospital as a whole was always ready for accreditation. This was evident as there was an air of calmness and confidence around the hospital when the news was received. Well done to all caregivers for this wonderful achievement! We received feedback regarding the immense time and resource required to complete audits across SEM hospitals. We listened and revamped our auditing framework to Risk Based Auditing, which meant we were able to reduce the number of audits completed yearly, from 7000+ to less than 1000 across SEM hospitals. This ensured audits were targeted for each area and opportunities for improvements were aligned with safety themes. Unannounced quality checks by SEM Quality and Risk team and Executive teams were introduced, with the aim to help managers and caregivers be familiar and comfortable talking to all quality related issues. This included Spot Assessments, Executive Patient Safety Huddles, Quality Huddles, Patient Journeys and facelift to our Quality Boards.

I am confident 2024 will bring many innovative improvement opportunities, as we continue to provide high quality and safe patient care. Whatever you may have planned over this festive season, I wish you and your loved ones a merry and safe Christmas and wonderful New Year.

Nicki Hockley- Acting Director of Corporate Services It’s been a joy to hold the fort for Director of Corporate Services, Sara Crees while she is enjoying her beautiful new baby boy and maternity leave at home with her family. During 2023 the corprate services departments (facilities, catering, environmental services) have worked hard across the 3 SEM hospitals and have consistently delivered hospitality to our patients by keeping our facilities clean, tidy, safe, functional and fed! This is reflected regularly in our NPS data which always demonstrates the importance that the work of these departments plays in the hospital experience for our patients. I’d like to congratulate and thank the caregivers who deliver this exceptional work and contribute so much every day. Thank you all for your support and I wish everyone a very merry Christmas.

FRANKSTON NEWS Students painting a brighter recovery for rehabilitation patients As part of a community-based collaboration, St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital has teamed up with Frankston High School to create a meaningful mural to brighten the hospital experience for rehabilitation patients. The mural, conceptualised and painted by year 11 students, was planned with patient well-being in mind. It aims to capture the very heart of the patient-centred care offered at the hospital by using pomegranates as a basis of the design.

a perfect opportunity to show case the artwork and talents of local students. “Rehabilitation patients can be in hospital for weeks at a time. It’s important that we create a bright, uplifting space so they can recover well and have a positive hospital stay,” said Karen. “I think our patients and caregivers will find it touching that local students have taken the time to enhance their experience within our facility.” The mural is now permanently on display in the level 1 gym at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital.

“I liked the idea of doing something for my community and to help make the hospital stay for patients a bit better,” explained student, Clemence Redey. St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital Director of Clinical Services, Karen Ward explained that the pomegranate is an important symbol to St John of God Health Care. “It represents our heritage – as the original symbol of the Sisters of St John of God – and our vision for the future,” she said. The rehabilitation hospital, which has been a staple of the Frankston community since 2004, was in need of some new artwork on the gymnasium walls. This created

Global Handwashing Day Each year on Global Handwashing Day our infection control team and volunteers visit a local primary school and teach prep students about the importance of keeping their hands clean. This is an interactive and fun way to make sure the adults of tomorrow are equipped with easy ways to keep themselves healthy and well.

PARTNERSHIP TO PROVIDE PIPELINE OF SKILLED NURSES IN THE SOUTHEAST Federation University Australia and St John of God Health Care are working together to educate the next generation of local nurses to help address the skills needs of the southeast Victoria region. Through a Fellowship program, students are embedded within St John of God Health Care’s three South East Melbourne hospitals. Here, they will complete their clinical placement throughout their degree while maintaining ties to their local community. The program aims to generate a pipeline of skilled healthcare workers who are both work and world ready through direct connection to employers. There are currently six second year and six thirdyear students in the Fellowship. Second-year Bachelor of Nursing student Jag Korneluk is undertaking the fellowship and said the hospitals offer a supportive, flexible environment. “It’s just fantastic. It takes the pressure off knowing where your placement is going to be and you remain familiar with the hospital and build relationships with the facilitators and they get to know you. “They are happy to explain anything to you, running education sessions towards the end of the week to reinforce the knowledge you’ve built at university.”

Mini-Field of Women Above: Fellowship students

Our annual Mini-Field of Women was held in the beautiful Spring sunshine during Breast Cancer Month in October. Hosting a BCNA Mini-Field of Women event is a way to pay tribute to all those affected by breast cancer in our community. A Mini-Field of Women is a display of Pink Lady silhouettes symbolising the over 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year. We take the opportunity to invite our patients who have survived breast cancer, those currently receiving treatment and family members of those who have a lost a loved one to the disease.

LANGMORE NEWS Spring in the Sensory Garden

Foundation Day at Langmore

Spring has sprung in the Sensory Garden, a newly created space at Langmore Centre. The garden, designed and implemented by Julian Woods, Exercise Physiologist, provides a wonderful location for patients to combine physical activity with social interaction and exposure to nature and sunlight. Patients learn gardening skills, as well as planting seeds that can be taken home with them on discharge.

Langmore celebrated its second Foundation Day onsite, and we were pleased to be joined by Sister Johanna. This year we thanked Nella Listro, Patient Services Manager, for her 25 years of service. Nella, who joined the service in 1998, has seen many changes, including the move to Langmore last year.

A growing body of research indicates the physical and emotional benefits of gardening can lead to decreased stress, anxiety and fatigue, along with improved selfesteem and mood.

Nella supports us all with her wealth of knowledge of patient administration, health fund contracts, the location of most things, and always has a contact, internal and external, when we have a question. Thanks for your 25 years of service Nella.

We can’t wait to see the next step in the garden journey, where our in house chefs will provide cooking demonstrations to patients using the produce grown to encourage healthy eating.

Lest We Forget We were privileged to have Elwyn and Terry Sparks from Berwick RSL lead us in a Remembrance Day Service at Langmore Centre. Our relationship with the local RSL assists us in better supporting returned services personnel in their recovery. Patients and caregivers have also been busy in the Art Therapy space creating poppies in honour of those who gave their lives in service.

Allied Health Angels October was bitter sweet for our Langmore Therapy team. Whilst we thanked and said goodbye to Angel Ching as our Therapy Manager, we welcomed Angel Chen into the role. Angel is an experienced Social Worker and CPT therapist who joins the team from Cabrini. Angel is doing a wonderful job in supporting the team and commencing development of new services at Langmore Centre, closely supported by Angel Ching in her Allied Health Manager role at Berwick.

50,000 rTMS treatments and counting… In November, the rTMS team celebrated administration of 50,000 rTMS treatments at Langmore Centre. We have seen over 4,000 admissions to the service since operation. Our team also hit a record high of providing 52 treatments in one day! The service, commenced in July 2014 by NUM Tina Ces and team, has supported patients to improve their mood and decrease their anxiety, using a non-invasive, safe, and well tolerated procedure. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) uses a magnetic coil to stimulate the part of the brain that regulates mood. This effective treatment is comfortable, non-invasive, causes no down-time and can be a good alternative for patients who suffer side-effects from medication. Tina (pictured), and the team have recently commenced further training which will allow us to explore using rTMS to treat other mental health issues such as OCD and addiction. To learn more about rTMS visit: https://shorturl.at/hvYZ8

Gloucester Avenue Garden Makeover The Rotary Club of Berwick have been busy creating a new and improved outdoor space on the corner of Gloucester Avenue and Keith Taylor Drive, Berwick. This public-facing area at the rear of the Langmore Centre sees a considerable amount of foot traffic pass by each day. We hope the area will appeal to members of the community as they walk to and from the main street of Berwick, or for the residents of the Old Colonists to have a rest after climbing the hill from their village. We thank the Berwick Rotary for their ongoing support and dedication to our hospitals.

Caregiver profile KELLY LIVINGS Manager Health Information Services, SEM

How long have you been working at SJOG? I started way back when in mid-October 2023. A newbie to the SJG landscape. What was your previous role? I previously worked as a Health Information Manager in Health Information Services within Alfred Health. Do you live locally? Did you grow up in the area? I grew up in Berwick and still live in the surrounding areas in Officer. It has been a bit of dream to be able to work this close to home after so long in the city/Bayside area. Living the dream!! What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a forensic pathologist. I always loved the gory science stuff, just not the copious amounts of study involved. What’s your favourite thing to do on a weekend? If I’m not working on projects around my house or baking, I will be spending time with friends and family or getting out to see some live music. Otherwise, I’ll be on the couch, watching TV, hanging out with my cats.

If you could pick anywhere else in the world to go, where would it be? If travelling, Central and South America or Egypt. I am a huge history/archeology/anthropology buff so anything with an ancient culture and architecture would be my go to. If holidaying, probably somewhere warm with a swim up bar where I could relax. What’s your favourite season? I would have to say, Spring!! The season of rebirth and new beginnings, not to mention perfectly sunny 25 degree days. Least favourite part of this season is swooping season. Have you ever met anyone famous? I have meet a few famous musicians over the years. Local and international. What show are you currently binge-watching or book you are reading? Currently re-binge watching The Witcher and I never miss any version of The Great *whatever county* Bake Off. What skill do you think you could improve on? I am not the best at public speaking, too much stage fright. Much better one on one or in a small group. What is something you’re really bad at? Karaoke!! But isn’t it always way more fun when you’re no good at it!?

Are you an introvert or an extrovert? I would say I’m more like an ambivert, that is, an extroverted introvert. Little from column A, little from column B!

Who do you look up to? That would have to be my mum. She has taught me so much in life, as well as professionally (I’m a second generation HIM)

Do you play an instrument? If not, what would you like to learn to play? I do love music but unfortunately do not play an instrument. I think if I was to learn anything it would be the piano.

Morning person or night-owl? Morning person during the week and a night owl on the weekends. Nothing like balance.

What has been your favourite holiday? I spent 6 weeks travelling around Europe on a group tour and made some amazing friends, some of which have become like family. So many beautiful places that I don’t think I could pick just one as a favourite.

What was your first paying job? I was a casual relieving clerk (ward, admissions and outpatients). Started in hospitals and haven’t left. What do you love most about your job/workplace? It’s such a welcoming and supportive environment. Plus the commute isn’t too bad either!

T O N Y H O WA R T H AWA R D for leadership in health, safety and wellbeing. The 2023 winners of the SJGHC Tony Howarth Awards for Leadership in Health, Safety and Wellbeing were officially recognised during November. The winners were congratulated by Board Chair Hon Kerry Sanderson AC CVO, Group CEO Bryan Pyne and the St John of God Health Care Board members. We are especially proud of Berwick caregiver, Emily Pascua, Food Services Assistant who was the winner of the Most Outstanding Health and Safety Representative award for her work in reducing and preventing slips and trips in the kitchen. ‘We had a cluster of incidents in the catering department with caregivers slipping in water, sometimes on a piece of food...we had been doing some investigations and trying to come up with some solutions,” said Catherine Campbell, SEM Occupational Health and Safety Manager. Emily took initiative, stepped up and worked with Catherine to create a form for caregivers which encouraged them to think about the type of footwear they were wearing in the kitchen. They did further research into the importance of anti-slip properties in footwear and Emily developed a checklist for caregivers, assisting them in choosing the safest shoes for work.

Congratulations to all the winners: •

St John of God Bunbury Hospital (Best solution to a work health and safety risk)

Shane Simmonds and Daniel Maloney, from St John of God Accord (Commitment to the prevention of mental injury in the workplace)

Emily Pascua, St John of God Berwick Hospital (Most outstanding Health and Safety Representative)

“Since the introduction of her footwear checklist, we’ve had no slips or trips in the hospital or in the catering department for the last 18 months. Prior to the introduction of this initiative, we’d had 6 in the previous 18 months. It’s a significant improvement in health and safety,” explained Catherine.

St John of God Murdoch Hospital (Leadership Excellence Award)

SEM General Manager, Lisa Norman said, “It takes a fair bit of courage to turn around and say we’ve got this problem, I’ve got these questions that I want to ask and engage with you on, and come up with some solutions. I think Emily did a fantastic job with that.”

The level of commitment to health and safety initiatives from our caregivers is outstanding, and the Board was especially grateful to those who took the time to nominate and recognise exceptional caregivers.

This year’s awards were once again sponsored by HESTA and we thank them for their ongoing support and sponsorship.
