Tales for Tots

(ages 6-24 months with an adult)

Parents and their young children come together in this fun and unique program where you’ll meet other zoo families while enjoying morning refreshments. After the morning mingle, you will embark on an exciting walkabout through the zoo and even meet animals up close! Zoo educators will facilitate parents learning early childhood education techniques to connect families with nature through colors, shapes, and play. Class fee is for one child and one accompanying adult. Additional children require an additional fee. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring older or younger siblings to class.

Stories come to life during each three-part series where toddlers and their adults explore the world of various tales through engaging songs, interactive play, unique crafts, and live animal encounters! This class is designed to be a transitional experience into preschool. Class fee is for one child and one accompanying adult. Additional children require separate registration. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring older or younger siblings to class.

Explore the wild world of biology in these engaging classes geared to meet CA Next Generation Science Standards. Each “edutaining” class includes interactive discussions, inquiry-based activities, a visit from one of our animal ambassadors, and more! Join us for a class full of discovery and awe - great for homeschoolers too!

Soar in the Sky* September 19 (322.2.0412) Flap! Whoosh! Buzz! Sounds like it’s time for lift off! Discover different styles of flight by animals that soar in the sky. Going Through Grass* October 3 (322.2.0413) Come meet some animals with a very green home and explore the ways they like to roam! Down into the plants is where we’ll go for this class – stalking, walking, and hopping through grass!

Wade in the Water* October 17 (322.2.0414) Splish! Splash! Do you like to play in the water? Meet animals that love to swim, dive, and wade in the water, too. Digging in Dirt* November 7 (322.2.0415) Whether it’s sand or soil, digging is fun! No shovels are needed in this class to find out how animals create tunnels and holes! Join us in meeting animals who spend their time digging in dirt. Frolicking on the Farm* November 21 (322.2.0416) It’s just a hop, skip, and a jump to our very own barnyard! Discover how animals move when they frolic on the farm.

Wild Science (ages 4-6)

Through the Trees* September 5 (322.2.0411) Climbing and swinging requires a lot of balance! Learn how these animals get from branch to branch on their trek through the trees.

Series 1: Animals in Motion* September 6, 13, 20 (322.2.0421 series) (322.2.0461 day 1/Sept 6, 322.2.0462 day 2/ Sept 13, 322.2.0463 day 3/Sept 20) Walk, hop, or slither into this adventure to find out about the ways animals move. Do you know what the fastest animal on land is? How does a bird swoop or dive? Join us on an adventure to find the answers to these questions and more! Series 2: Barnyard Buddies* October 4, 11, 18 (322.2.0422 series) (322.2.0464 day 1/Oct 4, 322.2.0465 day 2/Oct 11, 322.2.0466 day 3/Oct 18) Come face to face with Happy Hollow’s barnyard buddies, to learn how animals and people help each other on the farm! Series 3: Hide and Seek* November 1, 8, 15 (322.2.0423 series) (322.2.0467 day 1/Nov 1, 322.2.0468 day 2/Nov 8, 322.2.0469 day 3/Nov 15) Some animals enjoy playing Hide and Seek, just like you! Learn about animals that like to stay hidden, such as playful parrots, camouflaging chameleons, and hibernating hedgehogs.

Riveting Rainforests* October 7 (322.2.0431) Dive into the depths of a tropical rainforest! Explore the unique characteristics of each layer of the rainforest and how the diverse plants and animals that live there work as a team. Dry Deserts* November 4 (322.2.0432) Did you know that deserts are full of wildlife, you just have to know where to look! Join us as we learn about the different deserts of the world and how animals survive the heat. Watery Wetlands* December 2 (322.2.0433) Wetlands can be home to tiny turtles or awesome alligators. Join us as we discover what makes wetlands so special, and learn a little bit about our wetlands right here in California!

Junior Keepers

Flashlight Safari

Does raking, scooping, feeding, enriching, and caring for zoo animals sound exciting to you? Then join our zoo crew! Throughout the year, Junior Keepers explore different aspects of zoo keeping: animal husbandry, enrichment, veterinary care, and more!

These fun family classes are filled with exciting activities, interactive discussions, and live animal encounters for adults and children to enjoy together. Class fee is for one child and one adult. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring younger siblings to class.

Animal Diets* October 14 (322.2.0441) Wild animals have specialized diets, and just because they live at the zoo doesn’t mean that changes! Join us to learn what our animals eat and how the zoo makes sure they stay healthy. Prepare animal meals, and feed a few of our very own animals at Happy Hollow.

Nocturnal Senses * October 13 (322.2.0481), Oct 20 (322.2.0482) or Oct 27 (322.2.0483) Are your senses of sight, smell, hearing and touch good enough to help you get around in the dark? Come visit our nocturnal animals after hours and learn about their extreme senses.

Animal Enrichment * November 11 (322.2.0442) What is enrichment and why is it so important? Answer these questions, while learning how zookeepers make sure animals stay physically fit and mentally active. You’ll also get to make an enrichment item for one of our zoo animals and watch how they interact with it! Animal Training * December 9 (322.2.0443) Do zoo animals do “tricks”? No, but sometimes they are trained to perform natural behaviors! Find out what the difference is, how zookeepers train our animals, and why!

Zooteen Shadow (ages 10-13)

Are you eager to volunteer at the zoo? Our Zooteen Program starts at age 14, but you can get a head start with Zooteen Shadow! Join our young mentors to learn the very same tasks that the zookeepers taught them! You’ll learn valuable skills in this adult-supervised class. Saturdays from 9:00am-1:00pm $47 non-members / $42.30 members Animal Care * October 21 (322.2.0451) NEW ROUTINE! Join our Animal Care Zooteens to help rake the goat yard, then clean our African spurred tortoise habitat and behind-the-scenes parrot night house. We’ll also make enrichment for the parrots! Meet & Greet * November 18 (322.2.0452) Zooteens provide our guests with the opportunity to meet live animal ambassadors up close at the Critter Corner! Join our Meet & Greet Zooteens to learn about our animal ambassadors, talk to the public, and even handle one of our education program animals!

Family Fun

Howl-o-ween Family Sleepover (ages 5+ with an adult)

These fun family classes are filled with exciting activities, interactive discussions, and live animal encounters for adults and children to enjoy together. Class fee is for one child and one adult. Please respect age restrictions and do not bring younger siblings to class.

Be our overnight guest for a howling good time and enjoy the thrill of the zoo after dark. During your adventure, learn the truth about “scary” animals through Halloween-themed activities, games, live animal encounters, and night tours. Your adventure includes Trick-or-Treat stations, a late-night snack, and hot breakfast the next morning that includes pancakes, eggs, bacon, and more! Bring your own tent to tent camp in the Crooked House Meadow, or sleep indoors inside the Learning LODGE classroom. Class fee is for each individual participant. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Please contact the Zoo Education Department if you have any questions regarding registration for this event.

Saturday from 10:00am-12:00pm $26 non-members / $23.40 members Gifts for the Animals* December 16 (322.2.0471) Join us this holiday season to make gifts for the animals! You and your family will learn about the importance of enrichment in zoos and create a holiday-themed enrichment item to give to one of our zoo animals. If you took this class last year, it will be similar, but we will meet and see different animals.

School Break Camps at Happy Hollow! (Ages 5-9) Spend your week off school learning about animals at the zoo! Our camps are filled with interactive educational activities, live animal encounters, zoo tours, nature play, and more! Children attend camps independently, without parents/guardians. Wednesday-Friday 9:00am-4:00pm $147 non-members / $132.30 members Scram or Snooze * December 27-29 (322.2.0401) or January 3-5 (322.2.0402) Do monkeys migrate? Can horses hibernate? Find out how zoo and wild animals weather winter, whether winging away, snoozing through, or adapting to the cold!


REFUND & TRANSFER POLICY Refund and transfer requests need to be made in writing. Refunds and transfers will be given for requests received at least 14 calendar days prior to the start of the program/class. No refunds or transfers will be made for cancellations received by the City less than 14 calendar days prior to the start of the program/class. There will be a $10 refund processing fee for EACH activity. INCLUSION POLICY The City of San Jose’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services encourages and supports the participation of individuals with all ability levels in programs and services.
