FALL/WINTER 2020

Director’s Message Given the broader societal landscape in the United States marred by profound personal trauma and professional struggles emanating from political and economic leaders’ failure to ameliorate the global pandemic, along with entrenched racial injustice, inequalities and racial trauma associated with the murder of “George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, US, and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests across the globe” ( Jaye, 2020), the importance of having transformative leaders occupying positions in P-20 educational institutions is more salient than ever. I am glad to report the SJSU Lurie College of Education Ed.D. Leadership Program has taken several important steps in becoming the leading academic institution for preparing transdisciplinary leaders who are capable of engaging in research to solve educational disparities facing BIPOC and other minoritized learners. First, the program modified its mission and vision to reflect the program's commitment to being the preeminent academic unit for preparing students to eliminate oppression within P-20 schools. Second, several Core Ed.D. faculty members generated new Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) in order to better ensure the program’s assessment effort improves student learning outcomes. Third, the faculty established several core key hallmarks of the program, including its transdisciplinary nature, the option to complete a dissertation through the production of a documentary, the inclusion of global-learning experiences, a focus on social justice, and the support from a graduate writing fellow, in order to increase the amount of socially diverse learners admitted to the program. Fourth, the program supported several initiatives dedicated to eradicating racism in schools and the broader society. For instance, the Core Ed.D. faculty hosted a conversation with Eugene Puryear, who is a longtime journalist and community organizer currently-based in New York City. Mr. Puryear provided essential insights on how the broader Black Liberation Movement holds the power to address questions connected to the role education plays around the struggle for Blacks Lives. Furthermore, Dr. Bettina Love, Associate Professor of Theory & Practice at the University of Georgia, joined over 800 participants, including students and faculty associated with the EdD. Program, to discuss the struggles and the possibilities of committing ourselves to an abolitionist goal of educational freedom and intersectional justice. Fifth, the College of Education and the Ed.D. program joined together to establish the first two fellowships for students who are admitted to the program in June 2021. The first fellowship engages in research that addresses and advances equitable outcomes for students in foster care and students experiencing homelessness from the K-12 population. The second fellowship is dedicated to addressing current educational data policies that leave youth data vulnerable to exploitation and to propose and enact policies that would protect youth from data harms from a variety of emerging technologies. Sincerely, Brad Bradley J. Porfilio

Kristi Grasty As a course project for EDD 520: Organizational Behavior and Change, taught by Dr. Bob Gliner, Kristi led the creation of "A Conversation About Race," a four-part series that may be viewed on YouTube. On September 25, 2020, student leaders and staff from Los Gatos High School, Saratoga High School, and San Jose State University met at the Los Gatos Town Council Chambers and engaged in open dialogue about race. This conversation series includes Kevina Brown, a Community Relations Specialist in SJSU's housing department and fellow cohort member in the Ed.D. program, as well as SJSU graduate Lindsay Harris, who currently works at Saratoga High School. Kristi elaborates on the series: “My hope is that this conversation series, featuring high school students and adults, inspires others to create brave spaces for open, civil discourse—to listen and learn respectfully from one another so that we can build greater understanding and empathy and create an inclusive culture that respects the dignity of all.” This video was aired to all students in the Los GatosSaratoga High School District on November 4, 2020.
