by Janet Spencer On March 16, 1966, Neil Armstrong and David Scott launched into orbit in Gemini 8. The space flight was the first instance of a catastrophic failure nearly claiming the lives of the astronauts. Come along with Tidbits as we ride along with astronauts! NEAR CATASTROPHE Neil Armstrong and David Scott were orbiting in Gemini 8. Their mission was to dock with a craft already orbiting. After completing the first space docking in history, a short circuit set off a rocket booster, sending the Gemini 8 into an uncontrollable spin, at one revolution per minute. They worked to stabilize the craft. Armstrong struggled to regain control by using the retro rockets, wasting precious re-entry fuel. Fearing an explosion, Ground Control immediately ordered an emergency splashdown. Would our astronauts survive? ABC interrupted a new TV show to give a bulletin. The interrupted TV show was a campy TV version of a popular comic book hero, who fought crime by employing intellect and detective skills combined with science and technology. A thousand angry calls flooded operators complaining of the interruption and insisting that the channel be returned to the regularly scheduled program. What was the spell-binding action and adventure show that viewers couldn’t stand to miss? Answer on page 3.

SOLUTIONS TO HELP BUSINESSES

Don’t Toss Food Before It’s Time We throw away a lot of food -- both at the retail level and at home -- for a lot of reasons. On the retail level, food can be discarded because of damage (dented cans), overstocking, unpurchased holiday foods, spillage and blemished foods. At home, we throw away food for even more reasons, including spillage, lack of knowledge about preparation and portion sizes, the aging of fruits and vegetables, uneaten holiday foods and confusion over “use by” versus “best before” versus “sell by” dates on packaging. (Unfortunately there are no federal regulations regarding the date information except on infant formula. Some states require date information, but it’s not uniform.) The Department of Agriculture has completed a major study on food loss, and it has come to some startling conclusions about how much food we throw away in one year. On the consumer level: fresh fruit, 9.5 billion pounds; fresh vegetables, 12.8 billion pounds; poultry, 3.9 billion pounds; eggs, 2.1 billion pounds; fish, 1.5 billion pounds; milk, 10.5 billion pounds. Per individual, that means: fresh fruit, 40 pounds; fresh vegetables, 59 pounds; poultry, 13 pounds; eggs, 7 pounds; fish, 5 pounds; milk, 34 pounds. When it comes to the calorie value of food that’s thrown away, two studies differ in their conclusions. One says it’s the equivalent of 789 calories per day. The other puts it at 1,400 calories per day. It’s likely that much food is thrown away simply because of the confusion over the dates. The Department of Agriculture explains: ¥ Sell-by date -- How long the store can display the product for sale. ¥ Best if used by (or before) -- Use before this day for best flavor or quality. ¥ Use by date -- The last date recommended to use the product while at the peak of quality. Cans: Canned foods are safe as long as they aren’t exposed to temperatures below freezing or above 90 degrees F, and don’t have dents, rust or bulges. (Another opinion: Go by the dates on the can.) Eggs: Store in the coldest part of the refrigerator, not the door. Use within three to five weeks of purchase. They’re safe to use after the “sell-by” date. For more information, look for Food Product Dating on the Department of Agriculture website: www.fsis.usda.gov. STRONG DELUSION Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way (Psalm 119:104). Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth (John 17:17). And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie; That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thessalonians 10-12). The most famous line that came out of the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission is, “Houston, we have a problem.” However, the actual quote was, “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” which was uttered by Pilot Jack Swigert to Ground Control. Commander James Lovell then echoed: “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” None of the three men aboard the Apollo 13 ever went into space again.

On January 13, 1920, the New York Times ridiculed Professor Robert Goddard, who pioneered rocket science, because they felt a rocket could never fly in the vacuum of outer space. “He seems only to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools,” said the article. Nearly 50 years later, as Apollo 11 zoomed towards the moon, the paper printed a retraction: “It is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum. The Times regrets the error.”

ASTRONAUT FACTS • The most expensive colds in history occurred on Feb. 27, 1969, on the night before a flight to orbit earth. All three of the Apollo 9 crew came down with colds, and NASA postponed the launch at a cost of $500,000. This was the first time that illness, rather than weather or technicalities, caused a delay. The three men recovered in a week and the launch went up. •

Neil Armstrong reportedly listened to Muzak on the way to the moon.

• Astronauts on their way to the moon 238,857 miles (384,403 km) away travelled at a peak of 24,679 mph (39,717 km/hr). The distance can be traversed in 60 to 70 hours. If you were to drive to the moon in your car at 70 mph (112 km/hr) it would take you 135 days to get there. Today an astronaut can reach the moon in less time than it took a stagecoach to travel the length of Great Britain.

• News commentator Walter Cronkite was generally never at a loss for words. The one time in his career when he could think up not a single comment was during the first moon landing when he was overwhelmed. “I just went blank,” Cronkite explained. • Astronaut Alfred Worden of the Apollo 15 mission stayed on board the command module while David Scott and James Irwin explored the surface of the moon in 1971. As he orbited the moon, he was 2,234 miles (3,595 km) away from his fellow astronauts, and nearly a quarter million miles (384,403 km) away from Earth. This guaranteed him a spot in the Book of World Records for being the most isolated human being in history.

Dog and Cat Shelter Pet of the Week Popeye is a two-year-old black and white pit bull mix. He is very active and will need a tall fence and people who are home most of the time or take him with them, since he enjoys climbing and jumping fences to get to people. He loves all ages of people and enjoys playing with toys.

ASTRONAUT FACTS (continued)

• Each Apollo space suit was made of over 1,000 individual parts and cost around $100,000 in 1968 dollars. The space suits worn by astronauts on the moon landings weighed 180 lbs. (81 kg) on earth, but only 30 lbs. (13 kg) on the moon, which has one-sixth the gravity. Because the moon suits were bulky, astronauts found it easier to hop than to walk. • Moon-walker James Irwin of Apollo 15 left his moon jacket on the moon in order to lighten the load on the return trip home. However, he cut out and kept the fabric NASA nametag before abandoning the suit. The six-inch by twelve-inch nametag, dirty and embedded with moon dust from Irwin’s three moon walks, later sold at auction for $310,500.

Dog Can’t Resist Jumping on People DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Bailey” is about a year and a half old, and he has always gotten very excited around the kids and guests, and jumps up to paw at them. The kids love to play with him, which encourages him to jump up more. He is otherwise very lovable. How can I stop this behavior? -- Sign me “Muddy Shirt” in Madison, Wis. DEAR MUDDY SHIRT: Jumping up is a very common behavior in dogs. The key here is to teach Bailey that it isn’t acceptable. How? Well, yelling or getting excited yourself when Bailey jumps up will likely do nothing, or even make the problem worse. Pushing Bailey away or swatting his nose isn’t helpful, either. Instead, try the “I’m not interacting with you” method. When Bailey starts to jump up (such as when you come home) stay calm, but look away and fold your arms. Say “off!” in a strong but calm voice. Turn your back on him if need be. Now -- this is important -- as soon as Bailey stops the behavior, reward him by looking at him and calmly petting him. If he starts to jump again (and he will), repeat the steps. Basic obedience training plays a key role here. Every day, teach Bailey to sit, stay, lie down, come and heel. When he begins to jump or get hyper, use the non-interaction method, and as soon as he stops jumping, say “sit.” When he obeys you, reward him with calm petting. What you’re teaching Bailey is that he will not get the attention he craves if he behaves a certain way (jumping). Make sure to teach your kids to do the same. There are lots of resources and methods to address jumping up, such as the ASPCA’s pet-care section. Keep researching, or contact a professional trainer to help. Send your questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

The maiden name of Buzz Aldrin’s mom was Moon. MOON FACTS • The temperature on the moon reaches 243 F. in the sun and drops to 261 below zero in the darkness of the lunar night. That’s a 500 degree difference between day and night. • Because there is no atmosphere, there is also no sound. When astronauts broke rocks with hammers, they operated in complete silence. • The surface speed record on the Moon is 11.2 mph (17 km/hr) set by the Apollo 16 lunar rover on a slightly downhill slope which covered about 16 miles (25 km).

IT’S A FACT A bookie in London named David Thelfall bet $24 in 1964 that a man would walk on the moon by 1971. The odds were 1,000 to 1. When the lunar module landed, he was awarded a check for $24,000 on national TV.

Prospector spacecraft. • The craft was deliberately crash landed on the moon on July 31, 1999 after orbiting the moon for Affordable Building & Design 18 months as it collected data. The crash was designed to help scientists determine whether there is any water on the moon or not, so it was designed to crash where water would most likely be found: in the bottom of a deep crater at the moon’s pole, a place where sunlight never reaches and where water would forever remain ice. • The crash kicked up a huge cloud of debris which was analyzed for the presence of water. The crash also scattered the ashes of Eugene Shoemaker across the surface of the place he most wanted to visit in his life. Since then, further studies have proven the presence of water ice in deep craters at the poles.
