The Hawk Will Never Die!

2012 SEASON OUTLOOK There
 will
 be
 a
 distinctly
 different
 look
 to
 the
 Saint Joseph’s
 men’s
 lacrosse
 team
 when
 it
 takes
 the
 field
 in
 2012 with
an
entirely
new
coaching
staff.
Led
by
head
coach
Taylor Wray,
 a
 former
 Defensive
 Player
 of
 the
 Year
 in
 the
 National Lacrosse
League,
the
Hawks
will
look
to
rebound
after
a
tough first
 season
 in
 the
 Colonial
 Athletic
 Association.
 Joining
 Wray are
 assistants
 and
 former
 college
 teammates
 from
 Duke University,
Dan
Keating and
Michael
Keating.
 Wray
is
revved
up
to
start
the
season,
saying,
“Our
team
is excited
and
eager
to
get
2012
underway.
They
have
put
a
ton of
work
in
this
off‐season
and
they
can't
wait
for
the
real
com‐ petition
 to
 begin.”
 This
 young
 and
 determined
 group
 is
 com‐ peting
in
a
conference
that
saw
three
teams
ranked
in
the
final USILA
poll
in
2011.
 Leading
 the
 attack
 for
 the
 Hawks
 this
 season
 will
 be sophomore Ryan
McGee and
junior
Kyle
Williams.
McGee
has emerged
as
a
leader
and
a
hard
worker
after
a
strong
off‐sea‐ son,
competing
everyday
and
trying
to
make
this
squad
better. The
rangy
left‐handed
attackman
Williams,
returns
for
his
jun‐ ior
season
after
leading
the
Hawks
in
scoring
with
26
points
on 17
goals
and
nine
assists. The
 third
 spot
 in
 the
 attacking
 zone
 is
 still
 up
 for
 grabs between
senior
Augustus
Quinzani,
junior
Kyle
Mahoney and freshman
Matt
Sarcona.
Quinzani
is
making
the
move
from
the midfield
to
attack
as
he
netted
three
goals
and
added
an
assist in
 2011.
 Mahoney
 shined
 during
 the
 fall
 scrimmages
 as
 he came
 off
 a
 strong
 year
 scoring
 eight
 goals.
 Sarcona,
 a Northport,
 N.Y.
 native,
 has
 impressed
 the
 coaches
 with
 his work
ethic
and
skill
set,
as
he
brings
105
goals
and
45
assists from
his
high
school
career
at
Northport
to
Hawk
Hill. In
 the
 midfield,
 senior
 Bobby
 Hurley has
 showcased his
speed
throughout
his
career
and
worked
himself
into
a
reli‐ able
midfielder.
A
gifted
two‐way
middie,
sophomore
Johnny Simanski is
ready
to
take
on
a
bigger
role
in
2012
with
his
open field
speed.
Freshmen
Robert
Watts and
Josh
Cavanaugh
have stood
out
with
their
athletic
play
and
look
to
earn
key
minutes on
the
field. According
to
Wray,
the
face‐off
spot
is
still
up
in
the
air
as senior
Chris
Jenkins returns
as
the
top
runner
although
he
has been
 battling
 an
 injury
 this
 off‐season.
 Sophomores
 Will Abbott and
Bill
Annesley have
been
taking
their
share
of
draws with
the
injury
to
Jenkins.
Ted
Hospodar,
the
junior
long
pole, has
been
in
the
mix
taking
reps
during
practice
as
well. LSM
Justin
Rogers is
a
competitor
who
is
vocal
and
good off
the
ground.
Hospodar
and
freshman
Rich
O’Neill will
also compete
and
push
for
time
at
LSM.
 “The
 team’s
 leadership
 lies
 in
 senior
 SSDM’s
 Pat
 Sinnott and
Daniel
Lieb,
both
gritty,
athletic
players”
said
Wray.
“They have
spent
a
lot
of
time
working
to
perfect
their
games
on
the field
and
in
the
gym.” On
the
defensive
end,
senior
Matt
Germain and
fresh‐ man
 Will
 Farrell are
 tall,
 rangy
 defensemen
 who
 can
 handle the
 ball
 and
 push
 in
 transition.
 Senior
 Colin
 Roemer
 can
 be counted
 on
 for
 his
 fundamentally
 sound
 position
 play
 as
 he looks
to
be
a
key
factor
in
the
success
this
season.

The
tough, physical
 play
 of
 junior
 Bill
 Bonner and
 stay
 at‐home
 style
 of defense
 will
 have
 him
 earning
 time
 on
 the
 field,
 while
 fresh‐ man
Kevin
Barrow will
earn
some
time
valuable
time
as
well.

 In
 net,
 Griffin
 Ferrigan has
 shown
 a
 command
 over
 the defense
entering
his
senior
season.
Ferrigan
needs
24
saves
to move
 into
 sixth
 place
 on
 the
 all‐time
 saves
 list
 with
 233.

Freshman
 Dustin
 Keen was
 an
 All‐American
 at
 Downingtown West
high
school
and
sophomore
Pat
Kurowski impressed
at the
HEADstrong
fall
ball
event,
showing
he
can
be
counted
on between
the
pipes. “The
coaching
staff
has
done
a
tremendous
job
of
prepar‐ ing
 the
 team
 and
 laying
 the
 foundation
 for
 future
 success,” says
Wray.
“This
team
has
worked
hard
in
the
off‐season,
mak‐ ing
sure
all
the
little
things
are
done
right.” The
2012
slate
is
a
challenging
one,
featuring
seven
home games
 and
 five
 against
 USILA
 top
 20
 teams
 and
 one
 more receiving
votes.
As
the
Hawks
gear
up
for
their
second
season in
the
Colonial
Athletic
Association,
they
realize
they
will
face some
of
the
toughest
competition
in
Division
1.
 “We
feel
that
our
2012
schedule
is
going
to
be
extremely competitive;
 seven
 home
 games,
 eight
 on
 the
 road,”
 said Wray.
“We
start
and
finish
the
season
at
home,
which
is
great. Our
 conference
 schedule
 is
 as
 tough
 as
 ever
 with
 five
 teams ranked
in
the
top
20.
We
have
great
out‐of‐conference
rivalries already
 established
 and
 we
 are
 excited
 to
 have
 added
 three more
 games
 to
 the
 schedule
 to
 play
 a
 full
 15
 regular
 season slate
of
games,”
Wray
continued.
”We
have
two
very
difficult stretches
 of
 three
 weekends
 on
 the
 road,
 which
 will
 test
 our ability
 to
 deal
 with
 adversity
 and
 certainly
 help
 us
 build
 our identity
 along
 the
 way.
 In
 Division
 1
 lacrosse
 every
 game
 is going
to
be
a
battle,
our
team
has
worked
very
hard
to
prepare for
 the
 upcoming
 season
 and
 we
 look
 forward
 to
 the
 chal‐ lenges
ahead." For
the
second
consecutive
season,
Saint
Joseph’s
will
play Lehigh
 to
 kick
 off
 the
 season,
 as
 the
 Mountain
 Hawks
 visit Finnesey
Field
on
Saturday,
February
11.
 The
men
will
then
hit
the
road
for
their
next
three
contests as
they
visit
Bryant
on
February
18,
which
is
receiving
votes
in the
USILA
top
20
poll.

The
Bulldogs
were
too
much
too
much to
handle
for
the
Hawks
last
season
when
they
handed
SJU
its second
loss
of
the
year. They
will
then
visit
VMI
on
February
25,
a
team
that
they have
an
all‐time
record
of
7‐4
against
and
won
their
last
two meetings.
 Saint
 Joseph’s
 will
 open
 up
 the
 month
 of
 March against
Wagner
on
the
3rd
as
they
have
an
all‐time
record
of 11‐0
versus
the
Seahawks.

 Drexel
(20)
will
come
to
Finnesey
on
March
6,
to
open
up conference
 play
 and
 a
 four
 game
 home
 stand
 for
 SJU.
 Just three
days
apart
from
each
other,
Brown
will
visit
on
March
10, and
Quinnipiac
will
come
to
Hawk
Hill
for
a
March
13
meeting, the
 first
 since
 2007.
 Conference
 and
 instate
 opponent
 Penn State
(17),
will
come
close
out
the
home
stand
on
March
24.
In four
all‐time
meetings,
the
Hawks
have
yet
to
beat
the
Nittany Lions.
 The
toughest
part
of
the
schedule
follows
when
the
Hawks go
 on
 the
 road
 to
 face
 three
 ranked
 opponents
 in Massachusetts
 (11),
 Hofstra
 (14)
 and
 Delaware
 (19).
 The Hawks
 will
 try
 to
 gain
 some
 redemption
 from
 last
 season
 as they
dropped
each
game
to
these
quality
programs.
They
will then
 return
 home
 to
 end
 the
 stretch
 of
 ranked
 competition against
city
rival
Penn
(15)
on
April
17. After
Penn,
SJU
will
take
its
longest
trip
of
the
season
when it
travels
to
Macon,
Ga.,
to
face‐off
against
Mercer
before
trav‐ eling
back
up
to
Poughkeepsie,
N.Y.
just
three
days
later
to
take on
Marist.

 Saint
Joseph’s
will
play
host
to
Towson
when
it
closes
out the
regular
season
for
Senior
Day
on
Saturday,
April
28.

One
of
the
most
famous
mascots
in
college
sports,
the
Saint
Joseph's
Hawk
has
been
flapping its
wings
for
56
years. The
Hawk,
which
celebrated
its
golden
anniversary
in
2005‐06,
is
best
known
for
staying
in constant
motion
by
flapping
its
wings
throughout
every
basketball
game
and
representing
the Saint
Joseph's
motto,
"The
Hawk
Will
Never
Die."
 Saint
Joseph’s
athletic
teams
have
been
recognized
with
the
nickname
“Hawks”
since
1929. At
that
time,
the
school’s
yearbook
editor
initiated
a
contest
among
the
student
body
for
a
sym‐ bol.

More
than
100
submissions
were
narrowed,
with
“Hawks”
winning
out
over
“Grenadiers”
by a
slim
margin.

The
name
was
appropriate
because
it
typified
“the
fighting
spirit
of
our
crimson and
 gray
 athletes
 and
 it
 is
 suggestive
 of
 the
 aerial
 attack
 which
 has
 made
 our
 football
 team famous.”
Football,
ironically,
was
discontinued
at
SJU
following
the
1939
season. The
Hawk
mascot
has
garnered
numerous
accolades
in
its
56‐year
history.
It
has
been
select‐ ed
as
the
nation’s
top
mascot
by
The
Sporting
News,
Sports
Illustrated,
Sports

for
Kids, Street
&
Smith’s

Yearbook,
ESPN

Basketball magazine
and
was
nominated
for the

in
2008. Saint Joseph’s University

FINNESEY FIELD Finnesey
 Field,
 currently
 in its
 83rd
 year,
 has
 been
 home
 to 10
 different
 varsity
 squads
 at Saint
 Joseph’s.
 Opened
 in
 1929 as
 home
 to
 the
 SJU
 football squad,
 the
 field
 has
 undergone numerous
 changes
 over
 the years
and
has
been
home
to
over a
 thousand
 SJU
 varsity
 games, matches
and
track
meets.
 The
 most
 recent
 upgrade occurred
 in
 2008
 when
 the AstroTurf,
laid
down
in
2001,
was replaced
 with
 new,
 state‐of‐the‐ art
TigerTurf.
 Home
 to
 the
 men’s
 and women’s
 lacrosse
 teams,
 men’s and
 women’s
 soccer
 teams,
 the field
 has
 seen
 other
 modifica‐ tions
 since
 its
 inception
in
1929. The
 prospect
 of
 a
 70,000‐seat bowled
stadium
for
football
was dashed
 when
 the
 sport
 was
 dis‐ continued
following
the
1939
season.

 Baseball
 re‐occupied
 the
 space
 in
 1947,
 calling
 Finnesey home
until
1959.

Saint
Joseph’s
men’s
soccer
began
in
1958
and played
every
season
but
one
(1960)
at
Finnesey.
In
1960,
the
orig‐ inal
 grandstand,
 as
 well
 as
 the
 hillside
 seating
 near
 Overbrook Avenue,
were
eliminated
as
Villiger
(now
Post)
Hall
and
the
Bluett Theatre
were
built.

In
the
process
of
the
1960
construction,
the field’s
elevation
was
raised
five
feet
to
its
current
location. In
1990,
artificial
turf
replaced
the
grass,
making
Finnesey
a true
multi‐purpose
facility.

In
1994
the
installation
of
lights
fur‐ thered
the
use
of
the
grounds,
while
new
bleachers
in
2003
on the
hill
next
to
Mandeville
Hall
were
another
touch
of
renovation
 to
a
historic
stadium.

FINNESEY
FIELD

THE UNIVERSITY

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Founded
 in
 1851,
 Saint
 Joseph’s
 is
 an independent,
 Catholic,
 Jesuit
 university teaching
 disciplined
 reasoning,
 effective communication
and
a
love
of
learning.
From Willings
Alley
in
Old
City
Philadelphia
to
Stiles Street
 in
 North
 Philadelphia
 to
 its
 current location
on
City
Avenue,
Saint
Joseph’s
has continued
 to
 grow
 and
 change
 with
 the times.
 The
 University
 combines
 the
 Jesuit tradition
of
academic
excellence,
a
history
of service
and
an
ideal
campus
location
to
pro‐ duce
successful
students
who
strive
to
make a
good
world
even
better.
 Full‐time,
 undergraduate
 day
 enroll‐ ment
 comprises
 approximately
 4,600
 stu‐ dents.
Graduate,
evening
and
executive
pro‐ grams
push
total
enrollment
to
more
than 8,000
students. THE
JESUIT
TRADITION
OF
ACADEMIC
 EXCELLENCE Saint
 Joseph’s
 nationally‐recognized academic
reputation
is
confirmed
by
ongo‐ ing
acknowledgment
in
Barron’s,
U.S.
News &
World
Report
and
Peterson’s.
The
Jesuit tradition
of
intellectual
inquiry
and
personal concern
manifests
itself
in
small,
challenging
class‐ es
taught
by
a
caring
faculty.

Graduate
assistants do
not
teach,
so
undergraduates
can
be
sure
they are
receiving
the
very
best
educational
experience from
 trained
 experts.
 One‐on‐one
 interaction between
students
and
faculty
is
a
reality
at
Saint Joseph’s. A
solid
liberal
arts
curriculum
provides
across‐ the‐board
learning
for
every
student.

Supporting that
 curriculum
 are
 comprehensive
 academic majors
and
learning
facilities.

The
result
is
a
broad education
 that
 prepares
 students
 not
 only
 for employment
 and
 graduate
 school,
 but
 for
 life itself. In
the
fall
of
1998,
SJU
opened
the
$25
million Owen
A.
Mandeville
Hall,
which
houses
the
Erivan K.
Haub
School
of
Business,
the
Center
for
Food Marketing
and
the
region's
first
"Teletorium"
and "Moot
 Boardrooms."
 An
 87,000‐square‐foot international
academic
center
featuring
state‐of‐ the‐art
distance
learning
technology,
it
is
located near
the
corner
of
54th
Street
and
City
Avenue. A
HISTORY
OF
SERVICE The
students
of
Saint
Joseph’s
University
are dedicated
to
making
today’s
world
even
better.
A natural
 spirit
 of
 volunteerism
 has
 enabled
 the University’s
 community
 service
 programs
 to become
the
most
popular
extracurricular
activities on
campus.

In
addition,
a
Service
Learning
pro‐ gram
allows
students
to
receive
academic
credit for
their
work
outside
the
classroom.

SJU
 offers
 local,
 national
 and
 international opportunities
 for
 student
 service.
 From
 North Philadelphia
to
Camden,
N.J.;
from
New
Orleans to
the
Appalachian
Mountains,
Saint
Joseph’s
stu‐ dents
embrace
the
Jesuit
mission
of
serving
those in
need.

The
Thanksgiving
Dinner
Dance
for
area senior
citizens
and
the
Hand‐in‐Hand
Festival
for the
 handicapped
 are
 two
 annual
 student‐run events
that
draw
thousands
of
special
visitors
to campus
for
fun
and
friendship. IDEAL
CAMPUS
LOCATION SJU’s
City
Avenue
location
combines
the
best of
dynamic
Philadelphia
with
the
suburban,
resi‐ dential
 setting
 of
 the
 elegant
 Main
 Line.

 Saint Joseph’s
65
acres
span
two
counties,
allowing
stu‐ dents
 to
 literally
 enjoy
 the
 best
 of
 both
 worlds. The
 city
 of
 Philadelphia,
 with
 its
 tremendous wealth
 of
 historical,
 cultural,
 social
 and
 athletic attractions,
 is
 easily
 accessible,
 while
 the
 safety, serenity
and
greenery
of
a
suburban
campus
are right
at
hand. The
friendly
atmosphere
and
close‐knit
cam‐ pus
ensure
that
students
don’t
get
lost
in
either the
literal
or
the
figurative
sense
at
Saint
Joseph’s. Expanded
library,
computer
and
athletic
facilities add
a
big‐time
“feel”
to
this
growing
university. SUCCESSFUL
STUDENTS Men
 and
 women
 leave
 Saint
 Joseph’s
 pre‐ pared.
The
University
boasts
an
excellent
record
of placing
its
graduates
in
first‐time
jobs,
profession‐

al
schools
and
other
advanced
degree
programs. Part‐time
work
and
internships
provide
real‐world experiences,
 the
 kind
 which
 delight
 future employers.
 And
 with
 its
 many
 diverse
 student organizations,
SJU
offers
ample
opportunities
to assume
leadership
positions. An
 extensive
 on‐campus
 recruitment
 pro‐ gram
provides
graduates
with
a
head
start
in
their employment
search.

Regular
meetings
with
facul‐ ty
advisors,
along
with
advisory
programs
in
the health
professions
and
in
pre‐law,
assist
students who
wish
to
further
their
schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s
 Philadelphia
 location
 gives
 students access
 to
 two
 worlds.
 The
 campus
 resembles
 a park,
 surrounded
 by
 the
 stately
 homes
 of Philadelphia’s
historic
Main
Line
suburbs.

Yet
stu‐ dents
have
access
to
the
cultural,
commercial
and recreational
activities
of
downtown
Philadelphia
‐ –
only
a
short
ride
away.
SJU
students
take
fre‐ quent
 advantage
 of
 the
 artistic
 and
 cultural resources
 Philadelphia
 offers,
 as
 well.
 They
 visit the
Philadelphia
Museum
of
Art;
the
Pennsylvania Academy
 of
 the
 Fine
 Arts;
 the
 Franklin
 Institute Science
Museum;
the
Academy
of
Music,
which houses
 ballet
 and
 opera;
 and
 the
 new
 Kimmel Center,
 home
 to
 the
 Philadelphia
 Orchestra.
 In addition,
 SJU
 students
 enjoy
 rooting
 for Philadelphia’s
teams
in
the
four
major
profession‐ al
sports
leagues.
