The Freshman 4 will be comprised of newcomers Chris Garvey, Tom Garry, Matt Johnson, Nick Hoell and coxswain Brandon Ciccone. “I want our rowers to be training as hard as they can and working for that ultimate goal of putting up good results at the Dad Vail, and all the while, having a good time doing it,” said Goettner. The Hawks will continue to race a challenging schedule again in 2010-11. The Murphy Cup (March 26) and Bergen Cup (April 30) will be contested on the Schuylkill River, along with the prestigious Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta on May 1314. Saint Joseph’s will again host the Jesuit Invitational (March 19) and will compete in the Knecht Cup (April 9-10), both on Cooper River. The Hawks will also face a top-notch field at the SIRA Regatta in Tennessee and have added a race with Williams and Marietta on the Cooper River to the schedule.

The Hawk Will Never Die!

The Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing team has a new look in 2010-11, with former assistant coach Dan Goettner taking over the program as interim head coach. Goettner has been on staff with the Hawks since 200304 and has had great success in the last six years as coach of the freshman team. For the 2010-11 campaign, he has brought in two accomplished former collegiate rowers - Alex Berlin from Colorado and Matt Carmody from California - to join the staff that consists of former Hawk standouts Alex DiBiasi and Ryan Bonner. The Hawks are expected to put together a Varsity 8 that has two seniors, Dan Gallagher and Tim Strybuc, along with juniors Tyler Huck, Tom Kresz, Justin Gentile, Brandon Hanna and cox Devon Teichman. Sophomore Jamal Anderson, who was a Dad Vail gold medalist last season in the Freshman 8, will join the crew while freshman Brendan Courtney is expected to row for the Hawks’ top boat. Seniors Rich Appell and Steve Dutcher will lead the Second Varsity 8. Joining that boat will be junior Mike Sheehan and sophomores Chris Higgins, Marc Ioli, Patrick Kenney, John Lesko, Michael Walsh and Reid Strait (cox). Senior Ryan Pawling will be joined by classmates Michael Gibel and Billy McKenzie (cox) in the Lightweight 4, along with junior Matt Benedetto and sophomore Chris Young.

GILLIN BOATHOUSE

The Robert M. Gillin, Jr. Boathouse was dedicated in June 2002 as the home of the Saint Joseph’s University men’s and women’s rowing teams. The 15,540 square foot state-of-the-art boathouse includes four heated boat bays with capacity for 42 eights, 14 fours/quads, and 14 small boats. The boathouse sits on 20,381 square feet of land at the 1,000meter mark of the famed Schuylkill River race course. The boathouse serves as SJU’s home base for all of its home regattas, including the Dad Vail Regatta, Murphy Cup, and various dual races. The 750-square foot deck is a perfect viewing area for families, fans, and alumni. The second floor of the boathouse includes locker rooms, showers, etc as well as a large common area for ergs, team meetings, and video review. The Gillin Boat Club joined the Schuylkill Navy on September 20, 2004, by unanimous vote of the delegates of the Schuylkill Navy's 10 member clubs. In addition to serving as the home of Hawk rowing, the Gillin Boathouse also hosts several summer camps including the Saint Joseph’s University/Fairmount Park Commission's Community Rowing DIRECTIONS TO GILLIN BOATHOUSE (2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia) Program. The first floor: • 8,860 square feet • four bays • access to the floating dock • adjoining 270 square foot veranda The second floor: • 6,680 square feet • common areas for meeting and out-of-water instruction • wireless internet / satellite television • locker and bathroom facilities • 750 square foot second-floor deck • large windows • elevator Fairmount Park Community Rowing Program In addition to serving as the home of Hawk rowing, the Gillin Boathouse also hosts the Fairmount Park Commission's Community Rowing Program. The first step in a long-term partnership between the University and the Fairmount Park Commission, the program is designed to provide an experience for youth in the city of Philadelphia who have not had the opportunity to experience the sport of rowing.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 55 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die!" Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2009-10 REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing team battled injuries and ensuing lineup changes through 2009-10, but finished up strong, with a top-notch performance at the Abderdeen Dad Vail Regatta. The Hawks garnered four medals in the regatta - including a gold in the Freshman 8. SJU also took second in the Freshman Lightweight 8 and third in both the Lightweight 8 and Lightweight 4. The Hawks finished second in the team standings to Delaware, but combined with the Saint Joseph’s women’s team to win the Bratton Trophy, which signifies the overall points champion. For the Varsity 8, the Dad Vail was the first event in which they raced with their early-season lineup as Alex Pugh returned from an injury. The Hawks turned in a solid performance winning the Petite Final. The Hawks started off the year with a few wins at the Jesuit Invitational, and teamed with the women’s crew to capture the Cannonball Trophy as the overall points winner. The Varsity 8 captured gold, which was its first since 1999, and also grabbed a silver as the Hawks rowed two crews. The Freshman 8 and Freshman 4 also rowed to victory in their first collegiate sprint races. At the Murphy Cup on the Schuylkill, SJU took first in the Varsity 8 Petite Final, second in the Lightweight 8 and fifth in the Second V8. The Hawks faced cold and windy conditions and a revamped lineup at the Knecht Cup. SJU made the Petite Final in both the Pairs and V8, and placed second and fifth, respectively. The Second V4 placed fifth and the Freshman 8 was sixth in the Grand Finals. At the SIRA Regatta, the Freshman 8 again showed its speed and consistency and garnered a silver medal. The V8 advanced to a strong semifinal and just missed the Grand Final, taking fourth place in the Petite Final. The Second Varsity 8 finished second in the Petite Final. SJU returned home to the Bergen Cup as the Freshman 8 took home the city title. The V8 and Second V8 each placed third with the Varsity 4 earning second. Saint Joseph’s sent one boat to the IRA Championships and the Varsity 4 placed fourth in the Third Final. This season saw the Hawks’ Lightweights compete in the EARC for the first time. SJU had mixed results but gained a great deal of experience competing against the top-notch sprint teams. The Hawks ended the year in the Eastern Sprints, with the LV8 and LF8 each clocking the fastest times of those crews that advanced to the Petite Finals and each earning fifth-place finishes.

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Although not the oldest sport at Saint Joseph’s University, the Hawk rowing program has established itself as arguably one of the most successful in the school’s long and storied athletics history. Making its mark on Philadelphia’s famed Schuylkill River since 1954, SJU rowing celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003-04. First emerging as a club sport in 1954, rowing received official varsity status in 1959 and immediate respect when Al Rosenberg was named head coach. Rosenberg had helped the United States to a gold medal at the 1954 Pan Am Games and a silver at the 1958 European Championships. He guided the SJU program for just two seasons before taking over national team boats, but laid the groundwork for future success. Legendary coach Joe Toland took over for Rosenberg and established SJU as one of the East’s most successful programs from 1961-73. Toland helped SJU to six championships in Bergen Cup competition, as well as three President’s Cup crowns. His varsity heavyweight eights advanced to the Dad Vail final in 12 of his 13 seasons. The V8 accomplished the greatest feat of the early era of Hawk rowing by winning the Dad Vail in 1970 and the team captured the Bratton Trophy as the overall points champion in 1971. Six of Toland’s former Hawks would go on to represent the U.S. in international competition. Toland relinquished the reins of the Hawk program to one of his former Hawk standouts, Jim Glavin. A member of SJU’s 1970 Dad Vail champs, Glavin would go on to coach several junior national team boats. With the face of the University changing, the rowing program returned to club status following the 1975 season, but continued to produce strong crews throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Rowing returned as an official varsity sport in 1991 and the program quickly reclaimed its status among the nation’s best. In 1999, the Hawk men penned, arguably the greatest feat in school history, matching the great 1971 Hawk squad by winning the Dad Vail points title for the second time in school history and competing at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River in London, England. The University affirmed its commitment to rowing by breaking ground, along with St. Joseph’s Prep, on a state-of-the-art boathouse along the Schuylkill River. Named in honor of Robert Gillin, Jr., construction was completed in time for the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta and provides a permanent home for the Hawk rowing programs. Former SJU standout Drew Hill took over as head coach of the SJU program in 2003 and immediately made his presence felt. Sixteen Hawk boats advanced to the Dad Vail finals (15 claiming medals) in his first five seasons, and SJU matched the 1971 and 1999 squads by capturing the men’s points title in 2003, 2005 and 2006.

SJU ROWING TRADITION

Mike Teti was the head coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, guiding the U.S. to the bronze medal in Beijing.

Individually, 12 former Hawks have competed internationally and seven have been inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame, including Glavin, Toland, Richard and Donald Flanigan ‘60, Joe Henwood ‘68, Chris O’Brien ‘92 and Mike Teti ‘78. Arguably the best-known oarsman in America, Mike Teti was a top Hawk rower, graduating from SJU with a sociology degree in 1978. “Saint Joseph’s gave me the opportunity to compete and also the opportunity for a great education,” Teti says. “I owe SJU a great debt for all of the opportunities I received.” From 1977-93, Teti rowed on 11 national teams, including three trips to the Olympic Games. He won 24 national championships, a gold medal in the men’s eight at the 1987 World Championships and a bronze medal in the same event at the 1988 Olympics. He was named the 1987 United States Rowing Male Athlete of the Year. Teti achieved even greater notoriety as a coach, guiding the U.S. men’s open eight squad to an unprecedented three straight world championships. He also coached the men’s four with coxswain to world championship gold. In 1996 he led the lightweight men’s four to an Olympic bronze medal before being named USRowing’s Head Men’s Sweep Coach, the highest coaching honor in the country, in October of that year. Teti became the U.S. Olympic coach following the 2000 Games, and led the men’s eight boat to gold in Athens in 2004, a feat that the United States had not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, Al Rosenberg, led the Americans to victory. Teti also guided the U.S. Men to the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Teti is currently the head coach of the men’s crew team at the University of California and was inducted into the National Rowing Federation’s Hall of Fame in 2010. A more recent Hawk to make his mark on the international scene is senior Ryan Pawling. As a freshman, Pawling coxed the Adaptive Mixed Four squad to fifth place in the World Championships in Munich in 2007, which qualified the crew for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Saint Joseph’s christened a shell in honor of the 1970 Dad Vail Champion Varsity 8, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010.

JESUIT INVITATIONAL

Saint Joseph’s Rowing established the Jesuit Invitational in 1999 and it has become a major race in the collegiate rowing season, featuring solely Jesuit colleges. The Jesuit Invitational is held every year in March on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Men’s Varsity 8 champion, while the Robert Gillin, Jr., Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Women’s Varsity 8 winner. The Cannonball Trophy is given to the overall team champion. It is named in honor of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, who had his leg shattered by a cannonball while defending Spain from an attack by France. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded to the school with the highest combined points in the day’s races. It is a traveling trophy which the winner returns every year. The winning team receives a small cannonball that is theirs to keep as a reminder of their championship performance.

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who seek to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment is approximately 4,600. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 7,400. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education which prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-theart distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national, and international opportunities for student service. From parts of Philadelphia to New Jersey; from Tijuana, Mexico, to the Appalachian Mountains; and from Ecuador to Tanzania, Saint Joseph's students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events which

draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students literally to enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a

park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia only a short ride away. SJU's Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia's historic Main Line suburbs. Center City's cultural, commercial, and recreational activities are only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers - the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute Science Museum, and the new Kimmel Center, to name a few. In addition to rooting for their beloved Hawks, SJU students can be found cheering on the professional sports teams in the city, particularly the Eagles, Flyers, Phillies and 76ers.
