Last season, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team finished second in the Atlantic 10 standings and reached the conference tournament for the ninth consecutive year. As a new campaign gets underway, there is a team-wide consensus on the squad’s goal for 2010. “We want to work our way up to being number one in the A-10,” says senior captain Casey Fry. “And then, hopefully, win the A-10 championship.” In order to achieve that goal, the Hawks will have to replace the scoring lost due to the graduation of offensive leaders Anne Schreuders and Kellie Walter. Head coach Michelle Finegan has a number of talented players ready to step into the void and make their presence felt in the Atlantic 10. “[Senior captain] Jen Wrublesky has been a consistent leader for the offense,” says Finegan. “She’s quick up front and should continue to get some good shots.” Wrublesky has scored 19 goals in her career, including 10 in 2007, when she was named the conference’s top rookie. Joining her on the front line will be senior Hannah Rogers, who enjoyed a breakout season in 2009 with six goals and three assists. Junior forward Ellen Rowe was second on the squad last year with nine goals scored, and will use her speed to her advantage as she looks to build on that foundation.

Casey Fry has started every game the past two seasons for Saint Joseph’s and has become one of the squad’s top end-to-end players. The Hawks will rely on her to provide a steady presence on both offense and defense this season. 2

SEASON OUTLOOK

The wild card for the Hawk offense could be senior Nicole McCreight. She has played in just 15 games in her career while battling injuries, but if she can add a scoring presence to the offense, SJU could post some significantly increased scorelines this season. Adding depth to the forward line will be sophomores Meghan Githens and Ashlee Willis and freshman Alexandra Donaruma. The Saint Joseph’s midfield has a great mix of youth and experience this season, as Fry and junior Theresa Testa are back to lead the charge in transition. Fry has played in every game over the course of her first three seasons on Hawk Hill, moving from the midfield into the defense as a sophomore. She’s back in the midfield for 2010 and will be counted on to contribute both offensively and defensively throughout the year. Testa, meanwhile, is poised for a breakout year of her own. “Theresa is coming on really strong,” Finegan says. “She made the junior High Performance Team this past summer, and she’s always had a good shot.” Testa scored three goals last season and added an assist after tallying four helpers in 2008. Sophomores Jordan Cotter and Leigh Deininger will come off the bench for the Hawks but should see significant time. Cotter played in eight contests as a rookie while Deininger saw action in 16 games, starting eight. Freshmen Sara Kolobielski and Shannon McNeill will also be a part of the midfield rotation this year. Defensively, SJU welcomes back seniors Caitlyn Crane and Katie Maguire to help anchor the backline. The pair will be joined in the lineup by returning starters Therese Doyle and Rachel Walsh. The two junior backs have combined to start 39 games over their first two years in the Crimson and Gray. Sophomores Abby Hoover and Kortney Smith round out the defensive corps. Hoover has had a strong offseason camp and could crack the starting lineup come the last weekend of August. The last line of defense is always the cage, and the Hawks have solid experience returning there with senior captain Kelly Swanick and junior Liz Messaros. Swanick has been the primary starter the last two seasons and has a chance to crack the alltime top five in career victories, while Messaros got valuable game experience last season and will serve as a more than capable backup to the senior.

Jen Wrublesky is on the cusp of cracking SJU’s all-time top 10 lists in goals, assists, and points in 2010. The Hawks will rely on her speed on the field and her senior leadership off of it to propel them to an an Atlantic 10 championship.

The Hawks also have a pair of talented freshman keepers at their disposal in Kate Mitchell and Celia Vinciguerra. SJU’s greatest strength this season could be its team chemistry. With the abundance of senior leadership on the squad and the continuity provided by a veteran core, the team has already bonded together. “I think this year everyone already feels a bit of a group bond, a team unity,” says Wrublesky. “We play really well as a unit and we all balance each other out.” “We’ve learned and played with each other for a couple years now,” Swanick says. “That makes it fun. It’s a good chemistry.” Finegan’s charges will face a tough schedule in 2010, with 10 opponents receiving votes in the preseason national polls. The Hawks will be challenged right out of the gate, facing third-ranked Virginia and 11th-ranked Drexel in two of their first three contests. The schedule strength also takes a leap up in conference play as Lock Haven joins the Atlantic 10 for the 2010 season. With the addition of the Eagles, competition for berths in the conference tournament will be fierce. After nine consecutive semifinal berths, the Hawks will aim to perch themselves atop the Atlantic 10 for the first time in 15 years. With a highly motivated veteran squad, Saint Joseph’s could have the team to do just that.

HEAD COACH Michelle Finegan Delaware ‘84 14th Season

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk program to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most successful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons with double-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history. A two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Finegan has notched more wins than any coach in program history. ASSISTANT COACH Erin Hanshue Temple ‘09 First Season

Former Temple University goalkeeper Erin Hanshue has joined the Saint Joseph’s coaching staff for the 2010 season after one season as an assistant at Division III Widener University. “Erin brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the position,” said Saint Joseph’s head coach Michelle Finegan. “In addition, her track record as a standout goalkeeper is a critical component that she brings to the staff. Erin knows what it takes to win in the Atlantic 10, and we’re happy to have her on Hawk Hill.” Hanshue, a 2009 graduate of Temple University, spent last season on the staff at Widener University, primarily assisting with the defense and goalkeepers. She is also a veteran camp instructor, working for the past eight years at both the Red Rose and Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Camps. She has also assisted at camps at both Temple and West Chester. On the field, Hanshue was a four-year starter in the cage for the Owls. She was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team in 2005 and the A-10 All-Tournament Team in 2006. She backstopped the Owls to the conference regular season title in 2007 on her way to Atlantic 10 Honorable Mention and All-Region Second Team accolades. Hanshue also ranked third in the country in goals against average (1.13) that season. A native of Hummelstown, Pa., she was also a United States Field Hockey Association Futures Elite Athlete and remains active as a coach and regional selector for the USFHA. Hanshue is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport administration from West Chester University.

Erin Hanshue spent four seasons as the starting backstop for the Temple Owls, earning All-Region Second Team accolades in 2007. She spent the 2009 season as an assistant on the Widener staff before coming to Hawk Hill.

BUCKLEY FIELD

The Saint Joseph’s field hockey team will return to Drexel University’s Buckley Field for its home contests in 2010. As part of the University’s acquisition of the Maguire Campus, the field hockey program said goodbye to Finnesey Field after the 2007 season in anticipation of moving to their new home turf in the near future. The as-ofyet unnamed facility will provide the Hawks with unlimited access to the field for practice and games. Buckley Field, the home of the Dragons, is an AstroTurf Field located on the northern side of Drexel’s Vidas Athletic Complex. The field features lighting and a new scoreboard as well as seating for up to 500 spectators. In addition to its game day activities, Buckley Field hosts camps and clinics in both field hockey and lacrosse. The field has also hosted exhibition matches featuring the English National Men’s Lacrosse team and the English National Women’s Field Hockey team. This marks SJU’s third season of competition at Buckley Field and the fifth for the facility as a whole. The Hawks are 10-10 all-time at the venue, including an impressive 7-4 home record in 2008.

SJU ON FINNESEY FIELD The Hawks called Finnesey Field home for 24 seasons prior to 2008. Over the course of two-plus decades, Saint Joseph’s won 125 games and notched a .559 winning percentage on its home turf. Season 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 54 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

The Saint Joseph’s field hockey team weathered a tough start to the 2009 season to reach the Atlantic 10 Championship for the ninth consecutive season and, in the process, posted its best conference winning percentage since 1995 on the way to a tie for second place in the A-10. The Hawks went winless on a season-opening homestand against tough competition, including matchups with Duke, Delaware, and Drexel. SJU earned its first win of the season in dramatic fashion, taking a 5-4 double-overtime thriller over Missouri State before falling to Northwestern. After a 1-1 trip to Lock Haven, the Hawks returned home and set their sights on the Atlantic 10 Championship. Things started off well as SJU trounced conference rivals Temple (4-0) and Massachusetts (3-0), with a 4-0 rout of non-conference for Rutgers sandwiched in. After a heartbreaking overtime defeat at La Salle, the Hawks locked up a postseason bid with a win at West Chester. They would then fall to Villanova and Richmond before dismantling Saint Louis, 7-0, to finish the year at 4-2 in conference play. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, Temple avenged its earlier loss with a 3-0 win in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship in Amherst, Mass., to end the season for SJU. Seniors Anne Schreuders and Kellie Walter led the offense, along with sophomore Ellen Rowe and junior Hannah Rogers. Schreuders paced the squad with career bests in all three scoring categories, tallying 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. Her goal total is tied for the eighth-best single season mark in program history, while her 31 points tie her for sixth-most in a season. Schreuders finished her career tied for ninth all-time with 23 goals, tied for eighth with 18 assists, and tied for seventh all-time with 64 points. Schreuders provided all the scoring in SJU’s 3-0 win over #10 Massachusetts on October 16 and earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors for her efforts. She was also chosen for the AllConference First Team and the All-Academic Squad after tying for second in the league in goals and points. She was also a member of the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team and participated in the Division I Senior All-Star Game at the Final Four in Winston-Salem, N.C. Walter led the team in assists for the year with nine, bumping her career total to 20, good for sixth on the all-time list. She was named Second Team All-A-10 after finishing with five goals and 19 points, tying her for second on the team with Rowe, who poured in nine goals and added an assist. Rogers also had a breakout season, scoring six goals and tallying three assists for 15 points, good for fourth on the squad. In addition to Schreuders, Theresa Testa earned conference Player of the Week honors on October 26 and made the All-A-10 Second Team as a midfielder. Junior goalkeeper Kelly Swanick shared Co-Player of the Week accolades on October 12. She posted five shutouts on the season, giving her nine for her career, which ties her for sixth in school history. Junior forward Jen Wrublesky was fifth on the team with 13 points (six goals, one assist) and was named to the Atlantic 10 AllAcademic squad for the first time. Returning nine players that started multiple games last season, including three of its top five scorers, Saint Joseph’s should be right in the hunt for the Atlantic 10 crown once again in 2010.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eightschool, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 2010 Field Hockey

A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a league-high six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a leaguebest 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I studentathletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of Rebecca Cunfer, the 2004 Atlantic 10 Field 90 percent or higher in league-spon- Hockey Rookie of the Year, was named Studentsored sports, led by Dayton's average Athlete of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. graduation rate of 97.38 percent. SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others. • To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others. • To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner. • To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

WHY S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY?

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as have most campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy both internally and externally. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among the nation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”). Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,550 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

THE UNIVERSITY

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions.
