Returning its top four scorers and starting goalkeeper for the 2010 season, Saint Joseph’s look to return to the Atlantic 10 postseason for the first time in five year. Coming within a victory of the conference tournament a year ago, SJU begins its quest with high expectations. "We are very excited for this years team. There is a lot more depth on the squad than we have in the past and that will help us playing two games in a weekend," said 10th year head coach Jess Reynolds. While picked to finish 12th in the A-10, Saint Joseph's is poised to prove voters wrong as it returns 15 letterwinners, including seven starters. “We have nearly made the post season the past two years,” Reynolds said of her team’s predicted finish. “Obviously it was disappointing to see where the coaches picked us to finish, but we aren’t worried about that and are focused on our goals.” Bolstering the Hawks' offense will be seniors Lauren Sawyer and Brooke Price, juniors Maggie Lupinski, Jen Pfeiffer and Sandra Mackey and sophomore Ali Yozwiak. An A-10 All-Conference Second Team selection last year, Sawyer recorded three game-winning goals and added a teambest three assists in her most efficient year on Hawk Hill. Starting in a career-high 17 contests, Price will shift focus this year as she transitions from the midfield to forward position. Despite missing four games due to injury, Lupinski tallied a team-best six goals as a sophomore and led the team with 12 points. The 2008 A-10 Rookie of the Year, Pfeiffer’s numbers were down during her sophomore campaign, but still had a productive year that saw her score four goals and add an assist while being marked heavily by opposing defenses. Coming off the bench for much of the year, Mackey and Yozwiak add scoring touches and should press for starting time. Mackey is coming off playing in a career-high 19 games, while Yozwiak finished her rookie year fourth on the team in scoring (eight points) and goals (four).
Senior Lauren Sawyer earned A-10 All-Conference honors in 2009.

SEASON PREVIEW
Junior Jen Pfeiffer is tied for sixth all-time in career goals with 13.
“We have more options up top now than we have had in the past,” Reynolds said. “There is a lot of talent and natural instincts that will automatically make our attack more dynamic.” Between the pipes, sophomore Christine Neal earned AllRookie Team honors after posting four shutouts and a 1.14 goalsagainst-average. With a full season under her belt, Neal is expected to earn most of the starts, with rookie Lauren Jancuska challenging for time. “Christine has excellent confidence and adds great leadership, while Lauren brings steady play to the position,” Reynolds said. On defense, SJU lost two starters, but will be led by talented junior Kayleigh Summers. Senior Kaitlyn Grimes brings experience with sophomore Taylor Mallory challenging for starting time. “Kayleigh is a natural leader and ball winner,” said Reynolds. “Kaitlyn and Taylor all have experience and know what it takes to be successful.” In the midfield, senior Carly Salter and juniors Steph Lawall, Steph Maurer and Kelliann Rooney will look to push a fasterpaced offense in 2010. “The midfield will be a focal point for us as they will help hold our defense in order,” Reynolds said. “ Their style of play will allow us to have a more dynamic attack.” The influx of 10 positional newcomers should give SJU the depth and talent it has lacked in past years. The Hawks welcome Morgan Duffy, Brianna Walsh, Nicole King, Devin Griffin, Mo Hawkins, Morgan Circe, Shannon Farrell, Courtney Paxson, Emily Irons and Lindsey King to the squad with expectations high for them and the team as a whole. “The newcomers add a lot of talent to the team,” said Reynolds. “We’re expecting them to come in early and compete for starting spots and add much needed depth that we haven’t had in several years.” Having fallen just short of its goals in past years, Saint Joseph's is set to meet and exceed expectations in 2010. "Our goal is to make it back to the Atlantic 10 tournament. We have just missed it the past two years and this year we feel we are good enough to make it."
Saint Joseph’s University
HEAD COACH
Jess Reynolds
Head Coach Delaware ‘97 - 10th Year
Jess Reynolds, the only coach in Saint Joseph’s program history to lead the Hawks to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, returns for her 10th season at the helm of the women’s soccer squad. In nine seasons, Reynolds has turned around a team that posted a single A-10 win in the year before she arrived, to a highly-competitive club that has since made three postseason appearances, and came within a victory of the postseason in 2009. Bringing in several highly-touted recruits and transfers in 2003, Reynolds led the Hawks to their first winning season in four years. Saint Joseph’s went 9-8-1 overall and set a program record for Atlantic 10 wins with a 7-4-0 record and qualified for its first A-10 Tournament. The seven-game improvement from 2002 to 2003 ranked among the best in the nation as Reynolds guided three players to All-Conference or All-Rookie recognition, including 2003 A-10 Rookie of the Year Megan Schutt. In 2004, Reynolds guided the Hawks to new heights as Saint Joseph’s earned the team’s first postseason victory. Highlighted by a 1-0 win over La Salle in the A-10 Championship Opening Round, the Hawks posted a 911-1 overall record and finished 6-4-1 in conference play. REYNOLDS’ RESUMÉ Having graduated the Hawks’ top scorer and goalkeeper, Reynolds’ Head Coach Years coaching ability shined in 2006 as Saint Joseph’s fought into the final Saint Joseph’s 2001-Present weekend for a playoff spot. Despite falling shy of the program’s fourthWest Chester 2000 straight postseason appearance, Reynolds coached the Hawks to a single-season best 33 goals, while helping senior Ali Wean become the Assistant Coach Years Delaware 1999 squad’s first ever A-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Wean also became Temple 1998 the second Hawk under Reynolds to earn A-10 First Team All-Conference honors, and the first SJU player to be named to SoccerBuzz.com’s MidPlayer Years Atlantic Third Team after scoring a single-season record 14 goals. Delaware 1993-96 Compiling one of the toughest schedules in the region in 2007, Reynolds’ young club responded, going 3-4-1 at home and had a pair of freshmen leading the way on offense. Boosted by the 17th-best ranked recruiting class by SoccerBuzz.com in 2008, Reynolds guided the Hawks to the fifth most-improved record in the nation at 8-7-4. Additionally, Saint Joseph’s surpassed the previous record for consecutive victories, stringing together five straight in 2008. Individually, several Hawks posted career years, while freshman Jen Pfeiffer excelled under Reynolds’ guidance. Pfeiffer became just the second SJU player - and second under Reynolds - to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and All-Freshman Mid-Atlantic Team honors. Last season, Reynolds pushed her team to the brink of a postseason berth as the Hawks remained in contention for the postseason heading into the regular season finale. While SJU finished two points shy of its goal, the Hawks finished with a program-best 1.07 goals-against-average, with junior Lauren Sawyer earning All-Conference honors and Christine Neal garnering All-Rookie accolades. Away from the sidelines, Reynolds has also been instrumental in guiding the team’s previous trips to Brazil, Norway, California and Colorado the past four seasons and has directed off-season camps to help raise money for the team, as well as local charities. Prior to coming to Saint Joseph’s in August of 2001, she spent one year as head coach at West Chester University, where the Golden Rams compiled a record of 10-9-1. In addition to her responsibilities of handling the soccer team, Reynolds also coordinated all aspects of West Chester’s extensive summer camp. A four-year starter at Delaware, Reynolds earned her undergraduate degree in education in 1997 and is currently enrolled in Saint Joseph’s master’s in educational leadership program. Reynolds returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach in April of 1999 and also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Temple for one season. She presently serves as head coach of FC Delco Storm U-17 and assists with the FC Delco U-12 squad. A native of Swarthmore, Pa., Reynolds played her high school soccer at Strath Haven. She currently resides in Philadelphia. Year 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Overall At SJU

ASSISTANT COACH
Drew Kopp
Assistant Coach Pittsburgh ‘99 - Third Year
A standout at both the collegiate and professional levels, Drew Kopp returns for his third year as an assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s. In his first season with the Hawks, Kopp helped the defense lower its goals-against from 2.86 to 1.89, and helped SJU to a program-best five-straight wins. Last year, Saint Joseph’s again showed major improvements in the defensive back, as the Hawks posted six shutouts. Under Kopp’s guidance, SJU recorded its best goals-against-average (1.07) in team history. An eight-year member of the Philadelphia KiXX, Kopp came to Saint Joseph’s after spending the previous two years at crosstown rival La Salle. During his two years with the Explorers, La Salle posted an overall record of 20-19-1 and 11-8-1 in Atlantic 10 play, including a bid to the 2006 A-10 Tournament. A standout collegiate player in his own right, Kopp was a fouryear letterwinner at the University of Pittsburgh. Playing both at forward and in the midfield for the Panthers, he graduated in 1999 tied for fifth all-time in points. After graduation, Kopp continued his playing career with the Philadelphia KiXX of the Major Indoor Soccer League, debuting in the fall of 2000. Over the next eight seasons, he played in over 200 games, earned MISL Player of the Month accolades and helped the KiXX to a pair of MISL titles (2001-02 and 2006-07). Kopp also played six seasons for the Hershey Wildcats (three years), Montreal Impact (two years) and Charleston Battery (one year) in the United Soccer League’s First Division. Currently, Kopp is head coach of the U-16 FC Delco Force and an assistant coach for the U-17 FC Delco Sting, helping them to two state championships and an appearance in the 2005 Region 1 Championship. Kopp also holds his USSF B License. A four-year standout at Cedar Crest High School, Kopp earned Regional All-American and Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association All-State honors as a senior. Kopp, his wife, Kristin, and son, Keanan, reside in Philadelphia.

Jim Bollinger
Assistant Coach Gettysburg ‘95 - Third Year
Helping Saint Joseph’s improve its goalkeeping, Jim Bollinger begins his third season as an assistant coach at Hawk Hill. Joining Jess Reynolds’ staff in 2008, Bollinger helped bolster Saint Joseph’s goalkeeping, improving wins, save percentage and lowering goals allowed by 19. This past year, Bollinger was instrumental in the Hawks’ stellar play in goal, helping Christine Neal earn Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team honors. Additionally, the Hawks ranked fourth in the conference with posted single-season best 1.07 goals against average. Bollinger came to Saint Joseph’s after a four-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach at La Salle and three years as a volunteer assistant and athletic training consultant at Villanova. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach with his collegiate team at Gettysburg College. Bollinger currently serves as an athletic trainer for US Soccer. Working with U.S. Soccer and youth teams, he accompanied the Men’s National Team as it advanced to the finals of the 2009 Confederations Cup. He previously spent 10 seasons as the head athletic trainer for the Philadelphia KiXX.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

FINNESEY FIELD
Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University as it enters its 80th year. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade happened in the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Home to the women’s and men’s soccer teams as well as the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the field has seen other modifications since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a true multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the

The squad has compiled an overall 4951-8 mark in 14 seasons at Hawk Hill. The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958 as the Saint Joseph’s men opened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958. Hawks’ field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007. Looking to make the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2005, the Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team entered the season’s final game with a chance at ending its drought. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they would come up short of that goal, but capped a solid season that proved they could compete with the top squads in the conference. Opening the season against Providence, Saint Joseph’s sophomore Maggie Lupinski quickly proved to be a force on offense, tallying the Hawks’ lone goal in a 2-1 loss. The Hawks got into the win column two days later as rookie Ali Yozwiak tallied her first collegiate goal, while classmate Kat Kelble made one save for the shutout. Lupinski’s scoring touch continued against Mount St. Mary’s, but the Hawks fell short in a 2-1 loss. Rookie goalkeeper Christine Neal and her squad played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Delaware as the SJU defense limited the Fightin’ Blue Hens to just one shot on net. An offensive outburst helped Saint Joseph’s back to .500 with a 5-2 win at Saint Peter’s. Lupinski registered her first career hat trick, while Lauren Sawyer and Emily Knesevitch each recorded a goal. The Hawks went 1-1-1 in the final three games of the nonconference portion of their schedule. Following a 2-0 loss to Towson, SJU earned a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Penn, and Lupinski lifted her team past Syracuse, 1-0. Massachusetts handed the Hawks a 2-1 defeat in the A-10 opener, but SJU bounced back with a dominant 4-0 victory over Xavier. Sophomore Jen Pfeiffer struck twice, while Neal made three saves to even the Hawks’ conference record. Earning a point in a 1-1 tie with George Washington, Saint Joseph’s dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match at Richmond, but rebounded with a pair of victories over Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. Yozwiak recorded the game-winner in a 2-1 decision over the Dukes, while Pfeiffer’s strike was all SJU needed in a 1-0 win over the Bonnies.
2009 YEAR IN REVIEW
One of just three Hawks to start every game in 2009, Danielle DeBernardo earned the team’s Player’s Player award.
Saint Joseph’s postseason chances were dealt two blows with one-goal losses at Fordham and La Salle, but the Hawks regrouped with a 2-1 vicory over a talented Saint Louis club. Controlling its destiny, SJU got an early goal from senior Taylor Carr, but allowed three straight Charlotte goals, forcing the Hawks to win their final game of the season against Temple and get help elsewhere. Fighting valiantly to the final whistle, Saint Joseph’s couldn’t respond to an early second-half goal, as the Hawks’ season came to a close with a 1-0 loss to the Owls. While Saint Joseph’s fell short of the conference tournament, several Hawks had standout campaigns as Sawyer earned A-10 AllConference Second Team honors and Neal garnered All-Rookie Team accolades. Returning a majority of their starters, and playing with a fully healthy roster, the Hawks will build upon its successes in 2009 as they strive to make a return to the A-10 Tournament in 2010.

THE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,550 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on

campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excel-
lent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
