2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 1
2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW The Hawks enter the 2011-12 season with their most youthful roster in years as they add five newcomers to the core of three returning letterwinners. Bolstered by seniors Jimmy Bea and Andrew Jaskel and sophomore Kyle Jeziorski, Saint Joseph’s looks to challenge for event titles on a weekly basis, building towards the Atlantic 10 Championship at the end of April. Leading the Hawks in scoring for three-straight season, Bea heads into his final year looking to finish on a strong note. Steadily improving each season, he posted a career-best 74.9 strokes per round as a junior, and finished first on the team in seven events. Highlighted by a tie for third at the Rhode Island Ram Invitational a season ago, Bea finished in the top-20 of five events in 2010-11 and has 13 top-20 finishes as a Hawk. Competing in a career-best 28 rounds last year, Jaskel has become a dependable leader for Saint Joseph’s. Building off a solid junior season, he enters his senior year with momentum as he won Philadelphia Junior Tour College Series event at Medford Village Country Club this past summer. Appearing in a majority of the Hawk’s tournaments as a rookie, Jeziorski will build off his experiences heading into the new year. Playing mostly during the fall schedule, Jeziorski finished in a season-best tie for 62nd at the Navy Fall Invitational, which included a season-low 75 in the second round. Adding talent and depth to the Hawks roster this season are freshmen Connor Garrity, Tim Godshalk and Connor Hill and sophomore walk-ons Mike Hartsough and Tyler Kinglsey. A four-year letterwinner at Hollidaysburg Area, Garrity helped his team claim four-straight PIAA District 6 titles, while being a key member of the PIAA State championship squad as a freshman. Averaging 74.8 strokes per round, he competed on the PGA Junior Series Tour the past three years and posted three top-10 finishes. Garrity also adds experience against international competition as he paced the Pennsylvania Golf Association at the 2010 Williamson Cup. Competing on the International Junior Golf Tour for several years, Godshalk posted seven top-10 finishes over the past four years. Highlighted by a third place finish at the Collection River Invitational in 2009 and a fifthplace finish at the Sea Pines Invitational in 2010, he also qualified for both the 2010 U.S. Amateur and the 2010 South Carolina Junior Golf Association Junior Championship.
Senior Andrew Jaskel is coming off a career-high 28 rounds as a junior and will lend valuable leadership to the young SJU team.
Senior Jimmy Bea enters his final season on Hawk Hill having led the team in stroke average twice.
One of the top high school golfers in Virginia, Hill ranked 16th best in the state this year by the Junior Golf Scoreboard after averaging 75.8 strokes per round. A four-year letterwinner at Douglas S. Freeman, he won medalist honors five times as a senior and placed seventh at the 2010 Richmond Golf Association Junior Amateur. Earning a spot on as a walk-on, Hartsough was an All-Catholic all four seasons at Monsignor Bonner and garnered All-Delco distinctions as a senior. Winning medalist honors at the 2009-10 Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Athletic Association District 12 Championship, he has since competed on both the Philadelphia PGA Juniors and Philadelphia PGA Collegiate Tours. A three-time Section Three First Team honoree at Fayetteville-Manlius, Kingsley averaged 36.5 strokes per round as a senior and claimed medalist honors at the 2010 Syracuse Amateur. Saint Joseph’s opens the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, before heading to the Northeast for the Adams Cup of Newport. The Hawks will then travel to Fort Myers, Florida to compete in the Cobra-Puma Invitational, hosted by Xavier. Returning to Philadelphia, the Hawks begin play at the Big 5 Invitational in early October, followed by the Georgetown Hoya Invitational and the Old Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate Invite to wrap up the fall slate. The spring schedule opens with the 24-team field at the C&F Bank Invitational, followed by the Villanova Wildcat Invitational and the Princeton Invitational. Saint Joseph’s will cap its regular-season schedule at the Navy Spring Invitational before heading to Coral Springs, Florida, for the Atlantic 10 Championship. Leaning on their veterans for leadership, the Hawks should challenge the top teams in the conference to try and bring back the first A-10 title to Hawk Hill.

HOME COURSES LLANERCH COUNTRY CLUB
Scenic Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, Pa., has served as the home for the Saint Joseph’s University golf team since 1959. Founded in 1919, Llanerch ranks as one of the finest courses in the Delaware Valley. Taking on many shapes over the years, the current 18-hole configuration opened on April 27, 1949 and measures 6,482 yards with a par of 72. Possessing a rich history, many of the nation’s best professionals have played on the Llanerch links over the past 80 years. Arguably the biggest tournament to be played on the site was the 1958 PGA Championship. Golf legend Dow Finsterwald captured the title that year with a score of 276 for 72 holes. That tournament became particularly prominent because stroke play format was used for the first time in PGA Championship history. Other notable events hosted by the course include the Philadelphia Inquirer Invitational in 1945. Byron Nelson captured the title that year, posting the seventh of 11 consecutive tournament championships. It was also the site of the 1949 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship, won by Dorothy Germain Porter. Llanerch has also served as the host of the Philadelphia Amateur Championship three times (1931, 1934 and 1998), as well as the Philadelphia Section PGA Championship five times (1940, 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1965).

BALA GOLF CLUB
Established in 1897, Bala Golf Club has once again become home to the Saint Joseph’s golf program in recent years. The Hawks began playing out of Bala Golf Club following World War II, but changed courses after several seasons, only to return to Bala in 2007. Founded by George Reach and Charles Hickman, Bala Golf Club was originally designed by Willie Tyler as a nine-hole, 2,747-yard course (par 35 1/2). Following pressure to expand to an 18-hole course, Bala Golf Club hired William S. Flynn to renovate the course in 1923. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has continued to expand, inheriting several hole locations from Philadelphia Country Club’s previous home alongside Belmont Avenue. Additionally, Bala Golf Club has been home to numerous tournaments, including the 1952 U.S. Women’s Open.

HEAD COACH Bob Lynch Head Coach La Salle ‘79 - 24th Season
Guiding 17 Hawks to All-Conference honors, Bob Lynch begins his 24th season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s golf program. The 2003 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, he has led the Hawks back to prominence as one of the stronger programs in the Northeast, with several individuals excelling under his teaching, including two All-Region golfers. The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s program to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place, a feat the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons. In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since that time, SJU has competed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all over the country. Additionally, several former Hawks have gone on to have stellar careers thanks to his coaching. Mike McDermott ‘97 won the 2008 Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Championship and competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Phil Arouca ‘07 claimed the 2011 Illinois Open, while Steve Hudacek ‘09 advanced to finals of the 2011 Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Championship. A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-year old works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. The Richboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketball games and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’s basketball games. A 1979 graduate of La Salle University, Lynch and his wife Monica are the parents of five children: Maureen, Bob, Dan, Brian, and Jim.

2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 7
2010-11 YEAR IN REVIEW Returning just two starters from last year’s squad, the Saint Joseph’s golf team entered the 2010-11 season looking for its veteran-laden roster to step into bigger roles. While several golfers competed more than in previous years, it was senior Josh Webb and junior Jimmy Bea leading the charge for the Hawks throughout the year. Combining for three top-10 and seven top-20 finishes, Webb and Bea finished as the top two golfers for Saint Joseph’s in eight of 12 matches during the season. Bea finished the year with a team and career-best 74.9 strokes per round, while Webb capped his SJU career with his best season of all, averaging 76.0 strokes per round, while posting a pair of top-10 finishes. The Hawks opened the year with a strong outing at the Navy Fall Invitational, finishing eighth of 16 teams, while Bea and classmate Andrew Jaskel led the way, each tying for 12th place. Unfortunately for Saint Joseph’s, the remainder of the fall schedule wasn’t as welcoming as the Hawks struggled to find consistent scoring from their final three spots in the rotation. Saint Joseph’s finished 15th of 17 at the Adams Cup; tied for 11th in the 15-team field at the Hartford Invitational; placed 20th of 21 at the Big 5 Classic; finished 12th in the 12-team field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate; and placed 17th in the 18-team field at the Old Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate Invite. Bea tied for 20th at the C & F Bank Invitational to start the spring, while SJU finished 17th of 24. Bea would follow with another top 20 finish at the Wildcat Invitational as the Hawks tied for 11th in the 20team field. Webb was a bright spot for SJU at the Princeton Invitational and Navy Spring Invite, tying for seventh and fourth, respectively, while the Hawks finished 10th of 12 and seventh of 20. Heading into his final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championship, Bea posted his best finish at the rain-shortened Rhode Island invitational, tying for third, while Saint Joseph’s finished sixth of 11 teams. Adding momentum to their side, the Hawks entered the 2011 A10 Championship looking to challenge for the conference crown. Webb and Bea again led the charge, finishing 22nd and tying for 23rd, respectively. However, Saint Joseph’s couldn’t get scoring from the bottom of its lineup as the Hawks posted a 10th-place finish to cap the season. TOP PERFORMANCES - FALL 2010
Josh Webb led the Hawks in scoring at four events, including a pair of top-10 finishes in the spring.

HISTORY Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of the oldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931 as it replaced baseball on Hawk Hill. The first Saint Joseph’s team - consisting of Gene Barnes, John McCormick, Frank Daly, James McCormick, Francis Gallagher, Michael Cullather, George Hartigan, Leo Murphy, John Lehman, Allen Seltzer, Joseph Stanton, and Joseph Schaeffer - played its first match in the Spring of 1931 against the University of Delaware at the Newark Country Club. After posting an 0-6 mark in their inaugural season, the Hawks claimed the program’s first victory in the fall of 1931 as they topped Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 9-0. Saint Joseph’s also shifted its home that season from Cobbs Creek to the Cedarbrook Country Club. The golf program was disbanded from 1942-47 due to World War II, but returned to Hawk Hill in the spring of 1948. Playing out of the Bala Country Club, Saint Joseph’s return to the course was spearheaded by seniors The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 during Tom Shannon and Jack McGinty, with future SJU Hall of Famer Paul McDermitt playing out of the top flight for theseason, won the Middle Atlantic Conference Title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. the Hawks. As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. Saint Joseph’s won its first Middle Atlantic Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1963; however the team decided not to go so that they could make extra money working summer jobs. The Hawks would again claim the MAC title in 1964 and turned in similar feats from 1875-78 as they were led by All-America Honorable Mention John Truax. In 1982, Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, with the Hawks tying for fourth in their first conference championship. Saint Joseph’s has since turned in its highest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. It previously placed third in 1993, 1994 and 1995. The Hawks claimed their second-straight MAC title in 1964 as Bob Toner (fourth from the left) claimed medalist honors. Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as captain of the golf team and also lettered in baseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more letters than anyone in Saint Joseph’s history, and was enshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. Center: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermott earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors a combined five times during their years on Hawk Hill.

ATLANTIC 10 On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This repre-
sents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a leaguehigh six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A10 features eight women's tennis and women's soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

THE HAWK
SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.
• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.
• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.
• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.
• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.
• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE 17
THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi-
tion, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent

record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
