2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 1
2011-12 SEASON PREVIEW Possessing his most talented squad yet, fourth-year head coach Ian Crookenden has the Hawks pointed in the right direction as they enter the 2011-12 season. With the return of its top-two players, and a lineup composed of veteran leaders and gifted newcomers, Saint Joseph’s will try to prove skeptics wrong about an 11th-place Atlantic 10 preseason prediction. Quickly becoming one of the best players in SJU history, junior Casey Robinson is coming off a stellar 2010-11 that earned the Hawks’ No. 1 singles player Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors. Finishing with a 14-7 record at the top singles flight, Robinson posted the third-highest winning percentage in team hisotry, while her 14 wins at No. 1 singles were one shy of the SJU single-season mark. Continuing to improve her game, Robinson worked extensively over the summer, competiting in International Tennis Federation events in South Africa and Cuba, while winning both the singles and doubles titles at the 14th Annual Pennsylvania State Tennis Championships. Starting last season at No. 1 singles, but moving to the second flight as the season progressed, Devi Jadeja turned in one of the top freshman campaigns in team history. Winning 15 singles matches, Jadeja tied for the second-most wins in a single season and led the Hawks overall in 2010-11. Additionally, Jadeja combined to win a team-high nine doubles matches. Returning from an injury that held her out for much of last year, senior Laura Matz will help bolster the middle flights for the Hawks. Competing from the second through fifth flights over her first three seasons, Matz has collected 10 of her 14 singles victories between the third and fourth flights. Seeing extensive competition a season ago, seniors Kate Dowd and Tara Walsh, juniors Nicole Esposito and Jenna Procyk and sophomore Michele Vona give Saint Joseph’s experience in the final three flights.
Junior Casey Robinson
Sophomore Devi Jadeja
Dowd enters her final season on Hawk Hill having competed in a career-high 20 singles matches, while Walsh played in 29 matches between the fourth and fifth flights. Depsite missing some time with injuries, Esposito recorded six wins as a sophomore, good for fourth most on SJU. After playing just two singles matches as a freshman, Procyk played in 21 contests as a junior and 43 combined including doubles matches, while Vona, a walk-on, appeared in three singles matches and a pair of doubles contests. Bringing both team and individual success to the Hawks, freshmen Aurora Davis, Kelly Mulquin and Lauren Roy will challenge for starting roles this year. A three-time conference singles champion at Stroudsburg High School, Davis claimed district singles titles as a junior and senior, while Mulquin excelled against some of the top competition in the Virginia area, winning both the Peggy Dallam Jr. Open and Virginia State Hardcourts title as a senior at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. The two were also recognized as top recruits in the nation as Davis was ranked 26th in the USTA Middle States, while Mulquin ranked third in Virginia and 208th nationally amongst 2011 recruits. Roy, a native of Tours, France, comes to Saint Joseph’s with years of interntaional experience, with most recent matches coming at the French national tournament. As has become customary under Crookenden’s guidance, the Hawks will again face some of the top competition in the region this year. In the fall, SJU will play some of the best players in the Atlantic Region as the Hawks will compete at the Towson 4+1 Classic, the Second Annual Saint Joseph’s Invitational and the ITA Atlantic Regionals. Beginning match play in January, Saint Joseph’s is set to face 24 teams over a three-month stretch, including 10 conference opponents. With that experience, coupled with the talent and determination of this year’s squad, Saint Joseph’s is positioned to make a deep run at the Atlantic 10 Championship and prove that the Hawks are on the rise.

HEAD COACH Ian Crookenden Head Coach/Director of Tennis UCLA ‘67 - 4th Season
A two-time national collegiate champion, a highly-successful professional player and a talented coach, Ian Crookenden enters his fourth year as the director and head coach of the women's and men's tennis programs at Saint Joseph’s. Coming to Hawk Hill in August of 2008, Crookenden has quickly transformed the Saint Joseph’s tennis program into one of the up-and-coming clubs in the region. Crookenden has switched the focus of SJU’s schedule to a year-round format, adding several invitationals and the ITA Regionals to the slate. In addition to the scheduling upgrade, he also helped spearhead the recently-constructed SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. In his first season at Saint Joseph’s, Crookenden helped the Hawks surpass expectations, finishing tied for 11th at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Despite not having a full roster for most of the season due to injury, he guided four Hawks to double-digit victories. CROOKENDEN’S RÉSUMÉ Jhennifer Kedzierski and Krysta Contino’s 12 wins apiece tied for the seventh most in a single-season at SJU, while Maggie Mullaney’s 10 Head Coach Wake Forest (Men’s Team) 1984-96 wins at No. 2 singles was the second most in a year in that flight. Saint Joseph’s 2008-Present The 2009-10 season saw Saint Joseph’s continue to excel under Crookenden as Kedzierski and freshman Casey Robinson became Director of Tennis Philadelphia Cricket Club 1997-2008 the first set of Hawks in decades to compete at the ITA Regionals. Kedzierski would go on to finish her career second all-time in proCROOKENDEN’S RECORD gram history with 42 singles wins, 26 of which came under YEAR-BY-YEAR Crookenden’s guidance. Additionally, SJU tied for 11th place at the Atlantic 10 Championships, with several Hawks challenging the Year W L higher-seeded opponents in earlier matches. 1984-85 17 14 Fighting through an injury-ravaged season last year, the Hawks still had several standout performances 1985-86 18 15 under Crookenden’s guidance, highlighted by Robinson becoming just the third Hawk to garner Atlantic 10 1986-87 12 16 All-Conference honors. Robinson, Mullaney and freshman Devi Jadeja all capped the year with double-digit 1987-88 14 14 singles wins that finished amongst the top-10 in program history. 1988-89 11 19 Prior to Hawk Hill, Crookenden began his collegiate coaching career at Wake Forest. As a rookie, Crookenden made a major impact with his new team, helping UCLA to an 11-0 overall record and the national championship. Teaming with the legendary Arthur Ashe, the pair claimed the fifth NCAA doubles title in program history. The following season, Crookenden became just the second player in UCLA history to claim two NCAA doubles titles. Teaming with Charlie Pasarell, the duo earned the sixth national doubles title for the Bruins. Al Laveson Head Coach Emeritus Temple ‘53 - 46th Season
Hawk Hall of Famer Al Laveson returns for his third as head coach emeritus and 30th season overall with the women’s tennis program at Saint Joseph’s University. The 1953 Temple graduate compiled a 495552 overall record in 44 seasons with both SJU tennis teams, setting the Saint Joseph’s mark for most wins by any coach in Hawk history. During his 27 seasons as head coach of the women’s team, Laveson guided Saint Joseph’s to a 184-200 record, while coaching the men’s squad to a 311-352 record over 44 years. In 2006-07, Laveson coached one of his best teams, as the Hawks set a single-season record for wins, finishing the year 12-10, including a tie for 11th at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Along the way, Stephania Velazquez became only the second Saint Joseph’s player to earn A-10 All-Conference honors, as SJU’s top player earned Second Team accolades. Laveson also guided Jhennifer Kedzierski to a record-setting season at No. 2 singles as the rookie, became the all-time wins leader at the No. 2 flight and set a single-season record for victories with 16. Several other records fell during the season as Krysta Contino became the all-time leader in wins at No. 5 singles (10) and Gina DiGiacomo moved into the top-five for all-time wins at No. 4 singles with 11. Laveson also guided the women’s tennis program to three 10-win seasons and began his career with the women’s team posting eight consecutive winning seasons. Inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, Laveson was the first Hawk mentor to reach 400 career wins with a men’s tennis victory over Towson in the fall of 2002. He was only the second Hawk coach to reach the 300-win plateau in 1994, joining the legendary Bill Ferguson, who guided the basketball team to 309 victories over 25 years. Captain of the Temple tennis team as a collegiate player, Laveson has taught professionally for the United States Professional Tennis Association for the past 43 years. He is also a past vice president of the organization. Laveson retired from his full-time teaching position at Central High School in Philadelphia just before the 1994 season. Prior to his arrival at Central in 1987, he taught for 33 years at Penn Treaty Junior High School. Besides coaching at Saint Joseph’s, Laveson coached the boys’ tennis team at Father Judge High School for two years in the early 1960s and coached girls’ field hockey at Central. He won City Championships in badminton and tennis at Central, along with a gymnastics title while at Penn Treaty. Laveson, who resides in Philadelphia, is the father of three sons, Bob, Dave, and Peter. The two eldest sons were both Saint Joseph’s tennis team captains under their father.

SJU TENNIS COMPLEX Opened in the Fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's current 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2010-11 YEAR IN REVIEW Playing without a complete roster for most of the 2010-11 season, Saint Joseph’s showed glimpses of a bright future as several Hawks had standout performances. After missing most of the fall recovering from an injury, sophomore Casey Robinson proved to be back in top form quickly as she became just the third Hawk to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors. Playing at the top singles flight, she finished the season with a 147 record, including a 1-1 mark against regionally-ranked opponents. Earning A-10 Player of the Week honors once in the spring, Robinson posted one of the top seasons in SJU history, as her 14 wins at No. 1 singles was just one shy of the all-time single-season mark of 15. Additionally, her .667 winning percentage was the third-best singleseason winning percentage in SJU history. Hitting her stride when it mattered most, Robinson won 12 of her last 15 matches, with her two contests at the Atlantic 10 Championships not finishing in time even though she led in the second set in both. On the doubles side, Robinson teamed with senior Maggie Mullaney to go 7-11 at the top doubles flight. Making an immediate impact for Saint Joseph’s freshman Devi Jadeja made a smooth transition to the collegiate game. Playing at both the first and second singles flights, Jadeja posted 15 singles victories, tying her for the second-most wins in a single season. A twotime A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, Jadeja also recorded a teamhigh nine wins in doubles matches after playing with several different teammates throughout the year.
Casey Robinson became just the third Hawk to garner Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors after going 14-7 at No. 1 singles in 2010-11.
For Mullaney, the A-10 Championship marked the culmination of a stellar and understated career on Hawk Hill. The four-year letterwinner steadily helped the Hawks grow, while establishing herself as one of the top players in program history. Playing mostly out of the third singles flight this year, she set a new single-season best with 12 wins, while capping her career with 43 singles victories, finishing for second on the all-time list. Juniors Tara Walsh and Kate Dowd brought experience and stability to the fourth and fifth flights for Saint Joseph's. While making jumps into higher flights than before, the two totalled four and three wins, respectively, and helped solidify doubles competition as they appeared in 16 matches together. Additionally, sophomore Jenna Procyk competed in a career-best 21 matches, while junior Laura Matz and sophomore Nicole Esposito had their seasons cut short due to injury. Also competing during the year were seniors Alexis Arons, Erin Malafronte, junior Melissa Glick and freshman Michele Vona. As a team, the Hawks stayed in most matches thanks to the top of their lineup, but won just six matches, with five coming at home. Despite a competitive effort against higher-seed Massachusetts, Saint Joseph’s eventually fell to the Minutewomen. Picked to finish 11th, the Hawks did just that, downing La Salle 4-0 to end the year on a high note.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants.
The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a leaguehigh six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A10 features eight women's tennis and women's soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.
• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.
• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.
• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.
• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.
• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 23
THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows stu-
dents to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time
jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
