2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 1

2011-12 OUTLOOK Steady and consistent improvement is the goal of any athletic squad, and the Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis team is no different. The Hawks will look to take advantage of a healthy blend of youth and experience to make the 2011-12 season a successful one. Last season, the squad finished eighth at the Atlantic 10 Championship, a step ahead of its ninth-place tie from the previous season. This year, the Hawks have their sights set on breaking through to the league’s upper echelon. “Our goal is to be as good, if not better,” than last year said head coach Ian Crookenden. “That means winning a quarterfinal match against one of the top four seeds, and to do that we’re going to have to be at the top of our games.” The fourth-year headman also wants to change the perception of his squad around the league; with respect comes improved seeding in the conference championship, but that respect is borne out of success on the court. “We have to have other coaches start to recognize that we are a much stronger team than they give us credit for,” Crookenden said. In order to do that, SJU will count on the leadership of seniors Peter Cognetti and Jeff Kessler and junior Tommy Gates to help guide the influx of young talent both on the court and off. “There’s a very good atmosphere around the squad,” Crookenden said. “There is no rivalry, aside from a friendly one; there is no divisive element that I’ve seen.” Junior Alex Veronis will return in the spring from a semester abroad and will inhabit his customary position in the top singles flight. Veronis won 10 matches at number-one singles last season, the most for any Hawk at any individual flight. “After his year last year, I think he knows he can handle the best that this conference has to offer,” Crookenden said of his top singles player. “I don’t think he’ll be satisfied with having anything less than a winning record this year.” Kessler will remain in the second flight, where he played all of his singles matches last season, but after the top two, competition for starting slots is wide open. “We have such a talented squad,” Crookenden explained. “To make sure we don’t overlook anybody’s talents and that we use the players effectively, it’s going to take some time for us to see who performs well in match play. “[The younger players] have to realize that it’s not how they do against other squad members,” he continued. “It’s how they do against the competition, the schools we play against. That’s the record that counts.” As for the doubles pairings, Gates and sophomore Dan Barrus will look to forge a successful partnership this season. Crookenden revealed that seniors Cognetti and Kessler, who have spent a large part of their time on Hawk Hill teamed up, will likely be playing with different partners this season. “I’m splitting Jeff and Peter and trying to incorporate some of the newer talent we have,” the coach remarked. “Max Montague is a very talented doubles player and we want to take advantage of his talents; if we can blend Peter and Jeff’s experience with some of the fresh face, then we might have a new look when we face some of our more established opponents.” Speaking of the Hawks’ opponents, Crookenden has once again put together a challenging schedule for his squad.

Alex Veronis will be SJU’s top-flight singles player once again this season. He won 10 matches laster year at the top of the Hawk lineup. “The schedule is difficult this year because we’re traveling so much and our conference matches are very spaced out through the season,” he explained. The Hawks will face perennial league power George Washington and then Duquesne in home indoor matches in February. A pair of matches with league foes Richmond and Charlotte in early March precedes the annual Spring Break trip to Orlando, where SJU will meet up with programs from across the country such as Kennesaw State, Creighton, South Dakota State, and Presbyterian. The switch between indoor courts and outdoor play can be a tricky one, but Crookenden hopes to have his Hawks flying high by then. “Following our Spring Break trip, we’ll be much better prepared for outdoor play, and that’s when the meat of our schedule is,” he said. “By then we should have some established lineups and doubles combinations worked out.” Returning home, the Hawks will face off with conference foes Xavier, Fordham, La Salle, Temple, and St. Bonaventure over the course of the season’s final month. Saint Joseph’s will also play its customary matches with local rivals such as Villanova and Drexel. The 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship will be held April 13-15 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis squad will be there; how long the Hawks stay, and how far they go, is up to them. If the veteran leaders and young talent can coalesce into the well-rounded squad that their coach envisions, there’s reason to believe that these Hawks can soar to new heights.

Head Coach Emeritus Temple ‘53 – 48th Season

Graduate Assistant Bethel (Tenn.) ‘10 – First Season

Back for his 48th season with the Saint Joseph’s tennis program is head coach emeritus Al Laveson. Prior to the 2008-09 season, Laveson spent the last four-plus decades as the head men’s tennis coach at SJU, and during that time he also spent 28 years as the head coach of the women’s program. Laveson is the all-time leader in coaching wins at Saint Joseph’s, having a combined 495-552 record in his 44 years at the helm. He became the first Hawk coach ever to reach 400 wins when the men’s tennis team defeated Towson on October 8, 2002. In recent years Laveson, a 2001 inductee to the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame, led the men’s team to new heights as the 2002-03 squad tied a school record with 15 wins and a then-best ever fifth place showing at the Atlantic 10 Championship. His 200304 squad would raise the bar again, improving to a fourth-place finish at the conference meet. In 2006 SJU entered the A-10 Championship as the third seed, the highest in school history. Laveson retired from his full-time teaching position at Central High School in Philadelphia in 1994. Before arriving at Central in 1987, he taught for 33 years at Penn Treaty Junior High. Besides coaching at Saint Joseph’s, he coached tennis, badminton, gymnastics, and field hockey at the high school and junior high level. He is also a former vice president of the United States Professional Tennis Association. Laveson, who currently resides in Philadelphia, is the father of three sons: Bob, Dave, and Peter. SJU TENNIS COMPLEX Opened in the fall of 2009, the Saint Joseph’s tennis program moved to the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. The new Tennis Complex adds six new courts as well as new offices and locker rooms for both the women’s and men’s tennis teams. Under head coach Ian Crookenden, Saint Joseph’s has mapped out a plan to extend the program’s reach on campus, regionally and nationally, starting with the Hawks’ new home. The long-time home of the Episcopal Academy, the 38-acre James J. Maguire Campus adds 52 classrooms, eight full laboratories, 113 offices, and 14.5 acres of sports fields to Saint Joseph’s University's 65-acre footprint. Prior to moving across campus to the new SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks played their matches on Finnesey Courts. Adjacent to Finnesey Field, the Finnesey Courts were home to the Hawk women’s and men’s tennis teams since the late 1940s. After briefly disappearing in the late 1990s due to Mandeville Hall’s construction, the Finnesey Courts were refurbished in the summer of 2000 to provide a better playing facility for the athletes. The Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team compiled a record of 82-134 on Finnesey Courts from 1983-09. Saint Joseph’s began competition playing its home matches at the nearby Narberth courts. When courts were first built on campus, they were located where Bellarmine Hall now stands. Due to Bellarmine’s construction in the summer of 1960, however, the Finnesey Courts were torn down and rebuilt in their current location. With the addition of the SJU Tennis Complex, the Hawks now offer 10 courts and year-round state-of-the-art training facilities for student-athletes.

2010-11 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2010-11 Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis squad followed up on its tie for ninth place the previous season with an eighth-place finish in an increasingly competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. Sophomore Alex Veronis garnered Second Team All-Conference honors to lead the way for the Hawks. Veronis started the season strong by reaching the final of the first singles flight at the second annual Saint Joseph’s Invitational, held at the SJU Tennis Complex at the Maguire Campus. As the Hawks began a spring semester slate chockfull of dual matches, the Crimson and Gray took on opposition of some of the highest quality in program history. SJU earned points in matches against Navy and Richmond before heading to Orlando, Florida for the squad’s annual spring break trip. There, Saint Joseph’s faced teams from across the country, including Monmouth, Old Dominion, Creighton, and South Dakota State.

Returning home, SJU bounced back with a pair of wins over La Salle and Fairfield. Freshman Dan Barrus played well enough during the stretch to earn Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week accolades on March 21. In the run-up to the Atlantic 10 Championship, the Hawks took on a bevy of conference opposition, scoring victories over Fordham at home and Dayton in a neutral site contest. Those wins proved critical for the Hawks as they secured the eighth seed in the league championship and were matched up with the Flyers for the second time in a week in the first round. After jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead, SJU had to sweat out a Flyer rally before locking down a 4-2 win to advance to the quarterfinals. There, the Hawks fell to eventual champion George Washington, 4-0. After dropping matches to St. Bonaventure and Richmond in the consolation bracket, the Hawks ended up finishing in eighth place to improve upon last season’s standing. Veronis led the squad in singles wins, posting 14 victories on the year, tied for the fourth-highest singleseason top flight total in school history. For his efforts, the Atlantic 10 head coaches voted him to the AllConference Second Team. Sophomore Tommy Gates led the team in doubles victories, notching 10 in the third flight and a dozen overall for the campaign. Along with Veronis, Barrus, and sophomore Kristian Broaddus, he was also one of four Hawks to post double-digit wins in singles play.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 studentathlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a leaguehigh six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a league-best 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I student-athletes. Moreover, five A-10 institutions enjoy average graduation rates of 90 percent or higher in league-sponsored sports, led by Dayton's average graduation rate of 97.38 percent. The Flyers are followed by George Washington (94.10), Xavier (93.23), La Salle (90.40) and Fordham (90.13). The A10 features eight women's tennis and women's soccer programs that enjoy a 100 percent graduation rate, while six men's teams in both golf and tennis have a 100 percent graduation rate. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of nearly 74 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this season: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.

• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom.

• To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others.

• To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship.

• To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals.

• To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner.

• To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2011-12 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE 19

SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows stu-

dents to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time

jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
