SEASON OUTLOOK After a disappointing finish to the 2010 campaign saw the Saint Joseph’s field hockey team miss the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time in a decade, the Hawks return to the pitch in 2011 with a renewed focus and two primary goals: steady improvement and a return to the postseason. “Right now, I think the goal is to start bonding on the field as a team,” said head coach Michelle Finegan, back for her 15th season on the Hawk sideline. “We want to continue to improve and be better than we were the day before. “The Atlantic 10 will be competitive, as always,” she continued. “We want to get back into the mix and compete and make it back into the tournament. It’s a tough road to hoe, but we’re looking forward to the challenge.” This year that postseason goal carries a little more motivation as Saint Joseph’s will host the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship for the first time since 2007, when SJU reached the championship game on Finnesey Field. The Hawks will look to play for the conference title this season on their brand new home turf on the Maguire Campus, expected to be finished early in the season. After playing the past three seasons at Drexel University, the squad, specifically its five seniors, are eager to take the field along City Avenue. “I know the seniors are absolutely looking forward to having the opportunity to play on their home field,” Finegan said, “and the whole team is eager to play on our home turf. Training, planning, having more time to devote to skills…it’s something that will benefit our team a great deal. It’s very exciting for our program.” Helping Finegan guide the Hawks into their new digs is a trio of talented new assistant coaches. Former University of Louisville standout Jessica Javelet and seasoned collegiate and club program coach Dallas Alexander have joined the staff this season, as has U.S. National Team member Shannon Taylor. The group has meshed well together in the preseason, and the depth and diversity of their experience will provide a young Hawk squad with steady guidance and leadership. strengths and weaknesses, and with more coaches, you definitely have more strengths,” Finegan explained. “We now have three coaches with National Team experience, while Dallas is a strong motivator and excels in teambuilding and leadership. Forwards Ellen Rowe and Therese Doyle will be the offensive catalysts at the top of the formation while Theresa Testa will be counted on to hold things down in the midfield and Rachel Walsh will man the backline. In the cage, goalkeeper Liz Messaros will serve as SJU’s last line of defense. “I think we’re going to lean on [the seniors] a lot,” Finegan said. “They’re all strong leaders, and having them connect with the younger players and help them integrate into the team culture and adjust to the changes between high school and college will be helpful.” The Hawks should feature a good bit of pace on the frontline as Rowe and Doyle lead the charge. Rowe has tallied 13 goals in her career, including a nine-goal explosion as a sophomore, and will use her speed to her advantage once again this season. “Ellen is going to be difficult to stop,” Finegan said. “Her speed is tremendous, and she has skill as well, and that makes her hard to mark.” Doyle had a career-high four goals and nine points in her breakout junior campaign and will look to improve on those numbers as a senior. Joining the senior duo will be junior forwards Meghan Githens and Ashlee Willis, while junior midfielder Jordan Cotter will likely contribute up top as well. Newcomers Nicole Gerdes and Jordan Martin have also impressed during camp and will be counted on to pitch in right from the get-go. Adding talented depth to the front line will be freshmen Brittany Meyer and Moira Penza. “I think we have a group of offensive players that can cause havoc for the opposition,” commented Finegan. HEAD COACH Michelle Finegan Delaware ‘84 15th Season

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk program to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most successful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons with double-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history. A two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Finegan has notched more wins than any coach in program history. Taken alone, either of her two stints at Saint Joseph’s would put her atop the all-time list; combined, Finegan has won nearly FINEGAN’S RÉSUMÉ three times as many games as her nearest competitor. HEAD COACH of Delaware (1978-81), helping the Blue Hens place third in the nation as a junior. She was a member of the United States National Team from 1981-86 and was an alternate on the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team that won the bronze medal in Los Angeles. She came out of retirement as a player in 1993 to start for the U.S. National Team that placed fifth at the Intercontinental Cup and qualified the U.S. for the 1994 World Cup. Actively involved with the United States Field Hockey Association for more than two decades, Finegan has played a role in developing players throughout the nation since the inception of the USFHA Futures Program. She has also served as head coach of the Pennsylvania Pride in the USFHA Summer League. A 1984 graduate of the University of Delaware, Finegan earned her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. ASSISTANT COACHES Jessica Javelet Louisville ‘07 First Season

Former University of Louisville standout Jessica Javelet will join head coach Michelle Finegan’s coaching staff for the 2011 season, her first as a coach at the collegiate level. Javelet comes to Saint Joseph’s from her alma mater, Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, where she served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons. The Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. native has also spent time with the United States Field Hockey Futures Program, where she has worked with the national U-14, U-16, and U-19 programs since 2004. A decorated player at Louisville, Javelet was a First Team All-American as a senior and earned Big East Offensive Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team honors as well. As a junior, she led Division I in goals, finding the cage 30 times, and was a finalist for the Honda Award, given to the top female college athlete in 12 different sports. Javelet was also a finalist for the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Off the field, Javelet was the University of Louisville’s Most Outstanding Graduating Senior and was the valedictorian for the Class of 2007. Among her academic accolades, she was twice named an Academic First Team All-American; in 2007 she was awarded an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was named the Big East’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

ASSISTANT COACHES Dallas Alexander Dartmouth ‘02 First Season

Joining Saint Joseph’s for his first season on the Hawk sideline is assistant coach Dallas Alexander. Alexander has a lengthy and diverse résumé, most recently serving as a coach with Michelle Finegan’s FSC Field Hockey Club. Prior to his tenure with FSC, Alexander was an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania, working with the Quaker goalkeepers and defensive unit. He also has previous experience at the club level with the Mystx Field Hockey Club, where he helped guide a squad that won six National Club Championships. In addition, Alexander has worked with the United States Field Hockey Futures Program for a number of years, serving as a goalkeeper site coach, a regional selector, and, most recently, a field player site coach. He has also been a fixture at field hockey camps across the country. Alexander has also served as an assistant track and field coach at La Salle University for three seasons; under his tutelage, the Explorers won multiple Atlantic 10 titles in cross country and finished second as a team at the A-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Alexander comes from a family of successful athletes and coaches. Most notably, his mother, Gwen, was a member of the 1984 bronze medal U.S. Olympic field hockey team and served as the National Team’s goalkeeper coach. As head coach at Temple University, she led her team to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a trip to the national semifinals. His father, Charles, was an NCAA Division I track & field Coach of the Year for the East Region and had formerly served as a coach for the U.S. Track & Field Pan-American Games team. His sister, Brandi, is currently the head field hockey coach at Appalachian State University. A 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, Alexander was a middle distance runner on both the indoor and outdoor track teams for the Big Green. After completing his studies in History, Human Development and Teaching, he became a full-time teacher, and is currently teaching social studies at Olney High School in Philadelphia. In addition to teaching, he is pursuing a Master’s in Organizational Development and Leadership at Saint Joseph’s. 2011 SAINT JOSEPH’S FIELD HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE 7

ASSISTANT COACHES Shannon Taylor Syracuse ‘09 First Season

Joining the Hawks as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2011 season is United States National Team member Shannon Taylor. One of the top players in the nation during her collegiate career, Taylor played from 2004 to 2006 at the University of Richmond. She notched First Team AllAtlantic 10 honors in 2005 and 2006, leading the league in goals and points in each of those seaons. Taylor set the conference record for points in a single season, pouring in 30 goals and nine assists for 69 points in 2006. That same season, Taylor was named the Atlantic 10’s Offensive Player of the Year and earned a spot on the A-10 All-Tournament team as the Spiders won their fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 championship. After a redshirt season, Taylor finished her college career at Syracuse, where she tallied 31 goals, 17 assists and 79 points on her way to First Team All-American honors from the NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com. She was named to the All-Big East First Team as well and brought home the Most Outstanding Player award at the Big East Tournament. After the season, Taylor was tabbed to play in the 2008 NFHCA Division I Senior AllStar Game and was named as a finalist for the Honda Sports Award. Since graduating, Taylor has made over 20 appearances for the National Team.

ELLEN RYAN FIELD After spending three-plus seasons playing home games off-campus, the Hawks will return to City Avenue in 2011 when they open up the brand new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Named for the recently-retired former assistant athletic director and senior women’s adminstrator, Ryan Field is equipped with a top-of-the-line synthetic AstroTurf12 surface, state-of-the-art water cannons, an irrigation drainage system, a mobile press box, and bleacher seating for 200 fans. Ryan, who retired from Saint Joseph’s this past August, served in the athletic department for 37 years and was the driving force behind the growth of the women’s athletics programs at Saint Joseph’s. She served as SJU’s first women’s basketball coach and also coached the women’s tennis team for a time. Her vision and dedication are the foundation upon which Ryan Field, and the women’s athletics program at Saint Joseph’s, are built. “When you think of women’s athletics at SJU, the first name you think of is, and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope that by putting her name on this field, the University can honor her contributions now and forever.” Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008 through 2010 seasons playing predominantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJU amassed a 12-12 “home” record at the facility during that stretch.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 55 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW TIn 2010, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program produced its first-ever Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year in senior forward Nicole McCreight. A First Team AllConference selection, McCreight kept the Hawks in the hunt all season, but unfortunately, the Crimson and Gray fell just short of a berth in the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship for the first time since 2000. The Hawks had a tough early schedule, suffering defeats to a pair of nationally-ranked teams in two of their first three games. In between losses to #3 Virginia and #11 Drexel, SJU used a seven-goal outburst to take down Bucknell, 7-3. McCreight tied a school record with four goals in the game; she is the third Hawk to achieve that feat, and the first since Katelyn O’Brien in 2004. SJU won its second game of the year in another show of offensive fireworks as the Hawks defeated Lehigh, 6-4. Senior Hannah Rogers posted her first career multi-goal game, scoring the first and last goals as the Hawks emerged with the win on the road. After starting conference play with a hard-fought 1-0 defeat at Temple, SJU ripped off three straight Atlantic 10 victories as McCreight caught fire down the stretch. Saint Joseph’s took down local rivals West Chester (3-1) and La Salle (3-2) and, after an overtime non-conference defeat at Penn, blasted A-10 foe Saint Louis, 5-2. Unfortunately for the Hawks, a loss at Massachusetts was followed by a heartbreaking overtime defeat to Lock Haven in their final home game. Richmond then won a do-or-die season finale to keep the Hawks out of the conference tournament. McCreight capped her banner year with the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award and First Team AllAtlantic 10 honors. Scoring in each of Saint Joseph’s final seven games, she also earned Second Team All-Region accolades as well. McCreight was also honored on September 21 with the league’s Player of the Week award after pouring in four goals and two assists in a three-game stretch. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Swanick finished the season among the national leaders with 178 saves, good for the fourth-highest single-season total in SJU history. Her 336 career stops put her sixth on the all-time list. Rogers and senior forward Jen Wrublesky were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic squad after the season as well. Rogers was second on the team with 16 points, and her eight assists were tied for third in the league, while Wrublesky finished her Hawk Hill career with 22 goals and 55 career points. The pair, along with five teammates, also earned NFHCA National Academic Squad honors. Senior Caitlyn Crane finished the season with nine assists, good for a first-place tie at the top of the league leaderboard. Senior Casey Fry posted career highs in goals (four), assists (two), and points (10) as well, while Crane and classmate Katie Maguire tallied their first career goals.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eightschool, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 - the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, and Xavier University. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009 while 1,181 were named to the Spring 2010 Honor Roll. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors one student-athlete per sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2009-10, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Xavier’s Kelly Ruth and Charlotte’s Adam Gross along with Lauren Olson and Whitney Roth of Saint Louis received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10 teams from last season and 25 two years ago. All 14

A-10 institutions had at least one program recognized, while twelve schools had multiple teams garner distinction. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored by the conference were represented by at least one A-10 program. Among the 31 Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10, the Ivy Group and the Patriot League had each of its member institutions receive public recognition awards for one or more programs. Among the 21 sports sponsored by the conference, women's tennis had a league-high six A-10 teams honored, while five teams earned distinction in both men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and men’s indoor track & field. Overall, Fordham had a leaguebest 11 teams recognized in conference-sponsored sports, followed by Saint Joseph’s and Xavier with seven apiece. The Atlantic 10 also boasts 65 teams with a perfect graduation rate according to the NCAA Graduation Success Report on Division I studentathletes. WHY S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY?

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as have most campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy both internally and externally. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among the nation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”). THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
