The Hawk Will Never Die!

SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team is excited for the 2011 season as it enters a new era in its first season in the Colonial Athletic Association. Returning 31 letterwinners, including seven starters, to go with a talented group of 18 newcomers, head coach Pat Cullinan is confident his team is ready for the challenge the new conference brings. “The team is excited about this opportunity and the attitude and work ethic has been fantastic,” said Cullinan. “Collectively, the fall and preseason practices, lifting and conditioning sessions, and the classroom efforts have been excellent and will positively impact the 2011 season.” The Hawks open their season on Saturday, February 12 at Lehigh and will seek out revenge after falling to the Mountain Hawks last season in a hard-fought 7-6 battle. Leading the pack will be tri-captains senior Rob Saraceni and juniors Trevor Dougherty and Griffin Ferrigan. Saraceni will lead the defense with Ferrigan backing him up in net while Dougherty will manage the midfield. “Trevor has a solid work ethic and a great knowledge of the game,” said Cullinan. “His lacrosse IQ allows him to lead by example and we will look to him to shore up the midfield this season.” Saraceni, a two-year captain, returns after suffering his second season-ending injury last year. In 2009, he received the team’s “Most Improved” award after picking up 20 ground balls, tallying 28 caused turnovers, and scoring a goal on defense. “Rob is working hard to return from his injury,” said Cullinan. “He is a great communicator and we will look for him to anchor our teams defense.” Ferrigan will look to lock things down between the pipes again this season and be more of a vocal leader behind the defense. The returning starter led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in saves per game last year averaging 12.5 and totaling 150 saves on the season. “Griffin has a strong presence in goal and has been working hard to expand his communication skills,” said Cullinan. Although the Hawks graduated last year’s leading scorer, Sean Evans, the squad returns two attackmen who accounted for 23 percent of the team’s offense in senior Scott Cullinan and sophomore Kyle Williams. Cullinan, who scored 12 goals last season, was a 2009 Inside Lacrosse Magazine All-MAAC Pre-Season selection and as a freshman was named to the 2008 All-MAAC Second Team, scoring 21 goals and dishing five assists. Williams, the team’s 2010 Rookie of the Year, was third on the team in goals (13) and assists (9) last season and, along with Cullinan, will lead a talented group of returning veterans on offense. Junior attack Matt Dougherty and sophomore midfielder Steve Dunn, who combined for 13 goals and six assists last season, will look to make a bigger impact on the Hawks scoring this year. “We have a strong, veteran attack unit, with Kyle, Matt, Scott, and Kyle Mahoney all being key contributors returning this season,” said Cullinan.

Behind the leadership of Dougherty (Trevor) and Dunn in the midfield, will be a group of athletic veterans in senior Kevin Wadach, juniors Augustus Quinzani and Bobby Hurley, and sophomore Mark Anton. “They have been working hard on their ability to attack and put consistent pressure on defenses,” said Cullinan of the veteran midfielders. At the faceoff, junior Chris Jenkins is joined by sophomore Keith Preston and freshmen Will Abbott and Anthony Cognetti. Newcomers looking to make an impact in the midfield will be freshmen Patrick Townsend and Johnny Simanski, while junior transfer from Bryant Ian Correia and freshman Billy Annesley will compete for time in the midfield. Defensively, Saraceni and senior Pat Harner will lead a close defensive unit featuring Matt Germain, Bill Bonner, Shawn Mowry, and Noah Weaver. At the defensive midfield, short sticks Daniel Lieb and Pat Sinnott return to join Dougherty (Trevor) while returning long stick midfielders are Justin Rogers, Keith Belson and Colin Roemer. Freshman Jack Moran and Army transfer Ted Hospodar will compete for minutes on the Hawks’ defense. Backing up Ferrigan in goal will be sophomore Chris Moffa, who saw action in six games last season and tallied 17 saves, while transfers Pat Kurowski and Chris Stoken will provide depth behind the veterans. Saint Joseph’s faces a challenging schedule as it enters the CAA, but Cullinan and the Hawks are excited about the opportunity. “We will face the toughest schedule in school history,” said Cullinan. “We are preparing physically and mentally to meet this challenge.” The Hawks' tough slate consists of six teams ranked in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches' preseason poll, including fourth-ranked Maryland and Brown (20) in non-conference play and four conference opponents Hofstra (9), Massachusetts (16), Delaware (17), and Drexel (18). “We are looking forward to continuing our rivalries with Delaware, Drexel and Penn State, as well as establishing new competitive relationships with Hofstra, Towson and Massachusetts,” Cullinan said. After the Hawks’ season opener at Lehigh, they return home to host Bryant (Feb. 19), one of five teams SJU will face for the first time this season. In March, Saint Joseph’s will play Rutgers at home before a series of road games at Drexel (March 9), Brown (March 12), Maryland (March 20), and Penn State (March 26). The Hawks return home in April to host Massachusetts (April 2), Hofstra (April 9), Delaware (April 16), and Penn (April 20) before closing out the season at Towson on April 30. With a tough schedule ahead of them, the Hawks have one goal in mind. “We will compete each day to the best of our abilities, strive to make daily improvements, both individually and as a team and battle through adversity as one,” said Cullinan.

Pat Cullinan enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse program in 2011. He previously spent 15 years at West Chester University, the final four as the Rams’ head coach, twice earning New York Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. At Saint Joseph’s, Cullinan has compiled a 28-64 record including a MAAC Championship appearance in 2007, which left the Hawks one game short of their first NCAA Tournament appearance. SJU was 3-5 in the MAAC last season and 3-12 overall. In 2007, Cullinan led the Hawks to a 6-12 record (5-3 MAAC). For leading the program’s turnaround from 2005 (3-11 overall/2-6 MAAC) to a 2006 record of 6-9 overall/5-3 MAAC, Cullinan was named the 2006 Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year. Cullinan was hired at SJU after serving one year as an assistant coach (2004) immediately following his five-year stint as the head man at West Chester (1999-2003). While at West Chester, Cullinan guided the Golden Rams to the ECAC Division II Championship game both in 1999 and 2002 and to the nation’s number-nine ranking in 2003 season. Cullinan also received NYCAC Coach of the Year honors for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. In addition to his on- thefield achievements, Cullinan was also the director of the Golden Ram Boys’ Lacrosse Camp and organized both a coaches and players clinic for the Chester County Youth Lacrosse Association. Prior to taking over as head coach at WCU in 1999, he spent a decade (1989-99) as a Ram assistant. He was instrumental in guiding West Chester to a pair of ECAC Division II titles in 1994 and 1998. Before making the move to the collegiate level, Cullinan started the lacrosse program at Glen Mills High School and was the head coach there for seven years (1981-87). Cullinan is a 1979 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, where he was a two-sport standout in lacrosse and football. An alternate to the NorthSouth College All-Star team as a senior, he was a four-year starter in the lacrosse midfield and twotime captain. He currently resides in West Chester, Pa., with his wife Donna and four children: Sean, Meghan, Scott and Sarah. Sean was a player and assistant coach for the Hawks while Scott is a senior on the team, and Meghan for SJU’s women’s lacrosse team, graduating in 2009. Scott’s twin, Sarah, is a senior on the Elizabethtown University women’s lacrosse team.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 55 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008. FINNESEY FIELD

Finnesey Field, currently in its 82nd year, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade happened in 2008 when the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-theart TigerTurf. Home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, the field has seen other modifications since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the original grandstand as well was the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2010 Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse season was a year for rebuilding, giving younger players a chance to step up and gain experience and create a strong bond for the future. The season began with a rough start, as the Hawks opened their season on a cold and snowy Finnesey Field and had to reschedule two more games because of immense snowstorms. The rescheduled games were played at Penn and Drexel and were followed by three more road games before the Hawks finally returned home, only to play in heavy winds and rains as the result of a nor’easter. After a season-opening loss to Delaware, the team faced off against Lehigh on a snow-plowed Franklin Field where the Mountain Hawks retaliated from the previous season’s 9-8 SJU victory with a 7-6 win. The Hawks saw two scores apiece from senior Charlie Gorman and sophomore Matt Dougherty while sophomore Griffin Ferrigan had a career-best performance in net with 23 saves. Despite falling to Bellarmine and Drexel on Vidas Field, Ferrigan totaled 27 saves in the two games, accumulating 66 saves in just the first four games before getting injured. The Hawks closed out non-conference play with losses to Rutgers and Penn and suffered a loss at home to 14th-ranked Brown on a flooded home field. Freshman Artie Marrapese stepped up his play against Penn and Brown to be named MAAC Player of the Week for March 15. He assisted three goals, netted one, picked up 11 ground balls, and won 17-of35 in faceoffs in the two games. The Hawks dropped their conference opener to 2009 MAAC Champion Siena, and fell to Marist, but things looked up for squad as it headed into April. SJU hosted Canisius in an overtime thriller on the first Saturday in April. After being down 8-5 at the end of the third quarter Marrapese and senior Sean Evans each scored to put

the Hawks within one. After another Golden Griffin goal, both scored again in the last two minutes to knot the game and send it to overtime. Unfortunately, Canisius scored 37 seconds into the first overtime period to steal the 11-10 win. The heartbreaker left the Hawks hungry for a win as they hit the road and earned their first victory 11-5 over Virginia Military Institute. Freshman Kyle Williams had a career-high three goals and two assists while Marrapese and Scott Cullinan each added four points in the win. Saint Joseph’s returned home to celebrate Senior Day and its seven graduating seniors with another victory, this time over Detroit. After being down 6-4 in the beginning of the fourth, Evans and Williams sparked a 7-1 SJU run to take the win, 10-7. Evans tallied four points on his Senior Day, as did Williams. Meanwhile Ferrigan returned to good health, making his presence in net known as he stopped 18 shots against VMI and 15 against Detroit. He tallied 36 saves in the final three games, including losses to Mount St. Mary’s and Manhattan and the Hawks’ 9-8 victory over Wagner in which he totaled 17 saves with six in the fourth quarter and a key save in the final minute. Overall, the squad finished the 2010 season out strong and looks to be a tough competitor in its first season in the Colonial Athletic Conference in the 2011.

Janet Greder, in her seventh year as the university’s director of educational support services for student-athletes, directs a multi-faceted program of academic support that affords student-athletes the opportunity to succeed both in the classroom and on the field. In addition to overseeing the program for all of SJU’s student-athletes, she works directly with the men’s basketball program. Greder came to SJU after three years as an academic coordinator at the University of Iowa. From 1997 to 2001, she was the assistant academic coordinator at Creighton University. A native of North Platte, Neb., she received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1986 and a master of science degree in counseling from Nebraska-Omaha in 1997. She resides in Drexel Hill, Pa.

Suzanne Pearce Learning Specialist

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Saint Joseph’s ‘02 –Third Year

Suzanne Pearce is in her third year as the department’s learning specialist. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education from Saint Joseph’s in 2002 and then received her master’s degree for certification as a reading specialist from SJU the next year. Originally from Westville, N.J., Pearce came to Saint Joseph’s after serving as a program specialist at the Kingsway Learning Center. She resides in Springfield, Pa., with her husband, Al.

Janet Greder and Ken Krimmel monitor academic progress of the student-athletes in compliance with SJU and NCAA rules and regulations. The office is a liaison between the athletic department and the faculty, while serving as a secondary academic advisor to the student-athletes, helping with registration, among other issues. The office also assists student-athletes in career development and runs time management and study skills workshops throughout the academic year. All freshman student-athletes, along with select upperclassmen, are required to attend study hall four nights a week. The office, located in the Science Center 113, has eight individual study rooms, each equipped with a computer. Coordinated through the Office of Educational Support Services for Student-Athletes, Saint Joseph’s student-athletes utilize numerous support programs available through the University. Those programs include the Learning Resource Center, Career Services, the Counseling Center and the Writing Center. The services available to student-athletes; career choice assistance, academic skills workshops, individual tutoring and personal development, allow for success in the present while preparing for the future. The office is aware of the challenges today's student-athletes face both on and off the playing field. To prepare them, the Office of Educational Support Services for Student-Athletes organizes and facilitates a Life Skills Program. This is designed to provide studentathletes with educational experiences that will assist them in bridging the gap from high school to college and from college to professional life. The program is designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The Life Skills Program focuses on the individual as a whole – academically, athletically, and emotionally – and on the changing needs and skills of that individual in the years during and after college. Among the wide range of topics covered are time management, stress management, resume writing and interviewing, alcohol and drug awareness, and financial planning. The office also oversees the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which acts as liaison between the University community and the student-athlete body. Members are selected by respective coaches or team members at the beginning of each academic year. SAAC works to encourage and promote student-athletes to be student leaders that represent individual varsity teams and the entire athletic department as a vocal, integral part of the greater Saint Joseph's community.

THE UNIVERSITY

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides acrossthe-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-ofthe-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to becomethemostpopularextracurricularactivities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared.TheUniversityboastsanexcellentrecordof placing its graduates in first-time jobs, profession-

al schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia – only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
