2011 SEASON OUTLOOK As it was in 2010, change will be a prominent theme for the Hawks men’s soccer team as the program enters its second season under Don D’Ambra. In his first year as coach, the team showed improvement and played many close matches. The Hawks look to continue to make those strides in 2011 and the work has already begun. “We showed signs of improvement this past spring" said D'Ambra. "Our young players got a lot of minutes on the field resulting in a boost of their confidence.” D'Ambra knows experience cannot be coached, which is why it was important for the team to gain as much as they could during spring practice. The Hawks’ 2011 roster will feature four senior and four junior returning players, with a majority of the team consisting of underclassmen. The senior leadership will blend with a solid core of returning players and a talented group of nine freshmen. Leadership will not be hard to find this season with returning captain Tom Smart and junior Jake McPaul anchoring the defense. “Tom is an extremely hard worker who will bring a good work rate and urgency to the game. Jake is a very good vocal leader who organizes the team defensively,” said D'Ambra. Undoubtedly, rising to the top of the competitive Atlantic 10 Conference will be a challenging process; but that will continue to be the goal of the program. The coaches will rely on the steady play of the defense and a revamped offensive attack.

Goalkeeper Michael Moulton

Captain Tom Smart

Losing the top goal scorer from each of the past four seasons in Colin Baker will hurt, but the loss will create opportunity for the younger players. “Our offense is the area where we must see improvements in order to reach our potential this season” said D’Ambra. “We have some solid young forwards in Alex Critzos, Michael Glazer and Ryan McFadden who have a lot of upside once they adjust to this level." The Hawks will rely heavily on McPaul and Smart along with junior Tim Brennan to bolster the defense. “Our defenders are our most experienced players and we have added some depth to this area with our incoming freshmen,” D’Ambra said. Sophomores Matt Macey and Brian Reynolds add quality experience and look to hold important roles in front of the goalkeeper. Behind the defense, returning in goal this season will be sophomore Michael Moulton and junior Drew D’Ottavi. “Our goalkeepers are steady and need to play consistently,” said D’Ambra, adding that both of them played a significant amount in their freshman campaigns. Moulton led the Atlantic 10 last season in saves per game and is eyeing an improvement this season. “Our focus is on results, although we were competitive last season, we fell short too many times," explained D'Ambra. "We have added some talented players with a lot of heart, which will enhance our team. We hope to increase our offensive productivity, which will make a big difference in the end results." If D’Ambra and his charges can find the back of the net on a consistent basis, the Hawks will surely find the win column as well.”

HEAD COACH Don D’Ambra Head Coach Second Year

Don D'Ambra enters his second season as the head men's soccer coach at Saint Joseph's. One of the most decorated former SJU student-athletes to be named a head coach on Hawk Hill, D'Ambra was introduced as the fourth head coach in the program's history on April 15, 2010. In his first season at SJU, he led the Hawks to an overall record of 2-15-0 and 1-8-0 in the Atlantic 10, as they snapped a 24-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Iona and won their first conference match since 2008 in a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island. D'Ambra returned to Saint Joseph's in 2010 after a successful coaching and playing career with the Philadelphia KiXX of the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League). He played a total of 16 seasons in the MISL, and the last 14 with the KiXX. In 2002, he assumed duties as the head coach of the KiXX, and served as vice president of soccer operations/head coach, while continuing his playing career. D'Ambra helped the KiXX to two MISL championships, as a player in 2002 and as the player/coach in 2007. He was a four-time All-Star and is the KiXX' all-time leading scorer, amassing 388 goals and 905 points. In eight seasons as head coach, he totaled 119 wins, which is the most in the team's history. While at Saint Joseph's from 1990-94, he was a Regional All-America First Team selection and remains the only player in Hawk history to earn the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award, winning it in 1993. D'Ambra holds the SJU career records for goals (41) and points (102), as well as the marks for goals (15) and points (38) in a season (1993). He was inducted into the school's Men's Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000. "We are pleased and honored to welcome back Don D'Ambra as our new head men's soccer coach. Don is committed to the SJU mission to enhance the overall student-athlete experience," said director of athletics Don DiJulia on D’Ambra’s appiontment. "Don's passion and commitment to excel will encourage the success of our student-athletes and the soccer program from its solid foundation built by his predecessors - Tom Turner, Jack Ruggero and Jack Dunn. He brings energy and a vision for the future of the Hawk soccer program. Don made us proud during his playing days here and no doubt will make us even more proud during his tenure as our head coach." D'Ambra owns a USSF "A" coaching license and has been involved with coaching youth teams, conducting coaching clinics and organizing skills and development programs for over 14 years. He possesses international playing experience, having been a member of the United States National Futsal Team since 2002. With 15 international caps, D'Ambra has participated in the World Championships and the Pan American Games. D'Ambra replaced Tom Turner, who retired after 23 seasons as the Hawks' head coach, and had been an assistant coach on previous coach Tom Turner's staff at SJU from 1996-99. A native of Philadelphia, D'Ambra attended North Catholic High School and graduated from Saint Joseph's in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in food marketing. The 38-year old D'Ambra and his wife, Leslie, have three daughters - Samantha, Kylie and Milana.

Morris’ professional career with the KiXX has spanned 11 years and he is a seven-time All-League selection. The team's captain for the past eight years, he earned the MISL's Defender of the Year award twice and helped the KiXX to league titles in both 2001 and 2007. He has played in over 300 games and scored more than 150 goals in his career thus far. Along with playing for the KiXX, Morris became a Philadelphia KiXX camp instructor in 2001 and a site director after his first two years. Morris, a native of Philadelphia, owns more than 30 international caps as a member of the U.S. National Futsal Team, and has participated in the World Championships, the Pan-American Games and a CONCACAF qualifier.

Kevin Nuss is entering his first season as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team. He joins the staff after serving as an assistant at Rutgers UniversityCamden where he helped the Scarlet raptors reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history posting a program record 16 wins. He also served as the director of player development at Cherry Hill FC, after completing a two-year tenure in the same position at Highland Youth Soccer Club. During those three years, Nuss coached and oversaw six teams that reached nine separate New Jersey State Cup Final Fours. A 2008 Rowan graduate, Nuss began his playing career at Camden County College in 2003 and posted a 0.89 goals against average, which ranked fifth in the nation. He earned adidas/NSCAA Regional All-America First Team honors while also being recognized as a first-team selection for both Region XIX and Garden State Athletic Conference. Nuss then started two years at William Patterson before finishing his collegiate career at Rowan. In addition to his collegiate career, he has also played with a pair of USL Player Development League teams, the Delaware Dynasty (2007) and the Ocean City Barons (2005). He also served as the goalkeeper and manager of the Sewell Soccer Club (2003-present) of the SJASL.

Rob Brown Director of Soccer Operations First Year

Rob Brown comes to Hawk Hill entering his first year as Director of Soccer Operations. He previously served as the general manager at the Suburban Sports Training Center in Conshohocken, Pa. Brown has worked in the sales department of both the Philadelphia Kixx (MISL) and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. He also spent time as the webmaster and news media coordinator for the Rockford Rampage. In addition to his business experience, Brown has also spent time as an assistant for the women’s soccer team at Arcadia University and Council Rock South High School. Brown earned an associate's degree in sport management and a bachelor's degree in business management from Strayer University in 2009.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 56 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

FINNESEY FIELD Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University as it enters its 83rd year. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade happened in the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Home to the men’s and women’s soccer teams, men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, the field has seen other modifications done to it since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium.

2010 YEAR IN REVIEW The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team finished its 2010 season with a

record of 2-15-0 overall and 1-8-0 in the Atlantic 10 under first-year head coach Don D’Ambra. Although it was a rebuilding year for the program with

nearly 50 percent of the squad comprised of freshmen (15), the team showed marked improvement from 2009.

The Hawks fired more shots with 144 to its total of 118 from the previ-

ous year and held its opponents to 38 goals, improving from 51 allowed in 2009.

The squad opened its season with two home games, a loss to Penn in

its season opener and then fell 3-2 in a hard fought match to Towson. The

Tigers scored two goals in the first half and the Hawks came back to knot the game at the 52:18 mark. The Hawks’ defense only allowed the Tigers fours

shots in the second half but Towson scored in the 78th minute to take the win.

The Hawks then hit the road for four games including two in the

Pittsburgh Nike tournament. They dropped a 1-0 match to Duquense and

suffered losses to Pittsburgh, Cornell, and Villanova before returning home for two games.

Snapping a 24-game losing streak the Hawks defeated Iona, 1-0, for

their first win of the season. Freshman Patrick McGlynn dribbled a ball down the center of the field in the second half and blasted it into the lower right

corner of the net for his first career goal and the game-winner. In goal fresh-

man Michael Moulton made nine saves including two big saves in the last 10 Moulton was named Philadelphia Soccer Six Co-Player of the Week for

taking over goalkeeping duties in the second half.

three conference matches on the road to Temple, Xavier, and Dayton.

shutout. After a scoreless first half, senior Colin Baker took a cross from the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. He sealed the win in the 78th minute, as he tapped in a rebound off the Rams goalkeeper.

Baker was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his performance

against Rhode Island while Moulton was tabbed Soccer Six Player of the Week for his nine saves against URI and his 10 saves in the Hawks’ 1-0 loss to

Massachusetts two days later. The Minutemen scored the lone goal of the game in the 80th minute on a backwards pass that was fired high into the

Legendary Jack Dunn, the first-ever coach of the Saint Joseph’s soccer team, has done more for the Hawk program than any one individual. The team’s head coach from 1958 through 1975, Dunn compiled a career record of 120-57-23 (.658) in his 18 years at the helm, leading SJU to the NCAA Tournament in 1966, 1971 and 1972. The 74-year-old Dunn played on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and went on to a long playing career in the old German-American Professional League. Dunn, who also served as an assistant coach with the Hawks in the mid-90s, was one of 20 inaugural inductees to the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, pro-

fessional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
