The Hawk Will Never Die!
2012 CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
Under the direction of head coach Mike Glavin, the men’s cross country team returns 17 letterwinners and adds seven new faces to open up the 2012 season. The 2011 squad saw remarkable success as it placed in the top third of five meets last season, including a first-place finish at the Charlotte Duels, a third-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Regionals. Led by 2011 NCAA Championship participant and graduate Kevin McDonnell, the Hawks demonstrated an undeniable growth toward development and, according to Glavin, that growth is here to stay due to the limitless amount of commitment found among the squad’s 25 runners. “The guys are dedicated, and it’s phenomenal,” said Glavin. “There are so many facets to coaching, but that part of the job, worrying about whether or not they’re out working or not, is not a problem that I have. If anything, my problem is that they want to run too much, but from a coach’s point of view, that’s a better problem to have.” Saint Joseph’s will look to continue its progression toward success under the experience and leadership of senior co-captains Patrick Donnelly and Jon Mazzio. Donnelly, a transfer from Missouri, joined the team in January of his sophomore year and did not waste any time making an impact. Last season, Donnelly finished fourth on the squad and 42nd overall with a time of 25:56 at the IC4A Championships and placed seventh overall (15:53.80) to help Saint Joseph’s win the Charlotte Duels. The senior also placed in the top half of both the Paul Short Invitational, finishing 192nd out of 402 runners, and the Atlantic 10 Championships, placing 50th out of 124 runners. “In terms of quality, the type of depth that Patrick adds makes us as deep of a squad as we’ve been in at least a decade or two,” stated Glavin. “We’re much better this year in depth than we have been in the past.” Mazzio, a 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team selection out of West Chester, Pa. is described by his head coach as a “phenomenal story” for the Hawks and a “legitimate force in the northeast.” Mazzio was a five-time top five finisher for Saint Joseph’s in 2011, finishing first on the squad at both the Paul Short Invitational and the IC4As and second with both a seventh-place overall finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships and 24th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals. The senior standout also placed third at the Charlotte Duels, proving to be a crucial element to the team’s first-place finish at the meet. “We go out and find people who we think are going to work to be as good as they can be, and we’re banking as coaches that as good as they can be is going to be better than average,” discussed Glavin. “Jon was an above-average two-miler out of high school and last fall he was All-Conference, All-Mid-Atlantic Region, and All-IC4A Northeast. A guy who was a little better than average just isn’t supposed to do that.” Graduate student Dan Roark and seniors Dave Manion and Andrew Townsend round out the final year veterans for the 2012 squad. Roark came to the Hawks two seasons ago from Quinnipiac and has been solid as a welcomed addition to the Saint Joseph’s family of runners. Roark finished in the top five for the Hawks in five of his six meets, including notching personal bests in both the

5K (15:51.87) at the Charlotte Duels and the five-mile (25.52) at the IC4A Championships. According to Glavin, Manion and Townsend are alike in the sense that they run cross country to prepare for track and field, but both runners have found success is cross country. Manion undoubtedly found himself a huge part of the team’s success last season, placing second on the team and 24th overall with a time of 28:10.97 at the Delaware Invitational 8K. Townsend ran the first three races of the season for the Hawks in 2011 and notched season bests in the 5K (17:05.40) at the Blue/Gold Classic and the 8K (28:41.32) at the Delaware Invitational, where he finished third on the squad and 28th overall in a field of 46 runners.

2012 CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
At the core of the cross country team’s returning group are 12 juniors and sophomores, highlighted by juniors Michael Rankin, Aaron Leskow, and Tommy O’Kane and sophomores Paul Szulewski and Logan Mohn. Rankin’s 2011 season highlight came as he notched a personal best in the 8K at the Atlantic 10 Championships with a time of 25:18, finishing 23rd overall. Leskow competed in three races, placing second at the Charlotte Duels and recording a personal best 8K time of 25:06 at the Princeton Invitational, before being sidelined with an injury. The junior standout was the “number two man” on the squad until the injury and, assuming good health, will work to fill the void left from McDonnell’s graduation. O’Kane finished in the top half of four races last season and placed third on the squad and sixth overall at the Blue/Gold Classic, the first meet of the 2011 season. Szulewski was named the 2011 Rookie of the Year for his 18th-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The then-freshman landed in the top five for the Hawks five times last season, including a first-place squad and fourth-place overall finish at his debut collegiate race at the Blue/Gold Classic, where he clocked in at 16:00.50. In each of the final four races of the season, Szulewski and the team both finished in the top third. Mohn ran in seven meets and finished in the top five for the Hawks six times. The highlights of his season came when he finished second of all Hawks at both the Blue/Gold Classic where he finished fifth overall and the Paul Short Invitational, where he crossed the finish line in 118th place out of 402 total runners. “In that depth I’m talking about,” explained Glavin, “we’ve got three juniors who are going to be really good. Some kind of
2012-13 Men’s Cross Country & Track
nod has to go to Mike, Aaron, and Tommy. These are juniors who have contributed last year. Then there are two sophomores, Paul and Logan. As freshmen, they proved that they are significant factors in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Those two are coming back as sophomores now understanding the training to get stronger.” Rounding out the Hawks’ experience will be junior Max Margiotta and sophomore Brady Deckert, each of who ran three races last season including the IC4A Championship race, juniors Ryan Anderson and Sean Staltari, and sophomores Steven Butenewicz, Michael Cassidy, and Thomas Harrington. The Hawks will see new talent in graduate student James McBride, a transfer from Millersville University. McBride ran for four seasons at Millersville, and Glavin believes that this experience will further add to the squad’s drive toward success in 2012. “James adds an enormous amount of qualitative depth to this team. I think that with the group he’s now training with that he will get remarkably better by the end of this year.” Six talented freshmen from six different states join the squad in Rhode Island Academic All-State selection Michael Coleman, two-time Pennsylvania All-State First Team selection Quinn Davis, two-time Delaware All-State selection Scott Davis, Massachusetts League All-Star selection John Egan, 5K record-holder at the Loyola School in New York Liam Murphy, and three-time Ocean County, New Jersey champion Joe Tront. The men’s cross country team demonstrated a significant increase in improvement last season, and with Coach Glavin’s belief in a 2012 squad that will see 17 letterwinners return along with seven new faces of possibility, this season already appears to be a season that will be remembered.

2012-13 TRACK AND FIELD PREVIEW
The 2012-13 men’s indoor and outdoor track and field team returns 35 letterwinners from last season, highlighted by 18 IC4A qualifiers and 15 individual meet champions. With the addition of 14 newcomers to a squad that saw tremendous growth and progress in 201112, head coach Mike Glavin holds a high level of expectation for success this season. Led by a quartet of senior captains in Garrett Barbalinardo, Patrick Donnelly, Jon Mazzio, and Andrew Townsend, Saint Joseph's has a definite chance at remarkable success during the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
The Hawk Will Never Die!
HURDLES The junior trio of Derrick Henry, Griff Roberts, and Jamie Rodgers returns to lead a core group of veterans in the hurdles this season. Rodgers led the team in the outdoor 400m hurdles (54.58) while Henry and Roberts posted solid times in the outdoor season as well. “Derrick is an intermediate hurdler and I have a feeling that this will be a breakthrough year for him,” stated Glavin of his three-year hurdler. “He’s training consistently with Roberts and Rodgers and I think that this will be the breakout year for him. Roberts walked on as a freshman and Rodgers came out for the team last year, and they all run within a second of each other. If they keep that development going, we could put three guys in the outdoor finals this year.” Rounding out the hurdlers will be sophomores Nicholas Beninato and Matthew Sutorius. Sutorius led the Hawks in short hurdles last season with team-best times in the indoor 55m and 60m hurdles as well as the outdoor 110m hurdles. SPRINTS After an explosive sophomore season in which he led the team in the indoor 55m, 60m, 200m, and 300m and outdoor 100m and 200m, junior Jon Eisemann returns as Saint Joseph’s “go-to” sprinter. Described by his coach as “the number one short sprinter” at Saint Joseph’s, Eisemann qualified for IC4As in the outdoor 100m dash last season and proves to be a threat all the way up to the quarter-mile. “Jon is hardworking,” said Glavin. “If he feels like you’re not giving him enough work in one area in which he thinks he can improve, he adds that in by himself.” Sophomore Tyler Gallen posted team-best times in both the indoor and outdoor 400m and the indoor 500m. Gallen won the 500m at Giegengack with a time of 1:04.11 while Roberts took the indoor 600m for the Hawks and won the 500m at Thompson with a time of 1:07.97. Junior Tyler Dougherty will also return to the sprints after placing in the top three on the team in all but one of his sprinting events last season. Leading the long sprints will be captain Barbalinardo, who qualified for the IC4As with a time of 500m (1:05.10) at PSU Nationals last season. Joining him to compete in the long sprints will be junior Peter Larmann and sophomores Matthew McGarvey and Brendan Robert. Beninato, Henry, Sutorius, Rodgers, juniors Christopher Kinney and Michael Yap, sophomores David Furman and Nick Pedano, and freshmen Christopher Banks and Alec Peabody will also look to add a plethora of talent, both old and new, to the sprinting events. DISTANCE In the 2011-12 indoor and outdoor track seasons, the distance events saw 17 returning runners break through IC4A qualifying times in 11 different events. In addition to individual IC4A goals, there were also 15 champions in nine different events at the combined outdoor and indoor individual meets. In terms of IC4A qualifiers, Steven Butenewicz qualified in the indoor 800m, captain Townsend in the outdoor 800m and indoor 1000m, Dave Manion in the indoor 1000m, Logan Mohn in the indoor

1000m and mile and outdoor 1500m and steeple, Aaron Leskow in the outdoor 1500m, and Kevin McDonnell in the indoor 3000m and 5000m and outdoor 5000m and 10,000m. Townsend finished second in the Atlantic 10 last season in the 800m at the outdoor finals and scored highly at the IC4As in the 1000m. “Andrew has become a factor in the 800m in the Northeast,” said Glavin, “and I’m expecting that he’ll end this year as one of the four or five fastest half-milers in Saint Joseph’s history.” Captain Mazzio qualified for the IC4As in three events: the indoor 3000m and outdoor 5000m and 10,000m. “Mazzio is a phenominal story for us and is what you would call the prototypical Hawk athlete,” said Glavin. “We don’t always get these hardcore stars. We go out and find people who we think are going to work to be as good as they can be, and we’re banking as coaches that as good as they can be is going to be better than average. Jon was an above-average two-miler out of high school and he is now 14:23 for the 5000 last spring, which is an outstanding time.” The 4x400 team of Henry, Robert, and Gallen, the 4x800 team of Manion, Butenewicz and Matthew McGarvey, and the DMR team of Tommy O’Kane, Michael Rankin, Dougherty, and Jamie Gentile also qualified for the indoor IC4As. In terms of individual meet winners for the indoor season, McGarvey won the 800m at Jack Pyrah, Mohn won the mile at the Gotham Cup, McDonnell won the 3000m at Geigengack, and Paul Szulewski won the 3000m at the PSU Relays. The 4x400 team of Henry, Robert, and Gallen won three different meets, with their fastest time coming in at 3:17.89 at Geigengack. Roberts and Kyle Lampart were a part of the 4x400 winning team at Thompson while Gentile and Beninato were part of the 4x400 winning team at Delaware. “Kyle is one of the many guys we’ve had through here who has yet to break through, but he’s got one more year left and he fights for it and does everything to deserve success, “ said Glavin. “This is the season for it.” The 4x800 team of Manion, Butenewicz, and McGarvey won the PSU Relays.

2012-13 TRACK & FIELD PREVIEW
“Steve [Butenewicz] is another one of those half-milers who is going to make the 4x800 team really good,” said Glavin. “It’ll be one of the top at the IC4A East Indoor Championships and it’ll probably be one of the top ten relays on the Northeastern Seaboard.” According to Glavin, the solid sophomore group of Gallen, who placed fourth in the 400m at the outdoor A-10s, McGarvey and Robert will prove to be an offensive threat in the relay department this season. “McGarvey will be on that 4x8 and the other two freshmen both made the championship 4x4, so all three are quarter-milers that are really high level,” said Glavin. “We have a really good sophomore class, and they are going to make a real impact this season.” During the outdoor season, the 4x100 team of Henry, Dougherty, Gallen, and Eisemann, the 4x400 team of Gallen, Barbalinardo, and Robert. “Check any results from the end of the season and Garrett [Barbalinardo] was on the 4x400m team because he wants to be on that 4x400 and is having no part in being kicked off,” said Glavin of his senior captain. “He is a tough, hard-training competitor who can now handle the workouts and goes all in. The interesting thing about him is that he has very little time for anybody else who is not all in, which makes a good leader.” The 4x800 team of Townsend, Butenewicz, and Manion also qualified for the IC4As. “Dave [Manion] is another one of those half-milers who will again be a hinge in the 4x800m relay. Last year he ran a 1:53 in a relay split and he’s one of those guys who always finds a way to fight his way back on.” In terms of individual meet winners for the outdoor season, McGarvey won the 800m at the Lafayette 7-Way, Mohn won the 3000m steeple at the Lafayette 7-Way, Manion won the 800 at the Delaware Open. The 4x100 team of Henry, Dougherty, Gallen, and Eisemann won the Delaware Open while the 4x400 team of Gallen, Butenewicz,
Roberts, and Henry won the Delaware Open. McDonnell won the 5000 at the Penn Relays and 10,000 at the Atlantic 10 Championships and has indoor and outdoor eligibility left this season. “Kevin comes in and has a work ethic that is like, “Here’s where I am, but can I get there? If i get there, how long will it take until I can get there?” He’s staring at the possibility and goal of making the NCAA finals.” McDonnell made the NCAA preliminaries two years in a row, but only 12 runners from the entire eastern half of the nation are selected to travel to the NCAA finals. “He wants to be among the top 24 individuals who make it to the NCAA finals,” said Glavin. Glavin demonstrates nothing short of praise for the following two upperclassmen, captain Donnelly and graduate student Dan Roark. Donnelly, a transfer from Missouri, joined the team in January of his sophomore year and did not waste any time making an impact. “The improvements in him as an athlete have been phenomenal for us, and he’s a type of competitor that gives us depth on this squad.” Roark, a transfer from Quinnipiac, missed making the NCAA preliminary round in the 3000 steeple, a race with 35 barriers, by 1.5 seconds last season, proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the event. “Dan transferring here was a great thing for us. He has personality and character and he keeps things lively. At the same time, he ran a 9:05 in the steeple, so he’s high in quality and has sheer, dogged determination.” Transfer graduate student James McBride, juniors Ryan Anderson, Max Margiotta, Sean Staltari, sophomores Michaelel Cassidy, Brady Deckert, Thomas Harrington, and 11 newcomers will round out the middle distance runners for the Hawks.
With a solid group of veteran experience combined with the spark of new talent, the 2012-13 track and field season promises to be one for the record books. Senior captain Andrew Townsend finished second in the 800m at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships last season.

JUMPS The Hawks will return two jumpers in senior Vinh Nghi To and Yap. To will return for both the long jump and triple jump while Yap will focus his efforts on the long jump. “Vinny walked on as a jumper, and he and Yap work together all the time. They make sure that they get certain stuff from me and do it on their own during one part of the day and then run with the sprinters at another part of the day. He simply wanted to continue what he was doing from high school.” Entering the mix of jumpers will be freshman rookie, Peabody. “Alec is a highly talented sprinter with a phenomenal mastery of his long jump. He will be a good sprinter and jumper for us.” ---

ASSISTANT COACH Teddy Meyers A ssistant Coach – 6th 6th Season Saint Joseph’s ‘07
All-Atlantic 10 Cross Country (2005, 2006) Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track 5000m Champion (2006) Atlantic 10 Indoor Track 5000m Champion (2006) Six-time Academic All-Atlantic 10 (2006 cross country, indoor & outdoor track, 2007 cross country, indoor & outdoor track) Teddy Meyers, a 2007 graduate and 12time letterwinner of the men's track and cross country teams, enters his sixth season as assistant coach of the Hawks. At Saint Joseph's, Meyers built an impressive résumé of accomplishments on and off the track. Meyers was a two-time Atlantic 10 indoor 5,000 meter champion, two-time All-Atlantic 10 cross country honoree, and A-10 outdoor 5000 meter champion. On top of that, Meyers posted outstanding grades at SJU, earning Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors for cross country, indoor and outdoor track for the 2005-06 and 200607 campaigns. The academic honors are the most received by any track athlete at Saint Joseph's. In May 2007, Meyers graduated with his bachelor's degree in economics. The Bethel Park, Pa. native is currently enrolled in the two-year MBA program at SJU's Haub School of Business.
FINNESEY FIELD Finnesey Field has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University as it enters its 84th year. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade happened in the summer of 2008 as the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Home to the men’s and women’s track and field squads, the field has seen other modifications done to it since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand and the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. Additionally, men’s and women’s lacrosse began in 1993 and have called Finnesey home since their inception, while the women’s soccer team began playing there in 1996. The field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007. Overall, the site has seen 1,181 games entering the 2012-13 academic year, and SJU teams have put together a total record of 532601-48 over 83 years.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for 57 years, having celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die.” Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk has won numerous accolades and was a nominee for induction to the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2011 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW
The Hawk Will Never Die!
The goal entering the 2011 cross country campaign was to finish among the conference’s elite and improve on the 2010 finish of seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championships. The Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad, led by head coach Mike Glavin, did just that, instilling a blend of youthful spark and veteran experience, en route to a third place finish at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships. Showcasing a younger core of runners, the Hawks opened the 2011 campaign at the Blue/Gold Classic in Pennington, N.J. Freshman Paul Szulewski led SJU with a fourth-place performance as he completed the 5K course in 16:00.05. Classmate Logan Mohn followed up in fifth while sophomore Tommy O’Kane crossed the finish line in sixth. After a strong start from the young talent, the whole squad made the trip to Charlotte to compete at Frank Liske Park, the eventual location of the 2011 A-10 Championships. Led by captain Kevin McDonnell’s first-place time of 15:25.07, a time that would eventually earn him A-10 Performer of the Week, the Hawks would go 5-0 at the Duels. Sophomore Aaron Leskow finished in second and junior Jon Mazzio took third to round out the top three spots. A majority of the team took the following week off from competition before heading to the 37th annual Paul Short Invitational. At the invitational, Mazzio paced Saint Joseph’s with a 107th-place finish at 25:36. Mohn followed him up in 118th and Leskow grabbed 136th place. McDonnell continued his strong season as he finished second at the Princeton Invitational at West Windsor Fields the following weekend. Leskow followed with an eighth-place time as Szulewski finished 26th and Mohn came in at 34th. The Hawks swept the A-10 weekly awards as McDonnell picked up Performer of the Week for the second time in 2011 and Szulewski garnered Rookie of the Week. With all of its previous success, SJU entered the Atlantic 10 Championships confidently and composed. As expected, McDonnell paced the Hawks with a second-place time of 24:23.6 to earn a spot on the All-Conference team. Joining him was All-Conference selection Mazzio, who took seventh at 24:42.2. Following up in 18th, Szulewski was named Rookie of the Year for his performance as he helped Saint Joseph’s to a third-place finish at the A-10s. Following the conference championships, the Hawks traveled to Princess Anne, Md. to compete in the 10K NCAA Regionals. Led by McDonnell’s fourth-place finish of 30:40.9, Saint Joseph’s finished the weekend seventh of the 25 teams in competition. Mazzio backed McDonnell up with a 24th-place effort, while Mohn took 51st. The squad closed out the year at the IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Hawks finished fifth in a field of 15 teams, and Mazzio led the Hawks for the second time
Paul Szulewski was named the 2011 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year

with a 25th-place finish, clocking in at 24:43. Szulewski was the next to cross the finish line in 35th with senior Dan Roark closely behind in 37th.For the second year in a row, McDonnell competed in the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, Ind. As only the second Hawk to compete twice in a career, he represented SJU with a 159th-place finish out of 252 harriers, clocking in at 31:18.1. The 2011 men's cross country season was a successful one, pairing a number of high team finishes with a great deal of individual success. As the senior leaders depart the squad, the future is in good hands with the young harriers who proved themselves capable in 2011.

Saint Joseph’s University
2011-12 TRACK REVIEW Led by a talented group of seniors, the 2011-12 Saint Joseph’s men’s track season saw a great deal of team success in addition to outstanding individual performances. Senior Kevin McDonnell led the Hawk contingent, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals for the second consecutive year in the 10,000m. The men kicked off the season in December at the ninth annual Jack Pyrah Invitational where senior David Smith took first in the 500m and freshman Matthew McGarvey won the 800m. Freshman Tyler Gallen was an additional bright spot in the opener as he earned second in the 500m while senior Dylan Wenik finished third in the 800m. From there, the squad traveled to Princeton, N.J. to compete at the New Year’s Invitational. The 4x400m team of Derrick Henry, Brendan Robert, Gallen and Smith earned the top spot as the final runner crossed the stripe at 3:21.96. Freshman Thomas Harrington impressed many on the weekend with his third-place time in the mile and was eventually awarded the A-10 Rookie of the Week (12/11) for his efforts. After returning from winter break, sophomore Tyler Dougherty paced the Hawks at Delaware’s Thomson Invitational with a victory in the 400m. Trying a different combination in the 4x400m, Griff Roberts, Jorry Senestant, Adam Drastura and Kyle Lampart combined to take the crown with a mark of 3:25.66. Grabbing his first win of the year, McDonnell turned in a first-place performance in the 3000m as Gallen took first in the 500m on the second day of the Geigengack Invitational. Continuing its dominance in the relays, SJU also took the crown in the 4x400m at 3:17.89. Two weeks later, the Hawks made the trip to URI’s Mackal Field House to compete at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships. Led by freshman Logan Mohn’s second-place finish in the mile, Saint Joseph’s earned sixth place as a team. Helping to score for SJU was a trio of freshmen Gallen (500m), Steven Butenewicz (800m) and Paul Szulewski (3000m) who each finished fourth in their events. Both the 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams went on to score for SJU as they each captured third. Closing out the indoor season, junior Andrew Townsend took third in the 1000m at the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. Mazzio finished 22nd in the 3000m while McDonnell came in 17th in the 5000m. Saint Joseph’s opened the outdoor season on a high note as McGarvey won the 800m and Mohn won the 3000m steeplechase at the Lafayette 7-Way. The team carried its momentum through the distances as sophomore Aaron Leskow earned second in the 1500m with
Townsend coming in third. Also finishing second on the weekend was the 4x400m team of Henry, Wenik, Robert and Gallen. From there, SJU grabbed 12th of 27 at the 47th annual Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. Robert led the way as he finished fifth in the 400m while Mohn took eighth in the 3000m. The men also relied on their consistent relay teams as the 4x200m team of Henry, Dougherty, Gallen and Jon Eisemann finished in third. A week later, the squad split to compete at the Delaware Open and the Bucknell Invitational. At Delaware, Dave Manion took the crown in the 800m while both the 4x100m and 4x400m teams won their events. At Bucknell, McDonnell highlighted the weekend, taking third in the 10,000m as junior Jon Mazzio cracked into the top 10 with an eighthplace finish. Placing fifth in the 800m, Wenik led the charge at the Larry Ellis Invitational. He then went on to better his weekend as he teamed up with Gallen, Robert and Garrett Barbalinardo to take fifth in the 4x400m. One week before the A-10s, McDonnell shined on the opening day of the Penn Relays, taking the crown in the college division 5000m. Mazzio was the next Hawk to cross in 20th. On that Saturday of the relays, the 4x800m team finished in the eighth spot in a field of 27 teams. Led by McDonnell’s victory in the 10,000m at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, the Hawks finished seventh, just two points out of sixth. After winning the preliminaries in the 800m, Townsend returned to the finals to finish in second despite bettering his time. Leskow scored by finishing fifth in the 1500m while the 4x800m team of Fenimore, Manion, Logan Hohs, and McGarvey combined to take third. The relay team wrapped up its season in the 4x800m with a fifthplace finish at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. Townsend, Butenewicz, Hohs and Manion showed up to turn in a season-best 7:31.12, less than three seconds out of first. Following the IC4As, McDonnell represented Saint Joseph’s at the NCAA Regionals, which took place at the University of North Florida. Improving on his 23rd-place finish from 2011, he took 19th overall as the top 12 moved on to the NCAA Championship. The Hawks relied on the squad’s strong senior leadership for results on the track, but the younger crop of Hawk runners showed its potential and will be expected to use the lessons it has learned to help take the program to the next level in the coming years.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a fiveyear Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its studentathletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which

The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others.
• To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others. • To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner. • To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

Saint Joseph’s University
THE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service.
From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other
2012-13 Men’s Cross Country & Track
advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.
PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-ofthe-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
