2011‐12 YEAR IN REVIEW The Saint Joseph's men's rowing program began a new era in 2011‐12 with Mike Irwin taking over as head coach. The Hawks posted a number solid results to give promise for the future. At the season‐opening Jesuit Invitational hosted by Saint Joseph's, the Second Varsity 8 set the stage by winning its race, defeating Georgetown and Fairfield. The Varsity 8 finished third, but it was a good showing for the Hawks in their first race under Irwin. Competing in the largest field ever at the Murphy Cup on the Cooper River, the Second Varsity 8 again stood out for the Hawks, as it placed second among 12 teams. SJU also saw its "B" boat take fifth place in the Second Varsity 8, thus giving the Hawks two boats in the final. SJU hosted a tri‐meet with Marietta College and Williams College and came out ahead of both crews in the Second Varsity 8 while finishing second in the Varsity 8. In the Knecht Cup, the Second Varsity 8 continued to excel and place third in a tight race among five strong teams. The Varsity 8 gave a glimpse of its potential when it rowed two solid races to advance to the Grand Final for the first time since 2009, but ultimately finished fifth. The Lightweight 8 provided one of the highlights of the season when it placed second in the highly‐competitive SIRA Regatta. The Hawks finished ahead of Delaware and just behind Michigan State in their season debut. The Second Varsity 8 fell short of its goals as it rowed in the Second Final to finish seventh overall, while the Varsity 8 was disappointed with its 12th‐place fin‐ ish. Returning home to compete against Philadelphia's schools in the Bergen Cup, the Lighweight crew competed as the Hawks' Second Varsity 8 and were faced with a strong headwind. SJU took third in that race while the Varsity 8 struggled to a fourth‐place finish. The Hawks closed out the season at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta with two notable efforts. The Lightweight 8 finished its year on a high note by cap‐ turing a bronze medal in that event for the third time in the last four years. The Second Varsity 8 also made its way into the Grand Final for the first time since 2008. A pair of Hawks were honored for their excellence in the classroom. Seniors Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart were both named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All‐Area Team for the second year in a row.

2012‐13 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S ROWING MEDIA GUIDE 9
SJU ROWING TRADITION Although not the oldest sport at Saint Joseph’s University, the Hawk row‐ ing program has established itself as arguably one of the most successful in the school’s long and storied athletics history. Making its mark on Philadelphia’s famed Schuylkill River since 1954, SJU rowing celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003‐04. First emerging as a club sport in 1954, rowing received official varsity sta‐ tus in 1959 and immediate respect when Al Rosenberg was named head coach. Rosenberg had helped the United States to a gold medal at the 1954 Pan Am Games and a silver at the 1958 European Championships. He guided the SJU program for just two seasons before taking over national team boats, but laid the groundwork for future success. Legendary coach Joe Toland took over for Rosenberg and established SJU as one of the East’s most successful programs from 1961‐73. Toland helped SJU to six championships in Bergen Cup competition, as well as three President’s Cup crowns. His varsity heavyweight eights advanced to the Dad Vail final in 12 of his 13 seasons. The V8 accomplished the greatest feat of the early era of Hawk rowing by winning the Dad Vail in 1970 and the team captured the Bratton Trophy as the overall points champion in 1971. Six of Toland’s former Hawks would go on to represent the U.S. in international competition. Toland relinquished the reins of the Hawk program to one of his former Hawk standouts, Jim Glavin. A member of SJU’s 1970 Dad Vail champs, Glavin would go on to coach several junior national team boats. With the face of the University changing, the rowing program returned to club status following the 1975 season, but continued to produce strong crews throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Rowing returned as an official varsity sport in 1991 and the program quickly reclaimed its status among the nation’s best. In 1999, the Hawk men penned, arguably the greatest feat in school history, matching the great 1971 Hawk squad by winning the Dad Vail points title for the second time in school history and competing at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River in London, England. The University affirmed its commitment to rowing by breaking ground, along with St. Joseph’s Prep, on a state‐of‐the‐art boathouse along the Schuylkill River. Named in honor of Robert Gillin, Jr., construction was com‐ pleted in time for the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta and provides a permanent home for the Hawk rowing programs. Former SJU standout Drew Hill took over as head coach of the SJU pro‐ gram in 2003 and immediately made his presence felt. Sixteen Hawk boats advanced to the Dad Vail finals (15 claiming medals) in his first five seasons, and SJU matched the 1971 and 1999 squads by capturing the men’s points title in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
SJU Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Teti was the head coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, guiding the U.S. to the bronze medal in Beijing.
Individually, 12 former Hawks have competed internationally and seven have been inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame, including Glavin, Toland, Richard and Donald Flanigan ‘60, Joe Henwood ‘68, Chris O’Brien ‘92 and Mike Teti ‘78. Arguably the best‐known oarsman in America, Mike Teti was a top Hawk rower, graduating from SJU with a sociology degree in 1978. “Saint Joseph’s gave me the opportunity to compete and also the oppor‐ tunity for a great education,” Teti says. “I owe SJU a great debt for all of the opportunities I received.” From 1977‐93, Teti rowed on 11 national teams, including three trips to the Olympic Games. He won 24 national championships, a gold medal in the men’s eight at the 1987 World Championships and a bronze medal in the same event at the 1988 Olympics. He was named the 1987 United States Rowing Male Athlete of the Year. Teti achieved even greater notoriety as a coach, guiding the U.S. men’s open eight squad to an unprecedented three straight world championships. He also coached the men’s four with coxswain to world championship gold. In 1996 he led the lightweight men’s four to an Olympic bronze medal before being named USRowing’s Head Men’s Sweep Coach, the highest coaching honor in the country, in October of that year. Teti became the U.S. Olympic coach following the 2000 Games, and led the men’s eight boat to gold in Athens in 2004, a feat that the United States had not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, Al Rosenberg, led the Americans to victory. Teti also guided the U.S. Men to the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Teti is currently the head coach of the men’s crew team at the University of California and was inducted into the National Rowing Federation’s Hall of Fame in 2010. A more recent Hawk to make his mark on the international scene was 2011 graduate Ryan Pawling. As a freshman, Pawling coxed the Adaptive Mixed Four squad to fifth place in the World Championships in Munich in 2007, which qualified the crew for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The 1971 crew, under legendary coach Joe Toland, captured the points title at the Dad Vail Regatta.

SJU ROWING TRADITION
Saint Joseph’s Rowing received official varsity status in 1959, led by head coach Al Rosenberg, who would go on to guide the U.S. national teams to great success.
The Hawks won the Varsity 8 at the 1970 Dad Vail Regatta (above). Also at that regatta, SJU’s Varsity 4 captured Dad Vail gold for the second year in a row.
(Right) Saint Joseph’s won the Dad Vail Regatta men’s points title and competed at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1999.
Saint Joseph’s won the Bergen Cup in 2008, capturing the Varsity 8 race for the first time since 1978. The Hawks claimed the city championship with the victory.
Coach Joe Toland established Saint Joseph’s as one of the East’s most successful programs from 1961 to 1973.

JESUIT INVITATIONAL Saint Joseph’s Rowing established the Jesuit Invitational in 1999 and it has become a major race in the collegiate rowing season, featuring solely Jesuit col‐ leges. The Jesuit Invitational is held every year in March on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Men’s Varsity 8 champion, while the Robert Gillin, Jr., Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Women’s Varsity 8 winner. The Cannonball Trophy is given to the overall team champion. It is named in honor of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, who had his leg shattered by a cannonball while defending Spain from an attack by France. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded to the school with the highest combined points in the day’s races. It is a traveling trophy which the winner returns every year. The winning team receives a small cannonball that is theirs to keep as a reminder of their championship performance.

THE HAWK
Don DiJulia Vice President for Athletics Athletic Director
SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others. • To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others. • To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self‐discipline, responsibility, decision‐making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first‐class manner. • To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”. Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55‐year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame. 2012‐13 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S ROWING MEDIA GUIDE 18
THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tra‐ dition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to pro‐ duce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full‐time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally‐recognized aca‐ demic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tra‐ dition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One‐on‐one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across‐the‐board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehen‐ sive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and grad‐ uate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which hous‐ es the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000‐square‐foot international academ‐ ic center featuring state‐of‐the‐art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addi‐ tion, a Service Learning program allows stu‐
dents to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and interna‐ tional opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area sen‐ ior citizens and the Hand‐in‐Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student‐run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the subur‐ ban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two coun‐ ties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cul‐ tural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close‐knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big‐time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first‐time
jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part‐time work and internships provide real‐world experi‐ ences, the kind which delight future employ‐ ers. And with its many diverse student organ‐ izations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on‐campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre‐law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives stu‐ dents access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cul‐ tural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia ‐– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
