2013 SEASON OUTLOOK CROSS COUNTRY

The impressive core group of juniors that led the way in 2012 will look to make their last run a strong one this year as nine seniors return for their final season on the Saint Joseph’s women’s cross country team in 2013. Under the direction of head coach Kevin Quinn, the Hawks will look to their veterans for leadership en route to making a run at the Atlantic 10 Championship. At the helm of the squad will be senior captains Emma Slattery and Lizzy Barrett. Coming off of one of the most impressive campaigns in program history, 2012 Atlantic 10 AllConference selection Slattery returns after leading the Hawks with four top-ten finishes last season. A 2012 CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict, Atlantic 10 Academic AllConference, and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honoree, Slattery led the Hawks in five meets, including both the Atlantic 10 Championship and the ECAC Championship where she earned All-East honors. Described by Coach Quinn as “meteoric,” Slattery’s relentlessly competitive appearance on the cross country scene last season provided a glimpse of what Hawk fans can expect from the senior co-captain Senior Emma Slattery in 2013. A four-year member of the squad, Barrett has made undeniable advances on the cross country scene due to her dedication and work ethic, evident in the fact that she competed in seven of SJU’s eight total meets last year. The co-captain who is known for her solid contributions as a leader at both meets and practices alike finished second on the squad in her first four meets of the season last year. Senior Lizzy Barrett Senior Erin James enters her final campaign for the SJU as Saint Joseph’s returning leader in the 6k (21:47). James demonstrated extreme commitment to the squad last season when, after overcoming an injury that left her sidelined midway through the season, she led the Hawks at the MidAtlantic Regional and finished second for SJU at both the Atlantic 10 and ECAC Championship. Perhaps the most anticipated 2013 return comes with redshirt senior Maureen O’Donnell. In her final year of eligibility after captaining the squad yet redshirting last season, O’Donnell enters

her fifth year as a Hawk. After a 2010 sophomore campaign in which she led the Hawks in every race and a 2011 junior season in which she broke the 18-minute mark in the 5k, O’Donnell enters this season with the fastest career 5k time on the squad (17:57.70). Senior Hannah Fuller rounds out Saint Joseph’s core of top-five veterans. After leading the Hawks in their first meet of the season last year with a fourth-place finish, Fuller was sidelined by injury but still finished in SJU’s top Senior Maureen O’Donnell five in her final four meets, including a 61st place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional. If healthy, the 2011 All-Conference selection will prove to be essential in scoring for SJU. With an exceptionally solid top five across the board, Slattery, Barrett, James, O’Donnell, and Fuller will be expected to lead the Hawks in 2013. Additional veterans in seniors Darcy O’Connor and Paige O’Neill and junior Taylor Oskowiak will round out the upperclassman experience for the Hawks. Sophomores Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka had ample time to familiarize themselves with the collegiate cross country scene as both Hawks competed in seven of the squad’s eight meets last season. Both Hehir and Radzwilka earned points for Saint Joseph’s at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship Junior Taylor Oskowiak and are expected to be both contributors and competitors this season. Joining the returning sophomores will be Emily Chaundy, Kathryn Cols, and Tess Doggett, all of whom have two or three meets on the college level under their belts. Also in their second seasons on the cross country squad, seniors Hannah Brown and Erin Giampietro will be expected to run well for the Hawks. Incoming talent in sophomore Melissa Donnelly and freshmen Sydney Coughlin (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), Alexandra Fiesel (Wilton, Conn.), Meghan O’Keefe (Glen Mills, Pa.), Jacqueline Pignataro (Budd Lake, N.J.), and Sarah Regnault (Green Brook, N.J.) will round out the 2013 squad.

2013-14 SEASON OUTLOOK TRACK AND FIELD

Highlighted by the return of 11 career ECAC participants and 14 career Atlantic 10 point-scorers, the Saint Joseph’s women's track and field team returns 32 letterwinners and welcomes 13 newcomers this year. With an emphasis on dedication in the weight room, head coach Kevin Quinn believes that his squad is at the top of its game in both speed and strength as the Hawks head into the indoor portion of the 2013-14 season. “After seeing these kids in the weight room, there needs to be a shoutout to Steve [Notebaert] for the terrific work that he has done with them,” beamed Quinn. “The more force you put into the ground, the more you get out. They’re stronger, which is going to make them run faster.” Quinn expects great leadership from his five captains – distance standouts Lizzy Barrett and Emma Slattery, long-sprinters Jaclyn Kogut and Katie Pratt, and short-sprinter Mercedes Yanora. This core group of Hawks possesses both the talent and drive necessary for success in 2013-14.

SPRINTS Senior captain Mercedes Yanora will lead the short sprints while senior captain Jaclyn Kogut and sophomore Dannah Hayward will head the long sprints as the Hawks will look to attack on all levels, from the indoor 60m and 4x100m to the outdoor 500m and 4x400m. “Yanora provides excellent leadership,” said Quinn of his short-sprint captain. “Her strength is probably going to be in the 200m and 400m.” Yanora led the Hawks in both the 100m and 200m at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship last year and also ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay that both scored at A-10s and competed at the ECAC level. Yanora boasts PRs in the 200m (25.60) and 400m (59.48) heading into her final campaign on Hawk Hill. Balancing out Yanora’s experience will be second-year talent Carly McGowan. McGowan was a consistent factor on the 4x100m relay last season and owns PRs in the 60m (8.08) and 200m (26.11). “I think they’re going to be significantly better,” said Quinn of his top short-sprint duo. At the front of the long sprints will be the four members of the school-record holding indoor 4x400m relay (3:49.60) in Hayward, Kogut, junior Marina Rufo, and senior Katie Pratt. Hayward was one of the most accomplished freshmen in the entire conference last season. The rookie scored in four different A-10 events last year to own nine conference points after just one year of collegiate competition. SJU’s 2012-13 Rookie of the Year also earned three of SJU’s five total ECAC points last year and holds the school record in the indoor 500m to return as a definitive consideration in individual conference rankings.

Senior Jaclyn Kogut

Junior Marina Rufo

Kogut is also expected to make a strong run in her final sea-

son. The senior ran on three ECAC-level relays last year and scored

at A-10s. The captain’s enthusiasm and training have been constant, and Quinn is confident that his senior is ready to go.

“In the 400m and 800m group, Dannah and Jackie are our

stars,” said Quinn.

Rufo proved to be a brilliant surprise for the Hawks last sea-

son, highlighted by her role on the school-record breaking 4x400m relay.

“Marina came out last year and was a gift,” beamed Quinn

of the transfer that has stepped up to be a vital asset for the Hawks. Pratt is coming off of a knee operation and will most likely

not appear until mid-January, according to Quinn. However, the senior captain and anchor of the team’s fastest relays on a consistent basis will look to make a run in her final outdoor season.

Quinn also believes in the potential of sophomore Jenna

DeAngelo.

“She came back this year very fit, and she’s going to do very

well,” said Quinn.

Sophomore Alana Whitmarsh return to the long sprints

while freshmen Courtney Foster, Ashley Gerald, Katie Koss, and

Angelena Minniti will also be expected to make an impact in the sprints this year.

2013-14 SEASON OUTLOOK TRACK AND FIELD

HURDLES Juniors Kayla Charles and Georgia Mason will lead the hurdles in 2013-14. Charles owns school records in both the outdoor 100H (14.47) and the indoor pentathlon (3,724 points) while Mason owns the school record in the indoor 60H (8.84). “We have one with the indoor school record and one with the outdoor school record, so we should be pretty solid there,” said Quinn of his junior hurdlers. “Charles fell in love with the pentathlon. I think her pentathlon is going to be significantly better, and she scored last year. I’m fully expecting that her hurdles are going to be significantly better than last year, which would make her a potential scorer. Georgia is a terrific hurdler, and our greatest chore there is to keep her healthy. The weight training is going to help her too. But if she does the exercises that she’s supposed to do for her hamstring, she’ll be really good. She’s really good.” Sophomore Dannah Hayward will also return for her second season in the hurdles. The sophomore holds the school record in the outdoor 400H (1:00.11) and represented Saint Joseph’s with a 23rd-place showing at the 2012-13 USA Junior National Qualifier. Quinn is also impressed with the leadership of senior Mia Greer, from who he expects a standout season. “Mia gives excellent leadership not just on the track but in the weight room and in general,” said Quinn. “She’s going to run much better this year.”

Junior Kayla Charles

DISTANCE Extreme depth and experience in the form of seven talented seniors should give the Hawks a phenomenal advantage in the distance events this year. Leading the charge will be seniors Lizzy Barrett, Hannah Fuller, Erin Giampietro, Erin James, Darcy O’Connor, Maureen O’Donnell, and Emma Slattery. Coming off of a brilliant senior campaign on the cross country scene, Barrett returns as the only senior to have placed at the ECAC level last season, taking home a seventh-place finish in the mile in the indoor meet. “Lizzy is going to be a force,” said Quinn. “She learned how to race last year. She has confidence and is going to have a great year.” The standout factor about this particular group of distance competitors is the competitive nature among the group. They overcome injuries and fight through and, if they can remain healthy, Fuller, James, and Slattery will be significant factors on both the A10 and ECAC levels this year. O’Donnell (37:48.63), Giampietro (39:18.70), and O’Connor (40:58.73) are the Hawks go-to trio in the 10,000m as all three have competed at the A-10 level. “I love that class,” said Quinn of his seniors. “I love that senior distance group.” Also in the mix for the Hawks will be sophomore Lauren Hehir, who had a breakthrough cross country season this fall and who has already represented the Hawks on both the A-10 and ECAC levels. “Lauren is going to be good in the indoor 1000m and mile and outdoor 1500m,” said Quinn. “She is going to be a force.” Seniors Hannah Brown, Lisa Chen, and Paige O’Neill add to the senior leadership while junior Taylor Oskowiak, sophomores Emily Chaundy, Kathryn Cols, Tess Doggett, Melissa Donnelly, and Sara Radzwilka and freshmen Sydney Coughlin, Alexandra Fiesel, Meghan O’Keefe, Jacqueline Pignataro, and Sarah Regnault will all look to make their marks on the middle and long distance events.

3,000M STEEPLECHASE Saint Joseph’s school-record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, redshirt senior Maureen O’Donnell returns for a much anticipated fifth year for the Hawks in 2013-14. O’Donnell owns the record in 10:32.58 and took fourth in the event at A-10s in her sophomore season. O’Donnell redshirted both the indoor and outdoor seasons last year but, after a successful fall season on the cross country course, the veteran is prepared to make a serious run in her final campaign as a Hawk. SJU’s returning leader in the event, senior Erin James took fifth at A-10s and 15th at ECACs last season. Between O’Donnell and James, the Hawks boast two veterans that could make significant marks for SJU this outdoor season.

JUMPS A strong trio of versatile juniors in Gabriella Becattini, Brianna Hunt, and Kati Polaski will lead the jumps section this season. “Becattini is working very hard, and Polaski and Hunt are both terrific,” said Quinn. “We are expecting great things.” Of the returners, Hunt stood out last season as the thensophomore qualified for the 2013 ECAC Indoor Championship in the high jump and went on to take seventh at the 2013 A-10 Outdoor Championship. The junior’s PR in the event stands at 1.70. Becattini was sensational in the triple jump last year, posting new PRs in both the indoor (11.19m) and outdoor (11.40m) seasons. The junior won the event at the Delaware Outdoor Open, took home the bronze at Widener, and placed 16th at the prestigious Penn Relays Polaski was outstanding in the triple and long jumps last indoor season, taking home multiple top-five finishes in both events. Polaski also impressed as the anchor of multiple outdoor 4x100m relay groups, highlighted by the squad that won the Widener Invitational. Four freshmen in Katie Gross, Rachel Kline, Kiersten Moylan, and Emely Ramirez round out the jumps.

Junior Brianna Hunt

OVERALL “I have one of my rules: what you do in practice, you do in a meet. These kids are running their practices – the same things they did last year - significantly faster. Remarkably faster. It should just carry over. There’s nothing secret about that.” Saint Joseph’s will open the 2013-14 indoor season at Haverford’s Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday, December 7. “We are going to improve on our showings from last year,” beamed Quinn of his squad. “I have such high expectations.”

HEAD COACH KEVIN QUINN Kevin Quinn Head Coach - 29th Season Saint Joseph’s ‘62

Kevin Quinn enters his 29th year as the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s women's track and cross country programs in 2013-14. Quinn served as the director of the track and cross country programs for the last 47 years, from 1966 to 2013. A 1962 graduate of Saint Joseph's, Quinn joined the Hawk athletic staff as the head coach of the men's cross country and track squads in the fall of 1966, a position he held for 23 years. In 1985, he added the title of women's cross country and track head coach to his résumé, and is now entering his 29th season in that capacity. In July of 1989, Quinn was appointed to the position of assistant athletic director for facilities and was promoted to associate athletic director for facilities, a position from which he retired, in 2001. Last season, Quinn coached Dannah Hayward, a participant at the USA Junior National Championship, and Emma Slattery, who became the first female Hawk to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors since 2001. He also coached three ECAC All-East team selections and one Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection in a track season that saw six school records broken. An outstanding educator, teacher, and motivator, Quinn has led the Hawks cross country and track programs to great heights during his tenure. His men's cross country squads won two Big 5 titles, while the 1984 men's track team turned in a seventh-place finish at the IC4A Championships. ASSISTANT COACH CLAIRE HEWITT THE HAWK Claire Hewitt Assistant Coach - Sixth Season Penn ‘05 Claire Hewitt returns for her sixth season as assistant coach of the Saint Joseph's women's cross country and track teams in 2013-14. Hewitt (nee Duncan) took over the day-to-day coaching responsibilities of the women's cross country team in 2012. A 2005 graduate of Penn, Hewitt was a three-time Academic All-American and fouryear letterwinner for the Quakers. She completed her degree in political science and environmental studies while captaining the Penn cross country and track squads. Hewitt adds valuable experience to the Hawks programs having coached for three years at the high school level prior to coming to Hawk Hill in 2008. She spent two years as head girls' indoor and outdoor track coach at Germantown Friends Academy (2006-08) while also serving as assistant cross country coach. Prior to Germantown, Hewitt was the head girls' cross country coach as well as the head boys' and girls' indoor and outdoor track coach at Friends Central School in 2005-06. Hewitt resides in Philadelphia with her husband, former Hawk harrier, Rob Hewitt '04.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has

been flapping its wings for over half a century. The Hawk, which celebrated its gold-

en anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”

since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate

because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history.

It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports

Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD BELMONT PLATEAU

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 700 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf that was laid down in 2001 was replaced with new, stateof-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. Overall, the site has seen 1,193 games entering the 2013-14 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 547-595-51. One of the largest municipal parks in the United States, Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill and are among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's running community. The Belmont Plateau serves as the SJU cross country’s home course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross country course and is considered one of the most challenging in the country.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW CROSS COUNTRY

Emma Slattery

The squad at the start of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship

Under the direction of head coach Kevin Quinn and led by the veteran experience of a core group of juniors, the Saint Joseph's women's cross country team demonstrated a tremendous amount of growth and improvement in 2012. After showcasing younger talents in the earlier half of the season, the Hawks relied on the talent of their upperclassmen in addition to the spark of a pair of dynamic freshmen to place in the top half of their final four meets. The Hawks kicked off their season on September 1 with a secondplace finish at the TCNJ Blue/Gold Classic in Pennington, N.J. Junior Hannah Fuller, a 2011 All-Conference selection, led Saint Joseph's with a fourth-place individual finish in the 5k (18:48.50) while juniors Elizabeth Barrett and Emma Slattery crossed the finish line fifth and seventh, respectively. Two rookie Hawks rounded out SJU's top five as freshman Lauren Hehir finished her first collegiate 5k in 19:34.80, good for 12th place, and senior Erin Giampietro completed her first collegiate race in 20:10.20. Saint Joseph's stayed in its home state for the final three weekends of September, running in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at State College, Pa. (Sept. 8), Temple's Friend Invitational here in Philadelphia (Sept.14), and the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa. (Sept. 28). A ninth-place team finish at the Harry Groves 6k saw the first glimpse of Slattery's would-be dominance as she led all Hawks with a 33rd-place individual finish out of 120 runners, crossing the finish line in 22:43. While Harry Groves provided the Hawks with an opportunity to run on the eventual course of the Mid-Atlantic Regionals, the Friend Invitational allowed the younger half of the squad to run locally on the course of the Belmont Plateau at West Fairmount Park, the eventual site of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship. Led by junior Emily Chappell's fourth-place finish (20:51.38), Saint Joseph's took third at the meet as Chappell and classmate Darcy O'Connor finished in the top ten for the Hawks. Sophomore Taylor Oskowiak crossed the finish line in 15th overall while freshman Erin O'Leary and junior Hannah Brown each fared well in their second collegiate races, rounding out SJU's top five. SJU closed out the first half of its season with its biggest race of the

Sara Walker

year, the prestigious Paul Short Invitational. The Hawks ran against 40 other teams comprised of 360 runners en route to a 27th-place finish in the Gold Division of the 6k race. Slattery again paced the Hawks, this time with a 90th-place finish (22:01) while Barrett finished 113th. After being sidelined for the first three races due to injury, junior Erin James crossed the finish line in 22:17, good for 114th-place in her season debut. With the finish, James demolished her previous personal best in the 6k by 1:28, foreshadowing the impact she would make in the latter half of the season. Team and individual success continued in the form of a seventhplace group finish out of 25 squads at the Princeton Invitational. For the third meet in a row, Slattery led all Hawks with an eighth-place finish (21:54), crushing her personal best in the 6K by seven seconds to prove that she was only getting faster heading into the A-10 Championship. In her second consecutive race and fourth of the season, Barrett also placed in the top ten. With the experience, talent, and success that accompanied this season's squad leading up to the most significant meet of the season, an impressive showing at A-10s was expected - both on the individual and team levels. Slattery lit up the Belmont Plateau as she continued her dominance with an eighth-place finish to lead the Hawks to an eighthplace team finish out of 16 teams. The junior standout led all Hawks for the fourth consecutive time, crossing the finish line in 18:03.3, a new personal best in the 5k that would come to stand as the fastest 5k time of the season. Slattery ranked 17th after completing the first mile in 5:30.0 but increased her strength and speed, improving nine places for the eventual eighth-place finish en route to A-10 All-Conference and All-Academic honors. "Emma gives first-class effort in everything she does, so it is no surprise that she is All-Conference in athletics as well as academics," said Quinn. "She is a relentless and ferocious competitor and a joy to work with." In her first A-10 Championship, James finished 19th overall while Fuller, Chappell, and Barrett rounded out the top five for the Hawks.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW CROSS COUNTRY

Two pleasant surprises in both the championship meet and season as 2012 CROSS COUNTRY AWARDS a whole came in Hehir and fellow freshman Sara Radzwilka, both of whom added points for SJU as they finished 91st and 92nd, respectively. Quinn TEAM AWARDS believes that the future of these rookies will be promising on Hawk Hill. MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMER: Emma Slattery "This was their `Welcome-to-college-cross-country year,'" the head SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD: Erin James coach said of his standout freshmen. "They will both be valuable contribuVASQUEZ AWARD: Sara Walker tors and competitors on next year's team." DORIE LEAHY AWARD: Emily Chappell Following the A-10s were two of the most integral meets of the seaACADEMIC AWARD: Emma Slattery son: the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on November 9 and the ECACs on November 18. ADDITIONAL AWARDS At the regional meet, James came through with a 39th-place finish in CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team: Emma Slattery the 6k event to help the Hawks to an 11th-place finish out of 31 teams. Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team: Emma Slattery James ran the race in 21:47, a new personal best in the 6k that would go on Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team: Emma Slattery to be the fastest 6k time of the season. Fuller crossed the finish line next for the Hawks in 61st with a personal-best 22:13 in the 6k. Both James and Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team: Emma Slattery (8th) ECAC All-East Team: Emma Slattery (7th), Erin James (11th) Fuller overcame injuries to help the squad at this point in the season. "Erin and Hannah were both sorely missed during the middle of the USTFCCCA National Academic Team Award: Saint Joseph’s season but returned to make significant contributions to the late season *Note: Cross Country shares awards with Track and Field success of the team," boasted Quinn. Chappell and Barrett placed next for the Hawks, Barrett in her sixth meet of the season and Chappell in her fifth consecutive race. Chappell finished the 6k in 22:15, slicing 29 seconds off a personal best that she had set just four weeks prior at Princeton. Barrett would place 80th en route to tying for a team-best in most meets ran with six. "Lizzie has made great advances in cross country," said Quinn. "Thought of more as a track athlete, she was a solid contributor and leader, not only in meets but practice as well. Emily, through her hard work and determination, has made herself into a major contributor to the team's success." On November 17, the Hawks competed at the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship. The race, which was held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., saw 101 runners from 11 different universities compete. Led by Slattery's seventh-place finish, the team finished fourth overall, placing ahead of all other A-10 teams to improve six places from its overall team finish from 2011. Slattery crossed the finish line with a 5k time of 18:09.0, just 1.2 seconds behind the fifth-place finisher and 18.5 seconds behind the meet winner. The junior finished the season having led all SJU runners in five different meets while placing in the top ten in four of her six meets. "Meteoric may best describe Emma's appearance on the SJU cross country scene," beamed Quinn. "With no high school cross country experience and missing all freshman and half of sophomore cross country due to injury, in a year and two weeks she went from winning her debut cross country race, the open race at Princeton in October of 2011 to All-Conference and a threat to win it all next year." As could be predicted, juniors James, Fuller, Barrett, and Chappell rounded out the Hawks' top five with strong times, displaying nothing short of the utmost promise of their senior seasons. "With an impressive group of returning upperclassmen and the anticipated return of Maureen O'Donnell, the Hawks are looking forward to 2013 as a season of great expectation and anticipation," said Quinn.

2013-14 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TRACK AND CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 45

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 13-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The league will add one more to its ranks in 2014 when Davidson College becomes the 14th institution to join the A-10. In 2012-13, the Atlantic 10 continued to be proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 13 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of seven states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's

Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. will see the conclusion of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships. Date: November 2

Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 3,255 student-athletes in 2012-13. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified student-athletes. In 2012-13, nearly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Saint Louis’ Alejandro (Alex) Aleman, Shane Basen of Charlotte, Nicole Cherok of Duquesne and Sadie Wonders from Dayton were named Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. The Postgraduate Scholarship program has been so successful that the Atlantic 10’s Directors of Athletics recently voted to more than double the number of recipients to 10 individuals and increase the value each recipient receives to $7,000. The program will expand beginning with the 2014 honorees. The Atlantic 10 Conference once again earned high marks in the latest Academic Progress Rates (APR). This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 984 average, 10 points above the national average. The Atlantic 10 had 49 teams rated with perfect scores, up from 40 last year, and there were 106 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, there were 184 conference teams with APR scores at or above the national average, representing 76 percent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average at or above the national average. There were 54 A-10 programs that earned national APR public recognition for scores ranked in the top 10 percent of their respective sports in APR scores and the league ranked fourth among all Division I conferences in number of teams publically recognized by the NCAA. The Atlantic 10 boasted a second-place ranking in the single-year Graduation Success Rate (GSR) among all Division I leagues that was released in the Fall of 2012. Measured in a six-year window, 90 percent of freshman enrolling in an A-10 institution in 2005 graduated. Twelve of the league's institutions were above the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and four of those programs, Dayton, George Washington, Richmond and Saint Joseph's were all over 90 percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Top 10 in men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball in the single-year GSR. The league is ninth nationally in men's basketball, graduating at a 74 percent rate, nearly 7 percent above the national average. In women's basketball the league ranks sixth with an incredible 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004 freshman class, 10 percent higher than the national average. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, pro-

fessional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
