2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

Coming off a season in which the Hawks posted a 6-9 overall record under first-year head coach Taylor Wray, the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team returns 25 letterwinners for the 2013 season. After picking up their first win against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent as a member of the conference, Wray and his squad are looking forward to the potential and opportunity that this season can bring. "Our staff and our players couldn't be more excited for the upcoming season,” said Wray. “The guys have worked very hard to improve themselves over the course of the off-season and I look forward to seeing that progress in action as we compete in 2013."

ATTACK

Led by the veteran experience of junior standout Ryan McGee and senior Kyle Williams, the team’s top two scorers from last season, the Hawks return six letterwinners to the attack in 2013. McGee controlled the offense last season and emerged as a leader as he led the team in points (52) and goals (38) and tied for the team lead in assists (14) and ground balls (35). Williams started all 15 games for SJU in 2012 en route to netting 13 goals and tying with McGee for the team lead in assists. Sophomore Matthew Sarcona saw action in just two games last season due to injury but, if healthy, could prove to be a vital threat on the offensive end. Junior Brian Urban, sophomores Matthew Franchak and Kyle Bruun, and freshmen Matt Blasco, Donny Finn, Alex Hardwick, and Pat Swanick will also look to compete for minutes on the attack.

MIDFIELD

Junior Johnny Simanski will lead the charge in the midfield after coming off of an impressive sophomore campaign in which he netted seven goals and dished out seven assists in 15 starts. Sophomore Michael Dougherty started six games in his rookie season and averaged a goal per start to go with four assists and nine ground balls. Dougherty’s energetic play will coincide with the play of senior Kyle Mahoney and freshman Richard Gabelman to complete the defensive unit. Juniors Will Abbott and Billy Annesley, SJU’s two face-off men, are both coming off of successful seasons at the X as Abbott turned in a .462 face-off percentage and Annesley posted a .367. Senior Steve Dunn, junior Jake Hall, sophomores Josh Cavanaugh and Rob Watts, and freshmen Blair Bonner (a redshirt transfer from St. John’s University), Kevin Clarke, Chase Elliott, Bryan Garrahan, and Joe McErlean will round out the midfield.

DEFENSE

Wray will depend on the leadership of seniors Ted Hospodar and Brian Brinkmann to anchor his defense in 2013. Hospodar picked up 21 ground balls and caused six turnovers last season while Brinkmann’s versatile play allowed for him to dish out two assists in a win over Mercer. Sophomore Will Farrell, who led the team in caused turnovers (16) and ranked third on the team in ground balls (27), classmate Kevin Barrow (15 gb), and junior Jack Moran (9 gb) will complete the defensive unit. Sophomores Dylan O’Donnell and Guy Talarico and freshmen Sam Kotler, Kevin Miller, Dan O’Malley, Cameron Riley, and John Winchell will also be relied on to defend the Hawks. Four players will compete for minutes between the pipes in the position opened due to the graduation of Griffin Ferrigan. Senior Chris Moffa sports a .419 career saves percentage and has played over 485 minutes as a varsity goalkeeper while classmate Pat Kurowski, sophomore Dustin Keen, and freshman Stone Wharton will all work for time in goal.

OVERALL

On the season as a whole, Wray believes that the 2013 Hawks can experience great success. "We always have a very competitive schedule, both in conference and out, and it was made even tougher this year when I made the decision to go to 16 regular-season games,” said Wray. “All we ask our players to do is prepare to the best of their ability and compete in every situation. If we can do that all year, we'll be successful.”

Taylor Wray enters his second season as head coach for the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team. Wray was named the head men’s lacrosse coach at SJU on August 1, 2011, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s history. Last season, Wray and his staff led an inspired group to a six-win season and its first victory against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent as a member of the conference. With just nine wins in the previous three seasons combined, Wray led a 2012 Hawk team that tied for eighth in the country in overall improvement, led the nation in win percentage increase, and tied for fourth in the nation in biggest jump in total number of wins (six). Wray came to Saint Joseph's after serving as an assistant coach at Lehigh University for four years. Wray possesses a wealth of high-level playing and coaching experience, having played collegiately at Duke University and professionally in the National Lacrosse League. Wray joined the Lehigh staff in September 2007 and served as the defensive coach and recruiting coordinator. The Mountain Hawks made great strides during his tenure and in 2011, registered the nation's eighth biggest improvement according to LaxPower's computer ratings. Lehigh qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2006, while the defense lowered its goals against average by almost one goal. From 2003 to 2006 Wray was an assistant coach at Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.) and then served as the lacrosse coach, academic coordinator and strength and conditioning specialist at the National Sport Academy for one year in 2007. He enjoyed a successful playing career at Duke, helping the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and winning ACC Tournament titles in 2001 and 2002. Serving as the team captain in 2003, he earned the Eric Tyler Hardy Defensive Player of the Year award and was a four-time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Upon graduating from Duke in 2003 with a bachelor's of science degree, he was drafted second overall by the Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League. He made an immediate impact, being named the 2004 Rookie of the Year, the Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Star while helping Calgary to the NLL Championship. A three-time NLL All-Star, he currently plays for the Philadelphia Wings, and served as team captain in 2011. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Wray has also excelled internationally. He is currently an assistant coach for the Canadian National Team, and is the defensive coordinator for the 2012 U-19 Team and the 2014 Men's National Team. He served in the same role for the 2010 National Team, which finished second at the 2010 World Championships. As a player, he was a member of the National Team which captured the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship for field lacrosse in 2006 and for indoor lacrosse in 2007. He was named to the All-World Team in 2007. Wray received a master's degree in teaching from Queens University in 2006. His wife, Lauren (nee Gallagher), was an All-American lacrosse player at Duke and is currently the head women’s lacrosse coach at Haverford College. They have two sons, Jackson and Ryan.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH Dan Keating Duke ‘99 Second Year

Dan Keating enters his second year with the Hawks after being promoted to associate head coach. Keating helped last season's squad increase its overall goal production by nearly two goals an outing, and the Extra Man Offense nearly doubled its conversion percentage, good for a 17-spot improvement in the national polls. Keating comes from Lehigh University where he worked as the extra man offensive coordinator and assistant offensive coordinator. In 2011, the Lehigh Extra Man Unit finished ninth in the country in terms of scoring percentage and second in the Patriot League in terms of goals scored. As the assistant offensive coordinator, Keating helped develop the Lehigh offense that finished the 2011 season averaging 10.44 goals per game. Prior to joining the Mountain Hawks’ staff, Keating served as the head coach at Malvern Prep. In 2010, Malvern won the regular season Inter-Ac Championship. Under Keating’s leadership, Malvern produced two high-school All-Americans, one Underarmour All-American, three All-State players, and five First

Team All Inter-Ac selections. In addition to coaching at Malvern Prep, Keating has also served as the head coach at St. Joseph's Prep and The Taft School. During his three years at St. Joseph's Prep, his teams compiled a record of 61-22, including a 4-3 record in the Pennsylvania state playoffs. While at St. Joseph's Prep, Dan coached 24 First Team All-Catholic League players; three of whom earned All-State honors. A 1999 graduate of Duke University, Keating was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams, including the Blue Devils' 1997 squad that reached the NCAA Final Four. A member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Keating earned his master's degree in secondary education from Saint Joseph's University. Dan Keating is the founder and owner of Keating Lacrosse Clinics, LLC, which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of the game to aspiring youth lacrosse players. He and his wife Kristin reside in Philadelphia.

ASSISTANT COACHES/THE HAWK Kevin Crowley

Stony Brook ‘11 Second Year Kevin Crowley, a successful collegiate and professional player, enters his second year with the Hawks as the volunteer assistant coach. Crowley was a standout at Stony Brook University, where he scored 131 goals and added 101 assists in 60 games, finishing his career among the best to play for the institution. He was one of three players in America East history to be a four-time All-League first team selection and in 2010, he earned the USILA Enners Award, given to the nation's Most Outstanding Division I player. A native of Westminster, B.C., Crowley was the number-one overall pick in the 2011 National Lacrosse League Draft by the Philadelphia Wings. He was the Wings' second leading scorer in 2012, with 71 points, while tying for the team-high in goals with 36. A 2011 graduate of Stony Brook, he earned a bachelor's degree in business management as well as a degree in psychology.

2013 Men’s Lacrosse

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 56 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Drexel ‘09 First Year Steve Grossi comes to Hawk Hill as an assistant coach for the 2012-13 season. He joins the Hawks after spending two years at Hampden-Sydney College, where he was involved in all aspects of the program. As the defensive coordinator, Grossi worked closely with the defensive units and goalies and coached All-Conference players each season. During his time at Hampden-Sydney, the Tigers appeared in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference playoffs every year. A 2009 graduate of Drexel University, Grossi earned a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration with concentrations in finance and marketing. A four-year starter for the Dragons, Grossi was a four-time All-CAA selection, earning second-team honors in 2005 and 2006 while being tabbed first team in 2007 and 2008. A two-time pre-season honorable mention All-American, Grossi was on the 2008 Tewaarton Trophy Watch List and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player as a senior. The two-time captain was a key figure in the Dragon's defense that finished seventh in the nation in both 2007 and 2008 when Drexel won a share of the CAA regular season championship. Grossi also helped guide the Dragons to highlight victories for the Drexel program, including an upset overtime victory over national powerhouse and #1 ranked University of Virginia in 2007. After his standout career at Drexel, Grossi was a member of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League in 200809. He was also a Developmental/Player Coach and a member of the Glenelg Lacrosse Club in Adelaide, South Australia, where he earned Most Valuable Player honors at the Australia National Championships in the summer of 2010. Additionally, Grossi was a graduate assistant coach at Drexel University for the 2008-09 season, assisting with the team defense and man-down units. Also a member of the Drexel University Junior Achievement Program from 2005-07, Grossi was responsible for creating and implementing a lacrosse program within the Philadelphia intercity school districts.

Finnesey Field, currently in its 83rd year, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over a thousand SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The most recent upgrade occurred in 2008 when the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, the field has seen other modifications since its inception in 1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadium for football was dashed when the sport was discontinued following the 1939 season. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finnesey home until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the original grandstand, as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue, were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey a true multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. The women’s lacrosse squad is 60-83 in 19 seasons on Hawk Hill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 en route to an 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23, 1993 when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-4.

FINNESEY FIELD

The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 55-73 mark in 19 seasons. The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958 and women’s soccer since 1996, while the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007. Overall, the site has seen 1,168 games entering the 2012-13 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 530588-50.

2012 REVIEW

The Hawk Will Never Die!

Entering the 2012 season with a completely new identity, the Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team showed much improvement under firstyear head coach Taylor Wray. The program turned in a 6-9 overall record as it picked up its first win against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent as a member of the conference. Under a “work hard” philosophy from the coaching staff, the players bought into the idea and had a turnaround season. The coaching staff did a tremendous job of preparing the team and laying the foundation for future success by making sure all of the little things were done the right way. Sophomore Ryan McGee emerged to be a leader after his off-season turned into a season-long performance that put his name in the SJU record book. His 38 goals which were second in the conference has him tied for second all time in school history. He went on to add 14 assists and tie for the team-lead in ground balls with 35. Also helping to the lead the offensive charge was the consistent play of junior Kyle Williams and senior Augustus Quinzani. Williams was second on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 14 assists while Quinzani’s season was highlighted by a game-winning goal against Quinnipiac late in the fourth quarter. A trio of senior captains, Trevor Dougherty, Bobby Hurley and Pat Sinnott controlled the midfield for SJU, helping clear to clear the ball and play a solid transition game. On the defensive end, a mixture of young talent paired with experienced veterans to improve their goals allowed by nearly 3.5 per game. Freshman Will Farrell led the team in caused turnovers with 16 in just eight games as fellow freshman Kevin Barrow caused eight in 12 starts. They had the opportunity to learn from seniors Matt Germain and Colin Roemer have helped anchor the defense over the past few years.

Augustus Quinzani Between the pipes for Crimson and Gray was senior Griffin Ferrigan. As the defense stepped up in front of him, he did himself. His 9.31 goals against average sits him sixth for a Hawk in a single season and his 11.67 saves per game put him number one in the CAA. SJU opened the year with two losses to Lehigh and Bryant before it grabbed its first win. Three goals by Williams and McGee led a 12-4 victory over VMI that snapped a 14-game losing streak the Hawks were riding from the 2011 season. They carried the momentum into the Wagner game one week later as Hurley and freshman Michael Dougherty stepped up to add two goals apiece in the 6-5 win over the Seahawks. From there, Saint Joseph’s kicked off a four-game home swing that featured three losses and an exciting comeback victory over Quinnipiac that was capped off with a fourth quarter goal from Quinzani. The goal picked up the team’s third win of the year as the scoreboard read 8-7 at the end of regulation. The Hawks went on to lose their next four games against some of the toughest conference opponents. Following the four-game skid, the squad ended the season on a bright note as it closed out the year with three straight wins against Mercer, Marist and Towson. McGee combined to score a total of 15 goals over the last three games. With a talented core of young players returning to Hawk Hill next season, coach Wray is confident the team will be ready to compete for a spot in the four-team CAA tournament next season.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. 2013 Men’s Lacrosse

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia – only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well.
