2013 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 1
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK Coming off of a 2012 season in which the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team won more games than in its previous three seasons combined, the 2013 Hawks will kick off their season on August 30. With the return of 10 starters from the 2012 squad, the experience of 16 seniors and juniors, and the spark of 11 newcomers, fourthyear head coach Don D’Ambra expects to continue SJU’s momentum and success into 2013. “We have very high expectations for this season,” said D’Ambra. “We have a large senior class that has been with me for my four years. They know what is expected and understand our philosophy both defensively and offensively. Our staff is excited for our seniors because we want them to experience the benefits of all their hard work. In addition, we have a very good, athletic freshman recruiting class that will add depth to our roster. We expect them to compete for time and to contribute.” CAPTAINS At the helm of the squad are two second-year captains in redshirt senior goalkeeper Andrew D’Ottavi and senior midfielder Pat McGlynn in addition to senior defender Brendan Reilly. While McGlynn will lead the offensive charge of a combined 15 forwards and midfielders, D’Ottavi and Reilly will control the defensive Senior midfielder Pat McGlynn unit of 12 defenders and four goalkeepers. “I am really happy with the leadership qualities that our captains are displaying this year both on the field and off,” said D’Ambra of his leading trio. “All have been the leaders in their fitness testing and have played very well in preseason camp. They are also communicating very well and enhancing the team chemistry by providing positive energy.”
Junior forward Alex Critzos
FORWARDS Saint Joseph’s returns seven Hawks that combined for 95 percent (18-of-19) of the squad’s goals in 2012 – the most amount of goals scored by the program since 2003. The Hawks’ front line will be highlighted by a talented duo of juniors in Alex Critzos (5G, 2A) and Mike Glazer (1A). Starting
all 18 games last season, Critzos returns having been the Hawks’ consistent day-to-day forward in 2012 while Glazer wasted no time netting SJU’s first goal of the season in exhibition action against LIU Brooklyn on August 19. Senior Ryan McFadden and sophomore Emmanuel Temeh (2G) both have good sense around the goal and bring additional veteran experience off the bench for the Crimson and Gray while newcomers Mori Diane and Cameron Kadkhodai will compete for minutes on the offensive end of the field. MIDFIELDERS A 2012 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie selection, Tim Lazorko (5G, 5A) enters his sophomore campaign after leading the Hawks in points (15) last season. Lazorko tallied at least one point in all of SJU’s 2012 wins, and his high level of intensity and ability to make crucial plays in the attacking third earned him the title of SJU’s 2012 Offensive Player of the Year. “Tim is coming off a productive freshman year, and he understands his position better, especially defensively,” said D’Ambra. “I think he has the potential to be an All-Conference player if he continues to work hard and main- Sophomore midfielder Tim Lazorko tain high energy within the matches.” Starting all 18 games last season and 52 total in his three-year career, senior captain and fourth-year starter Pat McGlynn’s (2G, 1A) solid knowledge of the game and consistent play make him a strong force on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Junior Jake Nelson (2G, 3A) and senior Jimmy Reilly (1A, 1A) will round out the starting midfield for the Crimson and Gray. Nelson showed great drive late into games last season as he tallied the game-winning assist against Bucknell and the game-winning PK overtime goal against Loyola. The first player off the bench for the Hawks in 2012, Reilly saw action in all 18 games with eight starts. His competitive edge was evident throughout the season, highlighted by his overtime game-winning goal on opening day against Hartwick. Rookie Sam Irvin has impressed during the preseason camp as a central midfielder. Top Drawer Soccer’s 2013 #2 ranked player from the south, Irvin will be expected to make significant contributions in the midfield in his freshman campaign. “Sam has been very steady on the ball and is playing with confidence,” said D’Ambra. “He is still adjusting to the increased speed of play and the physicality that the Division I level provides.” Saint Joseph’s also returns sophomores Mike Serban and Adam Wissner to the mix and welcomes newcomers Eric Jordan, the 2012 South Jersey Midfielder of the Year, and Mike Stuski.
2013 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 2
2013 SEASON OUTLOOK DEFENDERS Senior captain Brendan Reilly, Saint Joseph’s 2012 Defensive Player of the Year, returns to anchor the veteran back line in 2013. A leading factor on the defensive end, Reilly demonstrates the ability to shut down opposing offensive units and begin plays for the Hawks’ offense.
Also in the mix for the defense is Jake Mulinge, who made 10 starts last season and adds solid athleticism and speed. A trio of senior veterans in fourth-year players Colin Reilly, Brian Reynolds, and Connor Widerman will round out the returning defense. Saint Joseph’s will see four newcomers compete for minutes on the back line, including 2011 All-Massachusetts State selection Coupar Lipp, Edward Foley, Zach Lyons, and Chris McCrea. GOALKEEPERS The Atlantic 10‘s returning leader in saves (57), redshirt senior captain Andrew D’Ottavi (1.78 GAA, .756 SV%) enters his fourth season between the pipes for the Crimson and Gray. D’Ottavi started 17 games last season en route to posting three shutouts, including a double-overtime scoreless draw in A-10 action at La Salle. A twotime Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week and University of Kentucky All-Tournament Team selection, D’Ottavi enters his final season ranked fifth all-time in total career saves on Hawk Hill with 293 and will be a vital part to the team’s success, as his dedicated mentality and commitment will lead the Hawks defense. “Andrew has been solid in goal, and we expect a good year from him,” said D’Ambra.
Senior defender Brendan Reilly
Junior Tommy Brooks, who did an exceptional job after transitioning from a defensive midfielder to a sole defensive role last season, will start alongside Reilly. D’Ambra believes that the amount of time his two veterans have spent learning the back line together will lead to great success for 2013 defense. “Brendan and Tommy have been working very well together leading our back line,” said D’Ambra. “They have established good chemistry with one another and have learned to play the position better over the past couple years.” After earning his way into the starting rotation in the early portion of last season through his relentless work ethic, junior Brandon Stevis will join Reilly and Brooks to complete the returning defensive trio. Together, Reilly, Brooks, and Stevis put together their most impressive defensive pair of matches on the weekend of October 26-28 of last season. The SJU back line shut down La Salle's and Fordham's offense, allowing just one goal on 58 combined shots. All three Hawk defenders played every minute of both double overtime games, totaling 220:00 each, en route to two late season draws. The sole newcomer expected in the starting 11 this Friday, freshman Bliss Harris has earned a starting role as an outside defender during preseason camp and will round out the Crimson and Gray back line. “We have been impressed with the performance of Bliss,” said D’Ambra. “He has been working very hard and has excellent athleti cism. He has been eager to learn and is trying to apply new things to his game.”
Senior goalkeeper Andrew D’Ottavi
Fellow senior Michael Moulton (.081 GAA, .667 SV%) returns as a strong force in goal while classmate Sam Pozzessere and freshman Jay Higbee (2012 All-New Jersey State selection) will also compete for minutes between the pipes. With a core group of senior experience and a freshman class that are both capable and ready to make an impact, the 2013 season promises to be one to remember. And for D’Ambra and the 2013 Hawks, that goal is within reach. “We have set many goals for our team this year,” said D’Ambra of his 2013 squad. “However, our ultimate goal is to qualify for the Atlantic 10 playoffs and to have a strong run in that tournament.”

HEAD COACH Don D’Ambra Head Coach - Fourth Year Saint Joseph’s University ‘94
Don D'Ambra is now in his fourth season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's men's soccer program in 2013. One of the most decorated former SJU student-athletes to be named a head coach on Hawk Hill, D'Ambra was introduced as the fourth head coach in the program's history on April 15, 2010. The 2012 season marked tremendous growth of the SJU men's soccer program as the Hawks posted a 5-11-2 overall record while going 1-6-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks recorded the same amount of wins as in their previous three seasons combined en route to putting together a pair of ties late in the season to prevent losses against La Salle and Fordham for the first time since 2008 and 2006, respectively. In his first season at SJU, D'Ambra led the Hawks to an overall record of 2-15-0 and 1-8-0 in the A-10 as the squad snapped a 24-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Iona and won its first conference match since 2008 in a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island. In 2011, D'Ambra compiled identical overall and conference records as in his inaugural season, putting together a two-year record of 4-30-0 overall and 2-16-0 in conference play. D'Ambra's current three-year record on Hawk Hill stands as 9-41-2. D'Ambra returned to Saint Joseph's after a successful coaching and playing career with the Philadelphia KiXX of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). He played a total of 16 seasons in the MISL, the last 14 seasons with the KiXX, and served as team captain, assistant coach, and head coach. In 2002, he assumed duties as the head coach of the KiXX and served as the vice president of soccer operations/head coach until 2009-10. D'Ambra helped the KiXX to two MISL championships, as a player in 2002 and player/coach in 2007. A four-time All-Star selection, D'Ambra is the KiXX's all-time leading scorer, amassing 388 goals and 905 points. In eight seasons as head coach, he totaled 119 wins, the most in the team's history. While at Saint Joseph's from 1990-94, D'Ambra was a Regional All-America First Team selection and remains the only player in Hawk history to earn the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year award, winning it in 1993. D'Ambra holds the SJU career records for goals (41) and points (102), as well as the marks for goals (15) and points (38) in a season, set in 1993. He was inducted into SJU's Men's Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000. "We are pleased and honored to welcome back Don D'Ambra as our new head men's soccer coach. Don is committed to the SJU mission to enhance the overall student-athlete experience," said director of athletics Don DiJulia. "Don's passion and commitment to excel will encourage the success of our student-athletes and the soccer program from its solid foundation built by his predecessors Tom Turner, Jack Ruggero and Jack Dunn. He brings energy and a vision for the future of the Hawk soccer program. Don made us proud during his playing days here and will make us even more proud during his tenure as our head coach." D'Ambra owns a USSF "A" coaching license and has been involved with coaching youth teams, conducting coaching clinics and organizing skills and development programs for over 14 years. He possesses international playing experience, having been a member of the United States National Futsal Team from 2002 through 2008. With 15 international caps, D'Ambra has participated in the World Championships and the Pan American Games. D'Ambra replaced Tom Turner, who retired after 23 seasons as the Hawks' head coach and had been an assistant coach on Turner's staff at SJU from 1996-99. A native of Philadelphia, D'Ambra attended North Catholic High School and graduated from Saint Joseph's in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and concentration in food marketing. THE HAWK
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has
been flapping its wings for over half a century. The Hawk, which celebrated its gold-
en anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."
Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”
since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the
student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is sug-
gestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.
The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history.
It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports
Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

SWEENEY FIELD Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years and has been home to over 700 SJU varsity games, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. The field has undergone many upgrades over the years, but the most recent was completed in the summer of 2008. The AstroTurf that was laid down in 2001 was replaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to better suit the athletes who use it for all seasons. Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Sweeney home until 1959. In 1960, the original grandstand as well as the hillside seating near Overbrook Avenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, the field’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location. The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in 1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. The squad has compiled an overall mark of 165-192-31 in 53 seasons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program on Sweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victory over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958. In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeney a truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights furthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to a historic stadium. The field hockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now practices and hosts games on the new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. The location has also been home to women’s soccer since 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last season on Sweeney in 2007. Overall, the site has seen 1,193 games entering the 2013-14 academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 547-595-51.

2013 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE 31
2012 YEAR IN REVIEW Coming off of a three-season stretch in which the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team won only four games combined, the Hawks saw an undeniable amount of progress through increased development and sparked talent under the direction of head coach Don D’Ambra in the 2012 season. Led by a trio of captains in seniors Tim Brennan and Andrew D'Ottavi and junior Pat McGlynn, Saint Joseph's concluded this season with a 5-11-2 overall record while going 1-6-2 in conference action. The Hawks kicked off the 2012 season in promising fashion as they soared past Hartwick in a 2-1 overtime thriller to earn their first opening-day win on Finnesey Field since 2002. Junior midfielder Jimmy Reilly made the first goal of his collegiate career a big one as he netted the game-winner in the 95th minute while sophomore defender Tommy Brooks scored his first collegiate goal in the match as well off of a header in the fourth minute. With the win, the Hawks broke a 12-home-game losing streak that dated back to October 22, 2010. "Opening day was a statement on where we're going as a program," said head coach Don D'Ambra. "We wanted this year to be a big step in the right direction. The game had good energy and execution, and it was good to see Tommy and Jimmy step up and take initiative. A game like that set the tone for the season, and it was really good to see them set that tone for us, especially now as we move forward for next year." After falling to NJIT, 2-0, and St. Francis, 5-1, with SJU's lone goal coming from McGlynn, the Hawks traveled to Lexington, Ky. to compete in the UK Invitational from September 7-9. The squad dropped two 2-0 matches to host Kentucky and Stony Brook, but the seniors were acknowledged for their individual performances as D'Ottavi and Brennan were both named to the 2012 University of Kentucky All-Tournament team. D'Ottavi doubled his saves per game average in the second and third weeks of the season, averaging 5.3 saves per game against St. Francis, Kentucky, and Stony Brook combined in comparison to 2.5 saves per game in his first two outings of the season. "All three captains did a great job this year of showing good leadership on the field," said D'Ambra of Brennan, D'Ottavi, and McGlynn. "Timmy set a good example for the younger guys, and that's the epitome of a good captain. Andrew was a vocal leader; he was always upbeat and he earned recognition because of his good play. Pat's been a hard worker all year, and it was a great experience for him to be in that role; I thinkhe will step up and contribute more in the captain role next year.” Standing at 1-4 after the first half of the non-conference season, the Hawks returned to Finnesey Field to face Rider on Alumni/Family Day. In a span of 49 minutes, sophomore forward Alex Critzos became the team's leading scorer as he netted two goals, the second as the game-winner. In between Critzos's goals, Brennan added to SJU's offensive dominance by recording his first collegiate goal as Saint Joseph's defeated Rider, 3-0.

Tim Lazorko
D'Ottavi earned his first shutout of the season off of the four-save effort en route to being named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week for the week ending September 16. Back on the road, the Hawks dropped a 3-2 match to #24 Cornell despite a nine-save effort by D'Ottavi before the next two games saw the breakthrough of freshman midfielder Tim Lazorko. The freshman and senior would pair up to earn a win for the squad as Lazorko netted his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute and D'Ottavi recorded his second shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Bucknell. Just four days later, Lazorko would go on to score the first goal of a 2-1 overtime win over Loyola (Md.), with sophomore midfielder Jake Nelson coming through with a successful penalty kick to give the Hawks their second consecutive win. For their efforts in the pair of wins, Lazorko was named both the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week while Nelson earned Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week honors for the week ending September 30. With the victory, the Hawks doubled their amount of wins from the 2011 season and totaled their combined number of wins from the previous three seasons. The second of the back-to-back wins also gave the Hawks a two-game winning streak for the first time since 2008. "Alex and Jake both got a lot of minutes last year as freshmen, but this season they really stepped up and were consistent for us all year," said D'Ambra of his sophomore duo. "They've both matured but have the potential to be much better . . . We ask a lot of them for sophomores, but at the same time, they're both talented players and they can continue to grow. Alex was our steady forward day-in and day-out and Jake is very good on the ball. We feel that when they mature more, they can be better." Winning three of four in the second half of the non-conference season marked a turning point for the young Hawks team as the improvement became more evident with each play. The squad became more offensively aggressive toward the halfway-point of the regular season. In the first five games of non-conference play, the Hawks went 1-4 and fired off 54 total shots, an average of 10.8 shots per game. In the final four games in which the squad posted a 3-1 record, SJU rocketed 70 total shots, an average of 17.5 shots per game, a near seven-shot increase from the opening half of non-conference play. Additionally, the Hawks increased their shot on goal numbers, improving from 4.4 shots on goal per game to six while decreasing opponents' numbers from 6.6 to 5.75. Kicking off Atlantic 10 action at home, SJU dropped two tight games at Finnesey, including a 2-1 overtime-heartbreaker to Duquesne in the conference opener and a match against St. Bonaventure that held a 2-2 draw until the 84th minute. Critzos and Lazorko contributed for the Hawks as Critzos netted two of the weekend's three goals and Lazorko assisted on both goals while tallying one of his own.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW
After dropping a 2-0 road match to Massachusetts, the Hawks earned their first win of the conference at Rhode Island largely in part to an off-thebench all-star performance from freshman forward Emmanuel Temeh. Temeh's first collegiate goal, an equalizer, came just under two minutes after subbing into the game while his second goal, the overtime game-winner, came just under two minutes into overtime. For his two-goal performance in the 3-2 overtime victory, Temeh was named both the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week for ending October 14. "Emmanuel has a lot of raw talents and good athletic ability, speed, and explosiveness," said D'Ambra. "This year was a great learning experience for him. He is an extremely hard worker and is determined; if he can make the adjustments to this level in the next year or two, he could really contribute." A pair of losses to #23 Saint Louis and Butler brought the Hawks to 1-5 in the A-10, but the record does not justify nor demonstrate the undeniable strides in improvement made by the 2012 squad. With the exception of a 20 loss to Massachusetts, the Hawks proved to be fierce competitors in all other conference losses as they held ties with Duquesne until the 95th minute of overtime, St. Bonaventure until the 84th minute, #23 Saint Louis until the 71st minute, and Butler until the 89th minute. A result of a talented core of young players, SJU netted seven shots in the first two-thirds of the conference season, doubling last season's amount of goals scored at the same point. Junior goalkeeper Michael Moulton posted a solid defensive showing in his first start of the season, allowing just one goal against nationally-ranked Saint Louis, while Lazorko received Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week honors once more for the week ending October 21 for tallying his fifth goal of the season in the Saint Louis/Butler home weekend finale. "Hopefully they can learn from being in the situation of losing all of those close games," said D'Ambra. "Hopefully they can handle them a little bit better next year and have a little more confidence and savvy in those lategame situations." The offensive spark of the younger experience gave way to the defensive strength of the veterans as perhaps the season's most impressive defensive pair of games came on the weekend of October 26-28. The Hawks' defensive back line of D'Ottavi, Brooks, junior Brendan Reilly, and sophomore Brandon Stevis shut down La Salle's and Fordham's offense, allowing just one goal on 58 combined shots. All four Hawk defenders played every minute of both double overtime games, totaling 220:00 each. D'Ottavi made a combined 22 saves on the weekend, including a season-high 12 saves against La Salle, to earn his second Philadelphia Soccer Six Defender of the Week accolades. A 2-0 loss at Temple would end the season of a much improved and accomplished Hawks squad. Although Saint Joseph's didn't reach the A-10 postseason, a duo of senior and freshman Hawks garnered A-10 postseason accolades, as well as additional team honors. Brennan took home All-Academic honors for the second straight year, becoming the first SJU player to earn back-to-back AllAcademic honors in nearly a decade, and was the recipient of SJU's Most
Valuable Player award and Jack Dunn award, an honor given to the player that best exemplifies the leadership qualities and ambition of Saint Joseph's men's soccer pioneer, Jack Dunn. The rookie half of the dynamic duo, Lazorko, was selected to the A-10 All-Rookie team and earned team honors in the categories of Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. For his defensive dominance, B. Reilly was named the squad's Defensive Player of the Year. On the season as a whole, D'Ambra states, "Overall, we jumped on our offensive productivity this year, improving nearly 50% on goals scored, shots taken, and corner kicks, which means that we created more on the attack. This allowed us to be competitive. I feel the confidence this year grew as we started to win some of those tight games, like Loyola (Md.) and Bucknell. We had close A-10 games, and we could see the players growing. As the season went on, they really started to believe in themselves as a team . . . The players believe that they can win games now, and for as young as we are, that's a huge step in the right direction . . . We're not where we want to be, because we should have won more than five games, so from a record standpoint, we're not happy. But, with the way we played and competed, we're very happy with the season as a whole."

Legendary Jack Dunn, the first-ever coach of the Saint Joseph’s soccer team, has done more for the Hawk program than any one individual. The team’s head coach from 1958 through 1975, Dunn compiled a career record of 120-57-23 (.658) in his 18 years at the helm, leading SJU to the NCAA Tournament in 1966, 1971 and 1972. The 76-year-old Dunn played on the 1952 U.S. Olympic team and went on to a long playing career in the old German-American Professional League. Dunn, who also served as an assistant coach with the Hawks in the mid-90s, was one of 20 inaugural inductees to the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,650 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue. A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.
SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university. SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, pro-
fessional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
