SEASON OUTLOOK The Saint Joseph’s field hockey team will have a bit of a new look this fall as a dozen new additions to the roster have head coach Michelle Finegan and her squad primed for a charge to the top of the Atlantic 10. “Our goal right now is to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship,” said Finegan, now in her 17th season at the helm of the Saint Joseph’s program. “From there, if we get into the tournament, our goal is to win the championship.” In order to achieve those goals, Finegan’s charges will have to navigate something of a new-look Atlantic 10, as longtime local rival Temple departed the league and was replaced by new associate member Saint Francis (Pa.). The Red Flash is the third new program to join the conference for field hockey in the past four seasons, joining Lock Haven (2010) and VCU (2012). Davidson is set to bring the total field hockey membership to nine schools in 2014. “I think, overall, having a larger number of teams is good for the conference,” said Finegan. “It means that if you make the Atlantic 10 Championship, you’ve beaten some pretty tough teams, and it can allow the Atlantic 10 to qualify for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.” Competition will be fierce for the four postseason berths, but Finegan believes the Hawks will be right in the mix once conference play begins. Perennial league powers Massachusetts and Richmond are expected to be near the top of the conference once again, but with Temple’s departure, the competition for the remaining A-10 Championship bids will be wide open. “There are probably four teams, including us, vying for those spots,” Finegan said. “The competition is going to be pretty wide open.” Despite the new addition to the league and the new additions to the roster, the SJU program has stability on its coaching staff, as former All-American Jessica Javelet and former NCAA national champion Chelsea Cipriani return for their third and second seasons, respectively, on the sidelines at Ellen Ryan Field. The staff will have a unique challenge this season, molding together a group of 10 freshmen and two transfers and integrating them with the squad “We have a fresh atmosphere and a good attitude around the team,” Finegan said. “People are working together and are very supportive of each other. I give the upperclassmen a lot of credit; they’ve been very encouraging and supportive of the incoming class.”

Two of those upperclassmen, Sara Kolobielski and Shannon McNeill, will serve as the team’s captains this season. The lone seniors on the squad, Kolobielski and McNeill will also be called on to lead the Hawks’ defensive efforts. Sophomore Eva Gekas returns this season as well; the trio combined to start every game for the Hawks in 2012. Joining them in the defensive backfield will be sophomore back/midfielder Mia Tomkins and incoming freshmen Katja Hansen and Micky Saperstein. Two newcomers will serve as the last line of defense this season as junior transfer Rachel Barnett and freshman Amelia Deibler will hold down the fort in the cage for the Hawks. Barnett, who comes from Dublin City University in her native Dublin, Ireland, and Deibler, who also has experience as an ice hockey goalie, are both expected to see significant time in goal for Saint Joseph’s. The Hawks will have a strong young core up the middle, led by Nicole Gerdes, the squad’s second leading scorer in 2012. Gerdes tallied five goals, good for second on the team, and a team-best five assists last season, and will be called upon to contribute on the scoreboard once again. Joining Gerdes in the midfield will be junior Corie McLaughlin, who missed last season but started five games as a freshman in 2011.

That lineup will face a good balance of competition this season, as the Hawks kick off the campaign with a trip to Virginia to face Liberty and Longwood on opening weekend. A road tilt at crosstown rival and CAA preseason favorite Drexel precedes a four-match homestand and a stretch where SJU plays seven of eight games at Ellen Ryan Field. The Hawks will host Fairfield, Penn, Towson and Pacific before heading to Quinnipiac. Then it’s back home for Villanova, Rider, and Siena before Atlantic 10 play begins. HEAD COACH Michelle Finegan Delaware ‘84 17th Season

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk program to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most successful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons with double-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history. In 2011, Finegan presided over the Hawks’ return to campus as the brand-new, state-of-the-art Ellen Ryan Field opened on September 24. The Hawks notched their first win on the new pitch a few weeks later, toppling rival Villanova, 3-2 in FINEGAN’S RÉSUMÉ overtime, on October 12. It was the natural culmination of Finegan’s rebuilding efforts as the Hawks had qualified for the A-10 Tournament in three of her final four seasons before she took over the head coaching position at Lehigh. An excellent player at both the collegiate and national levels, Finegan was a standout defensive player at the University of Delaware (1978-81), helping the Blue Hens place third in the nation as a junior. She was a member of the United States National Team from 1981-86 and was an alternate on the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team that won the bronze medal in Los Angeles. She came out of retirement as a player in 1993 to start for the U.S. National Team that placed fifth at the Intercontinental Cup and qualified the U.S. for the 1994 World Cup. Actively involved with the United States Field Hockey Association for more than two decades, Finegan has played a role in developing players throughout the nation since the inception of the USFHA Futures Program. ASSISTANT COACHES Jessica Javelet Louisville ‘07 Third Season

Former University of Louisville standout Jessica Javelet returns to head coach Michelle Finegan’s coaching staff for a third season in 2013. Prior to the 2012 season, Javelet became the first full-time assistant coach in program history. Javelet came to Saint Joseph’s from her alma mater, Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons. The Rancho Santa Fe, California native has also spent time with the United States Field Hockey Futures Program, where she has worked with the national U-14, U-16, and U-19 programs since 2004. A decorated player at Louisville, Javelet was a First Team All-American as a senior and earned Big East Offensive Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team honors as well. As a junior, she led Division I in goals, finding the cage 30 times, and was a finalist for the Honda Award, given to the top female college athlete in 12 different sports. Javelet was also a finalist for the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. During her collegiate career, she also spent time as a member of the USA Field Hockey U-21 Junior National Team. Off the field, Javelet was the University of Louisville’s Most Outstanding Graduating Senior and was the valedictorian for the Class of 2007. Among her academic accolades, she was twice named an Academic First Team All-American; in 2007 she was awarded an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was named the Big East’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. After college, Javelet played for the National Field Hockey Development Team from 2006 to 2009 and spent the 2009 season with Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany. She also took part in the Women’s High Performance National Championship for three seasons as part of the MidWest squad. Javelet graduated from Louisville in 2007 with a degree in marketing.

ASSISTANT COACHES Chelsea Cipriani Wake Forest ‘08 Second Season

Former Wake Forest captain and NCAA Division I national champion Chelsea Cipriani returns for her second season on the Hawk coaching staff in 2013. Before coming to Saint Joseph’s, she spent the previous year at Delaware after three seasons at Longwood. Cipriani helped lead the Blue Hens to nine wins and an appearance in the CAA Tournament in 2011. While she was at Longwood, the Lancers won 28 games and earned a pair of third-place finishes in the NorPac Conference. During her collegiate career, Cipriani was an All-South Region honoree and helped lead Wake Forest to four consecutive Final Four appearances, including a national championship in 2004. Cipriani was also a key part of the Demon Deacons’ runs to an undefeated regular season in 2005 and the ACC tournament championship and national runner-up status in 2006. Cipriani notched 29 goals in her four seasons, including a career-high 13 in 2006 and led the Demon Deacons with 12 as a senior in 2007, when she was named to the All-South Region First Team and was tabbed as the South Jersey Collegiate Field Hockey Player of the Year. Cipriani was also named the Gloucester County Times Player of the Year as a senior at West Deptford High School in 2003 and was recently inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. A member of the USA Olympic Development Program from 2001 to 2003, Cipriani has worked extensively with USA Field Hockey as a coach, Futures Site Director, and Futures Regional Selector. She also holds a Level 2 coaching certification from USA Field Hockey. Competing for the South Region Team, Cipriani took part in the 2010 Women’s High Performance National Championship, where her squad finished third. A native of West Deptford, N.J., Cipriani earned a degree in communications from Wake Forest in 2008.

ELLEN RYAN FIELD After spending three-plus seasons playing home games off-campus, the Hawks returned to City Avenue in 2011 when they opened up the brand new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Named for the recently-retired former assistant athletic director and senior women’s adminstrator, Ryan Field is equipped with a top-of-the-line synthetic AstroTurf12 surface, state-of-the-art water cannons, an irrigation drainage system, a mobile press box, and bleacher seating for 200 fans. Ryan, who retired from Saint Joseph’s in August of 2011, served in the athletic department for 37 years and was the driving force behind the growth of the women’s athletics programs at Saint Joseph’s. She served as SJU’s first women’s basketball coach and also coached the women’s tennis team for a time. Her vision and dedication are the foundation upon which Ryan Field, and the women’s athletics program at Saint Joseph’s, are built. “When you think of women’s athletics at SJU, the first name you think of is, and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope that by putting her name on this field, the University can honor her contributions now and forever.” Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008 through 2010 seasons playing predominantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJU amassed a 12-12 “home” record at the facility during that stretch.

THE HAWK

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 56 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2012 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2012 season marked the first full year on campus for the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program in five years. The Hawks posted three wins at Ellen Ryan Field as larger crowds and the advantages of having a field of their own began to make the facility feel like home. SJU opened the season with a 2-1 win over Liberty. Freshman Rachael Brosious scored her first career goal and sophomore Jordan Martin added a penalty stroke to give the Hawks the victory. Brosious was rewarded with the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award. A week later, the Hawks dropped an overtime heartbreaker to #24 Drexel by the same 2-1 score. Junior goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made nine saves to keep the Hawks in the game throughout the duration. The loss began a tough stretch for Saint Joseph’s, but Martin scored a pair of goals to help the Hawks end the skid with a 3-1 home victory over Siena on September 16. The Crimson and Gray closed out the month with a trip to seventh-ranked Virginia, hanging tough with the Cavaliers before ultimately falling by a 6-3 score. Sophomore Nicole Gerdes notched a pair of goals in the match for SJU. The game at Virginia helped spur the Hawks on to two straight victories, including a home win over archrival Villanova. Senior Meghan Githens turned in the first multi-goal game of her career to provide the offense as Saint Joseph’s won consecutive matchups with the Wildcats for the first time since 1994-96. Senior Abby Hoover scored her firsr career goal and Mitchell posted the first shutout of her career as the Hawks opened conference play with a 1-0 win on the road at Saint Louis. From there, the Hawks suffered three consecutive one-goal defeats that scuttled their hopes of qualifying for the Atlantic 10 Championship. A 2-1 overtime defeat to Lock Haven preceded 1-0 regulation losses to La Salle and at #17 Richmond. In both games, the winning goal was scored on a penalty corner in the final minute of the match. After the season, Martin, Brosious, and Githens earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades. Martin was named to the All-Conference Second Team, while Brosious nabbed All-Rookie honors. Githens was picked for the All-Academic Team for the second year in a row. Ten Hawks were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association’s National Academic Squad. Githens and Hoover were honored for the fourth consecutive season, with Githens being named a “Scholar of Distinction” for posting a cumulative grade point average above 3.90.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 13-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The league will add one more to its ranks in 2014 when Davidson College becomes the 14th institution to join the A-10. In 2012-13, the Atlantic 10 continued to be proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 13 member institutions of the A10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of seven states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites

every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 3,255 student-athletes in 2012-13. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified studentathletes. In 2012-13, nearly 200 studentathletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Saint Louis’ Alejandro (Alex) Aleman, Shane Basen of Charlotte, Nicole Cherok of Duquesne and Sadie Wonders from Dayton were named Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. The Postgraduate Scholarship program has been so successful that the Atlantic 10’s Directors of Athletics recently voted to more than double the number of recipients to 10 individuals and increase the value each recipient receives to $7,000. The program will expand beginning with the 2014 honorees. The Atlantic 10 Conference once again earned high marks in the latest Academic Progress Rates (APR). This includes ranking fifth among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 984 average, 10 points above the Rebecca Cunfer, the 2004 Atlantic 10 Field national average. The Atlantic 10 had 49 Hockey Rookie of the Year, was named Studentteams rated with perfect scores, up from 40 Athlete of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. last year, and there were 106 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, there were ATLANTIC 10 STAFF DIRECTORY 184 conference teams with APR scores at or Commissioner above the national average, representing Bernadette V. McGlade 76 percent of all A-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Associate Commissioner Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average at or Debbie Richardson above the national average. There were 54 A-10 programs that earned national APR Associate Commissioner public recognition for scores ranked in the Ed Pasque top 10 percent of their respective sports in APR scores and the league ranked fourth Associate Commissioner among all Division I conferences in number Wendy Larry of teams publically recognized by the NCAA. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

WHY S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY?

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as have most campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy both internally and externally. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among the nation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”). THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
