SEASON OUTLOOK For the first time in over a decade, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program welcomes a new head coach, as Lynn Farquhar prepares for her first season at the helm. A former national champion as a studentathlete at Old Dominion, Farquhar has also been to the Final Four as an assistant coach, and she is ready to help the Hawks take the next step in her first head coaching position. “I’m thrilled to be here,” she said. “I think it’s an exciting program to be a part of, from the way the University operates to the energy and work rate that the student-athletes have demonstrated so far, it’s been exciting.” Farquhar has put together an accomplished staff of assistant coaches, including three-time All-American Katie Brady, two-time national save percentage leader Anna Zarkoski, and Nick Roydhouse, who played soccer at the international level for his native New Zealand. Upon arriving on Hawk Hill, the new staff was greeted with a veteran group, laden with plenty of experience and one goal in mind: to return to the Atlantic 10 Championship. “The goal that the team set was to make the Atlantic 10 Tournament, and they are adamant about that,” Farquhar said. “It’s my job to help them do it.” Spearheading that effort is a talented group of seniors, led by captains Nicole Gerdes, Jordan Martin, and Katie Walsh. Redshirt senior Sara Kolobielski and seniors Corie McLaughlin and Tori Popinko have also played a big part in aiding the transition, both on and off the field. “Our seniors, as a group, are incredibly important,” said Farquhar. “They are respected by their teammates and can set the tempo [for the entire team]. They’ve helped set the goals for where we’re going to go, and they’re going to help us get there.” Martin led the Hawks in scoring each of the past two seasons en route to a pair of All-Atlantic 10 Second Team honors. After posting career highs in goals, assists, and points last season, Martin will certainly find herself as one of the focal points of the Hawk attack. Despite missing time due to injury, Gerdes ranked third on the squad in goals and tied for third in points last season. Always a solid contributor in the midfield and in attack, she will be another key cog in what Farquhar hopes will be an up-tempo offense. Popinko notched a career high in goals last season and will look to contribute on the offensive end, while

Senior forward jordan martin led the hawks in scoring each of the past two seasons en route to AllConference Second Team honors both years. She reached career highs in goals, assists, and total points last season.

McLaughlin and Walsh will be part of SJU’s midfield rotation. Meanwhile, Kolobielski is the squad’s most experienced player, having started every game for the Hawks over the past three seasons, and will be counted on to help anchor the defensive line. Another defensive stalwart over the past two seasons has been junior Eva Gekas, who returns to the Hawk back line after playing in every game over her first two seasons. Classmate Sarah Yerk enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign, ranking second on the team in goals and points, and should see significant time in an attacking role. Fellow juniors Claire McDugall and Mia Tomkins will also add depth to the forward and midfield corps, respectively. Midfielder Melanie Colozzi, an Atlantic 10 AllRookie honoree in 2013, goalkeeper Amelia Deibler, and defender Katja Hansen, all sophomores, will likely see plenty of playing time in 2014. Colozzi started all 19 games last season and will look to continue her growth in her second season, while Deibler earned her first career win in the Hawks’ win over Villanova last October. Hansen also started all 19 games last season and will provide valuable experience in the defensive backfield.

SEASON OUTLOOK Sophomores Nadia de Vries, Kristen Moisey, Emily Nonnemacher, and Kerri Turk were reliable contributors throughout the 2013 season as well, while classmates Julia Mustin and Micky Saperstein will join them this season in helping lift the Hawks into the upper echelon of the Atlantic 10. Saint Joseph’s boasts a well-rounded group of newcomers as well this season, as freshman forwards Jackalyn Pauling and Madison Shields and midfielders Melissa Herd, Bridget Kilgallen, Jackie Schwartz, and Kolbie White will all look to hit the ground running in the early going and compete for playing time. The new-look Hawks will make their season debut at Lehigh on August 29 before contesting their home opener against Towson two days later at Ellen Ryan Field. SJU opens September at the American University Classic, taking on two programs that are ranked in the NFHCA preseason poll in American and Michigan State. The 2014 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship will be held at Richmond’s Crenshaw Field on November 7 and 8. The Hawks have set their sights on playing in that tournament for the first time in five years, and they know what it will take to get there. “The team’s energy and work rate have been all I can ask for,” Farquhar said. “The first day of preseason camp was hard, but they took it as a challenge and they pumped each other up. I think if we do that for an entire season, we’ll be really strong, and it will be a fun year.” If that hard work and determination translate into results, there’s no telling how high these Hawks can fly. Senior midfielder Nicole Gerdes battled an injury last season but ranked among the team leaders in goals and points. She will be relied upon to bring her steady presence to the SjU midfield. 2014 SAINT JOSEPH’S FIELD HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE 3

HEAD COACH Lynn Farquhar Old Dominion ‘05 First Season

Lynn Farquhar was named the head coach of the Saint Joseph's field hockey program on July 14, 2014. Most recently the associate head coach at the University of Delaware, she is the 11th head coach in program history.

Katie Brady (nee Grant) has joined the Saint Joseph's field hockey coaching staff in time for the 2014 season. “Katie’s drive and love for the game is a great match for Saint Joseph’s University and our field hockey program,” said head coach Lynn Farquhar upon Brady's appointment. “As a psychology major at Duke and former teacher, Katie embraces individual student development. On the field, her former coaching positions and experience as a standout player with Final Four exposure and National team involvement will help elevate our attack.” Brady joins the Hawks after spending two years as the head varsity coach at St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. She is also the director and coach of the U19 Jackals Field Hockey Club, where she prepares athletes for USA Field Hockey events and additional recruiting opportunities. “I am genuinely excited about becoming a Hawk and the opportunity to join and grow this program,” said Brady. “I’m eager to share my passion and enthusiasm for the game with these talented and motivated young women, while lending guidance and support in their academic endeavors and professional pursuits. It’s an absolute honor to join Lynn and the athletic administration in their efforts to build a tradition of excellence within the Saint Joseph's field hockey program.” Brady began coaching as an assistant at Columbia University from 2010-12, where she was involved with all aspects of the program with a focus on the offensive unit. Brady also served as the head varsity field hockey coach at Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, New Jersey, where she compiled a three-year record of 50-13-3 en route to three conference championships, a Mercer County championship, and the New Jersey State Prep Championship title. A 2006 graduate of Duke University, Brady helped lead the Blue Devils to four NCAA tournaments, three National Championship game appearances, and a consistent top national ranking. A three-time All-American and NCAA All-Tournament Team selection, Brady holds the school record for career assists (61) and points (223) and is a two-time All-ACC selection, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005 and Rookie of the Year honors in 2002. She ranked 11th all-time in career points in Division I field hockey history and inspired the Katie Grant Offensive Player of the Year Award, given annually to the team’s top offensive player. Brady earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in psychology in May 2006. Both during and after her standout career at Duke, Brady was a member of eight National squads and seven Junior National teams. Most recently, she competed in the Women’s National Championships in June of 2012, leading her squad to the tournament title. Also excelling internationally, Brady has played in both the Junior World Cup and the Four-Nation Tournament in Santiago, Chile, the Junior Pan-American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Easter Tournament in Valkenswaard, Netherlands, the Honor Division in Spain, and the Montreal Cup. ASSISTANT COACHES Anna Zarkoski Richmond ‘14 First Season

Recent Richmond graduate Anna Zarkoski, a native of Norristown, Pennsylvania, has joined the Saint Joseph's field hockey coaching staff in time for the 2014 season. “Anna is a great young role model who embodies the meaning of an exemplary student-athlete,” head coach Lynn Farquhar remarked. “Anna’s collegiate career showed distinct improvement throughout each year, and her passion and detailed eye will transfer well into the coaching world. Her goalkeeping expertise will surely strengthen our defensive unit at SJU.” In 2013, Zarkoski became the first Richmond field hockey student-athlete to earn First Team All-America honors, wrapping up an outstanding career between the pipes for the Spiders. She was also named an NCAA Statistical Champion, posting the nation’s highest save percentage (.824) for the second time in three seasons. Zarkoski was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team in 2012 and 2013. She also earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team honors last season, while being named a Third Team All-America, Second Team All-America honoree, and a member of the NFHCA National Academic Team in 2011. She also has experience on the international level, as she was selected for the U.S. National Developmental squad and represented the United States in the 2012 Junior Pan Am Games. An alumna of Villa Maria Academy, Zarkoski graduated from Richmond in 2014 and is pursuing her MBA at Saint Joseph's.

Nick Roydhouse Syracuse ‘12 First Season

Nick Roydhouse has joined Lynn Farquhar's field hockey staff at Saint Joseph's for the 2014 season. "Nick encompasses the spirit of Saint Joseph’s and the magis, to ‘live greater,’” Farquhar said. “We are delighted to have him join the field hockey staff. He brings a fresh perspective and inspirational mentality to the program. His tremendous heart and character are only surpassed by his work rate." Roydhouse played two seasons as a member of the Syracuse men’s soccer program after beginning his collegiate career at Hartwick. He served as captain of the Orange during his senior campaign, when he ranked second on the squad in points. The previous season, he was Syracuse’s leading scorer, contributing four goals. He was named to the Big East AllAcademic Team in each of his two seasons with the Orange. An experienced club coach in both soccer and field hockey, Roydhouse represented his native New Zealand on the soccer pitch at the U-13, U-14, and U-15 levels, and was a member of the squad that took part in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada. The following year, he was selected for New Zealand’s U-23 side in advance of the Olympic Games, but missed the tournament due to injury. Roydhouse graduated from Syracuse in 2012 with a degree in accounting, and will pursue an MBA at Saint Joseph's. 2014 SAINT JOSEPH’S FIELD HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE 7

ELLEN RYAN FIELD After spending three-plus seasons playing home games off-campus, the Hawks returned to City Avenue in 2011 when they opened up the brand new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Named for the recently-retired former assistant athletic director and senior women’s adminstrator, Ryan Field is equipped with a top-of-the-line synthetic AstroTurf12 surface, state-of-the-art water cannons, an irrigation drainage system, a mobile press box, and bleacher seating for 200 fans. Ryan, who retired from Saint Joseph’s in August of 2011, served in the athletic department for 37 years and was the driving force behind the growth of the women’s athletics programs at Saint Joseph’s. She served as SJU’s first women’s basketball coach and also coached the women’s tennis team for a time. Her vision and dedication are the foundation upon which Ryan Field, and the women’s athletics program at Saint Joseph’s, are built. “When you think of women’s athletics at SJU, the first name you think of is, and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope that by putting her name on this field, the University can honor her contributions now and forever.” Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008 through 2010 seasons playing predominantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJU amassed a 12-12 “home” record at the facility during that stretch.

SjU  oN  FINNESEy  FIELD The Hawks called Finnesey Field home for 24 seasons prior to 2008. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 57 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eightschool, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment, adding George Mason University for 2013 and Davidson College in 2014. The additions follow a very successful first year by Virginia Commonwealth University, which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting institutions driven by academics and basketball. The league was deemed the “winner” of conference realignment in 2011-12. The three additions were guided by the five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and

women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 2,653 student-athletes in 2013-14. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports Rebecca Cunfer, the 2004 Atlantic 10 Field Rookie of the year, was named Studentand honors two student-athletes as the hockey Athlete of the year in both 2006 and 2007. Don DiJulia Vice President for Athletics Athletic Director SAINT  joSEPh’S  UNIVERSITy AT h L E T I C S   m I S S I o N   S T AT E m E N T The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others. • To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others. • To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner. • To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as have most campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy both internally and externally. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among the nation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”). 2014 SAINT JOSEPH’S FIELD HOCKEY MEDIA GUIDE 33

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship. IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
