Developing Everyday Champions Dear Hawk Fans, What a remarkable year it has been at Saint Joseph’s University. From the arrival of our new president, Dr. Mark Reed, and the campus visit by Pope Francis; through the A-10 Championship celebration and NCAA Tournament run by our men’s basketball team and conference championships by our men’s cross country and men’s lacrosse teams; to the tremendous success and achievements of our student-athletes throughout the year, 2015-16 has been one for the books. Collectively, our teams posted among the highest cumulative winning percentages in the history of Hawk athletics. Highlights included six squads qualifying for their conference championships and six track standouts competing at the NCAA Regional Meet. Fall, winter and spring, our studentathletes shined, earning awards, shattering school records and lifting our programs to new heights. We strive to Develop Everyday Champions — young men and women who are driven to excel not only in competition, but in their lives and careers beyond Hawk Hill. With that in mind, I could not be more pleased with the manner in which our coaches and teams represented the University. On the field, the track, the river and the court, this year’s success speaks for itself, but I am even more proud of our outstanding accomplishments in the classroom and in the community. This year our teams boasted a cumulative grade point average of 3.11 and a record 348 studentathletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. In addition, our teams embodied the Jesuit ideal of being “men and women for others” by taking part in over 2,500 hours of community service. None of these achievements would be possible without the dedicated and loyal support of our alumni, parents, fans and friends. Your generosity, passion and enthusiasm provides us with the means necessary for our teams to reach their goals and strive for the magis. We have accomplished much, but there is still more to do! Athletic Achievements Men’s Basketball Captures A-10 Title, Returns to NCAA Tournament The Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team posted one of the best seasons in school history in 201516, winning the Atlantic 10 championship and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. Overall, the team compiled a 28-8 record, finishing with the second most wins in program history.

The Hawks captured the A-10 crown by defeating VCU at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the fourth title in school history and the third under head coach Phil Martelli. At the NCAA Tournament, SJU advanced to the round of 32 with a thrilling win over Cincinnati in the opening round in Spokane, Washington. SJU’s run came to an end when it was edged by top-seeded Oregon in the Second Round. Individually, Saint Joseph’s featured two of the top players in the A-10 in DeAndre’ Bembry and Isaiah Miles. The duo, which shared team MVP honors, picked up numerous regional and conference awards. A first round pick in the NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Bembry was named the Player of the Year in both the A-10 and Big 5, while Miles was tabbed as the Most Improved Player on both circuits. Martelli increased his school-record victory total to 403 and was named the Big 5 Coach of the Year for the fourth time. Rounding out the Hawks’ honorees, freshman Lamarr Kimble was chosen to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team and Aaron Brown was an All-Championship selection.

Men’s Cross Country Claims A-10 Title, Places Second at IC4A The SJU Cross Country team turned in one of the most successful seasons in school history, capturing the Atlantic 10 Cross Country title at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia and finishing second at the IC4A Championship.

Led by the All-Conference performances of graduate student Paul Szulewski (4th) and junior Jimmy Daniels (5th), the squad captured the A-10 title for the fifth time in program history (1992, 1998, 2000, 2009) and head coach Mike Glavin earned Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time. At IC4As, SJU received All-East performances from Daniels, senior Quinn Davis and Szulewski to place second at the meet held at Van Cortlandt Park. The Hawks finished as runner-up for the second time in three years, previously claiming the silver in 2013. In addition, the team delivered a seventh-place showing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships.

Athletic Achievements Baseball Wins Liberty Bell Crown, Returns to Postseason

For the third time in five seasons, the Saint Joseph’s baseball team qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship, while also bringing the Liberty Bell Classic title back to Hawk Hill. Overall, the Hawks finished with a record of 31-23, eclipsing the 20-win plateau for the sixth consecutive year and reaching 30 victories for just the second time in program history. Sophomore Deon Stafford, Jr., senior John Brue, juniors Ryan Kelly and Pat Vanderslice and freshmen Charlie Concannon, Tim Brennan and Lucas Rollins headlined a talented group of Hawks who garnered conference, regional and national honors, while head coach Fritz Hamburg became the winningest coach in program history.

Men’s Lacrosse Wins Third Straight NEC Title, Earns Top Awards It was a record-setting season for the SJU men’s lacrosse team, as the squad equaled the best single season record in program history (12-4), earned a share of the Northeast Conference regular season title for the third consecutive year and advanced to the NEC title game. Individually, head coach Taylor Wray was voted the NEC Coach of the Year, junior attackman Mike Rastivo was tabbed as both the NEC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, and junior goalkeeper T.J. Jones was selected as the NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Overall, SJU claimed four of the five major awards and placed seven Hawks on the NEC All-Conference teams.

As a team, the Hawks ranked second in the nation in scoring margin and shot percentage, while Jones finished third nationally in save percentage and goals against average. An ECAC All-Star, face-off specialist Mike Lanham ranked eighth in the country in face-off percentage.

Stafford Jr. Earns All-America, Player of the Year Honors Turning in one of the best single season perfomances in Saint Joseph’s baseball history, sophomore catcher Deon Stafford, Jr., was recognized as a Third Team All-American by Louisville Slugger and an Honorable Mention All-American by Perfect Game/Rawlings.

Stafford, who batted .395 and set new single season records with 85 hits and 18 home runs, was also tabbed as the ECAC, Atlantic 10, and Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player of the Year.

Rastivo Tabbed as Honorable Mention All-American Junior Mike Rastivo was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-American by USILA/Nike, becoming the first player in SJU men’s lacrosse history to earn the distinction.

The 2016 NEC Player and Offensive Player of the Year tied for the league lead in assists per game (1.57) and ranked second in both points per game (3.93) and goals per game (2.36). He led the Hawks with 55 points on 33 goals and 22 assists.

Honors & Awards Bembry Named A-10, Big 5 Player of the Year; Miles Earns Conference Honors Junior DeAndre’ Bembry and senior Isaiah Miles received top honors from the Atlantic 10 and Big 5, as well as earning All-District honors.

Bembry was named the Player of the Year in both the A-10 and Big 5, after averaging 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and a team-high 4.5 assists per game. He was also chosen to the USBWA All-District 2 Team, NABC All-District 4 First Team, the A-10 All-Championship Team and received All-League first team honors from the Atlantic 10 and Big 5. Named the Most Improved Player in both the A-10 and Big 5, Miles also earned NABC AllDistrict, A-10 All-Conference and All-Big 5 honors. He was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Bembry Chosen by Atlanta Hawks in 2016 NBA Draft Junior DeAndre’ Bembry was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks with the 21st overall selection in the 2016 NBA Draft. He is the sixth firstround selection in Saint Joseph’s history and the first since both Jameer Nelson and Delonte West were chosen in 2004.

In addition to Bembry, Isaiah Miles earned an invitation to play in the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks.

Class of 1950 Awards Presented to Miles, Fairbanks

Sarah Fairbanks (women’s basketball, track & field) and Isaiah Miles (men’s basketball) were presented with SJU’s Class of 1950 Awards, as the top graduating student-athletes at Commencement in May. A four-year letterwinner in basketball, Fairbanks ranks as just the second player in SJU history to score more than 1,000 points, grab 600 rebounds and block 100 shots. Twice named the Big 5’s Most Improved Player, she helped the Hawks to two Big 5 titles, two NCAA appearances and the 2013 A-10 crown. As a senior, she joined the SJU track team, setting school records in the discus and shot put. One of the most improved players in the nation, Miles was the leading scorer (18.1) and rebounder (8.1) for the A-10 champion men’s basketball team. He finished his career with 1,097 points, scoring 653 as a senior, the fourth highest total in school history. He also set the SJU record for career free-throw percentage with 84.0 percent.

Honors & Awards Men’s Track Relay Teams Shatter Records, Win IC4A Titles Paced by the record-setting performances of the 4x400 and 4x800 Relay teams of seniors Alec Peabody and Chris Banks, junior Torey Doaty and sophomore David Henderson, the men’s track team posted one of the most remarkable seasons in program history.

Indoors, the Hawks placed fourth at the Atlantic 10 and sixth at the IC4A Championship. At A-10s, Peabody (400m), Doaty (500m) and the 4x400 all captured gold. The 4x400 then returned to the oval at IC4As winning the title at that distance for the first time in program history, while Doaty (500m) and the 4x800 Relay placed second. During the outdoor season, Doaty, Peabody and the 4x400 Relay all represented SJU at the NCAA Regional Championship, with Peabody narrowly missing a trip to the national meet after placing 15th in the 400m. The 4x400 took home titles at the Penn Relays and A-10s, while Peabody (400m) and Doaty (400m H) also claimed A-10 outdoor crowns, helping the team to a sixth-place finish. At IC4As, the 4x800 defended its title, winning the championship for the second straight year. SJU was chosen as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Scholar Team and also earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

Women’s Lacrosse Ties for Second in A-10; Hawks Earn Top Conference, Regional Honors

Concluding the year with the second highest win total in school history, the women’s lacrosse team equaled its best-ever finish in A-10 play finishing tied for second - and advanced to the A-10 Championship for the first time since 2009. Individually, senior Caroline Hagan and juniors Maggie Egan and Nora McCallion were named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team and freshman Rebecca Lane was recognized as the A-10 Rookie of the Year. Egan, who set a new single-season record for assists, was also named to the IWLCA All-Region Second Team and Hagan was selected to play in the IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star Game.

Willocks Earns Top A-10 Field Hockey Honors, Hawks Return to the Postseason Led by the play of freshman Anna Willocks and graduate student Jenny Morris, the SJU field hockey team finished the year tied for second in the Atlantic 10 and reached the postseason for the first time since 2009.

The top freshman scorer in the country, Willocks was named the A-10 Rookie and Offensive Player of the Year after topping the conference in goals (16) and points (36). Morris, meanwhile joined Willocks on the All-Conference First Team and was recognized as a NFHCA “Scholar of Distinction.” In addition, freshman Monica Tice was named to the All-A-10 Second Team. Collectively, the team received an NFHCA National Academic Team Award.

Team Highlights Golf Wins City 6 Invitational Title at Merion Paced by a senior-laden squad, the SJU golf team won the Philadelphia City 6 title at Merion Golf Club. Senior Brian Turley took home medalist honors for the Hawks. For the year, senior T.J. McNulty led the squad with a 75.5 stroke average and four top-20 finishes. As a team, SJU was the recipient of a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for its effort in the classroom.

Women’s Soccer Delivers Record-Setting Season Establishing a new single season record for wins with 13, the women’s soccer team reached the postseason for the third time in four years. As a team, the squad’s third place finish in the Atlantic 10 was the highest in program history.

Individually, junior Emily Gingrich topped the team in goals (11), assists (9) and points (31), garnering First Team All-A-10 and Second Team All-Region honors, as well as being named to the ECAC All-Star Team. Two Hawks, freshmen Paige Bergman and Dakota Mills, were named to the A-10 All-Rookie team. Senior Allison Ebling set single-season (12) and career (23) records for wins, Gingrich broke the season mark for assists (9) and head coach Jess Manella earned her 100th career victory.

Andrews and Fairbanks Power Women’s Basketball Behind the play of seniors Ciara Andrews and Sarah Fairbanks, the SJU women’s basketball team turned in another solid campaign. Among the highlights, SJU won the Hawk Classic title with Andrews being chosen as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Individually, Andrews led the team in scoring and steals, while Fairbanks finished second in points and topped the squad in rebounds, blocks and assists. Both players were named to the All-Big 5 Second Team and surpassed the 1,000 point plateau during the year. In addition, sophomore Chelsea Woods was recognized as the Big 5’s Most Improved Player.

Men’s Soccer Standouts Earn Local, Regional Honors Senior Tim Lazorko was named the Southeastern PA Coaches Association 2015 Player of the Year, after closing his standout career on Hawk Hill. Two other Hawks, senior Emmanuel Temeh and junior Bliss Harris, were named to the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star Team. In addition, freshmen Eddie McCusker and Derek MacKinnon received Soccer Six All-Rookie honors, with MacKinnon also being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.

Team Highlights Softball Advances to Atlantic 10 Championship Game Finishing the season with a flourish, the SJU softball team notched 25 victories and returned to the postseason in 2016, advancing to the A-10 Championship game for the fifth time in program history and the fourth time under head coach Terri Adams.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Melody O’Reilly, the SJU women’s track team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in recent memory, breaking or matching seven school records during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Seniors Sarah Yoos and Brandi Harkness, junior Kaylyn Zierke and freshman Amanda Kulp powered the Hawk attack. Yoos batted .363 with 45 RBIs and clubbed a single season record 13 home runs. Zierke was named First Team All-Atlantic 10, while Harkness and Kulp earned Second Team All-A-10 honors. Kulp was also named to the NFCA All-Region Third Team.

Men’s and Women’s Rowing Post Solid Campaigns

Women’s rowing placed fifth at the A-10 Championship with the Varsity 4 earning a bronze medal. Individually, senior Delaney McGuire was named to the All-Conference First Team, while classmate Brittany Stokes was tabbed to the Second Team. In addition, the Second and Third Varsity 8 boats reached the finals at the Dad Vail Regatta and the Varsity 8 won the petite final. Collectively, the team earned a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA. The men’s team, meanwhile, earned its first Dad Vail medal since 2009 with the Third Varsity 8 placing third.

Women’s Track Enjoys Record-Setting Season

The Hawks placed seventh at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship, the squad’s best result since 2006. Junior Sarah Regnault led the way becoming the third Hawk to win the 1,000m.

Tennis Teams Extend String of Successful Seasons Senior Andres Urrea and junior Kyle Chalmers were named to the Atlantic 10 AllConference Second Team after helping the men’s tennis team to 10-plus victories for the fifth consecutive year and reaching the quarterfinals at the A-10 Championship.

Outdoors, senior Dannah Hayward (400m H) and sophomore Claudine Andre (high jump). represented SJU at the NCAA East Regional Championship. Both athletes also shined at the A-10 Championship with Hayward winning the 400m Hurdles and Andre placing second in the high jump to help SJU to a ninth-place finish. SJU was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Scholar Team and also received an NCAA Public Recognition Award.

On the women’s side, junior Claire Minnoe was named to the All-A-10 Second Team. Each team had players win singles and doubles flight titles at the annual SJU Invitational.

Academic Excellence Eight SJU Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards A total of eight Saint Joseph’s athletic teams earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate, for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The SJU teams receiving recognition were men’s cross country, golf, men’s soccer, men’s track, women’s lacrosse, women’s rowing, women’s soccer and women’s track.

Hehir Awarded Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship Senior Lauren Hehir, captain of the women’s cross country and track teams, was named the recipient of an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship. The interdisciplinary health services major and health care ethics minor will begin an accelerated bachelor’s of nursing program in the fall at Binghamton University and plans to pursue her degree as a nurse practitioner.

Men’s lacrosse seniors Pat Swanick and John Winchell were named USILA Scholar AllAmericans. This marks the first time that two Hawks have been recognized for this honor. In addition, Swanick was recognized as a Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American.

Advancing the Mission Big 5 Enshrines 2003-04 Men’s Basketball Team

In conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the City Series, the 2003-04 SJU men’s basketball team was among five squads that earned induction into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame. Led by National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, that team went undefeated during the regular season, posted a school-best 30-2 record, and was ranked #1 in the nation, before falling to Oklahoma State in the NCAA Elite 8.

SJU Hosts NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship

For the second straight year, Saint Joseph’s University served as the host institution for the NCAA Division I and Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championships at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pa. North Carolina captured the Division I title, while Middlebury won the Division III crown.

SJU Partners with Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment SJU Athletics has partnered with Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment’s Collegiate Services Division on a multiyear agreement to oversee SJU’s corporate sponsorship program. This includes the Hawks’ local broadcast, digital and multimedia assets; athletic venue signage; onsite marketing and promotions.

Demonstrating SJU’s commitment to service, more than 300 student-athletes took part in the Athletic Department’s annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 18. Spreading throughout the local community, members of Saint Joseph’s varsity teams joined along with neighbors in Wynnefield, Overbrook Farms, Bala Cynwyd, Manayunk and Wissahickon to engage in a broad range of service projects.
