As I reflect on the past 12 months, I can truly say that 2013-14 was a year unlike any other in the 105-year history of Saint Joseph’s athletics. The accomplishments of our student-athletes were remarkable. Following the lead of our seniors, this group maximized its experience, embraced our Jesuit mission and accepted the challenge to become Everyday Champions.

In terms of success, this year’s teams won nearly 60 percent of their contests, posting the highest cumulative winning percentage since 1982. Highlights included baseball and men’s and women’s tennis each setting new school records for wins, while men’s basketball captured the Atlantic 10 Championship and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament, women’s basketball returned to the Big Dance and men’s lacrosse won the Northeast Conference regular season title. Individually, our student-athletes and coaches won numerous awards, not only for their performance on the field, but their effort in the classroom and the community. This recognition speaks not only to their physical talent, but their hard work and dedication. They are truly representative of what it means to be Hawk! Finally, we are grateful for the annual support of our alumni, parents, fans and friends. Your generosity provides our student-athletes with the resources necessary to reach their goals and attain the level of success which is highlighted in this Annual Report. SJU Relaunches SJUHawks.com SJU relaunched SJUHawks.com, the official website for Saint Joseph’s athletics, in August. In conjunction with its new technology partner, NeuLion, Inc., the redesigned website features a clean appearance and user-friendly navigation, which brings videos, photos, and audiovisual content to the forefront, as well as offering easier access to social media outlets. Hawks All-Access provides expanded streaming of live games, as well as exclusive access to press conferences for subscribers. Overall the site has received over 3.9 million page views since its launch.

SJU to Host NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships
Saint Joseph's University will serve as the host institution for the 2015 and 2016 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The Philadelphia area has hosted 14 NCAA Championships since 2000.
The SJU Athletic Department saw its presence on social media grow in 2013-14, surpassing 6,800 likes on Facebook and 4,000 followers on Twitter, as well as launching an Instagram page. Athletic Achievements Men’s Basketball Captures Atlantic 10 Championship, NCAA Bid The Saint Joseph's men’s basketball team capped a record-setting season by winning the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Capturing the third Atlantic 10 title and 20th NCAA appearance in program history, SJU finished the season with an overall record of 24-10, falling in overtime to eventual national champion Connecticut in the NCAA Second Round. Seniors Langston Galloway, Halil Kanacevic and Ronald Roberts, Jr. were named to the A-10 All-Conference and All-Championship teams, while freshman DeAndré Bembry was the A-10 Co-Rookie of the Year.
Men’s Lacrosse Claims NEC Title In its first season in the Northeast Conference, the men's lacrosse team went 11-4 overall, including 6-0 in league play, captured the NEC regular season title, and hosted the NEC Championship on Sweeney Field. Taylor Wray was named the NEC Coach of the Year and junior Ryan McGee was tabbed as both the NEC Offensive Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A total of 11 Hawks earned All-Conference honors.
Women’s Basketball Returns to the NCAA Tournament The Saint Joseph's women’s basketball team continued its run of success in 2013-14, capturing the Big 5 title, posting its fourth-straight 20-win season and returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, where it knocked off Georgia to advance to the Second Round. Senior Erin Shields and junior Natasha Cloud led the way for the Hawks, garnering First Team All-Big 5 and Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.

Baseball Sets Record for Wins, Claims Liberty Bell Classic Crown
The SJU baseball team enjoyed the finest season in program history, amassing a school record 35 wins and finishing second in the Atlantic 10. For the second time in three seasons, the Hawks qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship, won the Liberty Bell Classic at Citizens Bank Park, and were named the Big 5 Baseball Team of the Year. Fritz Hamburg earned A-10 and Big 5 Coach of the Year honors, while Collin Forgey and Jordan Carter headlined a list of 10 Hawks receiving postseason accolades by being named A-10 and Big 5 Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

Honors & Awards Forgey Earns All-America, Academic All-America Honors Collin Forgey was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-America Third Team, as well as the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team. The first Hawk to be named Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Baseball Player of the Year, he also garnered ECAC and All-East Region First Team honors, was named to the A-10 and Big 5 All-Academic teams and was voted the Big 5 Baseball Student-Athlete of the Year and the Philadelphia Inquirer Baseball Academic All-Area Performer of the Year.
Carter Named A-10, Big 5 Pitcher of the Year Jordan Carter was named the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Pitcher of the Year. The first Hawk to reach the 10-win plateau in a season, he finished the year 10-4 with a 2.45 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 95.2 innings pitched.
Galloway, Hawkins Receive Class of 1950 Award Mo Hawkins (women’s soccer) and Langston Galloway (men’s basketball) were honored with the Class of 1950 Award as SJU's top graduating student-athletes at the University's Commencement in May. A three-time All-Region selection, Hawkins tied the school record for career goals with 33, while ranking second in career points (78) and third in assists (12). The only player in SJU history to earn All-Conference honors four times, she was named the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year in 2011 and 2012. A three-time All-Atlantic 10 and All-Big 5 selection, Galloway helped the men’s basketball team win the 2014 A-10 Championship. He holds the school's record for career three-point field goals with 334 and ranks second with 1,991 career points.
McGee Tabbed as NEC Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player, Scholar-Athlete of the Year Ryan McGee was named the Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete award winner. A USILA Scholar All-American, he was also a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selection and NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll honoree. McGee led the NEC in scoring with 3.79 points per game and 2.83 goals per game.
Hawk Coaches Garner Top Honors Ian Crookenden, who guided both the men’s and women’s tennis teams to school records for victories in a season, was selected as the USTA Philadelphia Area Tennis District's College Coach of the Year for 2013. Fritz Hamburg was recognized as the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Baseball Coach of the Year after managing the Hawks to a school-record 35 wins, including a program best 18-8 mark in the A-10 and a second-place finish in the conference. Taylor Wray received Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Ian Crookenden Fritz Hamburg Year honors after leading the Hawks to the NEC regular season title and an Tennis Baseball 11-4 overall record.

Honors & Awards Bembry, Gingrich, Mascioli Receive A-10 Top Rookie Honors The future is bright for the Hawks as three student-athletes, DeAndré Bembry (men’s basketball), Emily Gingrich (women’s soccer) and John Mascioli (men’s cross country), were recognized as the top rookie performers in their respective sports by the Atlantic 10 Conference. Bembry, who was also named the Big 5’s top rookie, averaged 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Gingrich finished second on the team and led all rookies in scoring with seven goals and 16 points. Mascioli turned in the top freshman performance at the A-10 Championship.
Leskow Represents SJU at NCAA Track East Regional Senior Aaron Leskow represented Saint Joseph’s at the NCAA East Regional Preliminary Rounds in the 1500m. The senior won the Atlantic 10 indoor mile and outdoor 1500m titles to become the first Hawk since 2006 to earn a gold medal at both A-10 meets in the same year. Additionally, Leskow broke SJU's school record in the 3k in 8:07.07 at IC4As.
Hawk Mascot Named Top Basketball Tradition One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk mascot as named the “Best College Basketball Tradition” by NCAA.com.
Women’s Basketball Standouts Honored by A-10, Big 5
Several women’s basketball standouts were the recipients of top awards by the Atlantic 10 and Big 5. Junior Natasha Cloud was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, senior Erin Shields was named the Big 5 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and sophomore Sarah Fairbanks was tabbed as the Big 5’s Most Improved Player.
Simanski, Hanrahan Compete in Lacrosse All-Star Games Senior captains Johnny Simanski and Brittany Hanrahan were tabbed to play for the South teams at the USILA and IWLCA North-South All-Star Games. The USILA game was played at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium, while the women played at Cabrini College.

16 | Academic All-Area Seniors Erin Shields (women's basketball) and Emma Slattery (women's track and cross country) were the recipients of Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship awards. The tandem were among 10 recipients from A10 member institutions who received $7,000 to contribute towards full-time enrollment in graduate or professional programs.
A business major, Shields was a two-time member of the A-10 Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. Slattery, who majored in biology, was a member of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Cross Country All-Academic Team. Both student-athletes were named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in 2013-14.

Four SJU Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards; Graduation Success Rate Continues to Increase Four Saint Joseph's University athletic teams - golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing and softball - have earned Public Recognition Awards from the National Collegiate Athletic Association for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. It marks the fifth consecutive year that both women's lacrosse and women's rowing have earned this recognition, while it is the third year in a row for the golf program. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter. Recognition Awards
are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their respective APRs. In addition to the APR score, Saint Joseph's University student-athletes continue to make positive progress towards graduation and posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 93 percent, according to the NCAA's 2013 GSR Report. This marks the third consecutive year that SJU's rate has shown an increase. Saint Joseph's rate is higher than the average of all NCAA Division I student-athletes.

Hall of Fame Recognition SJU Inducts 12th Hall of Fame Class, Celebrates 40 Years of Women's Athletics Saint Joseph's University enshrined its 12th Hall of Fame Class and celebrated 40 years of women's varsity athletics at the Athletics Hall of Fame Celebration Brunch in November. The class of 2013 featured: • Laura Barry ’79 (Women's Rowing) • Hayley Davidson ’96 (Field Hockey) • Joe McLaughlin ’53 (Men’s Track & Field) • George Todt ’69 (Men's Soccer) • Boo Williams ’81 (Men's Basketball) and • 1973-74 Women's Basketball Team. The event also celebrated 40 years of women's athletics at SJU as the previous 35 Hall of Fame inductees from women's sports were honored.
Carroll ’05 Inducted into Big 5 Hall of Fame Former men’s basketball standout Pat Carroll ’05 was inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame in April. As a senior, Carroll received the Geasey Award as the Big 5 Player of the Year, was recognized as the Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Year and earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America honors.
Boo Williams ’81 Honored at Basketball Hall of Fame Marcellus “Boo” Williams ’81 was honored at the 2013 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony in September with the Mannie Jackson Basketball's Human Spirit Award. The award recognizes an individual who has found basketball as a contributing aspect to their growth, a place to develop an understanding of others, and an avenue to become a recognized visionary and leader.

Team Highlights Women’s Cross Country Places 3rd at ECACs; Barrett Leads Hawks on Track A third-place team finish at the ECAC Cross Country Championship, as well as notable individual performances by senior Lizzy Barrett, highlighted the year for the women’s track and cross country teams.
Men’s Soccer Returns to the Atlantic 10 Championship For the first time since 1994, the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Hawks won three of their final four A-10 matches to earn the seventh seed and advance to the postseason. A pair of significant wins came in SJU’s 1-0 upset of #25/24 VCU, as well as a 1-0 victory over Temple. Sophomore Tim Lazorko earned a spot on the Philadelphia Soccer Six All-Star Team for the second consecutive year.
Barrett led the Hawk harriers at all eight meets during the fall season, including winning the Friend Big 5 Invitational and garnering All-Conference honors after helping SJU to a sixth-place finish at the A-10 Championship. She was among four Hawks, including seniors Erin Giampietro and Emma Slattery and sophomore Lauren Hehir, who received ECAC All-East recognition. On the track, Barrett anchored the bronze medal DMR at the A-10 Indoor Championships and claimed the bronze in the 1500m at the A-10 Outdoor meet. Two school records were broken as junior Georgia Mason bested her own record in the 60m hurdles (8.82) and the Sprint Medley Relay broke SJU’s 16-year record in the event (4:04.54). At the Ursinus Pentathlon, junior Kayla Charles became the first Hawk to win an indoor pentathlon.
Men’s & Women’s Tennis Post Record Seasons The men’s and women’s tennis teams posted banner seasons in 2014, with both squads breaking school records for dual match victories. The men won 17 matches, recording double-digit wins in three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history, while the women notched 16 wins and racked up double-digit victories for the second straight year, a program first. Individually, junior Aurora Davis was named to the Atlantic 10 Women’s AllConference First Team, becoming just the second Hawk in program history to earn All-Conference honors twice. She was also tabbed to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area squad. On the men’s side, senior Jose Sierra garnered All-Conference Second Team honors for the second consecutive year, while sophomore Andres Urrea was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team. SJU head coach Ian Crookenden was honored as the USTA Philadelphia Area District 2013 College Coach of the Year.

Team Highlights Women’s Rowing Places Third at Atlantic 10 Championships The women's rowing team placed third at the Atlantic 10 Championships, which were held at the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va. Both the Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 took home bronze medals for the Hawks. Individually, senior Myra McCann and junior Amanda McEvoy were named Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team, while sophomore Maura Mahoney earned All-A-10 Second Team honors. The team also received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for its Academic Progress Rating.
Softball Makes Seventh Straight Postseason Appearance Breakout performances by juniors Ashley Alden and Melissa Ruf, sophomore Hannah Dionne and freshman Niki Carillo helped the Hawk softball team earn its seventh straight trip to the A-10 Championship, placing third during the regular season and at the postseason tournament. Alden was named to the NFCA All-Northeast Region Second Team and joined Ruf on the A-10 All-Conference Second Team. Dionne garnered NFCA AllNortheast Region Third Team honors, while Carillo became the first SJU pitcher to be named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
McNulty Leads SJU on the Links Paced by sophomore T.J. McNulty, the golf team finished in seventh place at the A-10 Championship at the TPC Tampa Bay. Named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team, McNulty posted four top-10 finishes and twice earned A-10 Performer of the Week honors during the season.
Men’s Cross Country Places Second at A-10, IC4A Championships; Track Excels at Spring Meets For the second straight year, the men’s cross country team captured the silver medal at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Senior Aaron Leskow and junior Logan Mohn earned All-Conference honors with third- and fifth-place finishes, respectively, while freshman John Mascioli was named the meet's Most Outstanding Rookie. The Hawks also took home the silver medal at IC4As. Mohn and Leskow earned silver and bronze individual medals to lead the Hawks and the duo joined sophomore Quinn Davis and senior Tom O’Kane in receiving IC4A All-East Team honors. In addition, the team earned USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic recognition for the second consecutive year.

On the track, 15 Hawks earned A-10 AllConference honors and 14 received IC4A All-East recognition between the indoor and outdoor seasons. For the second year in a row, the Hawks placed third at the A-10 Indoor Championships, led by gold medal performances in the 800m, mile, 4x8, and DMR. The DMR made history as it broke both the A-10 Indoor and Rhode Island Mackal Field House records with a time of 9:57.64. SJU was the only team to score all three of its relays at the IC4A Indoor Championships and the only team to medal all three of its relays at the A-10 outdoor meet. Sophomore Alec Peabody earned two IC4A All-East honors on the year and owns the second-fastest outdoor 200m time in program history.

Everyday Champions Student-Athletes Participate in MLK Day of Service More than 200 Saint Joseph's student-athletes participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 20, continuing an annual tradition for members of Saint Joseph's athletic squads. Members from 12 varsity teams pitched in to help clean up various areas in the community.

Men's Lacrosse Wins NEC Sportsmanship Award The men's lacrosse team was named the 2014 Northeast Conference Sportsmanship Award winner. The award acknowledges a team that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Standards of Conduct and Principles of Sportsmanship.
In October, former NBA basketball player Chris Herren, the subject of the ESPN “30 for 30” documentary “Unguarded,” spoke to SJU student-athletes about his battle with drug and alcohol addiction. It marked the second consecutive year that Herren spoke on campus as part of SJU's Life Skills program.

Everyday Champions Student Group Developing as Everyday Champions Beginning in the fall of 2013, a collective group of student-athletes began meeting on a monthly basis with the purpose of “Developing as Everyday Champions.” The group’s goal was to integrate their shared interests in sports, life and faith. The group offered an opportunity to learn life skills, build community and reflect on shared experience through programming and events which addressed academics, athletics, spirituality, personal growth and professional development.
2013-14 SERVICE PROJECTS SJU student-athletes exemplified the Jesuit ideal of being “men and women for others” by participating in a broad array of service programs in 2013-14. YEARLONG INITIATIVES
New SAAC Service Program Pits Hawks vs. Cancer Hawks vs. Cancer, a new signature program initiated by the Saint Joseph's StudentAthlete Advisory Committee, promotes prevention, creates awareness, and raises support for cancer research. Launched in 2012 by members of the women’s soccer team and formally established as a student group in 2013-14, Hawks vs. Cancer has worked with each varsity team to host cancer awareness days at home contests. Since its establishment, the group has raised nearly $20,000 for the American Cancer Society and Team BAMit, a nonprofit organization that helps women and their families affected by cervical cancer.

Advancing the Mission Sweeney Field Transforms Gameday on Hawk Hill Longtime University landmark Finnesey Field was rededicated as Sweeney Field this year in conjuction with the completion of an extensive expansion project. The expansion included the addition of 1,200 permanent seats to the hillside nearest to Barbelin Hall, as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats, increasing total seating capacity to 3,000. Named in honor of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), the lead benefactor to the project, renovations also featured a new stone facade highlighted by two dramatic bronze Hawk statues, protective netting behind each goal, a full service press box and an enhanced sound system.
Track and Men’s Soccer Locker Rooms Expanded, Renovated Thanks to generous support of the Norris Locker Room Challenge (track) and the leadership of the Blaney Family (soccer), the men’s and women’s track and men’s soccer locker rooms were expanded and renovated to provide more functional and comfortable spaces for the student-athletes. Highlights included the installation of spacious wooden lockers, new carpet and large screen televisions.
