ELLEN RYAN RETIRES AFTER 37 YEARS AT SAI NT JO SEPH'S

Ellen Ryan, the driving force behind the growth of the women's athletics program at Saint Joseph's University, announced her retirement effective in August. Ryan has served in the Saint Joseph's athletic department for the past 37 years, most recently as associate athletic director and senior women's administrator.

"It was a very difficult decision to retire from Saint Joseph's after 37 years. I've seen so many changes over the years in our program," said Ryan. "The completion of the new varsity playing fields at the Maguire Campus for baseball, field hockey and softball will be the culmination of a dream to see all of our student-athletes benefit from on-campus athletic facilities." "I have been so blessed to be a part of this University for the last 37 years and I will always be a proud Hawk." "Ellen's contributions to Saint Joseph's University, the mission of the athletics department and the welfare of our student-athletes are immeasurable. She was our 'first lady' of women's sports after the university went co-educational in the early 1970's," said director of athletics Don DiJulia. "From her start as the first coach in our proud tradition of women's basketball, and the ensuing three-plus decades, Ellen has been an exemplary role model to countless young men and women. Her legacy will forever be as a witness to the Jesuit and Ignatian mission of 'being a person with and for others.'"

Ellen Ryan was an inaugural member of the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 1999.

Ryan began her career at Saint Joseph's in 1973-74 as head coach of the school's first intercollegiate women's basketball team and guided the Hawks to a 9-2 record. Ryan's Hawks had the distinction of opening the inaugural season against defending national champion Immaculata College, which was in the midst of capturing three straight national titles.

Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball debuted as a intercollegiate sport in 1973-74 under the guidance of Ryan. The Hawks posted a 9-2 mark that year and have since gone on to win over 700 games.

Following that season, Ryan turned over the coaching reins to Theresa Grentz and took a year away from Hawk Hill, returning in the fall of 1975 in the newly-created position of coordinator of women's athletics. She also served as the head coach of the women's tennis team in 1976, leading the Hawks to a 12-6 record. Ryan held the coordinator of women's athletics title for six years before being named assistant athletic director in 1981-82. After 21 years in that role, Ryan was promoted to her current position of associate athletic director for varsity sports, in which she has served for the past nine years.

Under Ryan's guidance, the Saint Joseph's women's athletics program has established a proud tradition and achieved great success. The program has grown from three teams in the early 1970s to the current slate of 10 varsity sports. During her tenure, Ryan has seen SJU's women's teams capture six Atlantic 10 Conference titles and amass a total of 2,091 victories. The women's basketball program alone has totaled 710 victories and made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Hawks' list of former players and coaches is impressive, and includes three Women's Basketball Hall of Famers - former head coach Theresa Grentz, former assistant coach Geno Auriemma, and former assistant coach and player Muffet McGraw - each of whom Ryan had a hand in hiring.

A talented tennis player, Ryan coached the first SJU intercollegiate women’s tennis team. In its SJU honored Ryan in 1999 as a member of the inaugural class of the school's Athletics opening season of 1975-76, the Hawks went 12Hall of Fame. She was also inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 2003 and the SJU 6 under Ryan’s tutelage.

Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

An accomplished athlete, Ryan was a three-time World Basketball Athletic Association All-American and captured a pair of South Jersey Open Tennis championships in the early 1970s. Originally from the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, she spent 16 years as athletic director and the head coach of four sports at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart prior to coming to Saint Joseph's. Her brother, Joe Ryan, played basketball at Villanova and is also a member of the Big 5 Hall of Fame.

2010-11 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

The 2010-11 season was another exciting year on Hawk Hill, highlighted by the women’s rowing team claiming the Atlantic 10 title, the softball team advancing to the A-10 Championship game, the women’s basketball team advancing to the second round of the WNIT and the first A-10 Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year in school history.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Each of the 20 NCAA Division I teams at Saint Joseph’s University experienced triumph and recognition this year, building towards an even more successful 2011-12 campaign.

Just the fourth Hawk to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2000 and 12th overall, McDonnell finished the NCAA Championships 173rd out of 246 runners in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also earned A-10 All-Conference honors with his 14th-place finish at the conference championship.

BASEBALL

A year after setting a new school record for conference wins in a season, the Saint Joseph’s baseball team posted its highest overall win total in 10 years by winning 21 games. Individually, sophomore Greg Kumpel was named to the Atlantic 10 AllConference Second Team and was an All-Philadelphia Big 5 Team selection alongside Kyle Mullen. Additionally, juniors Ryan Kemp and A.J. Holland were Greg Kumpel selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Kemp was selected in the 14th round, 445th overall, by the Cincinnati Reds, while Holland went in the 16th round, 506th overall, to the Atlanta Braves.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

With the youngest squad in the 16 years under coach Phil Martelli, the 2010-11 Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team suffered growing pains, but also showed an abundance of talent and athleticism that should return the Hawks to the Atlantic 10’s elite in future years. The young Hawks made an exciting late-season run that solidified the promise for success in the near future, as they won four of the last six games and fell just three points shy of a berth in the A-10 championship game. Although SJU ended the year with an 11-22 record, the Hawks went 6-5 down the stretch.

Langston Galloway

Freshman Langston Galloway, who earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors five times during the year, was named to the conference’s All-Rookie Team and was chosen as the Big 5 Rookie of the Year. Sophomore Carl Jones, who shared team MVP honors with Galloway, earned a spot on the All-Big 5 Second Team. Freshman C.J. Aiken proved to be one of the top shot blockers in the nation, leading the A10 and ranking third in the nation with 117 blocks, while classmate Ronald Roberts earned a spot in the starting lineup late in the year and thrilled the Hawk fans with his athleticism.

Led by a majority of underclassmen, the men’s cross country team had another highly-competitive season in 2010. Led by junior Kevin McDonnell, the Hawks finished seventh at the Atlantic 10 Championships and placed 12th of 28 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The Saint Joseph’s women’s cross country team started the year out strong, going undefeated in the Duquesne Duals and had some of the strongest runners and individual performances it’s had in several years. Sophomore Maureen O’Donnell paced SJU the entire season, opening with a fourth-place finish at the Duquesne Duals and finished with a 40th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals and 41st -place showing at the ECAC Championships. Freshman Hannah Fuller came on strong at the end of the year, finishing second for the Hawks at the A-10 Championships, NCAA Regional, and ECAC Championships.

FIELD HOCKEY

This past season, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program produced its first-ever Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year in senior forward Nicole McCreight. A First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region selection, McCreight kept the Hawks in the hunt all season, but unfortunately, the Crimson and Gray fell just short of a berth in the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship for the first time since 2000. Seniors Hannah Rogers and Jen Wrublesky continued the tradition of academic excellence as well, earning A-10 All-Academic Team honors.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Expectations for the women’s basketball team were high heading into the 2010-11 season as the Hawks were coming off a Postseason WNIT berth. Despite losing four starters to graduation, the returning roster quickly gelled with its five newcomers to post another banner season. Saint Joseph’s became the 31st team in Division I to record its 700th win and culminated the year with a secondstraight WNIT bid and the program’s first postseason win since 2004.

Michelle Baker

Additionally, junior Michelle Baker was honored as one of the top defenders on the A-10 All-Defensive Team, while freshman Erin Shields earned All-Rookie team accolades. Sophomore Ashley Prim also became the first Hawk to garner Sixth Player of the Year honors by the A-10.

GOLF

2010-11 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

Returning just two starters from last year’s squad, the Saint Joseph’s golf team entered the 2010-11 season looking for its veteran-laden roster to step into bigger roles. While several golfers competed more than in previous years, it was senior Josh Webb and junior Jimmy Bea leading the charge for the Hawks throughout the year.

MEN’S LACROSSE

The 2011 Saint Joseph’s men’s lacrosse team played its first season in the highly competitive Colonial Athletic Association. The Hawks' tough slate consisted of six teams ranked in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association coaches' preseason poll. It turned out to be a rebuilding year for the Hawks with several individual highlights, including senior Scott Cullinan’s selection to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association North-South All-Star game at Goucher College in Baltimore.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Scott Cullinan

The 2011 Saint Joseph’s women’s lacrosse team showed improvements from its previous season. Despite playing with a shortened roster due to injuries, the youthful SJU squad fought throughout the season as it remained competitive in every game and won three more contests than the previous season. Grace Dinn and Elizabeth Fox were both named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team after stellar sophomore campaigns, while senior Kaitlin LaBarbera was selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team.

MEN'S ROWING

The Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing team, with 10 seniors on the squad, showed great improvement as the season went on and began to peak at the end of the year. The Hawks were convinced that if the season was just a few weeks longer, they might have achieved even better results.

The Second Varsity 8

In the season-ending Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the Hawks boated three 8s and two 4s and faced one of the fastest fields in recent history. Saint Joseph’s advanced the Varsity 4, Lightweight 8 and Second Varsity 8 to the semifinals, while the Lightweight 8 was the lone boat to qualify for the Grand Finals. That crew turned in SJU’s best finish at Dad Vails, taking fourth place, with a crew comprised of: Brandon Ciccone, Nick Hoell, Sean Stewart, Matt Benedetto, Michael Gibel, Ryan Pawling, Matt Johnson, Tom Garry and Chris Young.

MEN'S SOCCER

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team continually improved under first-year head coach Don D’Ambra. Although it was a rebuilding year for the program with nearly half of the squad comprised of freshmen, the team showed major signs of improvement. Junior defender Tom Smart was named to the 2010 Philadelphia Soccer Six AllStar team as the Hawks landed a player on the All-Star team for the 19th straight season.

WOMEN’S ROWING

Tom Smart

The Saint Joseph’s women’s rowing team had another banner year in 2011, highlighted by two firsts - the Hawks’ first Atlantic 10 team title and the first-ever gold medal in Second Varsity 8 at the Dad Vail Regatta.

The Hawks and their A-10 foes battled strong currents and windy conditions on the Cooper River for the Atlantic 10 Championships. SJU was one of the favorites in the Varsity 8, but finished second to Dayton in the featured race, while it captured the Freshman 8 for the second time in school history. The gold-medal winning novice boat was comprised of Paige Cesky, Kelsey Larzelere, Victoria Stewart, Alexa Lawson, Kelly Rupert, Molly Lawrence, Stacey Terlik, Laura Buongiorno and Laken Ethun. Saint Joseph’s also earned bronze medals in the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4, to total 49 points and tie Rhode Island and UMass, but the Hawks’ Varsity 8 finish gave them the tiebreaker and their first-ever conference crown. SJU entered the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta with high expectations and didn’t disappoint. The Hawks finished second in the team standings and were the only team to be represented in the finals of the three main events. The Second Varsity 8 led the way, capturing the program’s first gold medal in that event with a crew comprised of Kate Messina, Jenni Broring, Brittany Roth, Ariana McDevitt, Victoria Angelucci, Meaghan Scher, Jackie Castorino, Alex Karls and Rachel Shustack. Additionally, seniors Danielle Brady, Brianne Kammerman and Colleen Smith earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team honors while Clare Burns was chosen to the Second Team. Brady also excelled in the classroom and was chosen to the A-10 All-Academic Team and was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year. Angela Acuña and Alex Karls joined Brady on the Academic All-Area Team.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

2010-11 TEAM HIGHLIGHTS

Playing with a youthful lineup, the 2010 Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team had several outstanding individual performances during the year, but with a rash of injuries to key members, the Hawks were unable to reach their goal of making the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Individually, freshman Mo Hawkins earned A-10 All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team accolades, while junior Maggie Lupinski was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Also, junior Jen Pfeiffer turned in one of the top single-season offensive performances, tallying 10 goals and 23 points, both tying for the fourth most in a season.

MEN’S TENNIS

The 2010-11 Saint Joseph’s men’s tennis squad followed up on its tie for ninth place last season with an eighth-place finish in an increasingly competitive Atlantic 10 Conference. Sophomore Alex Veronis garnered Second Team AllConference honors to lead the way for the Hawks.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Alex Veronis

Playing without a complete roster for most of the 2010-11 season due to injuries, the Saint Joseph’s women’s tennis team showed glimpses of a bright future as several Hawks had standout performances. Playing at the top singles flight, sophomore Casey Robinson became just the third Hawk to earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors. Robinson posted one of the top seasons in SJU history, as her 14 wins at No. 1 singles was just one shy of the all-time single-season mark. Freshman Devi Jadeja made a smooth transition to the collegiate game, tying her for the second-most wins in a single season with 15, while senior Maggie Mullaney capped her career with 43 singles victories, finishing second on the all-time list.

SOFTBALL

The Saint Joseph’s softball team continued to climb the rungs of success in 2011, posting the program’s first 30-win season since 2002 and making a wild run to its second A-10 title game in the past three years. Led by a veteran-laden team, head coach Terri Adams got the most out of her squad, as the Hawks claimed the Carolina Classic early in the season and fought through a pair of extra-inning affairs to advance to the A-10 Championship game. Proving to be one of the top players in the region, sophomore Dana Parks set the SJU single-season record for hits (67) and stolen bases (20) en route to earning All-Region First Team, A-10 All-Conference First Team, A-10 All-Academic Team and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team accolades. In the circle, junior Erin Gallagher Dana Parks again ranked amongst the top pitchers in the conference, earning A-10 All-Conference Second Team, All-Region Second Team and A10 All-Tournament Team honors, while classmates Bernadette Moran and Monica Aguilar were A-10 All-Conference First and Second Team selections, respectively. Senior Dana Bieniek earned her second A-10 All-Tournament Team accolade, and was named South Jersey Softball Coaches Association College Player of the Year, while junior Alaina Loguidice earned AllTournament Team honors.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The Saint Joseph’s men’s track team had several standout individual performances in 2010-11, with the Hawks’ indoor season being the most successful as they saw five individuals and three relays qualify for the IC4As. The Hawks, who finished eighth at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships, were led by All-Conference honoree Jared Sabre’s second-place finish in the 500m. At the A-10 Outdoor Championships, Sabre and junior Kevin McDonnell placed third in the 400m and 10,000m, respectively. The Hawks wrapped up the season at the IC4A Championships, with McDonnell qualifying for the Kevin McDonnell 10,000m at the NCAA East Regional. He recorded a personal-best time to take 23rd at the regional meet.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

The Saint Joseph’s women’s track team had successful 2010-11 seasons, setting seven school records and qualifying for ECAC Championships in 14 different events. The indoor season was highlighted by the setting of school records from junior Stefani Zabilowicz in both the 55m hurdles and the 60m hurdles; Kristin Andrews in the 500m; and the 4x800m relay squad of Andrews, Kelsey Rose, Emma Slattery and Kathleen Casey. The outdoor season saw four more school records fall as sophomore Maureen O’Donnell and Jessica Di Cicco broke school marks in the 3,000m steeplechase and the 10,000m run, respectively.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY FOR MAGUIRE CAMPUS FIELDS

As 2010-11 drew to a close, Saint Joseph's University began construction for four playing fields – three varsity and one intramural - on the James J. Maguire '58 campus.

In a message to the campus community, then-University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., said,” There will be athletics – varsity and intramural – on the Maguire playing fields. This is indeed good news, for our students and for the entire University community.” SJU field hockey, baseball and softball will now have on-campus fields for practice and competition. For numerous years, the teams had to travel off-campus for practices and games. Construction began once the University received confirmation that it had been granted a special exception by the local township zoning board paving the way for Saint Joseph’s to make the necessary modifications to the existing fields so that they are NCAA Division I compliant for varsity athletics. Construction is to be completed by the start of each team's 2011-12 playing season and will include the installation of a public address system, bleacher seating and artificial playing surfaces. “We are pleased with the outcome,” said current interim University president John Smithson. “Our student athletes will now be able to use the fields as they were intended and this will enhance campus life for all of us.”

The Saint Joseph’s baseball, field hockey and softball teams will play their home games on their newly-created fields at the James J. Maguire ‘58 Campus beginning in 2011-12

The Saint Joseph’s baseball team will play at its own on-campus site for the first time since 1958 when the Hawks take the field in 2012. Located adjacent to City Avenue, the new field hockey field will offer Hawk fans easy access from both the University’s main campus and the James J. Maguire ‘58 campus.

Construction crews work on laying the foundation of the new field hockey field during the summer of 2011.

Formerly the site of Episcopal Academy’s football field, the Hawks’ softball team opens play in the spring of 2012 at its newlycreated field made of synthetic turf and includes batting cages, stands and a press box.

ST ANDOUT HAWKS MCCREIGHT NAMED ATLANTIC 10 FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Saint Joseph's senior forward Nicole McCreight was chosen as the 2010 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.

McCreight scored 17 goals and added three assists for 37 points, notching the highest single-season goal total by a Hawk since 1986 (third highest all-time) and the fourth-highest single season point total in SJU history. She started all 19 games for the Hawks after appearing in just 15 over her first three seasons due to injuries. She is the first Hawk to be named Offensive Player of the Year.

Nicole McCreight

"It's really exciting," McCreight said. "Coming back after all the adversity that I faced over the last three years, it was great to be able to contribute and be part of the team. It was important to me to prove myself to my teammates who stuck by me and kept me going...I wanted to do it for them."

"She really deserves it," said head coach Michelle Finegan. "She has a very strong work ethic...it was disappointing that she wasn't able to get on the field [her first three seasons]. But she worked hard for those four years, and for her to come out in her senior year and get these accolades is exciting. I'm so happy for her and she deserves it all."

McCreight led the Hawks and tied for second in the Atlantic 10 in goals and points. She also led the A-10 in goals (seven) and points (15) in conference play. McCreight tallied in six of seven conference games this season and scored at least one goal in each of SJU's last seven contests. In addition, she posted three multi-goal games, including a fourgoal outburst against Bucknell on August 29 that tied a school record for goals in a game. Her three game-winning goals were also the best mark on the team.

BRADY AND SABRE SELECTED AS CLASS OF 1950 AWARD RECIPIENTS

Danielle Brady (Women's Rowing) and Jared Sabre (Men's Track) were named Saint Joseph's Outstanding Senior Student-Athletes and will each received the Class of 1950 award at the University's Commencement.

A three-time Atlantic 10 champion, Brady has won the top honors in both the Varsity 8 and Quad events over her career. A three-time silver medalist at the conference meet, the co-captain helped SJU to its first-ever A10 title this April, earning All-Conference First Team accolades along the way. A member of the SJU crew that participated in the 2010 Henley Royal Regatta, she has earned A-10 All-Academic Team honors, and has been a member of both the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the SJU Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

Sabre placed second in the 500m at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships, earning All-Conference honors. Earning All-East honors after finishing third in same event at IC4As, Sabre recorded career-best times in three events this season and a key contributor to the 4x400m relay team. A member of the A-10 All-Academic Team, the co-captain has also earned both A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll distinctions.

WOMEN'S ROWING GRADUATE COLLEEN SMITH ACCEPTED INTO THE PEACE CORPS

Saint Joseph's women's rowing standout and 2011 graduate Colleen Smith was accepted into the Peace Corps and assigned to a two-year placement in Ukraine. Smith earned Atlantic 10 All-Championship First Team honors this year as the Hawks captured their first-ever Atlantic 10 team title. A three-year member of the Varsity 8, she helped that boat to an A10 title in 2009 and a silver medal this past year. She was part of the Hawks' gold-medal winning Varsity 8 in the 2010 Dad Vail Regatta and a member of the Hawks' crew that made the program's second trip to the Henley Royal Regatta in 2010.

Named the team's Scholar-Athlete in 2011, Smith earned multiple mentions on both the A-10 Commissioner's and Saint Joseph's Athletic Director's Honor Rolls during her career. A native of Seaville, N.J., she graduated from SJU with a double major in English and Fine and Performing Arts.

Colleen Smith

Smith, who was active in community service while at Saint Joseph's, will be teaching English and leading discussions on the history and culture of the United States at the secondary level in Ukraine. She also plans to work promoting HIV/AIDS prevention and care and will begin her work in September.
