SEASON OUTLOOK In 2011, a new era of Saint Joseph’s field hockey began with the opening of the brand new, state-of-the-art pitch at Ellen Ryan Field. One year after returning to campus for the first time in nearly four years, the Hawks are looking to make another return in 2012 as SJU aims for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship after near-misses in each of the past two seasons. Head coach Michelle Finegan, in her 16th season on the Saint Joseph’s sideline, feels that she has a team capable of returning the Hawk program to its winning ways. “We have recruited strong players, we have our own field that allows us to have more sessions to improve our skill level, and we have a really tight team,” Finegan said. These traits will go a long way towards helping the Hawks reach their ultimate goal. The foundation is in place, and Finegan knows what her charges need to do in order to build on it and return to the upper echelon of the Atlantic 10. “We have to play well against some of the top teams,” she explained. “Last season, we lost two one-goal games late in the season; we need to win those games.” This season, the Hawks will be able to take full advantage of their new facility at Ellen Ryan Field. Equipped with a topof-the-line synthetic AstroTurf12 surface, water cannons, an irrigation drainage system, and bleacher seating for 200 spectators, the field will provide the Hawks with increased practice flexibility and a noticeable home pitch advantage. “It’s one of the top facilities in the area,” Finegan said. “Being able to practice on the wet turf allows us to adjust to the pace of the game. When you can practice at game speed, you will play better.” Joining Finegan on the sideline during those practices and games for a second season is assistant coach Jessica Javelet. They generate enthusiasm, and they’re encouraging and supportive. They’re really strong leaders, and I think that will benefit our team. “They’re going to be in a situation where there are a lot of young players on the field,” she continued. “However, those young players are going to be comfortable because of the atmosphere that they’ve created.” Deininger will be one of Finegan’s midfield leaders this season, having started all 16 games she played last season, while Hoover will hold down the fort in the defensive backfield. Fellow seniors Jordan Cotter and Meghan Githens will be counted on as well to provide a steady, guiding hand. After battling injuries last season, Cotter is primed to contribute as a part of the attacking corps, while Githens will look to build on her strong junior campaign as she moves into a starting role in the Hawk midfield. Finegan has plenty of young offensive firepower at her disposal, starting with 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie honoree Jordan Martin. Martin tallied six goals and 14 points during her freshman season, and will be relied upon to produce at a similar rate in 2012. Incoming freshmen Rachael Brosious and Aniek Koman are talented players that will see a large chunk of playing time on the front line. Brosious comes to Hawk Hill from nearby Archbishop Carroll High School, while Koman continues the tradition of Hawk imports from the Netherlands. After spending her initial years in the Crimson and Gray primarily as a midfielder, Cotter will move up to the forward ranks for her senior season. Also in that group are sophomores Gina Brown, Megan DeMarco, Moira Penza, and Tori Popinko, and freshman Sarah Yerk.

HEAD COACH Michelle Finegan Delaware ‘84 16th Season

Since returning in 2003 for her second stint as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's University field hockey team, Michelle Finegan has guided the Hawk program to new heights. Finegan’s return coincided with the program’s most successful stretch in 20 years, as Saint Joseph’s recorded five consecutive seasons with double-digit wins (2004-2008) for just the second time in its history. In 2011, Finegan presided over the Hawks’ return to campus as the brand-new, state-of-the-art Ellen Ryan Field opened on September 24. The Hawks notched their first win on the new pitch a few weeks later, toppling rival Villanova, 3-2 in FINEGAN’S RÉSUMÉ overtime, on October 12. It was the natural culmination of Finegan’s rebuilding efforts as the Hawks had qualified for the A-10 Tournament in three of her final four seasons before she took over the head coaching position at Lehigh. An excellent player at both the collegiate and national levels, Finegan was a standout defensive player at the University of Delaware (1978-81), helping the Blue Hens place third in the nation as a junior. She was a member of the United States National Team from 1981-86 and was an alternate on the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team that won the bronze medal in Los Angeles. She came out of retirement as a player in 1993 to start for the U.S. National Team that placed fifth at the Intercontinental Cup and qualified the U.S. for the 1994 World Cup. Actively involved with the United States Field Hockey Association for more than two decades, Finegan has played a role in developing players throughout the nation since the inception of the USFHA Futures Program. ASSISTANT COACHES Jessica Javelet Louisville ‘07 Second Season

Former University of Louisville standout Jessica Javelet returns to head coach Michelle Finegan’s coaching staff for a second season in 2012. This past summer, Javelet became the first full-time assistant coach in program history. Javelet came to Saint Joseph’s from her alma mater, Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons. The Rancho Santa Fe, California native has also spent time with the United States Field Hockey Futures Program, where she has worked with the national U-14, U-16, and U-19 programs since 2004. A decorated player at Louisville, Javelet was a First Team All-American as a senior and earned Big East Offensive Player of the Year and All-Conference First Team honors as well. As a junior, she led Division I in goals, finding the cage 30 times, and was a finalist for the Honda Award, given to the top female college athlete in 12 different sports. Javelet was also a finalist for the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. During her collegiate career, she also spent time as a member of the USA Field Hockey U-21 Junior National Team. Off the field, Javelet was the University of Louisville’s Most Outstanding Graduating Senior and was the valedictorian for the Class of 2007. Among her academic accolades, she was twice named an Academic First Team All-American; in 2007 she was awarded an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was named the Big East’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. After college, Javelet played for the National Field Hockey Development Team from 2006 to 2009 and spent the 2009 season with Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany. She also took part in the Women’s High Performance National Championship for three seasons as part of the MidWest squad. Javelet graduated from Louisville in 2007 with a degree in marketing.

ASSISTANT COACHES Chelsea Cipriani Wake Forest ‘08 First Season

Former Wake Forest captain and NCAA Division I national champion Chelsea Cipriani joins the Hawk coaching staff for her first season in 2012. She had spent the previous year at Delaware after three season at Longwood. Cipriani helped lead the Blue Hens to nine wins and an appearance in the CAA Tournament in 2011. While she was at Longwood, the Lancers won 28 games and earned a pair of third-place finishes in the NorPac Conference. During her collegiate career, Cipriani was an All-South Region honoree and helped lead Wake Forest to four consecutive Final Four appearances, including a national championship in 2004. Cipriani was also a key part of the Demon Deacons’ runs to an undefeated regular season in 2005 and the ACC tournament championship and national runner-up status in 2006. Cipriani notched 29 goals in her four seasons, including a career-high 13 in 2006 and led the Demon Deacons with 12 as a senior in 2007, when she was named to the All-South Region First Team and was tabbed as the South Jersey Collegiate Field Hockey Player of the Year. Cipriani was also named the Gloucester County Times Player of the Year as a senior at West Deptford High School in 2003 and was recently inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. A member of the USA Olympic Development Program from 2001 to 2003, Cipriani has worked extensively with USA Field Hockey as a coach, Futures Site Director, and Futures Regional Selector. She also holds a Level 2 coaching certification from USA Field Hockey. Competing for the South Region Team, Cipriani took part in the 2010 Women’s High Performance National Championship, where her squad finished third. A native of West Deptford, N.J., Cipriani earned a degree in communications from Wake Forest in 2008.

ELLEN RYAN FIELD After spending three-plus seasons playing home games off-campus, the Hawks returned to City Avenue in 2011 when they opened up the brand new Ellen Ryan Field on the Maguire Campus. Named for the recently-retired former assistant athletic director and senior women’s adminstrator, Ryan Field is equipped with a top-of-the-line synthetic AstroTurf12 surface, state-of-the-art water cannons, an irrigation drainage system, a mobile press box, and bleacher seating for 200 fans. Ryan, who retired from Saint Joseph’s in August of 2011, served in the athletic department for 37 years and was the driving force behind the growth of the women’s athletics programs at Saint Joseph’s. She served as SJU’s first women’s basketball coach and also coached the women’s tennis team for a time. Her vision and dedication are the foundation upon which Ryan Field, and the women’s athletics program at Saint Joseph’s, are built. “When you think of women’s athletics at SJU, the first name you think of is, and should be, Ellen Ryan,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia. “We hope that by putting her name on this field, the University can honor her contributions now and forever.” Saint Joseph’s spent the 2008 through 2010 seasons playing predominantly at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJU amassed a 12-12 “home” record at the facility during that stretch.

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 55 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

2011 YEAR IN REVIEW After playing three and a half seasons of home games away from campus, the Saint Joseph’s field hockey program finally christened the brand new Ellen Ryan Field along City Avenue during the 2011 season. An increase in attendance, as a result of improved visibility in the campus community, began to show itself immediately and culminated in the Hawks winning two of their final three home contests. Saint Joseph’s started the season with a challenging early schedule, falling at nationally-ranked Drexel and taking on both Ohio and Towson as part of the annual Temple Tournament. The Hawks battled hard against a tough Dragon squad before ultimately succumbing, while Ohio, which received votes in the NFHCA Coaches’ Poll throughout the season, came away with a win in the neutral site game. For her efforts during the Temple Tournament, senior Ellen Rowe earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors on September 6. The Hawks earned their first two wins of the season in their final two “home” games at Drexel’s Buckley Field. SJU took down local rival Penn, 3-1, before closing out its stay across town with a 1-0 win over Lehigh. Junior Meghan Githens tallied her first career goal with just under 11 minutes left in the game to give senior goalkeeper Liz Messaros all the offense she would need in her first career shutout. Six days later, Saint Joseph’s opened up Ellen Ryan Field with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Delaware. Senior Theresa Testa scored the first goal at the new facility less than four minutes into the second half, while freshman Jordan Martin notched a pair of goals to secure the A-10 Rookie of the Week award. After falling to 11th-ranked California at home, the Hawks routed Siena, 7-1, for their first away win of the season. Freshman Nicole Gerdes scored the first two goals of the game and added an assist to win SJU’s second consecutive Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor. Saint Joseph’s officially dedicated Ellen Ryan Field in a pregame ceremony before the Hawks met up with Temple to open the conference slate. Despite not earning the victory, SJU used the game as a springboard towards winning its next two contests, a 10 road win at Georgetown, and a 3-2 overtime thriller at home against Villanova. The win over the Wildcats, the first Hawk victory at Ellen Ryan Field, went down to the wire as Testa scored her second goal of the game on a penalty corner with no time left on the clock. Senior Therese Doyle, who assisted on both of Testa’s regulation goals, scored the overtime winner on a blast from just inside the circle to give the Hawks their first win at the new facility. The Hawks then hit a rough patch in conference play, including a pair of gut-wrenching 2-1 road losses at La Salle and Lock Haven (in double overtime), but finished the season on a high note, coming from behind to top Saint Louis, 3-1, in the season finale at home on Senior Day. Doyle was rewarded for her career year by the league’s coaches with an All-Atlantic 10 First Team nod. Rowe, who cracked the program’s all-time top 10 in career goals, was a Second Team honoree. Martin received All-Rookie honors as well. Rowe was also tabbed for the league’s All-Academic squad alongside Githens and Testa. Testa also finished the season among the league leaders in assists and moved into a tie for 10th in program history with 15 career assists. Eleven Hawks were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad, including Doyle, Testa, and fellow senior Rachel Walsh, who earned the honor for the fourth consecutive season. The Hawks once again had the association’s Academic Team Award bestowed upon them as well for having cumulative team grade point average above 3.0.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Butler University, the University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University, Temple University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University. In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating the sweeping conference realignment issues, adding Butler University and Virginia Commonwealth University, both of which began full membership on July 1, 2012. The league was declared the “winner” of conference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institutions. The additions were part of a five-year Strategic Initiative Plan that was adopted during the 2010-11 academic year. The 16 member institutions of the A10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 82 million people within its geographic footprint of nine states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a

3.5 grade point average or better, recognized a record 2,728 student-athletes in 2011-12. The league sponsors Academic AllConference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate scholarship grants to qualified studentathletes. In 2011-12, nearly 200 studentathletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Dayton’s Yvonne Marten, Jennifer Nalepa from Saint Louis, Marissa Norman of Rhode Island and Charlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduate scholarship grants. The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than 950 Division I sports teams being honored with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The Atlantic 10 Conference ranks fourth in number of teams publically recognized by the NCAA and fifth in overall APR average among all 32 Division I Conferences with a 981 average. The league boasted 40 squads with perfect scores and 104 teams with a score of 990 or better. In total, 188 A-10 teams Cunfer, the 2004 Atlantic 10 Field were at or above the national average, Rebecca Hockey Rookie of the Year, was named Studentrepresenting 70 percent of all A-10 teams. Athlete of the Year in both 2006 and 2007. Of the 21 championship sponsored sports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport average ATLANTIC 10 STAFF DIRECTORY higher than the national average. There are six sports (field hockey, women's cross Commissioner Bernadette V. Ed Pasque The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place ranking in the single-year Graduation Associate Commissioner Success Rate (GSR) among all Division I Wendy Larry leagues. Measured in a six-year window, Associate Commissioner 89 percent of freshman enrolling in an AJay DeFruscio 10 institution in 2004 graduated. Twelve of the league's institutions were above Assistant Commissioner Jill Redmond the national four-year GSR average of 8o percent and five of those programs, Director of Media Relations Dayton, George Washington, Richmond, Drew Dickerson Saint Joseph's and Xavier are all over 90 Associate Director of Communications percent. The Atlantic 10 also rates in the Melissa Kristofak Top 10 in men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball in the single-year Advance Media and Communications GSR. The league is ninth nationally in Caitlin Bonner men's basketball, graduating at a 74 perMedia Relations Intern (Field Hockey Contact) cent rate, nearly seven percent above the Kacen Delphin national average. In women's basketball the league ranks sixth with an incredible Director of Championships Lucas Feller 96 percent graduation rate for its 2004 freshman class, 10 percent higher than the national average. In baseball, the A-10 is tied for third nationally with an 87 percent GSR, also 10 percent higher than the national average.

Don DiJulia Vice President for Athletics Athletic Director SAINT JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the Athletics Department at Saint Joseph’s University reflects the Mission of the University by using the programs within Athletics as a way to develop the whole person and preparing men and women for others. • To educate the whole person by complementing the academic experience with athletic and recreational programs and activities outside the classroom. • To create an environment for personal growth through openness, respect, and a concern for others. • To communicate the value of community and family through team work and sportsmanship. • To provide opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, decision-making, and attainment of goals. • To provide opportunities for students to participate and compete in a first-class manner. • To provide equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities. • To advance the University regionally and nationally through intercollegiate athletics.

WHY S-A-I-N-T JOSEPH’S UNIVERSITY?

The corporate title “S-a-i-n-t” Joseph’s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph’s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. Previously, the abbreviation “St.” Joseph’s University was permitted in a number of alumni and athletic contexts. The vast majority of academic and government publications have referred to Saint Joseph’s University since at least 1986, as have most campus references with the exception of athletics. However, a university-wide “image campaign” has revealed the need to clarify this policy both internally and externally. According to the most recent edition of the Higher Education Directory, there are at least nine recognized “St. Joseph’s” among the nation’s colleges and universities. Only one of them – Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia – is a university-level, Master’s I, NCAA Division I institution. A complete spelling of Saint Joseph’s University in all contexts will help eliminate any confusion among higher education and other public constituencies. Style information for print, electronic and digital media is available. It includes accepted abbreviations of the corporate name (e.g., “SJU” or “St. Joe’s” in headlines or certain informal references) as well as prohibited usages (e.g., partial abbreviations such as “St. Joseph’s” or “Saint Joe’s”). THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,600 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-squarefoot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and closeknit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a bigtime “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in firsttime jobs, professional schools and other advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling. PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
