2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Last year, the Hawks were led by eight upperclassmen – four juniors and four sophomores – on a young squad that was void of senior leadership but full of unwavering determination. This year, all eight of those Hawks return in senior and junior leadership roles to guide the Hawks into the 2015 season. Under the direction of first-year head coach Melody O’Reilly, the Hawks will look to their veterans for experience and direction en route to making a run at the Atlantic 10 Championship. “The girls are very open to change, and they’re excited,” said O’Reilly. “Experience will carry this team, and I am really optimistic and excited about the talent that I see. I’m looking forward to getting started.” The Hawks return all seven point scorers from last year’s Atlantic 10 Championship in seniors Lauren Hehir (31st), Emily Chaundy (57th), Kathryn Cols (85th), and Sara Radzwilka (88th) and sophomores Sydney Coughlin (92nd), June Chiango (93rd), and Julia Jenkins (95th).
Senior Emily Chaundy
Senior Lauren Hehir
Hehir and Radzwilka will enter their second seasons as captains for the Crimson and Gray. Saint Joseph’s 2014 Most Outstanding Performer after leading the Hawks in all eight races last season, Hehir returns for her fourth and final season in 2015. Hehir finished 31st at 2014 A-10s and has scored at three consecutive A-10 meets. The senior standout turned in four top-20 finishes throughout her first four races of season and owns 5k (17:50) and 6k (21:39.2) collegiate-bests heading into the fall. The senior trio of Chaundy, Cols, and Radzwilka will add veteran depth to the top of SJU’s running group. All three Hawks raced seven times apiece last season and finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, at A-10s. Chaundy (23:24), Cols (23:27.6), and Radzwilka (23:15.6) destroyed their 6k collegiate-bests last season and while Chaundy was SJU’s #2 runner at A-10s and Radzwilka was SJU’s #2 runner at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, Cols scored as all seven scorable meets.

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK Entering her third season for the Crimson and Gray, Coughlin was one of three runners to compete in all eight races last year and improved upon her PRs in all events, including the 5k (19:40.8) and 6k (23:36.1). Both Chiango and Jenkins raced their first years on the cross country squad last fall; Chiango, a transfer from Goucher College, competed in all eight races and improved upon her 5k (19:51.4) and 6k (23:44.7) PRs while Jenkins led all SJU rookies in five races and was SJU’s #2 runner at the ECAC Championship and #3 runner at regionals. The Hawks will gain additional depth from junior Sarah Regnault, who scored at ECACs, and sophomore Alicia EzekielPipkin, SJU’s only then-freshman to race A-10s last year. Junior Alexandra Fiesel, and sophomores Megan O’Dowd and Cassidy Weimer will round out the returning Hawks.

"The freshmen will make an impact this year," added O'Reilly of her newcomers. “They have goals,” said O’Reilly of her first squad as a collegiate head coach. “And they have to believe in what they set.” Senior Sara Radzwilka

HEAD COACH Melody O’Reilly Head Coach - First Season University of Arkansas ‘89
Melody O’Reilly enters her first season as the head coach of the Saint Joseph's women's track and field and cross country programs in 2015-16. O'Reilly was named the head coach of the Hawks on August 6, 2015. Most recently the head girl' varsity track and field and cross country coach at Bishop Shanahan High School, O'Reilly is the third head coach in program history. “We are thrilled to have Melody join our coaching staff,” said Director of Athletics Don DiJulia. “She fits our mission and vision, knows the area and collegiate landscape, and has been a championship-level competitor, successful coach, and part of our community over the years. We look forward to partnering with her to develop Everyday Champions with our student-athletes in the women's cross country and track programs.” “Being named head coach of the women's cross country and track and field proO’REILLY’S COACHING RÉSUMÉ grams at SJU is an honor,” said O’Reilly. “It won't be easy to step into Coach Quinn’s Head Coach Years shoes, but I look forward to the challenge, and I hope I can uphold the strong tradiWomen’s Cross Country and Track tion of excellence and dedication to the sport that he has instilled in his athletes in the Saint Joseph’s 2015-present past. I look forward to working with the wonderful young women at Saint Joseph’s.” Bishop Shanahan High School 2013-2015 A collegiate middle distance standout, O’Reilly (nee Sye) spent the last two years Friends Central School 1994 as the head girls’ varsity track and field and cross country coach at Bishop Shanahan Assistant Coach High School in Downingtown, Pa. She has served as the head track and field and cross Women’s Cross Country and Track country coach and program director for St. Elizabeth CYO and board member of the Haverford College 1995-2002 St. Elizabeth Athletic Ministry since 2008. Student-Athlete Years O’Reilly replaces Kevin Quinn, who announced his retirement earlier this summer University of Arkansas 1985-89 after 49 seasons between the men’s and women’s programs at Saint Joseph’s • 5x All-American University. • Held 10 school records upon graduation Prior to her stint at Bishop Shanahan, O’Reilly served as the assistant coach for the track and field and cross country programs at Haverford College from 1995-2002. She was the head cross country coach at Friends Central School in 1994. A 1989 graduate of the University of Arkansas, O’Reilly held 10 school records upon graduation and was the first female Razorback to be named an All-American five times in any sport – twice in cross country and once each in the indoor 1000 meters, indoor 1500 meters, and indoor mile. She went on to qualify for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials and represented the United States on multiple national teams. O’Reilly was inducted in the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1996, becoming the second female inductee in the history of the University, the South Jersey Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame in 2014, becoming the first female inductee from any sport at that school. “Getting back into coaching at the collegiate level has been a goal of mine for a while,” added O’Reilly. “I'm so happy it's here at St. Joe’s. I worked in the training room many years ago, and when I came back, many faces were still the same. It feels like I'm coming home.” O’Reilly is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and has coached athletes that have gone on to compete at the national level while working at Haverford College, including standout Meredith Unger. O’Reilly also coached Pam Stevens, a visually-impaired 400m runner, to the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. O’Reilly received a bachelor’s of science degree in fashion merchandising from Arkansas in 1989. She earned a certification in massage therapy from the Pennsylvania School of Muscle Therapy from 1992-93 and went on to work as a massage therapist at Saint Joseph’s University from 1997-2001. 2015 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE 4
SWEENEY FIELD/FAIRMOUNT PARK THE HAWK
Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has been home to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s University in over 80 years of use. The track is the current home of the men’s and women’s track and field teams while the pitch is the current home of the men’s and women’s soccer teams and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numerous changes over the years. The most recent upgrade occured this summer, as the TigerTurf that was laid down in 2008 was replaced with FieldTurf and Saint Joseph’s track was resurfaced. One of the largest municipal parks in the United States, Fairmount Park includes several excellent training venues for Saint Joseph's runners. The Hawks benefit from the use of the Wissahickon Trail, Belmont Plateau, and both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kelly Drives (also known as West and East River Drives, respectively). All are just minutes away from Hawk Hill and are among the most favored spots for Philadelphia's running community. The Belmont Plateau serves as SJU cross country’s home course. It is Philadelphia's primary high school and college cross country course and is considered one of the most challenging in the country.
THE HAWK
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die." Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season. The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its over 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basketball-only affiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21sport league that is universally hailed as one of the best conferences in the country, and is celebrating its 40thanniversary in 2015-16. That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic 10 – Davidson College, The University of Dayton, Duquesne University, Fordham University, George Mason University, The George Washington University, La Salle University, University of Massachusetts, University of Rhode Island, University of Richmond, St. Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph's University, Saint Louis University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigating sweeping conference realignment over the last few years, adding Davidson College, George Mason University and Virginia Commonwealth University. The additions have proven successful with all three institutions winning regular season and tournament championships. The league continues to draw national praise for its decisions during conference realignment in selecting strong academic institutions with basketball-centric, robust athletic programs. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private university or a land grant institution. The varied pursuits of each member prove that there are many threads that weave the fabric for a great conference. The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total population of over 76.5 million people within its geographic footprint of eight states and the District of Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sports this year: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,
men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball. The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, have made a strong commitment to making the academic and athletics equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to better recognize the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes. The Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or better, recognized 3,029 student-athletes in 2014-15, a record for a 14-team A-10. The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and honors two student-athletes as the A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides $70,000 in postgraduate scholarships awards to 14 studentathletes, one from each campus. The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earns high marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. This includes graduating its student-athletes at an 89 percent rate according to the NCAA’s most recent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures, five percentage points higher than the national average. There were 90 A-10 teams with a perfect 1000 GSR score in the NCAA’s 2014 most recent report. The league also had an average Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 985 in 2015, seven points higher than the national average. A record 60 teams were singled out for public recognition for their APR scores by the NCAA this past spring. There were 51 teams with a perfect APR score of 1000 and another 71 teams that scored a 990 in the 2015 report. Success on the playing field has mirrored the A-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earning NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and 11 men’s and women’s basketball bids in 2014-15. Dayton women’s basketball made a run to the Elite Eight, challenging eventual national champion UConn in the process, while VCU baseball advanced to the 2015 NCAA Super Regionals.

THE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an independent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disciplined reasoning, effective communication and a love of learning. From Willings Alley in Old City Philadelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia to its current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’s has continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence, a history of service and an ideal campus location to produce successful students who strive to make a good world even better. Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment comprises approximately 4,670 students. Graduate, evening and executive programs push total enrollment to more than 8,000 students. THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Saint Joseph’s nationally-recognized academic reputation is confirmed by ongoing acknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & World Report and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intellectual inquiry and personal concern manifests itself in small, challenging classes taught by a caring faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, so undergraduates can be sure they are receiving the very best educational experience from trained experts. One-on-one interaction between students and faculty is a reality at Saint Joseph’s. A solid liberal arts curriculum provides across-the-board learning for every student. Supporting that curriculum are comprehensive academic majors and learning facilities. The result is a broad education that prepares students not only for employment and graduate school, but for life itself. In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 million Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center for Food Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium" and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-foot international academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is located near the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.
A HISTORY OF SERVICE The students of Saint Joseph’s University are dedicated to making today’s world even better. A natural spirit of volunteerism has enabled the University’s community service programs to become the most popular extracurricular activities on campus. In addition, a Service Learning program allows students to receive academic credit for their work outside the classroom. SJU offers local, national and international opportunities for student service. From
North Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from New Orleans to the Appalachian Mountains, Saint Joseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission of serving those in need. The Thanksgiving Dinner Dance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annual student-run events that draw thousands of special visitors to campus for fun and friendship.
IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATION SJU’s City Avenue location combines the best of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, residential setting of the elegant Main Line. Saint Joseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing students to literally enjoy the best of both worlds. The city of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth of historical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, is easily accessible, while the safety, serenity and greenery of a suburban campus are right at hand. The friendly atmosphere and close-knit campus ensure that students don’t get lost in either the literal or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s. Expanded library, computer and athletic facilities add a big-time “feel” to this growing university.
SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS Men and women leave Saint Joseph’s prepared. The University boasts an excellent record of placing its graduates in first-time jobs, professional schools and other
advanced degree programs. Part-time work and internships provide real-world experiences, the kind which delight future employers. And with its many diverse student organizations, SJU offers ample opportunities to assume leadership positions. An extensive on-campus recruitment program provides graduates with a head start in their employment search. Regular meetings with faculty advisors, along with advisory programs in the health professions and in pre-law, assist students who wish to further their schooling.
PHILADELPHIA SJU’s Philadelphia location gives students access to two worlds. The campus resembles a park, surrounded by the stately homes of Philadelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet students have access to the cultural, commercial and recreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -– only a short ride away. SJU students take frequent advantage of the artistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers, as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; the Academy of Music, which houses ballet and opera; and the new Kimmel Center, home to the Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, SJU students enjoy rooting for Philadelphia’s teams in the four major professional sports leagues.
