What’s up at St. John’s SOUP SUNDAY // JUNE 2

LEARNERS’ EXCHANGE

This month we have a special treat for Soup Sunday: Joel’s Bread! Joel is a member of St. John’s who has been making a lot of bread this past year, and he is bringing bread to accompany our soup - it’s going to be delicious. Soup Sunday this month will be time to hang out, eat soup, and play games. If you are keen to play a game, bring one along! Soup and bread will be ready downstairs after the Evening Service. We will start winding down around 8:30 pm, but feel free to leave when you’re ready.

Every Sunday in the Café Room at 9:00 am, Learners’ Exchange offers stimulating speakers and engaging discussions.

This is our last Soup Sunday before summer-break. But don’t fret, we’ll resume in September! If you would like to volunteer in the fall on the Soup-Making Team, Set-up Team, or Take-down Team, email Katy at katy@sjvan.org. STEVE JAMES VISIT // JUNE 23 Rev. Steve James and Rachel will be visiting Vancouver in June and July for three weeks. Steve is stepping down from being Rector of Holy Trinity Platt. He will be preaching on Sunday, June 23 at the 10:00 am service. This will be a great opportunity to bring friends who are interested in Christian faith. QUARTERLY PRAYER MEETING

It’s time for the final Quarterly Prayer Meeting before the summer break. Join us as we listen to Scripture, hear a testimony, and spend time praying for our parish and our city. If you have time, please bring a dessert to share! Prayer is an essential component of our life of faith together, and one which we all struggle with. It can be difficult to quiet our hearts. It can be difficult to open up in front of others. It can be difficult to believe in the power of prayer. We know we ought to do it, but what exactly are we doing when we pray? Learning to pray is learning to submit to the will of the Father, and everything which that entails. Jesus perfectly models this when he prays “not my will but yours be done” in the garden of Gethsemane. In Romans, Paul reminds us “that we do not know what to pray for,” yet God in his infinite mercy sends his Spirit who prays for us “with groanings too deep for words” (Rom 8:26). And not only that. Having just celebrated Ascension Day, we also know that the resurrected Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father and intercedes for us, allowing us to draw near to him (Heb 7:25). We pray, because as we do, we are being drawn into the life of God. Because of this great reality “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith!” joyfully, purposefully, and regularly, so that we might truly “pray without ceasing.”
