Welcome
Dear guest Over the years the famous light that characterises Skagen has attracted and provided great inspiration to numerous artists – ranging from the famous Skagen painters to the many artists that still feel the lure of Skagen today. There’s something wonderful about being at a location where the surroundings have been such an inspiration to the artists. It adds a particular dash of authenticity to an experience which also appears to inspire many contemporary artists in Skagen. We wish to give you an insight into the vast range of cultural attractions available in Skagen. In this catalogue we look forward to presenting a broad cross section of the many galleries, museums, glass artists, painters and sculptors that have settled at the northernmost tip of Denmark. Be inspired to experience and enjoy the wide diversity of art forms found in Skagen and our beautiful region.

The story of the Skagen painters Who were they and where did they live?
Anna Ancher
Michael Ancher
Marie Krøyer
P.S. Krøyer
Lured by the wish to paint in the great outdoors, fascinated by the rugged scenery and the difficult conditions under which the local fishermen lived, the so-called Skagen painters settled in Skagen at the end of the 19th century. The arrival of the artists marked the beginnings of a growing artists’ colony which helped put Skagen on the map. They made their mark on the town, on art, on development and even on the Skagen that exists today.
ANNA ANCHER (1859-1935)
Anna Ancher was born in Skagen on 18 August 1859, daughter of innkeeper and merchant Erik Brøndum. Anna is the only one of the well-known artists that was born and bred in Skagen. She grew up at Brøndum’s inn and merchant’s house – which is now Brøndum’s Hotel – where she became acquainted with the now famous Skagen painters. In 1874 she met Michael, whom she married some 6 years later. Their only child, daughter Helga, was born in 1883. From 1875-1878 Anna was a student at Wilhelm Kyhn’s drawing school in Copenhagen. She drew inspiration for her paintings from her visual experi-

ences, from the local population of fishermen and from Skagen’s scenery. Anna Ancher died in Skagen on 15 April 1935. MICHAEL ANCHER (1849-1927)
Michael Ancher was born on 9 June 1849 on the island of Bornholm. In 1870 he moved to Copenhagen, where he attended art school and later the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 18711875. Michael Ancher set foot in Skagen for the first time in 1874 and stayed in the town on several occasions until he married Anna Brøndum in 1880, after which he took up permanent residence in Skagen. was the Garden House, part of Brøndum’s inn and merchant estate, now located in the gardens of Skagens Museum. In 1883 they moved to their residence on Markvej. Michael Ancher was a skilled figure painter who devoted a great deal of energy to large, ambitious compositions of figures. He’s particularly well known for his pictures of Skagen’s fishing population and the tough conditions that they faced. As he became more familiar with Skagen’s environment, the nature of his paintings changed and took on a more realistic slant. Inspired by the fate of rescuer Lars Kruse, in 1879 he painted “Will He Round the Point?”, which marked his artistic breakthrough. Michael died in Skagen on 19 September 1927. MARIE KRØYER (1867-1940)
Marie Martha Matilde Triepke was born on 11 June 1867 in Frederiksberg. Marie began her artistic training at the end of the 1880’s and was taught at private schools both in Denmark and in Paris. She visited
Skagen for the first time in 1887, but did not move to the town until after her marriage to Krøyer in 1891. Following her arrival in Skagen, she painted less frequently, but turned her attention to interior decoration and design. She lived with Krøyer until their separation in 1905, after which she moved to Copenhagen and later to Sweden, where she married Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén in 1912. Marie Krøyer died on 25 May 1940 in Stockholm. P.S. KRØYER (1851-1909)
Peder Severin Krøyer – known to his friends as Søren – was born on 23 July 1851 in Norway, but grew up in Copenhagen. Krøyer was enrolled at the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen at the age of just 14 and later attended a private art school in Paris. He was to become one of the period’s most sought-after portrait painters. Krøyer came to Skagen for the first time in 1882, where he was impressed

by Skagen’s rugged scenery and hardy fishermen. The social intercourse with the other artists – where he soon became a focal point – meant that he returned to Skagen summer after summer. In 1889 he married the young painter Marie and they moved to Skagen together in 1891. Initially they were tenants in Madam Bendsen’s House, which later became Tuxen’s Villa, and in 1894 they rented accommodation in the former residence of the town’s bailiff, now better known as Krøyer’s House. Marie and P.S. Krøyer were divorced in 1906. Krøyer is best known for his pictures from Skagen. Figure paintings, pictures of the artists’ carefree life in good company, such as “Hip, Hip Hooray”, and walks on the beach, such as “Summer Evening on Sønderstrand”. His speciality was “the blue hour”, which he depicted in several images painted during Skagen’s light summer evenings. Krøyer died on 21 November 1909, having suffered from poor health for several years.

HOLGER DRACHMANN (1846-1908)
Holger Drachmann, maritime painter and poet, was born on 9 October 1846 in Copenhagen. In 1866 he began studying at the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and although he is generally acclaimed as a poet, he completed his education as a maritime painter. Drachmann visited Skagen for the first time in 1871 – incidentally as the first of what was later to become the “Skagen painters” – and it was here in particular that he demonstrated his artistic skills. He returned to Skagen at various intervals until finally taking up permanent residence at Villa Pax - Drachmann’s House - with the last of his three wives, Soffi. Drachmann had a great interest in poetry, and as he began to set his sights on making a living from poetry at the beginning of 1872, his painting took a back seat. Drachmann’s writings were wide-ranging, covering poems, stories, journalistic articles and his work as an art critic. Drachmann was one of the artists in Skagen who got closest to the town’s inhabitants, and with his genuine interest in their way of life

LAURITS TUXEN (1853-1927) visited Skagen for the first time in 1870, but did not settle permanently until 1901, following his marriage to his second wife Frederikke. They bought Madam Bendsen’s House, now better known as Tuxen’s Villa.
Art is designed to be displayed, which indeed it was in 1908 when enterprising individuals led by chemist Klæbel established Skagens Museum in Brøndum’s dining hall. During the summers of 1907-1909 various works of art were exhibited at the technical college and in 1911 Krøyer’s House was opened as a museum. When the museum building was finished in 1928, the most important works were transferred from Krøyer’s House to the museum, and from 1928-1940 the house acted as a section of Skagens Museum. At the outbreak of the Second World War Krøyer’s House was closed as a museum.
OSCAR BJÖRCK (1860-1929) was a Swedish painter who visited Skagen for the first time in 1882. Along with Norwegian painter CHRISTIAN KROHG (1852-1925), who initially visited Skagen in 1879, and 2 other Scandinavian artists, he rented accommoThe aforementioned painters were the dation at Jomfru Mehlsen’s House, which most notable of the town’s artists, but the was later to become Michael and Anna Anfollowing artists from the inner circle of cher’s permanent residence. the artists’ colony also deserve a mention:
CARL LOCHER (1851-1915) was born in Flensburg and visited the town for the first time in 1872. He took up permanent residence in the town in 1910 when he built a house with a studio at the edge of the beach on what is Østre Strandvej today. VIGGO JOHANSEN (1851-1935) initially came to the town in 1875. Following his marriage to Anna Ancher’s cousin Martha in 1880,

No print or lines from projected motifs... it must stand alone with clear signals, Rock and Roll.... quick, decisive brushstrokes or applications of the palette knife ..., and no corrections should be made to the initial image. That’s it... no pampering or fiddling. Straight from the shoulder, you owe it to the user, to provide energy, dynamism and positive waves such that you can face the challenges of the day ahead...”

During the winter from 1936 to 1937 Karen Blixen lived in Skagen. The mission was to get some peace and quiet, so she could finish the novel “Out of Africa” about her years in Kenya. Initially Karen Blixen stayed at Brøndums Hotel, but when a cat was shot after her own complaint, Karen Blixen instantly moved to the less fashionable Skagens Hotel. However she later reconsidered and moved back to Brøndums Hotel and today you can still stay in the room, where Karen Blixen worked on one of her most famous novels. Just ask for the Karen Blixen room.

SKAGEN - A MECCA FOR ARTISTS - BOTH PAST AND PRESENT The light, the landscape and the atmosphere that characterise Skagen have attracted not only painters, but also a wide range of composers, poets and authors. One of them was KAREN BLIXEN, one of the world’s most famous female authors.
