Birlinn’s Limited Editions imprint was launched in 2006 to make available high quality facsimiles of Scottishrelated works of outstanding historical and aesthetic interest. The first two volumes, The Blaeu Atlas of Scotland (first published in Amsterdam in 1654) and Daniell’s Scotland (the Scottish part of William Daniell’s A Voyage Round Great Britain, first published between 1815 and 1822), were published in December 2006. These individually numbered editions, which include authoritative notes and introductions by acknowledged experts, are all lavishly illustrated and clothbound in individual slipcases.

The first atlas of Scotland to be published by county, Thomson’s Atlas of 1832 creates an invaluable picture of Scotland prior to the Clearances and is a highly significant milestone in the history of mapping.

This very large format facsimile includes two specially commissioned essays by Professor Charles W.J. Withers of the University of Edinburgh, and Christopher Fleet and Paula Williams of the National Library of Scotland.

Compiled between 1845 and 1852, this magnificent collection of 240 engravings with accompanying commentaries records the most significant medieval buildings in Scotland. One of the most spectacular books on Scottish architecture ever published, this facsimile edition is introduced by Ian Gow, Chief Curator of the National Trust for Scotland.

The fifth volume of Joan Blaeu’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus, was the first atlas of Scotland and provides an unrivalled view of the country 350 years ago. This 21st-century edition reproduces all the 49 hand-coloured maps in the original. It also features the complete texts translated into English, and an introduction by Professor Charles W.J. Withers.

A Voyage Round Great Britain is one of the finest of the illustrated topographical and travel books which enjoyed enormous popularity in early 19th-century Britain. This is the first modern edition of Daniell’s Voyage to feature facsimile colour reproductions – 157 in total – of the places he visited in Scotland, and includes introductory essays by Elizabeth Bray and Iain Gordon Brown.

William Roy’s Military Survey of Scotland 1747–55 is an immensely detailed and ground-breaking map of mainland Scotland made after the Jacobite rising of 1745, and was a formative influence on the Ordnance Survey. This fully-indexed edition reproduces all the maps and includes three essays by Yolande Hudson, Charles W.J. Withers and Chris Tabraham.

This limited edition celebrates the unique talent of John Kay, the miniaturist who created an unforgettable record of Edinburgh society during the Enlightenment. Originally published in Edinburgh in 1837–38, these volumes contain 356 etchings of representatives from all walks of life, including many of the leading figures of the time. This edition includes an introductory essay by Alan Bell, formerly Librarian of the London Library.

Alexander Goudie’s Tam o’ Shanter

Alexander Goudie (1933–2004) described Tam o’ Shanter as ‘a gothic tale, strewn with vivid and awesome images’.

Over several years he transcribed his imaginings onto canvas, creating a series of narrative paintings which ‘deserves to be ranked among the best illustrative cycles in Scottish Art’ (Sir Timothy Clifford). This book brings together his definitive vision of Burns’ great poem.

Two specially commissioned essays by Professor Edward J. Cowan and Professor Alan Riach of Glasgow University provide the literary, historical and folklore background to the work and its relations to Alexander Goudie’s paintings, and the author’s son, Lachlan Goudie, provides a biographical essay which sets the Tam o’ Shanter paintings within the context of his father’s career. format:
