ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT NEWS & VIEWS Natasha Purich and Raymond Schultz, Figure Skating Named 2011 Junior Team of the Year After only a short period of time as partners, Natasha Purich and Raymond Schultz showed the poise of long time pairs skaters. After pairing up in the summer of 2010, and competing in two international events later that same year, Natasha and Raymond kicked off 2011 winning a National Championship, becoming only the second pairing from Alberta to win the junior title. The team then represented Canada at the World Junior Championships, earning a fifth place finish while skating a personal best in their short program. The pair improved on their personal best at a Skate Canada event in October, and skated to an eighth place finish at a Grand Prix event in November. Natasha has been skating since 2002, and prior to joining forces with Raymond was a Pre Novice Ladies National Champion and a Novice Ladies National silver medalist. Natasha also competed in the 2011 Junior Nationals as a singles skater, finishing fourth and missing a medal by less than one tenth of a point. As a participant in the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation’s Pathway to Excellence program, Natasha attended the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, experiencing the Games as a spectator. Raymond has been skating since 1994, and won a bronze medal in pairs at the 2009 National Championship. Natasha and Raymond were coached by Ravi Walia and David Pelletier and skated out of the Ice Palace Figure Skating Club in Edmonton.

2012 SPRING DEVELOPMENT CAMP

The 2012 Spring Development Camp was held April 28-29, 2012 at the Leduc Recreation Center and the Royal Glenora Club. The camp was attended by 90 skaters, consisting of 40 Junior Development Team members, 28 Select Team members, and 22 additional skaters invited by the Athlete Development Committee. The Spring Development Camp had the pleasure of welcoming David Pelletier an Olympic Gold medalist, Cynthia Ullmark an NCCP Level 4 coach who has worked with Susan Humphreys and Michelle Curry, Kelly Johnson a Canadian Silver medalist and choreographer who has worked with Olympians Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay, and Lisa Kinding, a NCCP Level 3 coach. These individuals delivered amazing on-ice sessions for the skaters in attendance. During the on-ice sessions, skaters were taught new skills and provided feedback to refine current skills, culminating for some in the landing of jumps for the first time. Kelly Johnson delivered a dynamite dance session for the dance couples attending. Kelly provided a great performance and also assisted singles and pair skaters with their edges. Outside the arena, athletes took part in off-ice training and activities including skipping and power yoga. Denise GariÊpy, Section Executive Director, introduced skipping as both a warm-up and fitness activity. Athletes were rosy-cheeked and enthusiastic about the activity. Monica Boucher, Section Level Singles Technical Specialist and former Senior Women’s competitor at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, led the athletes in power yoga and stretch sessions. Monica provided the skaters with new movements that can be incorporated in their daily training and routines. This year offered a unique Development camp to athletes, including world class technical experts. Thank you to David Pelletier, Cynthia Ullmark, Kelly Johnson and Lisa Kinding for their work with the athletes, to the Leduc Recreation Centre and the Royal Glenora Club for their assistance in effectively running and accommodating the Spring Development Camp, and to the parents who offered their help and support throughout this busy weekend. Many thanks to the Section sponsors that help make dreams a reality! In particular, thank you to Triple Flip for sponsoring the teamwear for the Junior Development Team and Challenge Team athletes, and the Alberta Figure Skating Foundation for their continued financial support of the Junior Development Team.

2012 SPRING DEVELOPMENT CAMP “The second she (Kelly Johnson) stepped on the ice, she made it feel like it was a performance. Even though my edges and turns weren’t as good as the other kids, she looked for things that were good in all of us. It made me feel like working hard.”

“What I like about the on-ice sessions with David Pelletier is that he is extremely straight forward in how he coaches. He coaches from experience, which gives us insight on the skills that he is teaching.”

43rd Annual General Meeting, Convention & Awards Banquet

19

2012 SECTION ACGM Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut held its 2012 Annual Conference, General Meeting and Awards Banquet on May 5, 2012 at the Edmonton Marriott at River Cree Resort. This annual event was successful and provided Section members with the opportunity to gather for a day of learning opportunities, a chance to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and to look forward to the upcoming season. The day began with delegates participating in their choice of two workshops. “They Shoot! They Score!” Running a CanPowerSkate Program at Your Club presented by Gay Dubeau and “Exploring Board/Coach Relationships” presented by Donna Moses, Tammi Chudak, Allyson Wright and Kelly Havixbeck, were both favourably received by the delegates. The workshops were highlighted by a keynote presentation lead by Dr. Stephen Norris, a member of the Canadian Sport for Life Expert Working Group. Dr. Norris’ presentation, “Exploring LTAD: LTAD Integration at the Club Level”, discussed the background behind the Long Term Athlete Development model and applied it specifically to figure skating. Thank you to Duso’s for providing support for this keynote presentation, and to Dr. Norris for his dynamic presentation. Lastly, congratulations to Roxanne Doerksen who was ecstatic to win the iPod Shuffle generously donated and drawn by Duso’s! Thank you to all those who attended, as well as to Dr. Norris, Gay, Donna, Tammi, Allyson, and Kelly for their time and effort in making these presentations and workshops a success. The Annual General Meeting reviewed the activities of the Section from 2011-2012. For more information, click to see the Annual Report. The Awards Banquet kicked off with the Triple Flip Fashion Show, where Triple Flip fashions were modeled by Section skaters. Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay, 2010 Canadian Olympic Team members, did an outstanding job as the Masters of Ceremonies for the evening. The evening celebrated the accomplishments of Section athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers. The Alberta Figure Skating Foundation presented their annual awards and recognized the contributions of their volunteers and the success of their member skaters. The financial contribution of the Alberta Figure Skating Federation towards the purchase of live streaming equipment was also announced, and much celebrated by those in attendance! During the Awards Banquet, two new Section sponsors were announced. The Section welcomed Professional Skate Service Calgary and Artègo Canada as Gold Sponsors, and announced that Professional Skate Service Calgary will be the Presenting Partner for the Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Sectional Championships. The first Duso’s Helping Hand of the Month award was announced, and the Section was pleased to acknowledge the contributions of Mary Cherniawski, who was named as the first recipient. Now that the Section’s 2012 ACGM is over, it is time to start thinking about next year’s event. The 2013 Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut ACGM and Awards Banquet will be held in Red Deer, Alberta. We hope to see you next year! Thank you to all those who helped make the Section’s 2012 ACGM a success!
