Program review Program highlights 2014 marked the fourth year of Summer at the Skatepark in Castlegar, BC. Kooteny Family Places free drop in skateboard coaching program, during July and August, continues to offer a high quality and accessible skateboarding experience to children, youth and families visiting the skatepark. With 315 signed up participants and over 700 visits in just 39 days of operation it is evident the opportunity to skateboard with accredited coaches at Castlegar Rotary Skatepark is well supported.
Accredited Coaches
Riston coaching the fundamental skateboarding skill, the ollie.
Ty coaching how to ride transition
Riston Turner & Ty Smith, both school teachers, utilized the Drop In to skateboarding curriculum where skaters were guided through board skills developmentally. As the skaters confidence increased, the coaches nurtured participants awareness of how to ride steeper banks, transitions and the skate bowl. With over 800 participants since 2011 the program has not reported any major injuries (broken bones). Having safety equipment available and reinforcing skatepark etiquette has shown conclusively that with instruction skateboarding is a very safe and fun activity for all ages.
Youth Coaches Levi Peirson, an advanced skateboarder from Nelson, completed his second summer mentoring all ages in skateboarding skills from novice to advanced.
Youth coaches Accredited skateboard coach Stephanie Scott, of Trail BC, showed amazing patience and enthusiasm for coaching. As a female skater the girls particularly were thrilled to roll with her daily.

“I love the Free drop in skateboarding program! So does my daughter Laura. The only reason we tried out this program was that it was free. We discovered Laura has the strength and the love for skateboarding. It is the one program she looks forward to every summer. She would skate until she dropped. I think it helps with her gymnastics in the rest of the year!”

Very grateful, Barb Mackay” “It is a great program for my 8 and 9 year old boys. We were able to spend a long summer holiday with this excellent knowledgeable. Also they know how to teach different ages of children. My boys learnt not just how to skate but respect other people at the park and the skatepark”
Volunteers Local youth were excited to see the program at the skatepark. Often they were there early to help set up and in the afternoon for pack up. In 2015 we are entertaining the idea of beginning a work experience roster.
