MANTIS is an elegantly simplified variant of the iconic desk lamp, made of lightly stained solid maple. The lamp uses energy-saving LEDs placed with precision to provide a natural like warm white light emanating from a hollowed out wooden fixture. The simplified usability comes through in the mechanical principle which relies on gravity to fix an aluminum tube that has been inserted through a wooden stem attached to its base. With this minimalist principle in mind one can effortlessly swing and adjust the height displaying the intended delicate balance, lightness and playfulness of the design. In its symbiosis of clear lines, the natural character of the wood, the colourful accent of the textile cable and coated aluminum tube, MANTIS is a timeless piece to compliment any modern home and office interior. Antenna is a delicate statement - a fragile and minimalist expression of the desk lamp, a poetic simplification of task lighting. The surprise is in the way that Antenna telescopes apart, pulling up to light the table, pushing down to highlight the keyboard or page, rotating and turning to accent a picture on the wall. Some would argue that the once ubiquitous telescopic aerial is an endangered species, an instrument made obsolete by technological progress, but Antenna’s knowing reference to an analogue heritage of pre-digital cars, FM radios and portable TVs is married to silent-butler state-ofthe-art technology to make a truly fresh and modern statement. Jinn is a floor and table lamp, based on the idea to create a reinterpretation of a classic decorative lamp comprising a base and lamp shade. In opposition to the traditional build of a central structure holding the shade and light source in place, Jinn is deconstructing this typology by removing the stem. The metal shade is supported by a glass piece that is mounted on top of the base. The light source itself is located in the base so that the light is reflected from the lamp shade and emits through the glass. Being reminiscent of oil or gas lamps the control for dimming and switching is positioned on the base of the lamp. Using the wheel on the side, the intensity of light can be adjusted in a very intuitive manner. Balloon owes elements of its form to the typical antique oil lamps and candle holders with a reflector placed behind the flame to reflect and direct the light. Besides, the natural occurrence of what we often consider the moon to be a light source (next to e.g. fire and the sun) although it is just a reflected light from the sun, gave further stimulus to work with idea of the indirect light. CFL reflector is situated inside lamp´s cylindrical base. Light shines upwards and enlightens the reflector, which tilts forwards, re-directing and reflecting a diffused glimmer of light. Through its simplicity and figurative character, the lamp leaves room for associations and fantasy – is it a balloon soaring into the air, a small glowing sun or an oversized light bulb? A small, light lamp with a distinct character. The handles used for carrying it around describe the form of the everyday lamps of our time – the familiar triangular and the square. A contour that reminds us of standard, anticipated shapes, shapes we all know and recognize – turned into a functional handle and simultaneously into an ornamental element as well, giving the lamp its strong presence. The Smoke collection is a series of floor lamps based on scaled-down prototypical elements of suburbia – the factory, the house – isolated from their natural context and transformed into iconic additions for the home or office, belching “smoke”, illuminating spaces and more. Floor lamps meant to light up living and working environments – to be useful and critical simultaneously – comment on our everyday lives, surrounded by pollution and consumption. Smoke lamps are a picture of our world transformed into a source of light, but they’re also a source of happiness and joy, around which the rituals of life can take place. The lamp’s design owes its form to the funnel, a highly typical household object, something all our grandmothers used in their kitchens, bottling and decanting wine, olive oil and similar throughout their lifetimes. While a familiar object it’s also been transformed into a new one, hanging above the kitchen or dining table as a recognizable, iconic light source – a small funell that serves as a ceiling rosette, a large one casting light onto the horizontal surface below. The same elements are further transformed into table and floor lamps, with a large pivoting funnel shade that allows for specific directing of the light. A tube-like ray of light projects up and out of the top of the shade, creating a playful dot on the ceiling or neighbouring walls. This lamp was not crafted to impress, but to conquer. It gives you a reason to stop. It gives you an excuse to escape. It gently pushes you to surrender. Two shells are joined to form a borderline between dark and light, shade and diffusor. They’re bound by three velcro bands, leaving the shell edges free of metallic joints. When the lamp is on, the inner white shell diffuses a soft, comfortable light, while the indirect light emitted from the top gives the impression that the lamp is floating below the ceiling. The contrast of black ABS outside and opal white acrylic inside is striking even when the light is off. The three elements – shade, diffusor and velcro tie bands – are clear and visible features in the design and make the lamp easy to maintain. No manual is needed to change the bulb. Two standard versions of 616 exist: one for use with 60W fluorescent lamp and the other for use with dual 60 W and 55W fluorescent lamps for extra illumination, enabling the use of Borderline in different spaces. The magic of these arresting, elegant lamps is simplicity. The lamp forms a minimalist narrow beam of light and two graphic lines: one rigid, one curved. The design goal for the Slim lamp was to merge a standard fluorescent tube with the ballast module into a single object. The ballast module is housed in a bottle-like extension of a metal pipe, which is laser-cut for optimal light emission. The result is a lamp with a monolithic and dignified appearance with an unusually slim body. Slim can be used as a vertical-suspension lamp, floor lamp, or standard horizontal office lamp. The direction of the light beam can be regulated by hand. The lamp shade can be adjusted by 20 degrees. The vertical pendant lamp doesn’t require any electrical connection on the ceiling because it feeds from a wall socket. Slim can be used at home, in the office, or in public spaces. Puffball is wall- or ceiling- fixed spotlight generating diffused and broad accentuated lighting. The two centres of rotation enable a stepless directing of the light in all directions. The result is a light which is extremly flexible in use without having a technical characteristic. It had to be a character, but whithout being figurative. All the versions of the Naked collection revolve around the idea of a light source, covered with the simplest and most obvious monochromatic ‘body’, serving as a shade. Bubble
BUBBLE Design: Smoke Detektors
The lamp is reminiscent of a lively, bubbling source of spring water, lava or therapeutic mud. It represents the inner force of the earth that bubbles with energy. The form suggests movement, changes and the instability of natural phenomena, even though the light is constant and uniform. Without a metal frame Bubble expresses its form pure and is practically invisible. Its amorphous form enables use of the electronic pre-switch device and the battery module. The modularity of the three sizes allows us to follow the architecture. The light is deflected in all directions and spreads pleasantly across the space. Year of design: 2008 -
