Indoor Parks Council run
Let’s face it here in the UK it rains a lot! Which for us dry concrete and tarmac worshipping types, isn’t that great. So people come up with the idea let’s go somewhere where it’s dry.
Getting There Take the A47 from Norwich or Peterborough to King’s Lynn. Then the A149 North, turning left into Gayton Road from here follow brown signs for Lynnsport. Or ask locals for directions to Lynnsport if you loose the signs which is easy to do!
But the only problem with most of these are that in those good four to five months of rain and cold, they will only get skated at most a few days a week.
So why hadn’t Councils provided indoor skateparks up until now, I However council’s have only just mean there have been privately realised this, probably after run indoor skateparks in the UK kicking kids off Council property for decades. dry spots across the nation. The likely answer is the same King’s Lynn Council is the first problem that private skateparks local authority to recognise face, insurance and funding. skatboarding as a sport which for the most part is conducted Well even so, here is the first somewhere dry, and finally built indoor skatepark run by a Council, at the LynnSport an indoor skatepark. complex in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. In the sudden boom period for skateparks across the UK However you can tell that this is Council’s have opted for outdoor a Council who have not listened parks, whether it be Plazas, to the people they ask advice Tin-Toy parks, or concrete bowls. from! As the floor is not concrete, but tarmac very similar to a tennis court, I am told this will hopefully change. The ramps and postioning are very much experimental and work in progress, a Vert is due to be installed soon, something the UK needs desperately! Give it a visit soon but you need to wear helmets. Featured skater owned shop...
Smash Skates, Beccles, Suffolk
Who are you, where’s your shop and what’s it called? Ash Lever: I’m Ash Lever and I own Smash Skates in Beccles, Suffolk - basically a small market town on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Cloe Merrells: Hey I’m Merrells and wanna be in this too ya know!! LETS NOT FORGET WHO HELPED THE MOSTEST. Why Smash Skates? Is it to do with the film Thrashin? AL: Yeh Sam Flood and all that if you haven’t seen this film then watch it right now. DAGGERS RULE! CM: Anyone seen velvet, that’s me, honest.
14
How long have you been running Smash? AL: Since the end of May last year, so about 8 months CM: And can I add we worked our butts off for months before hand Why open a shop in such a small town in Suffolk? AL: Good point - ask Cloe! Nah, only joking. There’s nowhere for anyone to go round here for decent skate stuff unless they go to Norwich or Ipswich, which for some people is at least an hour bus journey and a good chunk of cash wasted on bus/train fare. There’s a great scene round here - everyone knows each other and skates with each other and I really wanted to give something back now I’ve got the chance financially to do so. Beccles is kinda central to the area I’m trying to cover and easy to get to from Halesworth, Lowestoft, Leiston etc and I live round the corner so that’s the reason why I’m here CM: And we get to bum around together all day every day, what could be better?!

Smash Skates Smash Ska Smash Skates Lets have a quick talk about the team then? AL: Well, you got, Me, Ben Bucklee from Yarmouth, Tommy May from Beccles (well Toft Monks - arse-end of nowhere actually!) and Cloe (she don’t skate much but she’s proper hot and works harder on this place than I do!) CM: Yeh you got that right Start with you, how long you been skating and what got you into it? AL: Started about 10 years ago. My mates started getting boards for something to do and at first I didn’t really get it. Then Paul sorted me out with his old setup and that was it basically - started off just bombing this hill and skating the village green and then we all got into the Lowestoft scene and have been a good part of it ever since! CM: Yeh I’m JUST a skater dater really, bit sad I know. Maybe it’s just sweaty men that does it, who knows. What caused you to start sponsoring Tommy then? AL: He’s just really good! He’s just constantly up for skating. He’s still perfecting his style and that but he can skate practically anything and learns tricks at a stupid speed. Everyone’s started calling him trick-a-day Tommy!! CM: Hey and we always liked him because he’s mad, always wants to skate and proper rages out if he can’t!!
What do you think of Ben getting on Eothen? AL: Great news - I don’t have to give him decks! No it’s really good - he deserves this kind of break and he’s the sort of person that will work hard for his sponsor rather than just sponge off them. Craig has got the right idea with Eothen - its all about the skating and quality of goods/design rather than bucketloads of cash and that’s the way it should be in my opinion. Think Ben will fit in nicely. CM: Go Ben wooooo, get those trackie bott steez out there!! Who on the team would win in a game of skate? AL: Probably Ben but if I pulled the nollie casper flip early enough it might be a different story! Oh yeah, and would like to let Mark Baines know that I would be well up for joining his SOS game of skate

“let’s not give Ash any credit for the designs, there’s a sexy Rasta out there...“
Are you going to be doing lots of clothing soon now you got the heat press and stuff? AL: Well that’s Cloe’s field really - it’s her project and doing shop clothing will hopefully help us both out. I’m gonna pump out as many designs as I can afford to do and the cool thing about having the press etc ourselves is we can do one-offs and not get stung with loads of stock of a design everyone else thinks is shit. CM: ...and let’s not give Ash any credit for the designs, there’s a sexy Rasta out there who has helped us with that, and lets face it, as soon as I’m in on the designs for the ladies, people are gonna go wild on those Smash Skates shirts, they love it.

Video wise what’s coming now that Final Cut Yo’s out there? AL: Well first of all thanks to everyone involved in Final Cut - it took a while but we got there! Thanks to everyone who’s snapped up a copy and if you haven’t then get in here and buy it! Next video project will hopefully be out in late Spring/early Summer. Its gonna be called ‘You Wish’ and will focus more on all the new skaters coming into the scene as well as full parts from all Smash riders. ‘Final Cut’ featured all us lot who have been skating together in/around Low and Norwich for the last decade, so ‘You Wish’ will be one for the future generation! Its gonna be mainly filmed by Lewis Sharman (Sharman-Cam) - he’s only 15 so its a proper ‘one for the kids’ CM: Hey I thought I was getting a section on that? “One for the kids” what you trying to say? What for the future after that? AL: Dunno really - just try and keep this going no matter what. Gonna keep skating and supporting everyone around here and nationwide where I can. Maybe distribution at some point - there’s some quality Brit/Euro brands out there who need support (Aeon Footwear anyone??).
The usual thanks: AL: Cloe for kicking my arse into gear and making this happen I LOVE YOU! And to my Mum, Dad, Bro; the whole Merrells family; anyone else who’s helped me out in any way; skaters in East Anglia; becclesskate.co.uk; Tommy and Ben for helping to put the word out; and special thanks to Ad Kolakovic for being a 6ft Rasta and doing all the clothing/sticker graphics. ROLL OR GO HOME!!!

Photoshop Quick Tips Photoshop has been around for years now and has become the leading product for image manipulation due to its incredible array of features available to the user.
Nearly the entire Graphic Design industry is based around this product with it being used day in, day out to colour correct photos, create amazing type effects, restore old image to a new glory and It is now up to it’s 9th version many many more uses. with CS2 which stands for Creative Suite as it comes as Photoshop is a very a part of Adobe’s suite of expensive product to buy at applications or separately. around £700 for Photoshop on its own or £1000 for the entire Adobe Creative Suite, as a result many people have got illegal copies of the program and it is estimated that there are more illegal copies in the world than genuine copies. However you get hold of your copy, we are going to show you how to do a few things over the next couple of issues, starting with Adjusting Colour.

Photoshop Quick Tip #1:-
Adjusting Colour
Firstly you’ll want to have opened the image you want to adjust in Photoshop. Now for adjusting colours and make images lighter or darker you want to use the Levels tool shown above. Some people use the Brightness/Contrast feature to try and lighten images, however this often results in images that are very gray and bland colours.
There are slider below the histogram which are used to adjust the Dark, Mid and Light Tones of the image. Pulling the sliders to the right will lighten an image and pulling the sliders to the left will dark an image.
You have to be careful when adjusting these sliders as if you pull them too tight together it will make the image look really contrasting. Unless you want Once you select Levels from the that effect of course. menu you will get a box like the The best way to learn how to use ones to the left. the Levels feature is to open an The box shows a histogram of image and simply play with the the colours in the image. Good levels until the image looks how images will have a fairly you want it to look. balanced graph which peaks in the middle. Images that are very dark will peak to the left and too light images peak to the right.
This image is a very dark image where the flash did not reach the entire subject. The histogram is heavily weighted to the left.
Pulling the Dark slider in a little bit preserves the black of the sky, while pulling the other sliders in to the middle more lightens the subject.
The sliders have been pulled together far too tightly giving a contrasting look to the colour of the image.

What do you expect to be doing later on in life after skating, do you have plans for a company perhaps? Retire to the country and build a mini-ramp in a barn, then sell local artwork to tourists. Do you work entirely digitally with your artwork or do you hand draw and convert it to digital? I sketch stuff out, maybe ink it too then, scan it in and play about with it in Photoshop, Illustrator or Flash. Any projects lined-up like shows, or doing some artwork for any skate brands? I've got a new t-shirt design for Story Skate Store, look out for that. And the traditional thanks to people?
